Clement M. Soldenski
EAST LAKE, MI - Clement M. Soldenski, age 85, of East Lake, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at Tendercare of Manistee.
Clement was born June 8, 1916 in Grand Marais to Valentine and Maryann (Reisner) Soldenski. He married Myrtle Gascoigne on November 5, 1938 in Detroit. He and Myrtle lived in Skandia for thirty years before recently moving to East Lake. He was a member of Carpenters Local 1510 for 50 years, working on a number of major construction projects in the Upper Peninsula, including the Mackinac Bridge, before retiring in 1974.
He is survived by: his wife, Myrtle Soldenski and one daughter, Sharon Bence, both of East Lake; one son, Robert (Brenda) Soldenski of Rudyard; two brothers, Edmund Soldenski of Detroit and Ted (Marge) Soldenski of Grand Marais; two sisters, Rosie Vandrieul of Munising and Clara Clecura of Detroit; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Steven, John, Edward, Felix, Andrew, Flavian, and Walter; and four sisters, Bertha, Esther, Anna, and Martha.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
Oak Grove Cremation Center of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Deloris C. Wilson
SALINE, MICHIGAN -- Deloris C. Wilson, 82, formerly of Beaver Grove, died Monday, July 30, 2001 at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor after a long illness complicated by a recently broken hip.
She was born December 28, 1918 in Unionville, MI to Harry and Goldie (Hatfield) Barrett and grew up in the Lansing area, graduating from Lansing Central High School. She moved to this area in 1942 and had lived in Beaver Grove for 54 years before moving to Saline in 1998 to live with her daughter Linda. She belonged to Messiah Lutheran Church for many years and in later years the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Over the years, she attended Fortune Lake Bible Camp and Camp Shaw often. Deloris was active in various organizations, including the Girl Scouts, 4-H, Home Extension, Civil Air Patrol and Cub Scouts and enjoyed bowling and bingo.
Survivors include a son Rex W. Wilson (Kathy) of Pittsburg, PA, two daughters; Deloris J. Beaudry (Edward) of Marshfield, WI and Linda J. Emard (Ron) of Saline, MI, a sister Eathel Bondy of Lake Shasta, CA, ten grandchildren: Steve Beaudry (Tammy), Glen Beaudry, Dan Beaudry (Christine), Ben Beaudry (Linda), Sheri Wilson Richards (Kurt), Brad Wilson (Lisa), Jennifer Emard Hutchinson (Paul), Aime Emard Hustad (Todd), Bethany Wilson Buckner (John), and Kim Wilson, and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband John W. Wilson, her son John Alden, her grandson John Eric, her parents, seven brothers and two sisters. She was a grand lady and will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, August 3, 2001 in the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Chrys Levesque officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens. Visitation will begin at the church at 10:00 AM on Friday. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials can be made to the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
Elmer K. Carlson
MARQUETTE -- Elmer K. Carlson, 94, of 642 W. Magnetic St., died Monday, July 30, 2001 at his home.
He was born January 27, 1907 in Negaunee, MI, the sixth of seven children born to Swedish immigrant parents Andrew and Anna (Ericksson) Carlson. He was a 1925 graduate of Negaunee High School where he played both football and basketball, served as a class officer and was on the forensics team. He was a 1931 graduate of Beloit College in Beloit, WI, where he played varsity basketball and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. After college graduation, he worked for several years as an auditor for Metropolitan Life Insurance, working out of Detroit and Cleveland. Following his marriage to Anna Choquette in 1938, he worked for the Internal Revenue Service, the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., and a public accounting firm in Cleveland, Ohio and Andrew Carlson of Marquette; grandchildren Douglas (Carolyn) Carlson and Christina Carlson and great grandchildren Lindsay and Kyle Carlson. He was preceded in death by a daughter Christina Thomas in 1968 and his wife Anna in 1993.
Visitation will be at the Swanson- Lundquist Funeral Home from 12:00 PM -2:00 PM on Friday, August 3, 2001. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 PM in Park Cemetery with Rev. Mark Engle of St. Paul's Episcopal Church officiating.
Jean Giotto Hocking
GAINESVILLE, FL -- Jean Giotto Hocking, 69, North Lake native, died Junes 13, 2000 in the University of Wisconsin Bearing Co. and in the housekeeping department of Bell Memorial Hospital until retiring in 1987. She and her husband were active members of St. John's Catholic Church in Ishpeming and the Holy Faith Catholic Church in Gainesville.
Jean and William loved to travel and visit with their children and grandchildren in Florida, eventually making their permanent home in Gainesville.
For several years Jean was an active participant in her husband's car, both while at home and while he was hospitalized with Alzheimer's in the Lake City, FL Veteran's Hospital. He died in 1996.
After William's death, Jean formed a daily walking club and held membership in a sports facility in Gainesville.
A devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, she is survived by 4 sons; Dr. Michael P. (Debbie) Hocking of Gainesville, Terry J. (Helen) Hocking of Plano, TX and Ronald J. (Melinda) Hocking of Richardson, Indiana; three brothers, Joseph (Irene) Giotto of North Lake and Bruno (Mary) Giotto and Charles (Priscilla) Giotto of Negaunee and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Julie in 1936.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, 10AM at the Negaunee Cemetery with Fr. James Challancin, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church to officiate. The Racine Funeral Chapel of Ishpeming is handling the arrangements.
Alice Dorothy Dolaskie
SHINGLETON -- Alice Dorothy Dolaskie, age 71, of Shingleton, died on Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at 2:37pm at her daughter's home in Munising. She was born on April 21, 1930 in Shingleton, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, a brother Frank Lisac and sisters, Rose Holmes and Martha Lisac preceded her in death.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday, August 6, 2001 from noon until the time of funeral service. Pastors Mary Beth and Kurt Kovanen will conduct the funeral in the chapel of the funeral home at 2:00pm.
Gertrude Patron
ISHPEMING -- Gertrude Patron, age 88, of 757 Wabash St., Ishpeming, died Friday July 13, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming where she had been a patient for the past 2 weeks.
Gertrude was born February 26, 1913 in Ishpeming to the late James and Bessie (Knight) Dowrick. She was a life long area resident. She attended the Wesley United Methodist Church.
She is survived by 8 grandchildren, Janiece, Jeannie, Joseph and Jeffrey LaLonde all in California, Mary Bishop of Ishpeming, Peter LaLonde of Ishpeming, and Greg LaLonde of California, and Carol Harsila of IL; a nephew, Dr. David Koski of Woodruff, WI; a daughter-in-law Marie LaLonde of Ishpeming; special friend Jeanette Carlson of Ishpeming.
She was preceded in death by her husband John Patron; 3 sons, twins James and Donald LaLonde and Larry LaFave; 2 sisters, Kathryn Cowling and Ruby St. Andre; a brother James Dowrick and a grandson James LaLonde.
A memorial service will be held at the Wesley United Methodist Church on Saturday August 4, 2001 at 11 AM with the Rev. Paul Olson to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Judith Marie (Hokenson) Engman
DOLLAR BAY, MICH. -- Judith Marie (Hokenson) Engman, 53, Dollar Bay, died Tuesday afternoon at Marquette General Hospital where she had been hospitalized for two weeks.
Ms. Engman was born April 15, 1948 in Marquette, a daughter of George and Alice (Grace) Hokenson. Judy was employed for several years as a loan officer for D & N Bank.
Surviving Ms. Engman are her children, Scott and Jay Engman, both of Dollar Bay; her mother, Alice Hokenson of Marquette; siblings, Janice Edwards of Marquette, George (Carol) Hokenson of Hancock, Margaret (Mike) Antilla of Iron Mountain, Alan Hokenson of Hancock, Steven (Debbie) Hokenson of Marquette, Beverly Hokenson of Marquette, Cindy (Bob) Richard of Hancock, Dwayne (Jean) Hokenson of Houghton, Chrissy Hokenson of Marquette and Tracy (Michelle) Hokenson of Dollar Bay; two grandchildren, Jeffrey & Abigail Engman of Dollar Bay; a sister-in-law, Alice Hokenson of L'Anse; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Her father, George and a brother, Mike Hokenson preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home with Rev. Lawrence Gauthier officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Robert C. 'Bummer' Heggaton
NEGAUNEE -- Robert C. 'Bummer' Heggaton, 67, of 216 Midway Drive, Negaunee Township died at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday July 31, 2001 at his home following a 1 year illness. Mr Heggaton was born May 11, 1934 in Negaunee to William & Hilda (Johnson) Heggaton, was a graduate of Negaunee High School, class of 1952, and was a life long resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked as an accountant for the L.S. & I. Railroad for 38 years, retiring in 1994.
Robert was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee and the V.F.W. Chapter at Large. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved going to camp. He also loved a good session of cribbage.
Surviving are 4 sons; Gary Heggaton, Minneapolis, MN, Daniel Heggaton, Negaunee, David (Laurie) Heggaton, Racine, WI, Roger Heggaton, Negaunee, 3 daughters; Terese (Larry) Tamminen, Minneapolis, MN, Brenda (Barry) Gustafson, Marquette, Lois (Jason DeRocher) Heggaton, Minneapolis, MN 6 grandchildren; David St. Aubin, Rudy & Brianna Tamminen, Ashley & Kara Heggaton, Adrianna Gustafson, 2 brothers; Thomas (Elsie) Heggaton, Chicago, IL, John (Wilma) Heggaton, Negaunee, 2 sisters; Katherine Scruggs, Wilmington, Florida, died July 26, 2001 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had been a resident since 1998.
He was born November 19, 1920 in Port Huron, MI to Roy and Anna (Lewis) Fetting and had worked as a city engineer and city planner in Sarasota, FL prior to retiring in the late 1970's. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1939-1945 and was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War, and Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed wood carving and reading.
Roger is survived by two daughters, Sharon (David) Staples of Marquette and Cynthia (Delvin) Bain of Riverside, CA; two grandchildren, Michelle and Ryan Staples; a beloved cousin Marjorie Batchelor; close friends to the family, Tim, Carla and Megan O'Brien; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy and a sister Jeanne Kerr.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at 10:30 AM in the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Chapel with Pastor Ardy Johnson officiating. Burial will take place in the veterans section of Park Cemetery. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Ruth M. Mattson
ISHPEMING -- Ruth M. Mattson, 86, of Ishpeming Township, a former Negaunee and Marquette resident, died at 3:00 AM on Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center where she had been a patient for over 4 months.
Ruth was born February 19, 1915 in L'Anse Township to Jaffet and Katherine (Tikkanen) Servio and lived in Herman. The family moved to Negaunee and Ruth was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1933. She graduated from the St. Luke's School of Nursing, Marquette, worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Bell Memorial Hospital for 30 years and also did private duty nursing. She lived in Negaunee, Marquette and Ishpeming for most of her life.
Mrs. Mattson was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee and the Mary Circle. Her hobbies included ceramics, crocheting, knitting, cooking, canning, and was a dog lover who cherished her black poodle "Musta". She was a devoted homemaker, wife and mother.
Surviving are 2 sons, David (Antonia) Mattson, Middletown, R.I., Daniel Mattson, Ishpeming Township; 3 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 1 aunt Gertrude Kantola, Covington, a sister-in-law Jalma (James) Meni, Negaunee, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eino Mattson in '94 and 2 children, Darwin and Darlene.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. David Echelbarger officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ruth's memory.
The arrangements are being handled by the Koskey Funeral Home.
Beatrice M. Cardew
ISHPEMING -- Beatrice M. Cardew, age 84, of 213 S. Second St., Apt. #4, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2001 at her home in Ishpeming.
Beatrice was born January 8, 1917 in National Mine, MI to the late John and Sarah (Gill) Cardew. Beatrice served in the United States Air Force (WAC) during World War II. She worked in the banking industry as a teller in Florida and Olive Solomon of Ishpeming; a brother Louis Cardew of Illinois to Genell and the late Marshall Harmon. She grew up and graduated from high school in Michigan University. For 23 years she was employed in the Dietary Department at Marquette General Hospital, as a cook, retiring in June of 1992.
Carol loved and enjoyed caring for her family, especially relishing the time spent with her grandchildren and great - grandchildren. She also enjoyed knitting, playing cribbage, and was an enthusiastic and regular BINGO participant.
A devoted and loving wife, mother, proud grandparent, and loyal friend, she is survived by: her husband of 51 years, Donald J. Quinnell, Sr; three daughters, Judith (Gerald) Anderson and Tina Marie (Charles) Fortin both of Marquette, and Coreen "Connie" (David) Allen of Ishpeming; a son, Donald James (Carol) Quinnell, Jr of Marquette; her grandchildren, Donald John (Fiancee, Danielle Green) Fortin, Joseph Donald Quinnell, Kasey Rae Quinnell, Crystal Ann Quinnell, Donna Rae Quinnell, Melissa Sue Allen, and Kyle David Allen; great-grandchildren, Deserae Ann Fortin-Green and Savannah Lee Fortin; a brother, Richard (Orlea) Muhlhauser residing in Florida; several extended family members, including in-laws, nieces, nephews, and many friends. In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Willhite, and a brother, Carl Muhlhauser.
At Carol's request, a private family service in celebration of her life will be held at the Fassbender Funeral Home. Burial will be made in the Park Cemetery. Carol's escorts will be family members, Donald Quinnell, Jr., Charles Fortin, David Allen, Donald Fortin, Joseph Quinnell, and Gerald Anderson.
Carol's family invites relatives and friends to time for the sharing of memories and fellowship on Saturday, August 4, at the family home, 505 E. Hewitt Avenue, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Esther O. Welters
NEWBERRY -- Lifelong Newberry resident, Esther O. Welters, 96, died Wednesday afternoon at the Luce County Annex in Newberry where she had been residing since July 2nd.
Born April 8, 1905 in Newberry, daughter of the late Charles J. & Lena M. Mickelson. Esther was a 1925 graduate of Newberry High School. A devoted housewife and homemaker, she was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Rebekeh Lodge #437 both of Newberry. Esther enjoyed gardening, reading, playing cards but most importantly spending time with her family.
Besides her parents, Esther is preceded in death by her husband, Francis "Nig" Sr.; son Francis "Bud" Jr.; also several brothers and sisters. Survivors include her four grandchildren Mary (David) Brown of Newberry, Stephen (Shawn) Welters of Shepherd, David (Pam) Welters of Mio and Robert (Brenda) Welters of Norwich, KS; ten great- grandchildren and two great- great- grandchildren; brother Andrew Mickelson of Frankenmuth.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 6, 2001 at 11:00 am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry with Pastor David Heuter officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday, August 6th from 9am until time of services.

Florence Nevala
REPUBLIC -- Florence Nevala, age 88, former Republic resident died Thursday, August 2, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center where she has resided for the past month.
Florence was born August 2, 1913 in Cedarburg, WI to the late Oliver & Donna (Harsh) Warner. She attended the Champion schools and resided in Republic for most of her life.
She is survived by 4 brothers, Lewis (Rose) Warner, Oliver Warner, both of Ishpeming, Thomas (Jean) Warner of Humboldt and Lawrence Warner of Champion; 2 special friends, George Paul and Mae LaMond, along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, 4 brothers, August, Lester, Alva and John and sister Marion and special nephew Donald Nevala.
A memorial service will be held at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home at 6:00pm Monday with the Rev. Lance Roberts to officiate. Inurnment will be at the Republic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 4:30pm Monday until the time of services.
