Marion E. Kabelman
ECKERMAN -- Marion E. Kabelman, 68, of Eckerman, died Wednesday morning August 1, 2001 at her residence under the loving care of her family following a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 3, 2001 at 1:00pm at the Strongs Community Bible Church with Pastor Larry Gegner officiating. Interment will follow at Colburn Cemetery in Strongs. Friends may call at the church on Friday, August 3rd from 11:00am until time of services.

Robert C. 'Bummer' Heggaton
NEGAUNEE -- Robert C. 'Bummer' Heggaton, 67, of 216 Midway Drive, Negaunee Township died at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday July 31, 2001 at his home following a 1 year illness. Mr Heggaton was born May 11, 1934 in Negaunee to William & Hilda (Johnson) Heggaton, was a graduate of Negaunee High School, class of 1952, and was a life long resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked as an accountant for the L.S. & I. Railroad for 38 years, retiring in 1994.
Robert was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee and the V.F.W. Chapter at Large. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved going to camp. He also loved a good session of cribbage.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Annette M. (Lehtinen) Heggaton, 4 sons; Gary Heggaton, Minneapolis, MN, Daniel Heggaton, Negaunee, David (Laurie) Heggaton, Racine, WI, Roger Heggaton, Negaunee, 3 daughters; Terese (Larry) Tamminen, Minneapolis, MN, Brenda (Barry) Gustafson, Marquette, Lois (Jason DeRocher) Heggaton, Minneapolis, MN 6 grandchildren; David St. Aubin, Rudy & Brianna Tamminen, Ashley & Kara Heggaton, Adrianna Gustafson, 2 brothers; Thomas (Elsie) Heggaton, Chicago, IL, John (Wilma) Heggaton, Negaunee, 2 sisters; Katherine Scruggs, Wilmington, NC, Betty Anspach, Berkley, MI, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Paul, a sister Doris, and a son Robert Lee 'Butch' Heggaton in 1987.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM on Saturday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Christine Thomas-Echelbarger, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 5-7 PM on Friday.
William P. Cleven
ISHPEMING -- William P. Cleven, age 87, formerly of 903 N. Main St., Ishpeming, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2001 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility where he had been a resident since this past October.
William was born April 20, 1914 in Ishpeming to the late Alex and Mary Jane (Lemin) Cleven. He worked as a mechanic for the City of Ishpeming for 38 years in the Public Works Department.
Survivors include a sister Marion Polkinghorne of Ishpeming along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Ina along with 8 brothers and sisters.
A graveside inurnment service will be held at a later date at the Ishpeming Cemetery with the time to be announced.
At William's request, there will be no visitation.

Susie D. DeSonia
MARQUETTE -- Susie D. DeSonia, age 97, formerly of 222 S. Fifth St., Marquette, went to be with the Lord and was ready to go Thursday, August 2, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming.
Susie was born July 28, 1904 in Petosky, MI to the late Alfred & Emily (Pike) Wiland. She lived in Lower Michigan until moving to Marquette in 1970. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
She will be sorely missed by those surviving her, 2 sons Harry C. (Doris) Midkiff of Carson, CA, Harold (Mary) Midkiff of Ishpeming, 1 daughter Hilda (LeRoy) Nichols of Vicksburg, MI, 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, along with several nieces & nephews.
Private graveside services will be held at Northland Chapel Gardens.

THREE LAKES, MI -- Thomas E. Lincoln, age 83, of HCR 1 P.O. Box 140, Michigamme, MI (Lake Ruth) passed away Friday, August 3, 2001 at the U.P. Home Health & Hospice unit att he Bell Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Thomas was born August 4, 1917 in Saginaw, MI to the late Abe & Ida L. (Schuette) Lincoln. He lived most of his life in Saginaw, except for time spent serving in the U.S. Army durig World War II. His retirement years were spent in Florida during the winter months and summered in Michigan at Lake Ruth (Three Lakes).
Thomas was a F&AM of Michigan, member of Salina Lodge #155,a member of the Scottish Rite- Valley of Bay City and a member of Lake County Shrine Club (Bahia Temple) and a life member of the ELKS Lodge, Eustis, FL #1576. He also was a member of the Wawanowin Country Club.
Thomas was a beloved husband, father & grandfather. He is survived by his wife Catherine (Alexander) Lincoln whom he married on July 9, 1943, a daughter Mary Jo (Donald) Huycke of Oakton, VA and 2 grandchildren Tommy & Suzanne.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. Inurnment will take place at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.

Viloa M. Sikkila
L'ANSE, MI -- Viola M. Sikkila, 73, of L'Anse, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where she had been a resident since July 2000. She was born May 23, 1928 in Ewen, daughter of the late John and Anna (Kauranen) Kujala. She graduated from Ewen High School in 1946 and attended the Badger Business College in Green Bay, WI.
On February 5, 1949, she married Hugo Sikkila in Detroit, MI. He preceded her in death in 1978. Viola was a lifetime area resident. She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Covington and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a lifetime member of the Women's Auxiliary Henry Hendrickson Post 8945 in Covington and served as an auxiliary officer for a number of years. In 1981, she moved to L'Anse and became a member of the United Lutheran Church and was active in many church activities including the church choir for 18 years. She was an active volunteer for many years at the Baragaland Senior Citizens Center in L'Anse. Viola loved writing, singing, doing handiwork and caring for her grandchildren.
Mrs. Sikkila is survived by 3 sons, Byron (Kris) Sikkila of Newago, MI, Darryl Sikkila of San Diego, CA, and Timothy Sikkila of LaMesa, CA; 7 daughters, Evelyn Sikkila of L'Anse, Cheryl (Tom) Archambeau of L'Anse, Jeanne (Bob) Anderson of L'Anse, Wendy (Brent) Griffin of Marquette, MI, Pamela Sikkila of Hancock, MI, Holly (Tom) Hohman of Lansing, MI, and Mary (Roy) Michell of Frederick, MD; 11 grandchildren, Bobby, Sarah, Ashley, Craig, Gerry, April, Nathan, Allison, Justin, Hunter, and Benjamin; brother, Edsel Kujala of Frankfort, IL; two sisters, Elvie (Roger) Lee of Zion, IL and Arlene Poindexter of Tucson, AZ; and close friend and sister-in-law, Betty Perkins of L'Anse. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Elaine and Elsie and a brother Clifford.
Funeral services for Mrs. Sikkila will be held at 11:00am Monday, August 6, 2001 at the United Lutheran Church, L'Anse. Pastor Margaret Grant will officiate and intermenty will take place in the Covington Cemetery, Covington. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 10:00am until time of service. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse assisted the family with arrangements.

Vernon Howard Constantineau
MUNISING -- Vernon Howard Constantineau, age 76, of 319 Maple Street, Munising, died on Saturday morning, August 4, 2001 at the Munising Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was born in Schaeffer, Michigan on October 2, 1924 to the late Edmond and Mildred (Belanger) Constantineau. Vern graduated from Kingsford High School in 1942. He served in the South Pacific Asiatic Theater in the U.S. Army during WWII from March of 1943 to March of 1946. He married Elizabeth Meyers on December 7, 1946. She preceded him in death in October of 1966. Vern worked briefly for the Ford Motor Company in Kingsford and then for the Kingsford Company Sawmill and Charcoal Briquettes. Vern attended Northern Michigan University in 1959 and graduated from there in 1962. Mr. Constantineau began teaching various business classes at Wm. G. Mather High School in 1962. He earned his Master's Degree from NMU in 1967. Mr. Constantineau retired from teaching in the business department of Munising High School in 1988. He had married Janel Berkel in 1968 and she preceded him in death on September 3, 1995. He was a member of the Munising, Michigan and National Education Associations, Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion Roderick Prato Post. Vern was a volunteer for the Munising Senior Citizens Center and he loved to walk.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan (Bill) Kearns of Hudson, FL; son, Larry (Linda Pangborn) Constantineau of Traverse City, MI; sister, Donna Rasic of California; brothers, Roger and Donald Constantineau, both of Milwaukee, WI and Dean Constantineau of Iron Mountain; grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Vern was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Boylan, and brothers Robert and Kenneth Constantineau.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00pm. A combined Knights of Columbus and Parish Vigil Service will be conducted at 7:00pm. Father Dennis L. Borca will conduct the funeral on Monday, August 6, 2001 at Sacred Heart Church in Munising at 10:00am. Interment will be at the Mapel Grove Cemetery in Munising where members of the American Legion Honor Guard will conduct graveside services. Escort will be members of the Knights of Columbus.

NOVI -- Ellen E. Holso, age 71, summer resident of Point Abbaye, passed away on Friday, August 3, 2001, in Novi, MI. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 8, at 1:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Rev. Margaret Grant will officiate. Burial will be in the Aura Cemetery. A gathering for fellowship and a luncheon will follow the service in the Sharing Room at Jacobson Funeral Home. Florence Nevala
REPUBLIC -- Florence Nevala, age 88 former Republic resident died Thursday, August 2, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center where she has resided for the past month.
Florence was born August 2, 1913 in Cedarburg, WI, to the late Oliver & Donna (Harsh) Warner. She attended the Champion schools and resided in Republic for most of her life.
She is survived by 4 brothers, Lewis (Rose) Warner, Oliver Warner both of Ishpeming, Thomas (Jean) Warner of Humboldt & Lawrence Warner of Champion, 2 special friends George Paul & Mae LaMond, along with several nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Eino to whom she was married for over 50 years, an infant son, 4 brothers, August, Lester, Alva & John and a sister Marion.
A memorial service will be held at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home at 6:00 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Lance Roberts to officiate. Inurnment will be at the Republic Cemetery.

Mr. Walter A. Jarvis
IRON RIVER -- Mr. Walter A. Jarvis, age 87, Iron River, MI, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2001 at his home. He was born July 28, 1914 in Ishpeming, Michigan. The son of the late Hannes & Serafia (Lehtinen) Palojarvi attended the Ishpeming Schools and graduted from Ishpeming High School in 1932. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during WWII in the European Theatre. He married the former Jeanette LaFountain in 1946 in Ishpeming, MI, where the couple made their home. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1996. He was employed by Hercules Powder Company in Ishpeming working as a powder packer for many years and later was employed by Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI working in maintenance for 21 years retiring in 1976. In 1980 the couple moved to Iron River to make their home. He was a loving husband & father and always enjoyed helping his neighbors with any task. He was an avid gardener and outdoorsman. He was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, William, Walfred & Waino and 3 sisters; Lillian, Vianna & Teckla. He was a former member of the V.F.W. Survived by his wife; Jeanette, 3 sons, Gerald (Julie) Jarvis, Ishpeming, MI, Donald (Julia) Jarvis, Salem, WI, John Jarvis, Scappoose, Oregon, 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, nieces & nephews.

Jayne F. Mahowald
CLEVELAND, OHIO -- Memorial Services and Mass for Jayne F. Mahowald will be held Friday, August 10, 2001 at 9:30 AM at St. Peter's Cathedral in Marquette, followed by graveside services atHoly Cross Cemetery. Reception at 11:30 AM at St. Peter's Parish Hall.
Jayne F. Mahowald, 91, was a resident of Marquette until 1991. She died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Rae-Ann Suburban Skilled Nursing Facility in Westlake, Ohio. Most recently she had resided in North Olmsted Ohio with her son David.
She was in retail sales at JC Penney's, Montgomery Wards, and Younkers and well known as the one who could "put together an outfit to match a scarf."
She was a lifetime member of the Business and Professional Women's Club and served as President of the Marquette Chapter. For several years she coordinated the Dress A Doll contest sponsored by the First National Bank at Christmas time. She was also President of the Lady Elks for several years.
Jayne F. Mahowald was married to the late Otto F. Mahowald. She is survived by son David M. (Jane) of North Olmsted, Ohio; daughter Dorothy Talerico (John) of Seattle, Washington; sister Patricia Lindquist of Marquette; eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Wayne Mahowald, and her daughter, Margaret (Margo) Nowak. She was the sister of the late Margaret Shampine- Theobald, Catherine Hughes, Elizabeth "Betty" Erickson, Mary Kramer, Helen Manson, William Gaspar, John Gaspar, and Edward "Ted" Gaspar. She was the aunt and great aunt of many. Her parents were the late Katherine (Maney) and Peter Gaspar.

Louise Gail VanOverloop
MARQUETTE -- Louise Gail VanOverloop, 82, of 1949 Granite St., died Saturday, August 4, 2001 at her home.
She was born August 18, 1918 in Stratford, WI to Milton and Ruth (Stemler) Kellan and had moved to this area at the age of 14. Prior to retiring, she worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for the Presque Isle Radiator Service, which she and her first husband owned, and she also worked for United Way and Northern Michigan University. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and Presque Isle Chapter Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband Julian "Cud" VanOverloop; a son Charles (Marcia) Gudegast of Marquette; two sisters, Eleanor Keranen and Betty Durant and a brother Milton Kellan, Jr., all of Marquette; a nephew Reggie (Lynn) Durant of Adrian, MI; and one step-granddaughter Jessica Trewhella of Japan. She also leaves behind her two dogs Fifi and Mikkie. She was preceded in death by her first husband Henry Gudegast, a son Raymond Gudegast, her parents and grandparents.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30pm Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephen Rhoades officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LAKE WORTH, FL -- A. Esther Lilley, 93, of Lake Worth, FL passed away August 5, 2001 at the American-Finnish Nursing Home in Lake Worth following a lengthy illness. She was born on Drummond Island, MI, June 12, 1908 to the late Elias and Ida (Sikkila) Koskenmaki. Esther attended the Watton-Covington area schools. In 1931, she married Paul Lilley and they resided in Herman. He preceded her in death. They had no children.
Ester became a writer and artist. She published 4 books: FATHER SAID EAT, DON'T GIGGLE; A MAN AND HIS WILDERNESS; PLAY IT LIKE EVE WITH ADAM; MY BIG MAN JOEY. In addition, she published many stories and articles, most recently as a monthly column in The New World Finn newspaper. She has a manuscript, LILY LAINE GOES TO TOWN, which was published in serial form in the Amerikan Uutiset newspaper, and she was working on a mystery novel about people in the American-Finish Nursing Home. Copies of some of her books are available for purchase from her niece, Joyce Koskenmaki, 1100 Hill St. Hancock, MI 49930.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including, locally, Joyce Koskenmaki of Hancock, Delores Soli of L'Anse, and Maria Elmblad of L'Anse and Arizona. Several grandnieces and grandnephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Helmi who died as a child, Ingrid Longlake, of Butte, MI and Elma Nurmela of Watton, her brothers, Emil and Elmer of L'Anse, and Dave Koskenmaki of Butte, Montana.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lilley will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 10, 2001 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse. Pastor Margaret Grant will officiate and intermenty will take place in the Herman Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse assisted the family with arrangements.
George Kenneth Kokko
GWINN -- George Kenneth Kokko, 72, of 3264 Crooked Lake Lane (Bass Lake West), Gwinn, MI, peacefully ended his journey on earth to be with his Lord, at his home on August 7, 2001.
Born in Negaunee, Michigan on January 19, 1929 to George August and Ina Sophia (Mattson) Kokko, he attended Negaunee Public Schools and graduated in 1947. His 'growing up' summers were spent at the Mattson farm in Eagle Mills and during high school he worked in Northern Idaho with the U.S. Forest Service Blister Rust project. He held several jobs at local companies. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952 and was discharged at the rank of Tech Sergeant. He returned to work at Cambria-Jackson Mine until 1954.
On June 26, 1954 he married Lois Wiseman at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Skandia, MI. Moving to Moscow, ID to attend the College of Forestry at the University of Idaho, he graduated with a B.S. in Forest and Range Management in 1959. Remaining in Idaho, Montana and North Dakota while working for the U.S. Forest Service, he continued to enjoy his knowledge of hunting, trapping and fishing.
Positions he held were Blister Rust Camp Boss, St. Joe National Forest, Clarkia, ID; District Range Technician, Custer National Forest, Watford City, ND; Timber Sales and Fire Manager, Ft. Howes District, Custer National Forest, Ashland, MT; Job Corps Work Leader, Dickinson Job Corps Camp, Dickinson, ND; Lands Staff, in charge of Acquisitions and Rights-of-Ways, Custer National Forest, Billings, MT.
Moving back to Negaunee, Michigan in 1973, he became a civilian employee at K.I. Sawyer, AFB working as a carpenter and retiring in 1985.
George, "Ken", will be truly missed by family and friends. He was great at repairing and building anything. A trip in the woods or cross-country meant identification of any plant or tree as well as descriptions of the geographical features. His free spirit let him try any idea that he wanted to. A sense of humor was always present and helped him through the past 8 years of severe emphysema.
He attended Emanuel Lutheran Church, Skandia, MI and was a member of the Bass Lake Association.
He is survived by Lois, his wife of 47 years; 3 daughters, Linda Smith, Columbia Falls, MT; Mrs. Robert (Lisa) Ameen, Wasilla, AK; and Jolene Kokko, at home; two granddaughters, Krystal and Cedar Smith, Columbia Falls, MT; two sisters, Mrs. Carol Akkala, Lady Lake, FL and Mrs. Joseph (Nancy) Friedgen, Nokomis, FL; and his mother-in-law, Sylvia Wiseman of Skandia.
His parents and dearly loved aunts and uncles preceded his passing.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, August 10 at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Skandia with Rev. Chad Christensen officiating. Inurnment will be in West Branch Cemetery following the service. The family suggests no flowers or monetary gifts. Condolences will be appreciated.
