William H. Finkbeiner
MARQUETTE -- William H. Finkbeiner, 85, of 1025 Pine Street, Marquette, died peacefully Thursday afternoon at his home following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Finkbeiner was born on November 4, 1915 in Munising, Michigan to the late L. Harry and Inez Victoria (Thornton) Finkbeiner. He had previously lived in Negaunee since the age of 12 and had resided in Marquette since 1946.
Bill was a 1934 graduate of Negaunee High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northern Michigan University in 1938. He then served in Iceland with the United States Army during World War II.
At the conclusion of his service, Bill taught briefly in Fairgrove, Michigan. He then returned to Marquette and began work with the Michigan Inspection Bureau until his retirement in 1975.
Bill's hobbies included playing saxophone in the Negaunee City Band for over 50 years, serving as band master for the Ahmed Temple Shrine Band for over 30 years and he also enjoyed raising German Shepherd dogs who were his faithful companions. Bill enjoyed spending time at camp where he spent many hours picking berries.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marquette, the Northern Michigan University Alumni Association, a life member of the Negaunee VFW Post #3165, was a member of Richard Jopling American Legion Post #44 in Marquette, was a life member of Marquette Masonic Lodge #101 Free and Accepted Masons, the Francis M. Moore Consistory, Ahmed Temple Shrine, Royal Arch Masons Chapter 43, served as High Priest of the Grand Council of the High Priesthood, was Thrice Illustrious Master of Knights Templar Lake Superior Commandry #30 and also served as a DeMolay dad for many years. Bill served as president of the Marquette noon Kiwanis club in 1965.
He was a devoted husband and family man who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 59 years, the former Phyllis I. Cory whom he married on February 14, 1942 at First United Methodist Church in Battle Creek, Michigan; three children, Cory W. (Patricia) Finkbeiner, Robert T. (Marianne) Finkbeiner and Linda S. (William) LaMora, Jr., all of Marquette; three grandchildren, James A., William C. (Wendy) and David R. Finkbeiner, all of Marquette; five great grandchildren, Damien J., Emma A., Courtney E., Garrett W. and Nathaniel C. Finkbeiner, all of Marquette; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents were two brothers, Thornton and Derwood Finkbeiner.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Monday from 4 to 8pm where Masonic services will take place at 7:30pm. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday beginning at 11am at First United Methodist Church where funeral services will be held at 12 noon with the Rev. Stephen Rhoades and the Rev. Ross Nicholson officiating. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.
Mr. Finkbeiner's escorts will be his two sons, Cory W. and Robert T. Finkbeiner; his son-in-law, William P. LaMora, Jr. and his three grandsons, James A., William C. and David R. Finkbeiner.

NEWBERRY -- Arlet E. Norden, lifelong Newberry resident, died Saturday morning August 11, 2001 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry. Carl G. Lehto
ISHPEMING -- Carl G. Lehto, age 70, of 572 Mather Ave., Ishpeming died at 2:25 pm on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for the past 32 days.
Carl was born April 28, 1931 in Laurium to Peter E. & Jennie S. (Tulppo) Lehto, moved to Ishpeming in 1940 and was a graduate of Ishpeming High School in 1949. He married Carol J. Allen on March 7, 1953. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War serving in the Medical Corp. He earned a Bachelors Degree from NMU in 1960, a Masters Degree of Education Leadership from Eastern Mich. University in 1970 and a Masters of Education & Science from Central Mich. Univeristy. He spent 30 years in education and was the assistant principal at Fenton High School before returning as principal of Ishpeming High School in 1981. He retired in 1987.
Mr. Lehto was a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Ishpeming. He was a die-hard Packer & University of Michigan football fan and enjoyed hunting & fishing.
Surviving are his wife, Carol, 2 sons; Peter of Fenton, Paul (Julie) Lehto, and grandson Isaiah of Escanaba, 1 daughter, Bonnie Lehto, San Francisco, CA, 2 brothers; James (Joy) Lehto, Safford, AZ, Richard (Joyce) Lehto, Ishpeming, 1 sister, Dorothy Fedorow, Chicago IL, several nieces, nephews & cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Ruth and a brother Clifford.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Kordish, pastor of the Salisbury United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will be in the Northland Chapel Gardens columbarium. There will be no visitation.
Fred Brisson
MARQUETTE -- Fred Brisson, 87, of 1703 South Front Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Saturday afternoon, August 11, 2001, at his home in the care and comfort of his family and the caregivers of Lake Superior Hospice. He had been in ill health for the past six months. Fred was born January 8, 1914 in Marquette, a son of Emanuel and Mary (LaValley) Brisson, and was a lifelong Marquette resident. On November 19, 1948 he married Marian VanWormer in St. Peter Cathedral. He served in the US Army during World War II, and was involved in the campaigns and battles of New Guinea and Luzon, being awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star, American Defense Service Ribbon, and the American Theater Service Ribbon. Fred was employed in the construction industry as a carpenter through Carpenter's Union Local #958, and also with Menze Construction, for over 40 years, retiring in 1979. Fred was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and going to his camp on Big Shag Lake in Gwinn. He was always on the go and enjoyed puttering around and making his daily jaunts to the Marquette Big Boy to have coffee with his buddies. He was a member of the former St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and currently a member of St. Peter Cathedral, and a member of Marquette Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #405.
Survivors include: a sister, Agnes (Arden) Contois of Marquette; a brother, Henry (Mary) Brisson of Marquette; a sister-in-law, Estelle Brisson of Marquette; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends, including his Big Boy coffee buddies. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Brisson in 1986; a sister, Marie Shorkey; brothers, Manuel, Max, and William Brisson; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Catherine "Peg" LaRue. Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 14, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in St. Peter Cathedral with Rev. Msgr. Louis Cappo, rector, as celebrant. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will be held in the cathedral hall following the graveside services. BARAGA -- Mary L. LaBeau, age 79 of Baraga passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital skilled nurse unit. The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 13, at 2:00 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Fr. Barth M. Bogetto
NEGAUNEE -- Barth M. Bogetto, age 90, of 539 Lake St. Negaunee died Monday morning, Aug. 13, 2001 at the Emergency Room of Bell Memorial Hospital.
Barth was born Aug. 5,1911 in Princeton to Bert & Pauline (Bertoldo) Bogetto. He married Mary T. Renaldi on Sept. 19,1935 and moved to Negaunee in 1937. He worked as a salesman for Cohodas Brothers for 37 years, retiring in 1974.
Mr. Bogetto was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee where he was an altar server for many years. He was a life time & very active member of the Negaunee Knights of Columbus Council and was a member St Vincent dePaul Society. His hobbies included playing cards, gardening, hunting, fishing & cooking. He recently greatly enjoyed the celebration of his 90th birthday with family & friends.
Surviving are his wife, Mary, 1 son, Anthony (Sandra) Bogetto, Ishpeming, 2 daughters; Maryann (Thomas) Moore, Two Rivers, Wl, Patricia (Robert) Hill, Negaunee, 7 grandchildren; Stacie Nardi, Tricia (Mark) Schlicht, Nadine (David) Ruokolainen, Kelly (Joe) Scheur, Kathy (Pete) Engeldinger, Kevin (Jennifer) Hill, Jason (Christine) Hill, 9 great grandchildren, 1 brother, William (Sharon) Fountain, Gwinn, 2 sisters, Irene (Dawson) Carriere, Champion, Dora Mussatto, Gwinn, several nieces & nephews. Harold A. "Harpo" Menapace
GWINN -- Harold Antonio "Harpo" Menapace, 81, of 315 W. Iron Street, Gwinn, entered eternal life Sunday, August 12, 2001 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Harold was born May 11, 1920 in Crystal Falls, a son of the late Guido Frank and Cassie Mae (Parker) Menapace and was raised in Negaunee. He had been a Gwinn resident for the past six years, previously residing in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, area. As a young man, Harold worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Alberta for a time and then joined the Michigan National Guard, Ishpeming Armory, where he was a member of the 107th Engineers - 32nd Division of the Red Arrow. He later served in the US Army during World War II, from October 16, 1939 to August 5, 1945, serving in Germany and being involved in the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion. Following his honorable discharge, Harold was employed as a truck driver, primarily with the Clairmont Transfer Company, for over 47 years, retiring in 1981. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the family camp on Lake Mehl, and having th companionship of his canine pal, Duffy. He also loved to play BINGO and visit his coffee friends at Jerry's Wilderness Room and Lynn's Korner Kafe. Harold was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviviors include: his son, Eugene (Sally) Menapace of Marquette; two daughters, Harolyn Menapace of Marquette and Nadene (Stephen Judd) Menapace of Gwinn; grandchildren, Tia Menapace, Tammy Wills, Cassie Menapace, and Heather LaCombe; his former wife, Jean Menapace of Marquette; and a sister, Elaine Newman of Palmer. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by an infant son, Alan Menapace in 1946; a brother-in-law, Joseph Newman Sr. A Harold's request, no public services will be scheduled. A private family service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
Joanne K. Liuha
NEGAUNEE -- Joanne K. Liuha, age 66, of 416 Croix St. Negaunee died at 9:24 am on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001 at the Ernergency Room of Bell Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack.
Joanne was born July 18,1935 in Escanaba to Charles & Tyne (Mattila) Harju, was raised and educated in Rock, Ml before moving to Negaunee in 1949. She was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1953. She earned her Bachelors & Masters degrees in education from Northern Michigan University. Joanne began her teaching career in 1957 in the Republic School System. She married Waino A. Liuha, formerly of Wakefield, on Aug. 3,1957. She joined the faculity of the Negaunee Public Schools in 1958 where she taught High School music & English. She later moved to the elementary level where she taught until her retirement in 1980.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee. She served on many board & committees in the Marquette County Area. She was instrumental in developing the Negaunee Commission on Aging and the Statewide Young Authors Program for elementary students She was a member of the V.A. Romo Post #3165 V.F. W. Auxiliary, the Negaunee Women's Club, the Retired Teachers Association, the Marquette County Musicians Association. She was always willing to volunteer for whatever and whenever needed.
Music was a big part of Joanne's life; finding her as a church organist for several local congregations, most notably Immanuel Lutheran Church where she had also directed the church choir. She also played at the Marquette Christian Science Church later in her career.
She is survived by her husband, Waino A. Liuha, daughter Katherine, of Ishpeming, brother Denis (Mary Ann) Harju, of Woodridge, IL, 4 nephews, 2 nieces, 2 great nephews and 2 great nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, John Koski, and brother David Harju.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Christine Thomas-Echelbarger officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet friends in the Immanuel Fellowship Hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Negaunee Area Community Funds (Educational interests) in Mrs. Liuha's memory. Joanne's family would like to remind you of organ & tissue donor needs.

Joe Rodney Potila
ISHPEMING -- Joe Rodney Potila, age 52 of 1050 Cooper Lake Rd., Ishpeming passed away at his home in the loving arms of his wife on Saturday, August 11, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Joe was born November 2, 1948 in Ishpeming to the late Ernest and Irma (Waara) Potila. He was a graduate of the National Mine High School. Joe then served in the United States Army, Infantry division during the Vietnam War having received the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Air Medal, the Bronze Star and Marksman. Upon his discharge from the service in 1970 he moved to Salt Lake City, UT. In 1973 he moved back to the Ishpeming area where he has resided since. In the mid-80's while attending N.M.U. he received a Barnard award for excellence in writing.
Joe co-wrote and composed 6 successful comedy albums. He was perhaps best known as the voice of the popular novelty songs "The Second Week of Deer Camp" and "Rusty Chevrolet". Joe was a freelance writer and owner of the Shields Publishing Co. which produced The Yellow Snow Gazette and The Yellow Snow Meltdown of which Joe was the author, illustrator and publisher. He also worked as a Medical Transcriptionist for Typing Unlimited. He would take time from his work to enjoy some fly fishing or to watch the Chicago Cubs.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years Rhonda Potila of Ishpeming; a daughter Kristi (Jason) Congdon; two sons- Ryan Potila (Jen Jacques and her daughter Julia), and Evan Potila (Samantha Andrews), 2 very special grandchildren- Tyler Potila and Jadelyn Congdon all of Marquette; five sisters- Laura (Leon) Korte of Ishpeming, Pat (Wayne) Johnson of Neagunee, Cheryl Kier of Murray, UT, Susan (Dennis) Winslow of Murray, UT and Amy (George) Fredrickson of Ishpeming; 3 brothers- Ronald (Sharron) Potila of Kearns, UT, Kenton (Lisa) Potila of Ishpeming and Dan Potila of Ishpeming; his mother-in-law Mary Louise Blackham of Connell, WA; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Candace Potila on June 15, 2001.
A Memorial Service will be held at 5:00 PM on Thursday, August 16, 2001 at the Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Virginia Eggert to officiate.

BATTLE CREEK, MI -- Mrs. Elizabeth Marion Trewhella, 85, of Battle Creek, MI, died Saturday, August 11, 2001 at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility, where she has resided since 1993. She was born May 9, 1916, in Ishpeming. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, with Rev. Ron L. Keller officiating. Ruth Louise Bengtson
MUNISING -- Ruth Louise Bengtson, age 92, formerly of 401 W. Onota Street, died on Saturday, August 11, 2001 at 7:15 p.m. at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising where she had been a resident since l998. Ruth was born on May 18, 1909 in Ishpeming, Michigan to the late William K. and Ida (Johnson) Nesbitt and moved to Marquette with her family in 1913. She attended Marquette Senior High School and went to work after her
junior year at the Michigan Bell Telephone Company. She married Emil Bengtson on December 24,1929. They were married over fifty-five years before he preceded her in death on October 14,1985. During WWII, Ruth worked at the Munising Paper Company. Following the war, she worked for fifteen years as an operator for the Munising Telephone Company. She also worked at the Munising Co-op and retired from the People's Store in May of 1971. Ruth was a member of the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising since 1937. She was active with her church being a member of the Lutheran Church Women and Faith Circle and teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Ruth was a Cub Scout Den Mother, active in the Rebeccah Lodge and Past Noble Grand, a former member of the Munising Historical Society, and a member of the Munising Senior Citizens. She enjoyed bowling, crafts, and oil painting. She was a talented painter and she helped form the Munising Art Club.
Ruth is survived by her two sons - Ronald C. (Ann) Bengtson of Albuquerque, NM and William K. (Virginia) Bengtson of Yuma, AZ, grandchildren Linda L. Bengtson of Newbury Park, CA, Denise A. Rainier of Lakewood, CA, .Tulia L. Weatherford of Littleton, CO; and Matthew K. Bengtson of Grant's Pass, OR; greatgrandchildren - Kristen and Bryce Weatherford of Littleton, CO, Nicholas Rainier of Lakewood, CA, and Gavin, Kaylee, and Jobe Bengtson of Grant's Pass, OR; sisters Isabel (Joe) Green of Trenary and Evelyn Bell of Marquette; brother Robert Nesbitt of Henderson, NV; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was also preceded in death by a brother, William Nesbitt, and sisters, Dorothy Neault, Marion Call, and Grace Foreacre.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. The funeral will be conducted on Friday, August 17, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. from the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
Wayne Parkkonen
NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- Wayne Parkkonen, 70, of 5 County Road 480, died Monday, August 13, 2001 at his home. He was in ill health for the past five months.
He was born in Negaunee, July 22, 1931 to the late Wilfred Jalmer and Esther Anna (Levaniemi) Parkkonen. Wayne attended Negaunee Public Schools, graduating in 1949. He was employed for two years by CCI, then was drafted into the army. He served from 1952 to 1954. He was a Korean War Veteran and was with the Army of Occupation in Germany for 19 months. Upon returning home, he worked for CCI for a short time and for Robbins Flooring Co. from 1954 to 1955. He married Mary Jane Korpi in 1954. Wayne was employed with the Negaunee City Police Dept. from 1955 to 1981, when he retired. He served as Sgt., acting Chief, and then Chief. His wife died in 1985 after 31 years of marriage. They had one son, Stephen of Adrian and one stepson, Rodney of Marquette.
Wayne enjoyed Tiger baseball and Packer football. He also enjoyed oil painting, woodworking and his dog. He ws preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Julia, one brother, Sigfrid and his first wife Mary Jane.
He leaves his wife Mary Joan, whom he married in 1989, his son; Stephen, his stepson; Rodney Parkkonen, three brothers; Eugene (Kathy) of Roseville, Elden (Rose) of Clarksburg, and Neilan of Negaunee, seven step children, Raymond (Geraldine) Peura of Aurora OH, James (Debbie) Peura of Lakeville. MN, Alan (Jennifer) Peura of Negaunee Twp., Kathleen (Gregory) Zorza of Forsyth Twp., Deborah (Ronald) Long of Phoenix, AZ; Ann (Al) Howell of Negaunee Twp; and Janet (Dave) Jylha of Negaunee Twp., 14 step grandchildren, 8 step great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at 12:00 noon at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. David Echelbarger officiating. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 11:00 am until the time of services.
Memorials can be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. Pallbearers will be Alan Peura, David Jylha, Alan Howell, James Peura, Ron Long, Mark Karki and Gregory Zorza.

Edward Korenich
GERMFASK -- Edward Korenich, age 87, of Route #1, Box 68 Grant Road, Germfask died August 13, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born March 14, 1914 in Kellogg, Idaho the son of Maro and Catherine (Vulentich) Korenich. He moved to Manistique in 1922 from Butte, Montana following the death of his parents and was raised by Peter and Mary Korenich. He attended the St. Francis de Sales School.
On September 23, 1936 he married Rose J. Jolly in Germfask.
Ed owned and operated the Jolly Inn Bar in Germfask from 1946 until 1971 and sail the Great Lakes on the M.V. Nicolet from 1968 until he retired in 1978. He was previously employed with Jolly Logging and also engaged in farming. He was a former member of the Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing and reading and was an avid Green Bay Packers and New York Yankees fan.
He is survived by his wife, Rose of Germfask; two sons, Phillip (Mary) Korenich of Engadine and Anthony Korenich of Manistique; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two nieces; one nephew and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Kathryn and Annie and a brother Anton.
Visitation will be at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 16, 2001. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, August 17, 2001 with Father Glenn Theoret officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.

Elizabeth Marion Trewhella
BATTLE CREEK -- Mrs. Elizabeth Marion Trewhella, 85, passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2001 at the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility where she had been a resident since 1993.
She was born May 9, 1916 in Ishpeming to John James and Lily (Bowden) Waters. She was a graduate of Ishpeming High School. She married Calvin S. Trewhella on April 21, 1944 in Ishpeming. Elizabeth was employed by Morgan Heights Hospital in Marquette. In 1945, they moved to Battle Creek from Ishpeming. After moving to Battle Creek, she was employed by Weston Biscuit Co. for a few years years and then at the former Lakeview General Hospital from 1965 until retirement after 13 years in the dietary department.
Elizabeth was a member of Birchwood United Methodist Church and former member of it's Esther Circle. She loved to bake and there were always "pasties" and other goodies during the holidays. She enjoyed making ceramics, reading, spending time with the children and grandchildren, visits to the zoo and family trips to Florida.
Elizabeth is survived by a Son, James C. Trewhella of Marshall, MI; Daughters Sharon E. Jones of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Sue E. Thompson of Battle Creek; 3 Grandchildren; and a Brother Robert Waters of Ishpeming.
She is preceded in death by her Husband Calvin S. Trewhella in 1965; 2 Brothers, Reggie and James Waters; and 3 Sisters, Elsie, Ina and Elizabeth.
Visitation will be held after noon Tuesday at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Family will be present form 2-4pm & 6-8pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 1pm Wednesday at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with Rev. Ron L. Keller officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to the Cystic Fibrosis Association or Calhoun County Medical Care Facility.
