Charles "Chuck" Carlson
PEAVY FALLS -- Charles "Chuck" Carlson, 82 of 245 Jule Lk. Rd., Peavy Falls, died Tuesday August 14, at the VA Medical Center in Milwuakee. Chuck was born January 13, 1919 in Iron Mountain, son of the late Charles and Julia (Yuhasey) Carlson. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1937. Chuck was one of the original settlers in the Peavy Falls area and began developing his property during the time of the early logging camps. He worked for Ford Motor Co. before enlisting in the service in 1941. He served with the United States Marine Corps during WWII and spent 4 years in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He married Patricia Berg on June 28, 1952 in Iron Mountain. Following his return from WWII he started the Jule Lake Greenhouse. He and his wife operated the greenhouse for 15 years. Chuck was also employed by the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain for 26 years, retiring in 1987.
He is survived his wife Pat, a son Shawn of Peavy Falls, a sister, Margaret (Howard) Benson of Orlando, FL, several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10-1:00pm Saturday August 18 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Michael March will officiate. Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens. Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is in charge of arrangements.
Juliene Carol Berglund
MARQUETTE -- Juliene Carol Berglund, 67, of 1305 Pioneer Rd., died Tuesday, August 14, 2001 in the Hospice Unit of Bell Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient since last Friday.
She was born April 9, 1934 in Marquette to Chris and Florence (LaFayette) Miller and was a life long area resident. She was a graduate of the St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Luke's Hospital, Bell Memorial Hospital and the Acocks Medical Facility. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Juliene is survived by her husband Russell, to whom she had been married for 32 years; a daughter Angela of Marquette, a sister Arley Miller and two brothers Floyd and Donald (Emma) Miller, all of Marquette, several nieces and nephews and a special friend Pauline Miller of Marquette.
Private services were held this morning in Park Cemetery. The Swanson- Lundquist Funeral Home assisted the family.
Mildred M. Jossens
ISHPEMING -- Mildred M. Jossens, 75, formerly of 204 N. 7th St., Ishpeming, died at 4:05 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center where she had been a patient since June of this year.
Mildred was born Oct. 20, 1925 in Ishpeming to Arthur & Elizabeth 'Betty' Matheson, attended Ishpeming High School and had worked for the H.W. Gossard Co.
Survivng are 2 sons, Larry (Anita) Jossens, Negaunee, Edward Jossens, Green Bay, WI, 2 daughters; Maxine (Michael) Denofre, Ishpeming, Mari (James) Ayotte, Ishpeming, 1 brother, Everett Matheson, Salt Lake City, UT, 2 sisters: Helen LeSage and Dolores Besander, both of Ishpeming, 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters; Irene & Evelyn, 2 brothers; Glen & Gordon.
Honoring Mildred's request, there will be no services. Interment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The Koskey Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Roy A. Jolgren
BARAGA -- Roy A. Jolgren, age 82, of Pelkie, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. The visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in the Pelkie Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
Arthur W. Kannisto
RUMELY -- Arthur W. Kannisto, age 86, of Farmington Hills and formerly of Rumely, died on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 in West Bloomfield, Ohio.
She was born April 9, 1921 in Akron, Ohio, with Rev. John D. Mashek officiating. Burial at Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation 10 a.m. until time of service. Memorials may be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church or a charity of ones choice.

James Calvin Vrooman
MUNISING -- James Calvin Vrooman formerly of Trenary, died on Sunday, August 12, 2001 at 8:30 a.m. at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. Jim was born on May 12, 1925 in Scotia (Greeley County), Wisconsin area and moved to Trenary before entering in the U.S. Army on August 12, 1943. Jim served in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign during WWII and earned two bronze service stars for battles at Rhineland and Central Europe. He also earned the EAME and American Campaign Medals and the Good Conduct Medal. Jim was discharged on April 9, 1946. He married Clarice "Kia" Krook on March 15, 1947. The were married fory-nine years before she preceded him in death on March 15, 1996. In 1961, Jim went to work at the Trenary Co-op. He worked many different jobs there and retired from as the manager of the co-op in the late l980's. Jim was a past member of the Trenary Lions, he enjoyed fly fishing, and he was an avid gardener.
He is survived by his children - Christine (Daryle) Heidtman of Chilton, WI and Trenary, Judy (Kenneth) Miller of Oscoda, MI, Michael Vrooman of Topeka, KS, Linda Lee of North Carolina; brother - John Vrooman of Michigan died August 12, 2001 at his home.
He was born September 16, 1961 in Manistique and attended the Manistique Area Schools. He spent the greater part of his life in Manistique, moving to Prudenville two years ago.
Kem was employed in the forest products industry and was very involved in traditional Native American crafts and activities.
He is survived by a son, George LaVance of Manistique; parents, Sam and Marg Warren of Manistique; maternal grandmother, Vera Udell of Manistique; two brothers, Kris (Karen) Glidden of Ogden, UT and Billy (Tonya) Chandanais of Prudenville, MI; two sisters, Kelley Whitefeather and Karri Truitt of Manistique; stepbrother, Samuel Warren of Lake Placid, FL; stepsister, Sandrea (Mike) Brazee of Wilmington, Michigan. He was born on June 11, 1915 in Gwinn, North Carolina.
Bernice was born on July 2, 1919 in Ishpeming to Anna and Edward Carlson. She grew up in Ishpeming and graduated from the Ishpeming High School. On October 18, 1947 Bernice married Lloyd Davenport. The couple lived in Milwaukee and later moved to Garner, Michigan on January 29, 1919 to the late Joseph and Mary (Schilling) Rousseau. Joe graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School and Wm. G. Mather High School in 1938. On March 23, 1941, he married Alice M. Bovan. He entered the U.S. Army and later joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in Hondo, Texas where he spent the next several years until he was discharged in 1945. After returning home, he graduated from Northern Michigan. He then became the principal at Sexton High School and the first principal at Harry Hill High School in Lansing. He later accepted a position as Director of Special Services with the Board of Education, retiring from there in 1982 when he and Alice returned home to AuTrain. Joe was a member of St. Therese Catholic Mission in AuTrain, the Pictured Rocks Golf & Country Club, and the American Legion Post #131. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, being outdoors, reading and poetry. Joe loved his home and community in AuTrain.
He is survived by his wife of over sixty years, Alice, of AuTrain; their children- Michael (Vicki) Rousseau of Mason, MI, James (Pamela) Rousseau of Webster, NY, Josette (John) Tanner of Ovid, MI, Teresa Rousseau of Sonoma, CA, David (Tammie) Rousseau of Bath, MI, and Mary Jo (Kyle) Abronowitz of Haslett, MI; 11 grandchildren- Stephen, Michelle, Richard, Nicole, Jodi, Patrick, Melissa, Andy, Arianna, Terra, & Breaunna; 7 great grandchildren- Chelsey, Jared, Zachary, Taylor, Matthew, James Allen, & Danielle; sister- Mary Lou Rousseau of Missouri with his family in 1915. In 1920 he moved to Michigan, (906)226-2711. Prayer service is at 7pm at the funeral home. Visitation will continue after 10:00am on Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at the funeral home until the cortege leaves in procession to Saint Peters Cathedral. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00am at the church with Msgr. Louis Cappo officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Marquette, Wisconsin by his dear Aunt, Marie Marckx. He graduated from the Bishop Baraga High School in 1951 and later served in the US Army as a Corporal in the military police division in Germany during the Korean War. He worked as a truck driver for REA Express and Clairmont Trucking for many years, and as a maintenance supervisor for Norlite Nursing Center. Donald was an avid fisherman, hunter, and loved baking. Survivors include: two sons, David P. (Marianne) Brugman and Donald J. (Susan Larsen) Brugman both of Marquette; four daughters, Dawn L. (Mike) Hiironen and Shari L. Brugman both of Marquette, Diane Guzman of Alaska, and Kirsten Brugman of Hawaii; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his
very dear friend, Nancy Mathews of Marquette. Don was preceded in death by his father Louis Brugman in 1977 and by his mother Marguerite M. Davison in 1999. At Don's request, no public services will be scheduled. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
