Charles "Chuck" Carlson
PEAVY FALLS -- Charles "Chuck" Carlson, 82 of 245 Jule Lk. Rd., Peavy Falls, died Tuesday August 14, at the VA Medical Center in Milwuakee. Chuck was born January 13, 1919 in Iron Mountain, son of the late Charles and Julia (Yuhasey) Carlson. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1937. Chuck was one of the original settlers in the Peavy Falls area and began developing his property during the time of the early logging camps. He worked for Ford Motor Co. before enlisting in the service in 1941. He served with the United States Marine Corps during WWII and spent 4 years in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He married Patricia Berg on June 28, 1952 in Iron Mountain. Following his return from WWII he started the Jule Lake Greenhouse. He and his wife operated the greenhouse for 15 years. Chuck was also employed by the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain for 26 years, retiring in 1987.
He is survived his wife Pat, a son Shawn of Peavy Falls, a sister, Margaret (Howard) Benson of Orlando, FL, several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10-1:00pm Saturday August 18 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Michael March will officiate. Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens. Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is in charge of arrangements.
Juliene Carol Berglund
MARQUETTE -- Juliene Carol Berglund, 67, of 1305 Pioneer Rd., died Tuesday, August 14, 2001 in the Hospice Unit of Bell Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient since last Friday.
She was born April 9, 1934 in Marquette to Chris and Florence (LaFayette) Miller and was a life long area resident. She was a graduate of the St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Luke's Hospital, Bell Memorial Hospital and the Acocks Medical Facility. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Juliene is survived by her husband Russell, to whom she had been married for 32 years; a daughter Angela of Marquette, a sister Arley Miller and two brothers Floyd and Donald (Emma) Miller, all of Marquette, several nieces and nephews and a special friend Pauline Miller of Marquette.
Private services were held this morning in Park Cemetery. The Swanson- Lundquist Funeral Home assisted the family.
Mildred M. Jossens
ISHPEMING -- Mildred M. Jossens, 75, formerly of 204 N. 7th St., Ishpeming, died at 4:05 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center where she had been a patient since June of this year.
Mildred was born Oct. 20, 1925 in Ishpeming to Arthur & Elizabeth 'Betty' Matheson, attended Ishpeming High School and had worked for the H.W. Gossard Co.
Survivng are 2 sons, Larry (Anita) Jossens, Negaunee, Edward Jossens, Green Bay, WI, 2 daughters; Maxine (Michael) Denofre, Ishpeming, Mari (James) Ayotte, Ishpeming, 1 brother, Everett Matheson, Salt Lake City, UT, 2 sisters: Helen LeSage and Dolores Besander, both of Ishpeming, 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters; Irene & Evelyn, 2 brothers; Glen & Gordon.
Honoring Mildred's request, there will be no services. Interment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The Koskey Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Roy A. Jolgren
BARAGA -- Roy A. Jolgren, age 82, of Pelkie, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. The visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Rev. Harriet T. Selle
BARBERTON, OHIO -- Harriet T. Selle, 80, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Barberton Citizens Hospital in Barberton, Ohio.
She was born April 9, 1921 in Akron, Ohio and was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Ladies Guild.
Survived by daughter, Karen (Karl) Lehman; sister, Vera Custer; grandchildren, David Lehmann, Sarah Selle, Nathan Selle and Andrew Selle.
Funeral service Saturday, 11 a.m. at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, 566 W. Park Avenue, Barberton, Ohio, with Rev. John D. Mashek officiating. Burial at Greenlawn Cemetery. James Calvin Vrooman
MUNISING -- James Calvin Vrooman formerly of Trenary, died on Sunday, August 12, 2001 at 8:30 a.m. at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. Jim was born on May 12, 1925 in Scotia (Greeley County), Nebraska to the late Vernon and Sadie (Henke) Vrooman. He was raised in the Racine, Wisconsin area and moved to Trenary before entering in the U.S. Army on August 12, 1943. Jim served in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign during WWII and earned two bronze service stars for battles at Rhineland and Central Europe. He also earned the EAME and American Campaign Medals and the Good Conduct Medal. Jim was discharged on April 9, 1946. He married Clarice "Kia" Krook on March 15, 1947. The were married fory-nine years before she preceded him in death on March 15, 1996. In 1961, Jim went to work at the Trenary Co-op. He worked many different jobs there and retired from as the manager of the co-op in the late l980's. Jim was a past member of the Trenary Lions, he enjoyed fly fishing, and he was an avid gardener.
He is survived by his children - Christine (Daryle) Heidtman of Chilton, WI and Trenary, Judy (Kenneth) Miller of Oscoda, MI, Michael Vrooman of Topeka, KS, Linda Lee of Indianapolis, IN, and Carl Vrooman of Lowell, MI; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sister Bessie Stewart of North Carolina; brother - John Vrooman of Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and Kia, a sister, Edrie Kitzman, and a brother, Laverne Vrooman, also preceded Jim in death.
A memorial service will be held at the First Lutheran Church of Trenary on Monday, August 20, 2001 at 3:00 p.m.
Kem Edward Glidden
PRUDENVILLE, MI -- Former Manistique resident Kem Edward Glidden, Anishinabe spirit name Yellow Cloud, age 39 of Prudenville, Michigan died August 12, 2001 at his home.
He was born September 16, 1961 in Manistique and attended the Manistique Area Schools. He spent the greater part of his life in Manistique, moving to Prudenville two years ago.
Kem was employed in the forest products industry and was very involved in traditional Native American crafts and activities.
He is survived by a son, George LaVance of Manistique; parents, Sam and Marg Warren of Manistique; maternal grandmother, Vera Udell of Manistique; two brothers, Kris (Karen) Glidden of Ogden, UT and Billy (Tonya) Chandanais of Prudenville, MI; two sisters, Kelley Whitefeather and Karri Truitt of Manistique; stepbrother, Samuel Warren of Lake Placid, FL; stepsister, Sandrea (Mike) Brazee of Wilmington, NC; two heart-adopted sisters, Tammy Wilkes Vincent and Kimberly Wilkes Smith of Manistique and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique from 4:00pm until 6:00pm on Monday, August 20, 2001. Funeral services will follow at 6:00pm with Speaker for the People Don Jenerou officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
Arthur W. Kannisto
RUMELY -- Arthur W. Kannisto, age 86, of Farmington Hills and formerly of Rumely, died on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 in West Bloomfield, Michigan. He was born on June 11, 1915 in Gwinn, Michigan to the late Charles and Fannie (Pajunen) Kannisto. Arthur grew up in Rumely and graduated from Eben High School. He married his wife, Sylvia Wirkkunen in 1942. Art retired from General Motors as a Tool & Die tradesman. He also sold firewood while he was working and during his retirement. Art was active in the Finnish Center in Farmington Hills and he sang in the Finlandia Male Chorus. He loved to sing and traveled with the chorus to Finland and other places.
He is survived by his wife of over 59 years, Sylvia Kannisto of Farmington Hills; their children- Rodney (Cara) Kannisto of Brighton, MI; Renee (Tim) Romps of Gibsonia, PA, Susan (Phil) Bauer of Onsted, MI, Charles Kannisto of Columbia, SC, and Mark Kannisto of Royal Oak, MI; 7 grandchildren- Michael, Jennifer, Dennis, David, Eric, Patrick, and Kala; 2 great grandchildren- Max and Taylor; sisters- Betty Salo of Eben, Ruth Joki of Negaunee, and Helen Keto of Negauee; nephew- Bob Ollila of Eben; and nine other nieces and nephews. Art was also preceded in death by a sister, Vera Kannisto and two infant brothers.

Bernice (Carlson) Davenport
GARNER, NORTH CAROLINA -- Bernice (Carlson) Davenport, died Thursday, August 16, 2001 in Garner, North Carolina.
Bernice was born on July 2, 1919 in Ishpeming to Anna and Edward Carlson. She grew up in Ishpeming and graduated from the Ishpeming High School. On October 18, 1947 Bernice married Lloyd Davenport. The couple lived in Milwaukee and later moved to Garner, North Carolina. The Davenports had two sons, Scott and Kurt. Bernice died in Garner after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She is survived by her husband Lloyd Davenport, two sons, Scott and Kurt, one grandson John and her sister Edna Engstrom of Ishpeming.
Joseph Rousseau, Jr.
AUTRAIN -- Joseph Rousseau, Jr., age 82, of N7628 Arbutus, AuTrain, died on Monday, August 13, 2001 at 12:00 p.m. at his home.
He was born in Munising, Michigan on January 29, 1919 to the late Joseph and Mary (Schilling) Rousseau. Joe graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School and Wm. G. Mather High School in 1938. On March 23, 1941, he married Alice M. Bovan. He entered the U.S. Army and later joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in Hondo, Texas. He was accepted at Randolph Field, Texas where he spent the next several years until he was discharged in 1945. After returning home, he graduated from Northern Michigan University with honors in 1949. He taught History, Government, and Economics at Wm. G. Mather High School in Munising from 1949 until 1951. He also coached football, basketball, and track there. In 1951, he accepted a position in Newberry, teaching and coaching there. In 1952, he accepted a position in Lansing with the Board of Education, teaching at Pattengill Junior High School. During that time, he earned his Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. He then became the principal at Sexton High School and the first principal at Harry Hill High School in Lansing. He later accepted a position as Director of Special Services with the Board of Education, retiring from there in 1982 when he and Alice returned home to AuTrain. Joe was a member of St. Therese Catholic Mission in AuTrain, the Pictured Rocks Golf & Country Club, and the American Legion Post #131. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, being outdoors, reading and poetry. Joe loved his home and community in AuTrain.
He is survived by his wife of over sixty years, Alice, of AuTrain; their children- Michael (Vicki) Rousseau of Mason, MI, James (Pamela) Rousseau of Webster, NY, Josette (John) Tanner of Ovid, MI, Teresa Rousseau of Sonoma, CA, David (Tammie) Rousseau of Bath, MI, and Mary Jo (Kyle) Abronowitz of Haslett, MI; 11 grandchildren- Stephen, Michelle, Richard, Nicole, Jodi, Patrick, Melissa, Andy, Arianna, Terra, & Breaunna; 7 great grandchildren- Chelsey, Jared, Zachary, Taylor, Matthew, James Allen, & Danielle; sister- Mary Lou Rousseau of Wisconsin; brothers & sisters-in-law- John "Jack" Rousseau of Munising, Robert "Douse" & Betty Rousseau of Munising, Vivian Rousseau of Munising & Pricilla Rousseau of Escanaba; brother-in-law- Earl Daniels of Munising; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, a sister, Patricia Daniels, and two brothers, William and Vernon Rousseau, preceded Joe in death.

Marie T. (Piirto) Frye
ANN ARBOR -- Marie T. (Piirto) Frye, 93, a former Ishpeming resident, died on Monday, August 13, 2001 at the White Hall Nursing Home in Ann Arbor. Mrs. Frye was born May 8, 1908 in Ishpeming to Herman and Hedvig Sofia (Vahakorpi) Piirto and attended Ishpeming High School. She was an Ann Arbor resident since 1935 where she owned and operated a beauty salon for 56 years.
She is survived by a brother, Ernest Piirto, Negaunee and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Everett Frye in 1991, brothers George, Martin, Clifford, Wilbert, and Dr. J.A. Piirto, sisters, Siiri Truckey, Linnea Waara, Helmi Neeley, Mae Spencer and Martha Tomola.
A private memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. C. Bruce Ulstad, pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church will officiate. Interment will be in Northland Chapel Gardens. There will be no visitation.
Arthur Rivers
SKANDIA -- Arthur Rivers, 92, of 133 Abrahams Road, Skandia, died Saturday, August 18, 2001 at his home.
He was born in Negaunee on September 22, 1908 to the late John and Seraphina Rivers. He worked on the railroad and retired from Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. in 1970. Arthur enjoyed gardening and family get-togethers. He lived in Skandia for the past 30 years and was a former member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Palmer where he also lived at one time.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Elsie (Salminen) Rivers; one son, Arthur (Helen) Rivers of Gainesville, FL; three daughters, Norma (Art) Romo of Skandia, Elsie (Peter) Suardini of Negaunee and Yvonne (Douglas) Savala of Charlotte, MI; one sister, Tyyne Tollefson of Marquette; 9 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha (Manty) Rivers; his parents; 5 brothers; and 7 sisters.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 20, 2001 at 2:00pm at the Perala Funeral Home in Negaunee with Rev. Ardy Johnson officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 1:00pm until the time of services. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens.
Frank L. Green, Sr.
NEWBERRY -- Frank L. Green, Sr., 91, of Newberry, died Friday afternoon, August 17, 2001 at the Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born January 16, 1910 in Chatham, Ontario, Canada, Frank moved to the state of Missouri with his family in 1915. In 1920 he moved to Michigan where he met and married the former Zona Belle Stamper on March 31, 1935 in Curtis. He became a United States Citizen in 1940 and lived most of his life in Newberry. He worked in the woods and saw mills until he became employed in 1955 at the Newberry Regional Medical Center and retired as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1972. Frank was a past member of the B.P.O.E. #1705, the Oddfellows and the Tahquamenon Sportsman's Club. He loved to play cribbage and was a member of the Newberry Cribbage League. Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing, crossword puzzles, garage sales and tinkering in his garage.
Frank is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Zona Belle Green on July 1, 2001; son Frank L. Green, Jr. in 1976; brothers Frank A., Lyle and Hillard; sisters Beulah Sheppard, Mary Ambrose and Ellen Johnson. Survivors include his four daughters, Sharon (Al) Lamaire of Newberry, Sandra Richardson of Newberry, Elizabeth (Tom) Daniel of Battle Creek and Mary (Jeff) Heller of Allegan; 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and brother Fred Green of Dansville.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 20, 2001 at 11:00am at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Rev. Jane Logston officiating. Inurnment will take place at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, August 19 from 5:00-8:00pm and also on Monday, August 20 from 10:00am until time of services.

Harry J. "Bing" Maxwell
ISHPEMING -- Harry J. "Bing" Maxwell, age 83, of 1219 Alpine Circle, Green Valley, AZ and longtime Ishpeming resident, passed away Friday, August 17, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit.
Bing was born May 4, 1918 in Jackson, MI to the late Harry and Mary (Webber) Maxwell. He worked for the C.C.I. Co. as an electrician at the Pioneer Ore Improvement Plant for over 15 years, retiring in 1979. In post retirement years, he and his wife managed Snowberry Heights in Marquette and were the owners of book stores in Ishpeming and Marquette, MI, Green Bay, WI and Green Valley, AZ.
Bing spent his winters in Green Valley, AZ since 1993, where he was a member of the Desert Hills Lutheran Church and was a former member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. He was a well known local jazz musician and loved to fish and play golf.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Corrine of Green Valley, AZ; 2 sons, Tom (Pat) Maxwell of Traverse City, MI and Peter (Susan) Maxwell of Wausau, WI; 2 daughters, Mary Jo (Tom) Connors of Ishpeming and Kathleen Latta of Skandia; 6 grandchildren, Michelle (Kevin) Fitzpatrick of Oshkosh, WI, Christy Connors of Ishpeming, Abby Connors of Appleton, WI, Sarah Connors of Grand Rapids, MI and Michael and Nellie Latta, both of Skandia; his mother-in-law, Mayme Anderson of Negaunee; 2 step-grandchildren, Erica and David Restum along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Patrick Maxwell, a sister and three brothers.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, August 20, 2001 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Inurnment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 10:00am until the time of services on Monday at the church.

Reynold S. Kjellman
ISHPEMING -- Reynold S. Kjellman, age 63, of 321 Main St., died Wednesday, August 1, 2001 at his home in Ishpeming.
Reynold was born September 15, 1937 in Ishpeming to the late Gordon and Ethel (Arseneau) Kjellman. He was a graduate of the National Mine High School. He worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for A. Lindberg & Sons Co. of Ishpeming. He was a lifelong area resident and former member of the Negaunee Chess Club.
Survivors are 1 son Eric Kjellman of San Jose, CA; 2 brothers, Richard (Betty) Kjellman and Michael (Sheila) Kjellman Sr., both of Ishpeming; 2 sisters, Marcia (Wallace) Peterson of Coldwater, MI and Paulette (Marvin) Lynn Jr. of Ishpeming; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by 1 brother, John O. Kjellman, in February of 2000.

Shirley M. Stoll
GREEN BAY, WI - Shirley M. Stoll, 76, Green Bay, died on Friday, August 17, 2001 at a local Green Bay hospital. Shirley was born on August 11, 1925 in Marquette, MI to the late Raymond A. and Fannie (Halso) Vonck. On August 10, 1946 she married John Stoll in Marquette. Shirley retired from the Brown County Mental Health Department in 1987.
She is survived by her husband John R.; two sons, John R. (Pamela) Stoll, Ledgeview and Richard "Rick" Stoll (Kathryn Erdmann), Green Bay; two daughters, Debra Ann (James) Johnson, Madison and Patricia Marie (Paul M.) Timmerman, Green Bay; nine grandchildren, Arrington Lee Stoll, John R. "Jack" Stoll, Aaron James Johnson, Nicole Lynn Johnson, Elyse Deann Johnson, Danielle Marie Stoll, Robert Charles Stoll, Emily Marie Timmerman and Jennifer Lynn Timmerman; one brother, Raymond L. (Ann) Vonck, Marquette, MI. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Donald C. Brugman
MARQUETTE -- Donald Clarence Brugman, 68, of 693 Lost Creek Drive, Marquette, and former Harvey resident, entered eternal life on Saturday afternoon, August 18, 2001, following a lengthy illness. Don was born April 28, 1933 in Marquette, a son of the late Louis and Marguerite (Anderson) Brugman. He was raised in Elcho, Wisconsin by his dear Aunt, Marie Marckx. He graduated from the Bishop Baraga High School in 1951 and later served in the US Army as a Corporal in the military police division in Germany during the Korean War. He worked as a truck driver for REA Express and Clairmont Trucking for many years, and as a maintenance supervisor for Norlite Nursing Center. Donald was an avid fisherman, hunter, and loved baking. Survivors include: two sons, David P. (Marianne) Brugman and Donald J. (Susan Larsen) Brugman both of Marquette; four daughters, Dawn L. (Mike) Hiironen and Shari L. Brugman both of Marquette, Diane Guzman of Alaska, and Kirsten Brugman of Hawaii; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his
very dear friend, Nancy Mathews of Marquette. Don was preceded in death by his father Louis Brugman in 1977 and by his mother Marguerite M. Davison in 1999. At Don's request, no public services will be scheduled. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
