Earl L. Barber
NEWBERRY -- Earl L. Barber, 71, of Newberry, died Sunday morning August 19, 2001 at his residence under the loving care of his family and L.M.A.S. Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 22, 2001 at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry with Pastor Jack Kolbe officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday August 22nd from 9:00 am until time of services. Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.
Everett E. "Pete" Schwemin
MARQUETTE -- Everett E. "Pete" Schwemin, 75, of 407 Blemhuber Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday afternoon August 19, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital following a lengthy illness. He had been hospitalized for the past three weeks. Arrangements will be announced by the Fassbender Funeral Home.
Florence N. Hansen
ISHPEMING -- Florence N. Hansen, age 82, formerly of 814 E. Empire St., Ishpeming passed away on Friday August 17, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center where she had resided since October of 1998.
Florence was born March 26, 1919 in Ishpeming to the late William and Margaret (Northy) Jenkin. She resided in this area for most of her life and for a brief time in Escanaba.
Survivors include her son John Hansen of Ishpeming; 2 grandchildren - Billy (Yvonne) Hansen of Negaunee and Jimmy Hansen of Champion; a daughter in law - Sandy Hansen of Champion and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John C.
Hansen in 1989 and a son George Hansen in 1999.
Memorial services will be held at 11 :00 AM on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Kordish to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 10AM until the time of services on Wednesday.
John "Jack" Joseph Gollinger
MUNISING -- John "Jack" Joseph Gollinger, age 69, of 502 W. Superior Street, Munising, died on Sunday, August 19, 2001 at 6:45 a.m. at the Marquette General Hospital. Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Post #131 in Munising. Complete arrangements will be announced by the Boweram Funeral Home.
Peter W. Swanson
CHESANING, Ml - At 2:30 AM on Thursday, August 16, 2001, after a valiant 8 year battle with cancer, Peter William Swanson, 60, formerly of Michigamme, Michigan on October 22, 1940 to the late John E. and Aili (Jalava) Swanson. Pete graduated from Michigamme High School in 1958 as Valedictorian of his class. He graduated from Northern Michigan a son of the late Bruno and Aileen (Kipina) Kaurala. He attended the John A. Doelle School.
Doug was employed by the Cuda Corporation of Hancock. He also worked on the family farm, the Merchant Marine and Tangen Manufacturing of Baraga as well as being an Electrolux sales representative for several years. Doug attended both the Tapiola and Painesdale Apostolic Lutheran Churches.
Surviving are two brothers, Earl B. (Helen) Kaurala and Paul (Jean) Kaurala both of Marquette and Tapiola, Michigan and Scottsdale, Michigan, and Michael Kaurala of Marquette, MI. Four nieces, Lisa (Robert) Tervonen of Ironwood, Michigan. One Grandniece and Grandnephew, Emma and Erik Tervonen of Ironwood. Two aunts, Gertrude (Albert) Branstrom of Livonia, Michigan. One uncle, Ernest (Miriam) Kipina of Superior Location, and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at the Tapiola Apostolic Lutheran Church with Doug's brother Dr. Earl B. Kaurala to officiate. Burial will be in the Elo Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, Illinois.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dorothy Brawley of Humboldt; 2 daughters- Nancy (Gordon) Neumiller of Mercer Island, WA and Mary Lou (Bob) Davis of Vernon Hills, IL; a son Robert Brawley of Chicago, IL; a sister Margie Woll of Grays Lake, IL; 3 grandchildren; a great grandson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters.
A private inurnment service will be held at Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee Twp. with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate.

John "Jack" Joseph Gollinger
MUNISING -- John "Jack" Joseph Gollinger, age 69, of 502 W. SuperiorStreet, Munising, died on Sunday, August 19, 2001 at 6:45a.m. at Marquette General Hospital. He was born on July 23, 1932 to the late Stanley and Clara (Raymond) Gollinger in Munising and was a lifetime resident. Jack attended Sacred Heart School through the eighth grade and graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1951. Jack was a Korean War veteran, joining the U.S. Navy on January 3, 1952. He trained at the Great Lakes Naval Academy and then on at thirteen month tour in the Aleutian Islands. Jack then went to pipe fitter school in San Diego and served in the Seventh Fleet in the Far East aboard the Destroyer Tender, U.S.S. Hamul, A.D. 20. He was discharged out of the service in December of 1955. On June 9, 1956, Jack married his high school sweetheart, Lola L. Pangborn. In March of 1956, he had begun his employment with Kimberly Clark as an apprentice pipe fitter in the Maintenance Department. He was promoted to Pipe Fitter in 1959 and Jack earned his Master Plumbing License for Kimberly Clark in 1972. Jack served on the Apprenticeship Committee at the mill, and he retired from the Engineering Department in 1990 after 34 1/2 years of service. Following retirement, Jack and Lola spent seven winters in Panama City Beach. NC, Jackie (Jonathon) Wisconsin to the late William and Selma (Altonen) Maki. Walter graduated from the Tripoli High School in 1934. Walter rode the rails to and from North Dakota to work in the wheat fields in 1937 and 1938, and from the late 1930's to the mid 1950's he worked in the woods logging. He married Helen Marian Pokela on September 5, l943. Walter and Helen owned their family dairy farm for thirty-five years, before they retired in 1977. Walter was very involved with the community. He was a member for fifty years of the Chatham Lions Club, where he also had served as President. He served as a Board member of the Alger County Road Commission, the Alger County Social Service Board, the Alger/Marquette FHA (Farm Home Administration), the Midland (Co-op) Federation Board, the MMPA (Michigan Artificial Breeder's Co-op), the Dairy Heard Improvement Association, the Alger County Fair Board (where he served as secretary and treasurere) and he was an original member on the Alger County Soil Conservation Board. Walter was also a current member of the Board of Review in Chatham.
Walter was a strong and faithful supporter of the Eben Eagles and the Superior Central Cougars. There were not many track meets, cross country races, or basketball games that Walter did not attend. He had not only been involved with his own children's
activities, but he continued to stay active and involved lives of children of the community. He had been the Eben Little League Baseball Coach from 1958 until 1973. Walter's teams earned many trophies and he always treated them to an end of the season trip to Milwaukee to see a Brewer's game and the zoo. In 1968, he helped break ground at the Chatham Ski Hill and had continued to stay involved with the hill until the present time. He and Helen taught many kids in the area how to ski and they were always willing to give kids a ride to and from if they needed one Walter was honored because he was still skiing after the age of eighty in 1998 by being inducted in the National Ski Hall of Fame in Ishpeming. Walter and Helen enjoyed playing card games with
friends and he was an avid reader, hunter, fisherman, and downhill and cross country skier. He enjoyed dancing whether it was a Polka or Rock and Roll, flower and vegetable gardening, bowling on the Chatham League, carpentry (building barns, furniture, and cabinets.)
He is survived by his wife of over fifty-seven years, Helen; their three daughters - Kathy Kolpack, Judy (Curt) Gerken, and Della (Bruce) Davey; their three sons - Dan (Kathy) Maki, Bill (Robin) Maki, and Randy (Lynne) Maki; 16 grandchildren- Duane, Dale, Kim, Holly, Nichole, Jason, Brandi, Daniel, Elizabeth, Kyle, Brittany, Trevor, Cody, Ryan, Lukas, and Nicholas; 7 great-grandchildren - Fahren, Brenden, Emma, Matthew, Joshua, Ashley, and Stan; two sisters - Senia Henderson and Sylvia (Paul) Wollemann; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Walter was also preceded in death by two brothers, George and Richard Maki.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. Chaplain Gerald Riley will conduct the funeral service from the Bowerman Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham. Walter will be escorted by Duane and Dale Kolpack, Jason, Ryan, and Kyle Maki, Daniel Gerken, Mike Rondeau, and Steven Schreiber.
Walter's family would like to give special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the cardiac unit Marquette General Hospital for their compassionate care given to Walter.
Hazel Sundeen
MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- Hazel Sundeen, age 90, former Ishpeming and Michigamme resident died Tuesday, August 21, 2001 in Minneapolis, MN.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Stanley W. Sundeen, former geologist and Director of Research and Development for Cleveland-Cliffs. She is survived by a son Paul (Jackie) Sundeen; daughter Karen Sundeen; grandson Steven (Kelly); granddaughter Kristen Sundeen; and one brother and sister.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, 2001 at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Arrangements are being handled by Strobeck- Johnson Funeral Chapel, Hopkins, MN, (952) 938-9020.
Lowell M. Koepp
MARQUETTE -- Lowell M. Koepp, 75, of 405 County Rd. 480, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient the past two weeks.
He was born June 14, 1926 in Harvey to Otto and Augusta (Gentz) Koepp and had lived in this area all his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was employed as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years. He also worked in the heating plant at K.I. Sawyer AFB. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, American Legion Jopling Post 44, and the Pasty Crew Old Car Society.
Lowell is survived by two daughters, Cynthia (Raymond) Peano of Skandia and Candace (Jeffrey) Romy of Asheboro, Mississippi, a son of James Robert and Phyllis Marie (Larson) Hereford. He was raised in Michigan in the late 1960's. He was employed by the Calumet and Hecla and also White Pine Mining companies, working as both a seaman on the ore boats and an an underground copper miner. Survivors include: his mother, Phyllis M. Hereford of West Ishpeming; two sisters, Linda (William) Yowell of Prescott, AZ and Charlyne Devero of Fort Worth, Michigan, where she had been a patient since May of 2001.
She was born on July 24, 1912 in Antigo, WI, a daughter of the late James and Theresa (Zimmerman) Steber. She attended school in Antigo and was a 1930 graduate of the Antigo High School. In 1945, she was married to Otto Dickow and he preceded her in death in 1979. Evelyn was employed as a cook at the former Richies Restaurant in Twin Lakes. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church of South Range.
Surviving are 3 sons, James (Joan) Steber of White Pine, Todd (Holly) Dickow of Ontonogon and Donald "Otto Jr." (Jane) Dickow of White Pine; 4 daughters, Jean (John) Korich of Bergland, Susan (Kenneth) Pasanen of White Pine, Margaret (Martin) Pintar of White Pine and Dawn (William) Podnar of Ishpeming; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; 1 sister, Germaine Christiansen of Antigo, WI; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
As requested by Evelyn, there will be no visitation. Cremation will take place and a memorial mass will be celebrated at 11am on Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at St. Jude's Catholic Church in White Pine with Fr. Mike Woempner to officiate. Inurnment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range. Arrangements are being handled by the Mountain View Mortuary of South Range, Antila Funeral Service, Inc.
Mrs. Liên Sâm Lê
MARQUETTE -- Mrs. Liên Sâm Lê, formerly a resident of Marquette, died on Wednesday, August 22, at 5:50 A.M at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Mrs. Lê, her husband the late Professor Vien Van Lê and their family lived in Marquette, where he taught at Northern Michigan.
Mrs. Lê was born Pham Thi Lien on March 16, 1927 in Hanoi, Vietnam to Pham Van Ky and Nguyen Thi Thuong.
The Lê's lived in Vietnam, West Germany, and finally immigrated to the United States.
Mrs. Lê lived a life of simplicity. Her strong faith and trust in God sustained her throughout her life and gave her a sharp discernment and a special wisdom. She shared her generous spirit, abundant love and kindness, and abiding friendship with everyone she knew.
Mrs. Lê is survived by her siblings and their families, Pham Van Hai, of Miami Beach, Pham Thi Nhung, of Hanoi, Pham Van Kien, of Hanoi, Hoang Emily Pham Nguyen, of Stockton, Illinois, Anh Tuan Lê, of San Francisco, Anh Lê, of San Francisco, Kim Lê Tran, of San Diego, and Lien Huong Lê Tran, of Aurora, Illinois on August 25. A funeral service will also be held in Marquette on August 27, with Dr. Rex A. McConnell, former pastor of the Marquette Missionary Church officiating. Mrs. Lê will be buried at Park Cemetary, at her husband's gravesite.
Arrrangements are being handled by Swanson Lundquist Funeral Home.
David Henry Stortz
ROCKLAND, MAINE -- David Henry Stortz, 41 of Rockland, Michigan, a son of Clarence and Yvonne Stortz of Marquette. He attended John D. Pierce and Marquette Area Public Schools.
David served 4 years with the U.S. Navy as an electrical technician. His love of the sea drew him to the East Coast permitting him to become a superb diver and commercial fisherman.
Surviving besides his parents are his children Nichole Jean and Victoria Catherine Stortz of Illinois and Carey of Marquette, sisters; Lisa of Michigan as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
His long time friend and companion Lisa Albee preceded David in death in 1999.
Memorials can be made to the Marquette Community Foundation, where a fund will be established for young people with an interest in the seafaring community.
A memorial site is located in the Powell Township Cemetery in Big Bay.
