Sheldon (Shelly) Beaudry
WETMORE/LOST LAKE -- Sheldon (Shelly) Beaudry, age 58, of E8868 South Lost Lake, Wetmore, died on Friday, August 24, 2001 at 2:10am at Marquette General Hospital. He was born on June 17, 1943 to the late Floyd and Tynne (Latavala) Beaudry in Munising. Shelly attended Sacred Heart School through the eighth grade and graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1964. He moved to Lake Orion, MI shortly after graduation and began employment with General Motors Foundry. Following retirement with 30 years of service, Shelly moved back to the Munising area at Lost Lake. He worked with his sister and brother-in-law at the Buckhorn for the past 11 years. Shelly loved NASCAR racing and considered himself the #1 fan of Jeff Gordon. He enjoyed archery and loved his Chihuahua "Punks".
He is survived by 3 children, Bobbi Lynn Beaudry (Curt) Young of Farmington Hills, MI, Tammy Jean (Mike) Boyer of Waterford, MI and Tim (Teresa) Beaudry of Lake Orion, MI; 9 grandchildren, Krista, Rian, Kelsie, Amanda, Kim, Ethan, Eric, Erin and Brooke; a brother, Melvin Beaudry of Milwaukee, WI; four sisters, Beverly (Bob) Cotter, Janice (Terry) Nolan and Lynn (Richard) Beckwith, all of the Munising area and Kristin (Jeff) Kouri of Colorado Springs, CO; also numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday, August 26th from 5:00 to 8:00pm. Father Dennis L. Borca, Pastor of Sacred Heart will conduct a Funeral Service at the Bowerman Funeral Chapel on Monday, August 27, 2001 at 10:00am in Munising. Interment will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
Battista J. 'Bacco' Armatti
GWINN -- Battista J. 'Bacco' Armatti, 82, of 207 N. Low St., Gwinn died at 7:15 AM on Saturday, August 25, at Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he had been a patient for 3 years. Battista was born March 18, 1919 in Gwinn to Jerome & Mary (Roberto) Armatti, and was a life long resident. He was employed as a bus driver for the Gwinn Area Public Schools and served two terms on the Gwinn Board of Education. In his spare time he kept the grounds at St. Anthony's Catholic Church and liked working in the woods. Battista was a past member of the Gwinn Knights of Columbus and enjoyed submitting editorials to the the Mining Journal.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Edith (Storti) Armatti, 5 sons; Jerry Armatti, Neil (Patti) Armatti, Patrick (Jean) Armatti, Daniel Armatti, and James (Tara) Armatti all of Gwinn, 2 daughters; Patricia 'Tisha' (Georg) Keefer, and Vicki (George) Sibley, both of Gwinn, 1 brother, John Armatti, Gwinn, 3 sisters; Lena King, Rose Storti, and Edith Doyen, all of Gwinn, 13 grandchildren, 9 great- grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers; James and Lawrence Armatti, and 1 sister; Mary Michaud.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Rev. David Sedlock and Rev. Thomas Schmede will officate and intermenty will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. The Koskey Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Helmuth (Hal) H. Huber
LINDEN, MI -- Helmuth (Hal) H. Huber, age 78, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2001 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born August 12, 1923 in Ulm, Germany, and grew up in Marquette. He resided in Flint and Linden most of his life. He married Helen Kuzawa on September 25, 1943. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the European Campaign. He was a member of VFW Post #03243, and was a founding member of the Jogging Club at Southwestern Academy.
Mr. Huber was employed as Detective Sergeant for the City of Flint Police Department, retiring in 1974. He was one of the first 2 original Flint Police Department Frogmen. He was a member of F.O.P. and also worked for the Juvenile Bureau and as Liaison Officer for Longfellow Junior High. Surviving are his wife, Helen, children Jeffrey (Marlene) of Durand, Jerry (Dorie) of Gaines and David of Charleston, West Virginia, 4 grandchildren, Chad, Cathy, Stephen and Laura, 3 sisters Lisa Huber of Lansing, Beth Huber of North Carolina, Trudy and husband Bill Fountain of North Carolina, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters.
Funeral services will be held 11:00a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at St. Paul Lutheran Church 402 South Ballenger Highway, Flint, with Pastor Roger Kilponen officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, 2-4PM and 6-8PM at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. Mr. Huber will be at the church from 10AM Wednesday until the time of service. Burial will be Fort Custer Cemetery in Battle Creek, MI. Those desiring may make contributions to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

L'ANSE -- Lucille K. Ozanich, age 90 of L'Anse, passed away Saturday, August 25 at Shulstad's Leisure Living in Baraga. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Monday, from 6-8:00p.m., and Tuesday one hour prior to the service. Rev. Oscar F. Bergquist
ISHPEMING -- Oscar F. Bergquist, age 98, formerly of 111 Bluff St. in Ishpeming passed away on Sunday August 26, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp. where he had resided for the past year and a half.
Oscar was born June 21, 1903 in Negaunee the son of Fredrick & Ellen (Erickson) Bergquist. He worked as a woods worker for over 26 years and then as an electrician after his woods working days. He was a member of the United Evangelical Covenant Church in Ishpeming. Surviving Oscar is a niece Ann Clement of Marquette. He was preceded in death by a brother Frederick Bergquist and 2 sisters Elsie Whitler and Ruth Bergquist. A graveside service will be held at 10:00AM on Tuesday August 28, 2001 at the Berquist Family Lot in the Ishpeming Cemetery with the Rev. Terry Cathcart to officiate. BARAGA -- Virginia K. Turala, age 80, of Baraga passed away on Sunday, August 26, 2001at Baraga County Memorial Hospital skilled nurse unit.

Virginia Langlois
NEGUUNEE -- Virginia Langlois, age 89, of 114 S. Brown Ave., Negaunee, died at 12:45 AM on Sunday, August 26, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center, where she had been a patient for 8 weeks.
Mrs. Langlois was born August 22, 1912 in Negaunee to longtime Negaunee City Band Director Joseph "Pop" Violetta and Annetta (Gabrille) Violetta, was a graduate of Neguanee High School Class of 1930 and was a life long resident. She attended Northern Michigan University where she earned her permanent teaching certificate in 1932. She married Howard Langlois in 1936 and did substitute teaching until her sons were grown. She returned to N.M.U. in the 1960's and earned a Bachelors of Science degree in education. She taught 4th grade for the Negaunee Public Schools at Lakeview Elementary School, a position she loved, until her retirement in the 1970's.
Virginia was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee. She was a former member of the Lady Druid Lodge, the Negaunee Lady Elks and the M.A.R.S.P. She enjoyed family, friends & travel and will be missed by those who loved her.
Surviving are 2 sons; Gene Langlois, Negaunee, Robert (Claudette) Langlois, Birmingham, AL, 2 grandsons; Marc Langlois, Birmingham, AL, Brian Langlois, Tuscaloosa, AL, 1 brother, John Violetta, and 1 sister, Josie Richards, both of Negaunee, numerous nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard in 1988, 3 brothers; Sylvio "Vic", Secondo & Adolph Violetta, and a sister, Katherine Ennett.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Lawrence Gauthier officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 12:00 noon until the time of services at 2:00 PM on Wednesday.
Adam "Albert" Weldum
ROCK -- Adam "Albert" Weldum, age 93 of Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming (formerly of 4379 Trombly 35th Road, Rock, MI), died August 8, 2001 at the Marquette Medical Care Facility.
Albert was born April 7, 1908 near Gleason, WI, the son of the late Christ and Eva (Jeskewitz) Weldum. He married the former Selma Sarring on May 2, 1934 and they made their residence in Rock. Albert worked cutting timber and owned his own sawmill. He enjoyed farming and in later years woodworking.
He was a former member of the Rock Sportsman Club, the Rock Senior Citizens Center and a Charter Member of the Rock Lions Club since 1943. He and his wife Selma served as the Lions Club Grand Marshal in the 2000 Rock Labor Day Parade.
In addition to his wife Selma, survivors include, 2 sons; Ronald Paul (Janet) Weldum of Stockton, CA and Theodore Albert (Mary) Weldum of Negaunee, MI, 1 daughter, Nancy Weldum of Phoenix, AZ,, 2 sisters; Ann (Al) Will of Merrill, WI and Ameilia Grauden of Owen, WI, 5 grandchildren; Bruce, Theodore, David, Sheila and Alexander, 2 great-grandchildren; Stephen and Wyatt, 2 nephews, and 1 niece.
In addition to his parents Albert was preceded in death by a grandson Larry Weldum.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 31, 2001 at 11:00 A.M. at the Rock Senior Citizen Center in Rock with Michael Lepisto officiating. Luncheon will follow at the Rock Senior Citizen. Burial will be in the Rock Cemetery. Ellen A. Lehto
AURA -- Ellen A. Lehto, age 86, of Aura passed away Monday, August 27, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
Ellen was born February 13, 1915 in Aura, daughter of Andrew and Sofia (Dahlgren) Lehto. She attended school in Aura and L'Anse, and received a two-year degree in teaching from Northern State Teacher's College in Marquette. Ellen lived in the Detroit area for 35 years. she worked as a secretary at Eloise General Hospital in Wayne County and retired in 1968. In 1970 she moved back to Aura.
She was active in the Aura Lutheran Church, Aura Hospital Auxiliary, and the Aura Fire Dept. Auxiliary.
Ellen is survived by a step-sister Irene (Calvin) Johnson of L'Anse, several nieces and nephews. she is preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Bruno, Eino, John, Walter and Hugo Lehto, and a sister, Elsie Collins.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 31 at 3:00 p.m. at Aura Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Margaret Grant will officiate. Burial will be in the Aura Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
Florence L. Dollar Fassbender
MARQUETTE Florence L. Dollar Fassbender, 91, of 3072 US Highway 41 West, Marquette, entered eternal life Sunday evening, August 26, 2001, at her home following a two month illness. A lifelong Marquette resident, she was born September 6, 1909 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Timothy and Amauda (Bastien) Bolduc. Florence attended St. John's School, where classes and lessons were taught in French, and later was a member of the first graduating class of the Graveraet High School. On March 31, 1928 she married William Owen Dollar and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family, which eventually included seven children.
On January 3, 1953 her husband died as the result of a work-related accident and Florence later went to work as a cook at the former Nester and St. John's schools. She married Walter C. "Wally" Fassbender on April 19, 1958. The couple was active in the affairs of their parish, St. Christopher Catholic Church, and for many years Florence assisted her husband in the work of the St. Vincent dePaul Society. On February 14, 1995 Wally preceded her in death. Florence was also a member of St. Christopher Church's Altar Society and the Fourth Degree Ladies of the Assembly Knights of Columbus. Earlier this year, in recognition of her volunteer services and honoring her as the oldest living member of the parish, she received a plaque of appreciation from St. Christopher Church in grateful appreciation for her outstanding service and devotion to the parish. It was an honor she treasured. Florence was a kind and loving person who cared deeply for her family, parish family, and friends.
Whether she was playing a game of cribbage, pinochle, or going on an excursion to the casino, Florence was always anxious to meet people and give them the benefit of her bountiful smile, a certain hug, or, if needed, a kiss on the cheek. To those who knew her, the lady who loved angels, truly was one. A loving mother and devoted grandparent, she is survived by: her daughter, Shirley (Richard) Handrahan of Marquette; five sons, Ronald (Betsy) Dollar and Wesley (Lucille) Dollar both of Marquette, Loyola (Jacqueline) Dollar of Tucson, AZ, Jude Dollar of Negaunee, and Dale Dollar of Long Beach, CA; a step-daughter, Joan Blondeau of Marquette; two step-sons, Walter (Jean) Fassbender of Big Bay and Daniel (Cynthia) Fassbender of Marquette; twenty-three grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents; husbands, William and Walter; Florence was preceded in death by a son, Lowell Dollar; three grandchildren, Ronelle Dollar, Ralph Dollar, and Patricia Salo; great-grandson, Chad Wilds; two sisters, Mildred Bartolocci and Irene Lemire; and a brother Timothy Bolduc.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Friday, August 31, from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening in St. Christopher Catholic Church with Rev. Katherine J. (Murray) Mroz
MOUNT MORRIS, PA Katherine J. (Murray) Mroz, age 47, died on Friday, August 24, 2001 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
Katherine was born on July 17, 1954 in Marquette the daughter of Herbert and Mary (Welcher) Murray. She was a graduate of the Champion High School and was a student at Fairmont State College. She was a person of faith and compassion who was an active member of the church all her life. She was active in Christian Education, a student of spirituality, and philosophy at the Spruce Street United Methodist Church where she was a member. She was involved in Discipleship Bible Study, and was a close friend and confidante to many who enjoyed her sincerity, warmth and willingness to be of service.
In the twenty years she lived in Morgantown, WV she touched many with her gifts of understanding and comfort as a volunteer with the Ronald MacDonald House and the Neighborhood House, and was formerly employed at Halmark in West Virginia.
Survivors include her husband Thomas Mroz of Mount Morris, PA; two sons- Andrew Mroz of Fairmont, WV and Anthony Mroz of Cincinnati, OH; her parents Herbert and Mary Murray of FL; two brothers- Gordon (Sherry) Murray and Guy (Diane) Murray both of Diorite Location; two sisters- Victoria (Charles) Ricketts of Ishpeming and Virginia (Paul) Olson of Michigamme; mother-in-law Alice Mroz of Vulcan; granddaughter Emily Mroz and grandson Andrew Facemyer along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, August 30, 2001 at the Woodland United Methodist Church in Michigamme with the Rev. Gary Stevens to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme.
Friends may call from 4:00 until 6:00 PM on Thursday at the church.

Carol E. Anderson
MAQUETTE -- Carol E. Anderson, 88, of 125 E. Park St., died Wednesday, August 29, 2001 in the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming where she had been a patient the past two weeks.
She was born February 13, 1913 in Palmer to Ben and Emily (Vickery) Leece and had lived in Marquette since 1936. She was a graduate of Palmer High School and a 1936 graduate of Northern Michigan University. Prior to retiring in 1975 she taught for the Marquette Public Schools for 25 years. Most of those years were spent at Sandy Knoll Elementary School where she taught first grade. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Presque Isle Chapter Order of Eastern Star and Michigan Retired Teachers.
Carol is survived by a daughter Judith (Gilbert) Martin of Highland Park, IL, a son Walter (Patricia) Anderson of Brookfield, WI, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward in 1997, four sisters; Mildred, Amy, Pearl and Eleanor and three brothers; Stanley, Arthur and Wesley.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, August 31, 2001 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Reverend Ross Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery with Gilbert, Kenneth and Michael Martin, and Peter and Walter Anderson acting as pallbearers. Visitation will be at the funeral home beginning at 11:30 AM on Friday.

G. Robert Seagren
ISHPEMING -- G. Robert Seagren, age 78, of 322 S. Lake St. Ishpeming passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at this home after being in ill health for the past 6 months.
Robert was born November 18, 1922 in Evanston, IL to the late Rudolph & Aldina (Nelson) Seagren. Robert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Robert was a self-employed painter & decorator for many years while living in Illinois and later worked as a machinist at the Brownstone Shop for the C.C.I. Mining Company in Ishpeming.
Robert enjoyed refinishing furniture and being in the outdoors.
Robert was a family man. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Esther (Erkkila) Seagren, 3 children; Dr. Glenn (Caroline) Seagren of Petoskey, MI, Neal (Melissa) Seagren of Cedarburg, WI and Gail (Robert) Thompson of Negaunee, 7 grandchildren: Jeremy, Chris & Shay Thompson, Brian Lee, Jordan, Aldina and Bridget Seagren, 2 great grandchildren Lindsey and Hailly Thompson, along with 4 sisters in law. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Herbert.

J. Burt Sparhawk Jr.
MARQUETTE -- J.Burt Sparhawk Jr., 72, of 246 Lakewood Lane, died Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at his home. He had previously lived in Warren and Royal Oak before moving to this area in 1990.
He was born September 13, 1928 in Tarentum, Pennsylvania to John Burt and Dorothy (Womer) Sparhawk, was a 1952 graduate of Penn State, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1988 as head of Personnel Employment for General Motors Technical Center in Warren, MI, with whom he had been employed for 36 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, a member and board member of the Marquette Rotary Club, and Past President of the Warren Rotary Club. He was active in local Special Olympics, and was involved in the McClintock Darter-Dash Recognition Committee.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Irene "Babs" Fassbender; a daughter Sally Sparhawk of Colorado Springs, CO, two sons, John Burt (Aliki) Sparhawk III of Hartland, MI and Michael Sparhawk of Marquette, a sister Ann (Robert) Mattavi of Sun City West, AZ and a granddaughter Valerie.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 1, 2001 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Reverend Mark Engle officiating. Visitation will be at St. Paul's Morgan Chapel from 6 to 8 PM on Friday. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vieno M. Roos
GWINN - Vieno M. Roos, age 90, of 1466 Knudsen Road, Gwinn, died Wednesday afternoon August 29, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center where she had been a patient for three hours.
Mrs. Roos was born in Negaunee July 3, 1911 to Jacob and Justina (Jarvi) Kujala and graduated from Negaunee High School in 1929.
She worked with her husband, Edward, for Ekman Moving Co. in Duluth, MN before moving to the Gwinn area.
Vieno was a member of the Ladies of Kaleva, Gwinn Merry Mixers, Gwinn VFW Auxiliary, and the Grace Lutheran Church. She enjoyed knitting and making afghans.
Surviving are one son; Eugene (Lorraine) Ekman of Aurora, MN, one sister; Aili Talus of Ishpeming, four grandchildren; Steven, Mark, and Lori Ekman and Susan Sowers, and twelve great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Edward Ekman in 1966, her second husband, George Roose in 1973, five brothers; Jalmer, Sulo, Toivo, Eino and Leo Kujala, and one sister; Helen Stille.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 1, 2001 at 11:00am at the Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Nancy Kauppi officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from l0:00am until the time of
services. Pallbearers will be Steven and Mark Ekman, Jim Sowers, and Davan Scott.
