Marilyn V. Steinhoff
MUNISING -- MariIyn V. Steinhoff, age 77, of 1550 Center Street - Apt. A 10, Munising, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at her home. She was born on September 18, 1923 in AuTrain, Michigan to the late Edmund and Ora (Carrier) Allie.
Marilyn was raised in Wetmore, she graduated from Sacred Heart School, and she attended Wm. G. Mather High School. Marilyn worked at Atlas Plywood and then the Munising War Memorial Hospital as a nurse's aide. She married William L. Steinholf on October16, 1953 in Phoenix, AZ. Bill was transferred to Kinross, A.F.B., and the family lived in Rudyard until returning to Munising in 1963. From 1963 until 1969, Marilyn went back to work at the Munising Memorial Hospital while her husband owned and operated "Bill's TV." Bill took at job with Kimberly Clark and the family moved to Neenah. WI where Marilyn continued to work as a nurse's aide at Theda-Clark Hospital and a homemaker. They returned to Munising in l981. Bill preceded her in death on May 24, 1996 after over forty-two years of marriage. Marilyn was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Munising Senior Citizens. Marilyn had also worked at the Rock Shop with her father-in-law, Earl Steinhoff, and then with Charlie and Alma Yeihey. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and she also loved to bake for other people.
She is survived by her 4 children - Jerry (Susan) Steinhoff of Wallace, MI, Craig Steinhoff of Menasha, WI, Pauline Polar of Oshkosh, WI and Tammy Johnson of Milwaukee, WI; 7 grandchildren - Karen, Jennifer, Nicole, Andrea, Renee, Amy Stephanie; 3 great -grandchildren - Samantha, BradIee, and TyIor; adopted grandchildren - Vaughn and Mitchell and their mother, Felicia; brother - Ed Allie of Munising; sisters - Edwina Knaus of Traunik, Frances Brauns of Comstock Park MI, Bernadine "Bing" Allie of Munising, Ora Diem of Minnesota, and Pat Allie of Munising, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Besides her parents and Bill, Marilyn was preceded in death by a daughter, Carole Steinholf in 1961, brothers, Gerald and Raymond, and sisters, Lauriel, Lorraine, and Genevieve.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. A parish vigil service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Father Dennis L. Borca will officiate her funeral on Saturday, September 1, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
Wilfred Waldemar "Scow" Seglund
MUNISING -- Wilfred Waldemar "Scow" Seglund, age75, a lifetime Munising resident passed away on August 30, 2001 at 12:11 a.m. at Marquette General Hospital after a forty year battle with diabetes. He had been a patient in Marquette General Hospital for six days after a fall at home. He was born on August 9, 1926 in Munising and lived there his entire life. He attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from William G. Mather High School in 1943. He began employment at the Munising Paper Company on June 21, 1944,
working as a laborer in the log yard. His employment was interrupted when Scow was inducted into the U.S. Navy on November 30. 1944. He served in the Navy with the Seabees for two years in the Pacific during WWII. After his discharge from the service on August 26, 1946, he returned to the mill and was assigned to the Finishing Room on Marvalon. In 1948, he moved to the Size Man job in the newly created Specialties Department where he progressed to Day Compounder which was the job he held at the time of his retirement from Kimberly Clark in July of 1976 with thirty-two years of service. During his tenure, he was active in the union and served as President of United Papermakers and Paperworkers, Local No. 87 which included the Kimberly Clark strike in the early 1970's. Scow was an Officer and member of Munising's American Legion Roderick F. Prato Post #131, he served as Adjutant for several years and on the Post Drill Team for several years. He was a member of the Post for over fifty years. Scow was a lifetime member of Eden Lutheran Church in Munising and he taught adult Bible class for several years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed fishing on Lake Superior and hunting for partridge and deer. He spent a lot of time with his family in these endeavors and he enjoyed the UP outdoors and his camp on AuTrain Lake.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Mae nee Henriksen Seglund, whom he married on June 9, 1949; three children including daughters, Ruth and Michael Pond of Marquette and Susan and Gene Bertram of Marquette and son, Peder Henrik Seglund of Keego Harbor, MI; eight grandchildren - Rachel R. Pond of Arlington, VA, Nathan M. Pond of Marquette, Trisha R. Pond of Walnut Creek, CA, Laural Lee Pond and Karrin Pond of Marquette, Katrina L Bertram, Colin H. Bertram, and Erin P. Bertram of Marquette; and brothers James A. Seglund of Diamond Head, Mississippi and Ragnor "Sonny" Seglund of Sacremento, CA. Scow was preceded in death by his brother, Richard O. Seglund of Munising (Lansing), his father, Wilfred J. Seglund and his mother, Edla K. Seglund. Visitation will be on Saturday, September l, 2001 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Pastors Kurt V. and Mary Beth Kovanen will officiate funeral services at Eden on the Bay Lutheran Church on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Interment will follow the church service at Maple Grove Cemetery in the Seglund family plot. The American Legion Honor Guard will conduct graveside services.
Charles Rankin Ressler
SKANDIA -- Charles Rankin Ressler, 67, of 199 Abrahams Road, Skandia, passed away Thursday evening, at Marquette General Hospital.
Mr. Ressler was born November 25, 1933, in South Lyons, Michigan, a son of the late Robert & Clara (Berry) Ressler. On June 24, 1956 he married the former Jeanette Wood in Orlando, Florida. Mr. Ressler has been a resident of Marquette County since 1972.
Charlie was employed for most of his working years as an avionics mechanic in the US Air Force before retiring and taking a job in the mining industry. In his spare time, Charlie enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette of Skandia; three children, Dave Ressler of Ypsilanti, Melissa Binns of Gwinn and Tom (Diane) Ressler of Houghton; three brothers, Sam (Iris) Ressler of South Lyons, Buster (Maxine) Ressler of Cheyboygan, Robert (Lo) Ressler of Atlanta, MI; a sister, Clara Wilson of Romulus; grandchildren, Chris & Andy Binns of Gwinn, Toni Ressler of Monterey, CA, Katie (Bill) Hirt of Rockford, MI, Brian & Dean Ressler of Houghton; and several nieces & nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gene Ressler.
A private service will be held at the family's convenience.

Ellen A. Lehto
AURA -- Ellen A. Lehto, age 86, of Aura, passed away Monday August 27, at Marquette General Hospital.
Ellen was born February 13, 1915 in Aura, daughter of Andrew and Sofia (Dahlgren) Lehto. She attended school in Aura and L'Anse and recieved a two-year degree in teaching from Northern State Teacher's College in Marquette. Ellen lived in the Detroit area for 35 years. She worked as a secretary at Eloise General Hospital in Wayne County and retired in 1968. In 1970 she moved back to Aura.
She was active in the Aura Lutheran Church, Aura Hospital Auxiliary, and the Aura Fire Dept. Auxiliary.
Ellen is survived by a step sister, Irene (Calvin) Johnson of L'Anse, several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Bruno, Eino, John, Walter and Hugo Lehto; a sister, Elsie Collins; step sisters, Teana Holso, Helen Holso and Aune Jacobson; and step brother, Eino Ahonen.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 31 at 3:00pm at the Aura Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Rev. Margaret Grant will officiate. Burial will be in the Aura Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
Frank J. Leone
ISHPEMING -- Frank J. Leone, age 90, of 213 S. Second St. Ishpeming passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital.
Frank was born April 18, 1911 in Ishpeming to the late John & Frances (Bava) Leone. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Frank worked over 40 years as a clerk- timekeeper for the City of Ishpeming, retiring in 1975.
Frank was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. Rocco/ St. Anthony Society, and was a volunteer for the Ishpeming Fire Department for several years. He was an avid fisherman and gardener.
Frank is survived by a daughter Priscilla Richards of Kansas City, MO, a son, Francis Leone of Ishpeming, a granddaughter, Johannah Richards and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marion, 5 sisters and a brother.
A Memorial Mass will celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 3, 2001 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Rev. Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating.
Inurnment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Geri Benzing
MARQUETTE -- Geri Benzing, of 440 McMillan Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Thursday evening, August 30, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where she had resided for the past three years. Geri was born in Marquette, a daughter of Finnish immigrants, Nestor and Sandra (Mattila) Holmes. The family moved to the Skandia area when Geri was in her early teens and she resided there until after her marriage to Joseph Wood Benzing on January 16, 1937 in Marquette. The couple resided in Marquette and began to establish their home and raise a family. Geri worked at the former St. Mary's Hospital, Clifton Hotel, and then worked as a caregiver for a time. She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and bird watching. Geri also loved animals and was a contributing member of the Marquette County Humane Society.
A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by: two daughters, JoAnn Benzing of Marquette and Marlene (Brian) Christianson of Phoenix, AZ; a son, Marvin (Myrna) Benzing of Matteson, IL; her grandchildren, Gwen Cleary, Merri (Steven) Burby, Gene O'Neill, Darren O'Neill, Veronica Comerford, Deborah (Dan) O'Neill, Kristine (Robert) Erickson and Catherine (Tom) Peters; great grandchildren, Erin Stamp, Sean Cleary, Calista Cleary, Jessica Erickson, Danielle Erickson, Tara Stephenson, Sarah O'Neill, Daniel O'Neill and Ashley Peters; great great grandchildren, Ariana Stamp and Jacob Stamp; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Geri was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, on February 24, 1997; two sisters, Jenny Aishe and Impi Marie Matson; and brothers Toivo, Vern, and Elmer Holmes.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Sunday, September 2, beginning at 12 noon. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Mark Engle of St. Paul's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be made in the Northland Chapel Gardens. Geri's grandchildren will serve as honorary escorts.
June M. Corey
GRAND MARAIS -- June M. Corey, 69, of Grand Marais, died Thursday afternoon August 30, 2001 at her residence under the loving care of her family and North Woods Hospice.
Born June 24, 1932 in Ely, Minnesota, daughter of the late John & Tyne (Ojala) Lampi, Mrs. Corey had been an Grand Marais resident for several years formerly residing in Garden City. A devoted housewife and homemaker, June was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Marais. June married Bernard F. Corey April 6, 1951 and he preceded her in death on December 2, 1998. She is also preceded in death by her son Bernard W. Corey in 1987.
Survivors include her son Michael (Jenny) of Fife Lake, daughters; Patricia Corey of Grand Marais and Linda Corey of Inkster, grandchildren Autum, Cassie, Samantha andJesses, brothers; Clarence and Ronald Lampi both of Ely, Minnesota.
A memorial mass will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 6:30 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Marais with Fr. Glenn Theoret officiating. Rite of Committal will take place at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery.

Paul Joseph Rose
HARVEY -- Paul Joseph Rose, 75, of 633 Cherry Creek Road, Harvey, passed away Thursday evening at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
Mr. Rose was born April 22, 1926 in Marquette, a son of the late Wilfred and Delia (DesJardins) Rose. Mr. Rose was a graduate of Northern Michigan University. On October 8, 1965 he married the former Eleanor L. Ravens in San Diego, California.
Paul was employed as a carpenter in the construction trades in California for many years.
Mr. Rose is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Harvey; his children, Staci (Jeff) Like of Little Lake, Terry (Robert) Ball of Little Lake, Cathy Robinson of San Diego, CA, Brenda (Dan) Wood of Bend, OR, Scott Garrett of Bend, OR and Carl (Delcine) Tooles of Oceanside, CA; a sister, Mary (Paul) Buchanan of San Diego, CA; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and nine siblings.
There will be no services at this time. The Rose family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

Stanley Ernest "Stan" Latowski
MARQUETTE -- Stanley Ernest "Stan" Latowski, 32, of 2043 Cherry Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Wednesday, August 29, 2001, at his home following a heart attack.
Stan was born January 2, 1969 in Milwaukee, WI, a son of Stanley Joseph and Muriel Eleanor (Schlosser) Latowski. He moved to Marquette in November of 1969 and was a 1987 graduate of the Marquette Senior High School, where he had played on the football team for a time. He was employed as a cook at the former Alexander's Restaurant, UpFront and Company, and later worked in security at the Ojibwa Casino II in Harvey. Stan was an avid bowler, enjoyed fishing, loved animals, and had acquired an extensive baseball card collection over the years. He also had served as a little league umpire.
A loving son, brother, and nephew, he is survived by: his parents, Stan and Muriel Latowski of Marquette; brother, Steve Latowski of Marquette; his aunts and uncles, Robert (Mary) Latowski of Sheboygan, WI, Carson (Florie) Schlosser of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, Janet (Bill) Coburn of Swartz Creek, Blair Schlosser and Arlene (Frank) Arsenault both of Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada; and several cousins. Stan was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Stan and Helen Latowski; and maternal grandparents, Ernest and Jean Schlosser.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Monday, September 3, from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. Monday evening in St. Christopher Catholic Church with Rev. Alexander Sample, pastor, officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Stan's pallbearers will be: Todd Barr, Carl Bess, Bruce Bureau, Mike Olson, Steve Sanderson, and Derrick Sandstrom.
Thomas H. Warren
REPUBLIC -- Thomas H. Warren, age 82, of P.O. Box 372, Republic, passed away Thursday, August 30, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for the past 1 month.
Thomas was born November 28, 1918 in Negaunee to the late Thomas J. & Beatrice Anne (Hatch) Warren. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II.
Thomas worked for the C.C.I. Mining Company, first as an underground miner and retired as a plant repairman from the Republic Mine in 1977. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Republic.
Thomas took pride and maintained beautiful gardens, enjoyed woodworking, and volunteered his time snow plowing for residents of Republic. He was an avid hunter & sports fan, especially a fan of the Green Bay Packers.
Thomas is survived by his wife of 32 years, Elna (Pantti) Warren, 5 children; Thomas R. Warren of Pearl, MS and Mabel Warren of Jackson, MS, Sherrill (Victor) Hansen of Babylon, NY, Clarice (Daryl) Champion of Ishpeming, Karen (Jerry) Feist of Atlanta, GA and Bruce (Vickie) Pantti of Palm Springs, CA, sister, Shirley Harvala, of Ishpeming, his 13 grandchildren, whom he enjoyed, Paula, Thomas, Grace, Ocelia, Nathaniel, Kelly, Erik, Vickie Lynn, Delcene, Mark, Scott, Jennifer and Heidi, 19 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Thomas was preceded in death by his first wife Alice (Kobie) Warren, a daughter Delcene, a brother Donald Warren, & 2 sisters Merle Hebert and Harriet Warren.
Funeral services will be held 5:00 p.m. Sunday, September 2, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Lance Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Louis J. Beaudin
NEGAUNEE -- Louis J. Beaudin, age 48, of 101 Woodland Dr., Negaunee, was pronounced dead on arrival at Marquette General Hospital on Friday, August 31, 2001.
Louis was born August 24, 1953 in Marquette to Donna Mae (Emmanuelson) and Louis J. Beaudin, Sr., was a graduate of Marquette Senior High School and was a life long area resident. He attended Northern Michigan University before he joined CCI, where he worked at the Tilden Mine as a repairman. He had 28 1/2 years of service with the company. His hobby was riding his Harley motorcycle and he loved to spend time at home with his family.
Surviving are his wife, Terri (Tammelin); a son, Louis J. Beaudin, III, serving in the U.S. Army and stationed at Camp Casey, South Korea; a daughter, Jamie Beaudin, Negaunee; his parents, Donna Mae and Louis J. Beaudin, Sr., Marquette; a sister, Michelle Beaudin, Negaunee; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. John J. Shiverski officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens.

Patricia Lou Foster
MONTGOMERY, AL -- Patricia Lou Foster, 68, a resident of Edgewater, FL, died Saturday, September 1, 2001 in a Montgomery hospital. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 6:00pm from the Leak-Memory Chapel. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00pm prior to the service. Burial will be in Edgewater, FL at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens with Dudley Funeral Home Directing.
Survivors include her husband, Norman Lee Foster, Edgewater,FL; children, Deborah Helton, Riverview, MI, Michael Lee Foster, Bay City, TX and Mark S. Foster, Montgomery, AL; mother, Helen Martin, Edgewater, FL; brother, Bud Bindhamer, Edgewater, FL; three sisters, Donna Crum, North Carolina, June Moss, Center Pointe, IN and Carole Mehner, Danville, IN; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Frederick W. Becks, Jr.
NEWBERRY -- Frederick W. Becks, Jr., 93, passed away Thursday evening, August 30, 2001 at the Mercy Manor in Grayling, Michigan where he had been residing for the past few years.
A Newberry native and lifelong resident, Fred was born August 18, 1908 to Frederick Sr. and Susan (McFadden) Becks. He attended Tahquamenon Area Schools, graduating in 1927, and went on to pursue a business course at Ferris Institute.
Fred was a member of the Newberry High School 1926 class C championship basketball team. A veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army, he served as a military policeman in the European Theater until his honorable discharge on November 12, 1945. Fred was a charter member of the B.P.O.E. #1705 and member of both the American Legion Post #74 and the Veterans of Foreign War #4418 all of Newberry.
A well-known area businessman, he was an early agent for the Standard Oil Company who began by delivering kerosene for lighting and heating in five gallon cans to customers in Newberry, Deer Park, Whitefish Point and Hulbert. Fred retired in 1996 after 30 years with the company.
Survivors include his wife of sixty years, the former Mary Collins of Grayling; daughter, Patricia (Michael) Kaas of Arlington, VA; son Robert (Carol) Becks of Grayling; five grandchildren, Michelle (Lawrence) Cinciripino of Malvern, PA, Nicole (Michael) Hopkins of Falls Church, VA, Annie Becks and Jessica (John) Barber all of Holland, MI and Christopher Kaas of Arlington, VA.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 6, 2001 at 9:00am at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Rev. George Morse officiating with intermenty following at the Engadine Cemetery in Engadine. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 5 from 6-8pm.

Nels Richard "Dick" Olson
CHRISTMAS -- Nels Richard "Dick" Olson, age 61, of E7901 Holly Drive, Christmas, died following a three month illness on Thursday, August 30, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dick was born on November 29, 1939 in Munising, Michigan to the late Nels and Ellen (Virta) Olson. He attended schools in Munising and Ishpeming. On January 16, 1957, Dick joined the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He served aboard the U.S.S. Gurke (DD-783) and the U.S.S. Jarvis (DD-799). He was discharged from the service on November 2, 1960. Dick married Doris Marie Newton on April 23, 1961 in Reno, NV. They moved to Fairbanks, Alaska and Dick had worked for the Post Office and for Warren Airlines. They moved to California and then Reno where Dick had been employed at different jobs, including a position with the Reno Fire Department. They moved back to Munising and Dick worked for the Paper Mill. Throughout his working life, Dick had worked at numerous construction sites around the country. He spent time working as the manager of the Dog Patch and most recently, worked for the Munising Public School System as a bus driver and then for Altran. Dick loved driving the school bus and the children that were on his route. He enjoyed traveling with Doris and hunting. Above all, Dick loved spending time with his grandson, Kyle.
He is survived by his wife of over forty years, Doris Olson of Christmas; son, Richard Keith Olson of Madison, IN; daughter, Connie (Don) Gatiss of Wetmore; grandson, Kyle Richard Olson of Folsom, LA; sisters, Barbara (Shirl) Robare of Munising, Patsy Guadagnoli of Madison, IN and Karen Schmidtman of Munising; brother, Terry Olson of MacChenny, FL; step-mother, Agnes Olson of Munising; step-sister, Carolyn and David Olson of Skandia; step-brother, Jerry Pracey of Royal Palm Beach, FL; brother-in-law, Chester Pawielski of Munising; step-grandson, Josh Gatiss; aunt, Ethel Adams of Munising; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick was also preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Pawielski, an uncle Michael Adams and a brother-in-law, David Schmidtman.

Pastors Kurt V. and Mary Beth Kovanen will officiate the funeral in the funeral home chapel at 4:00pm. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the Alger County Veterans Council will conduct graveside services. Dick will be escorted by Donald Gatiss, Jr., David Schmidtman, Howard Masters, David Cromell, Herb Brown and George Anderson.
