Paul Bryan Grahovac
MUNISING -- On Saturday. September 15, 2001 at l: l8 p.m., Deputy Paul Grahovac was killed at the scene of a multi-car accident just outside of Munising on M-28. Deputy Grahovac was at the scene assisting with extrication when a responding fire truck arriving at the scene from a steep hill, lost its brakes and struck Deputy Grahovac. Paul was born on October 17 1966 in Elkhart, OH, and Ronald (Lois) Swaim of Naples, FL; aunt- Maria Barrick of McAllen, Michigan. He was a World War II Army-Air Corp veteran and was very proud of his military service, which included action in Italy and North Africa. On April 29, 1946, he married the former Gwen Williams and she preceded him in death on November 9, 1999.
Richard worked for many years with the Berkley Public School System retiring as a custodian. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a great outdoorsman. He was a member of Greenfield Presbyterian Church in Berkley.
Survivors include two children, Michael (Chris) Grant of Indian River, MI and Barbara (Sean) Fosmire of Marquette; also two granddaughters, Sara and Laura Fosmire.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Park Cemetery with the Rev. Charles L. Tooman officiating. There will be no visitation.

FULTON, MS -- Dwayne M. Dulaney, age 57 of Fulton, Michigan.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at 11:00am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry with Pastor David Hueter officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday, September 19 from 10:00am until time of services.

Martha Lohva Kauppila
NEGAUNEE --Martha Lohv Kauppila, formerly of Negaunee, passed away September 11, 2001. Martha was born on October 18, 1918 in Hancock, MI. She lived in Negaunee, MI from 1952 until moving to Phoenix, AZ in 1969. Martha enjoyed being a pastor's wife and being involved in the lives of her children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Reuben W. Kauppila in 1986; her brother, William Gustafson; and sister, Gertrude Curtin. Martha was the loving mother of Bernice Mass of Phoenix, AZ, William (Carol) Kauppila of Seattle, WA, Judith (Jerry) Smith of Racine, WI, David (Luanne) Kauppila of Enumclaw, WA and Mark (Tammy) Kauppila of Surprise, AZ. She is the cherished grandmother of Kathy, Jeanine, Phil, Eric, Josh, Beth, Andy, Sarah Lynette, Joel, Sarah Marie, Austin and Taylor; beloved great grandmother of Miguel, Christian and Caleb. A funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at 11:00am at the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church in Negaunee, MI with Reverend D. Michael Carriere officiating. Burial will take place in Northland Chapel Gardens. Visitation will be at the church after 10:00am on Wednesday. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Beth Newland
MARQUETTE -- Beth Newland, 79, formerly of Painesville, North Carolina, died on Monday evening, September 17, 2001, following a long illness. She was surrounded by her family and assisted by Lake Superior Hospice.
Beth leaves behind her much loved husband, Paul Newland of Marquette, as well as her three children and their spouses: Kip and Jean Newland of Canberra, Australia; Kate and Theo McCracken of Marquette; and Claire and Peter Wise of Mentor, NC 28479, the animal rescue shelter where Beth and Paul adopted their beloved dog, Ginger.
Beth will be greatly missed, yet her memory will remain in our hearts. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
Joan C. "JoJo" Trepanier
MARQUETTE -- Joan C. "JoJo" Trepanier, 68, of 227 Genesee Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Friday afternoon, September 14, 2001, at her home in the care and comfort of her family and the caregivers of Lake Superior Hospice. She had been in ill health for the past five years. JoJo was born August 22, 1933 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Alfred and Maude (McCrow) Barshaw. A lifelong resident, she was a 1950 graduate of the Graveraet High School. On July 23, 1954 she married Wayne W. Trepanier in Marquette and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family. JoJo was employed for many years as a cashier at Jack's IGA. A member of St. Peter Cathedral, she enjoyed playing BINGO, going to the casino, regularly playing cards with her friends, and loved to clean. A loving wife, mother, proud grandparent, and sister, she is survived by: her husband of 47 years, Wayne W. Trepanier; two daughters, Gail Trepanier and Crystal (Josh Irwin) Trepanier both of Marquette; son, Rodney (Kristi) Trepanier of Green Bay, WI; her grandchildren, Rodney Jr, Christopher, Randy, Brandi, Angel, Samantha, Desiree, Latisha, and Latoya; two brothers, Alfred (Dorothy) Barshaw and Bill (Cassie) Barshaw both of Marquette; three sisters, Shirley Beigler, Pearl (Bob) Beaudry, and Beverly (Sheldon) Nord all of Marquette; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, JoJo was preceded in death by her infant son, Randy Joseph; and sisters, Cora N.H.S. 100 yard dash record still stands today. He attended N.M.U. and earned a Bachelors Degree in Education in 1939. He was employed as a teacher and coach in Ontonagon from 1939-41. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1941-46 in Burma, China, & India. He was discharged as a Captain in 1946 and served in the Army Reserve from 1946-53 ,and was discharged with the rank of Major. He began his career with the Negaunee Public Schools as a math teacher in 1946 and earned a Masters of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan State University for a year, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1941, he married the former Mary Johnston of Sedalia, MO. Upon return from the war, he returned to Trout Creek, then moved to Ontonagon in 1946. Rudy worked for the Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He was also a prominent organizer of community events. Rudy co-founded K & S Flex-O-Matic, Incorporated and patented several products such as accessories to better sport. During his career, Rudy was a salesman for a variety of businesses and was an artist, writer, poet, storyteller and a ceaseless ambassador for the paradise he believed was our great Ontonagon land.
Rudy was a past member of the Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ontonagon Historical Society, and attended the Ontonagon United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary, of Ontonagon; his sister Gertrude "Gertie" Westerburg of Ironwood; two sons, Ted (Margaret) Saari of Victorville, Michigan died early morning Tuesday, September 18, 2001 at his home. He was born January 17, 1940 in Munising, MI. Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home Friday, September 21, 2001 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. A graveside service will be conducted in the Mathias Township Cemetery, Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Irene White officiating. Pauline E. "Betty" Lattrel
MARQUETTE -- Pauline E. "Betty" Lattrel, 79, formerly of 900 Garfield Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life Monday evening, September 17, 2001, at Munising Memorial Hospital where she had been hospitalized for two days. She had been in ill health for the past six months. Betty was born March 29, 1922 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Sigmond and Mary (Musolf) Stanley. She was raised in Marquette and was a 1940 graduate of the Graveraet High School. She later attended Northern Normal College (now Northern Michigan, died on Wednesday, September 19, 2001, early morning at his home. He was born on January 17, 1940 in Munising, Michigan. Vic lived in Brighton the past 5 years, although he lived most of his life in the Ann Arbor area, and was formerly of Trenary. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for various construction companies in the Ann Arbor area.
Besides his mother, a sister, Phyllis Lindner of Athens, Michigan at 11:00 a.m.
Jennie Ruuska
CHATHAM -- Jennie Ruuska, age 78, of E3564 Loudspur Road, Chatham, passed away quietly at her home. Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service. The funeral will be conducted on Monday, September 24, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham. Complete arrangements will be announced by the Bowerman Funeral Home.
Leonella "Sue" Larson
MUNISING -- Leonella "Sue " Larson, age 87, of N6X58 Connors Road, Munising, died on Wednesday, September l9, 2001 at 11:45 p.m. at the Munising Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 30, 1914 in Munising to the late Edward and Minnie (Beauparland) Montcalm. Sue graduated from Sacred Heart School and then from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1932. She worked briefly at the Munising Woodenware. Sue married Karl Larson on January 10, 1940. They were married over fifty-six years when he preceded her in death on March 10, 1996. Sue was a beautiful seamstress. She loved to sew, knit, crochet and embroider. She was a member of Munising's TOPS club and also enjoyed watching baseball and game shows, and going out for dinner. Her greatgrandchildren and grandchildren meant the world to her.
Sue is survived by her daughter - Pat (Bud) Morrison of Munising; grandchildren - Kevin Morrison, Chris Morrison, and Robb Morrison; great-grandchildren- Kris, Amber, Chelsey, Deidre, and Derek Morrison; brothers - Benedict Montcalm of Hunt of Cheboygan, MI, Marie Kempainen of Detroit, and Ann Stahelin of Ludington, Ml; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and Karl, Sue was preceded in death by brothers, Gerald and Donald Montcalm, and a by sisters, Barbara Mattson and Eileen Sarrault.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Deacon James E. Anderson will conduct the funeral service from the Bowerman Funeral Chapel on Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
