Jennie nee Bartol Ruuska
CHATHAM -- Jennie nee Bartol Ruuska, age 86, of E3564 Loudspur Road, Chatham, passed away quietly at her home. She was born on June 12, 1915 in Newberry to Yugoslavian immigrants, Frank and Johanna (Benchina) Bartol. She married Finnish immigrant John Edward Ruuska on January 26, 1936. In her early years, Jennie worked at the Old Victorian Hotel in Munising. Then she also worked at the Superior Foliage and Preserving Company and the A & W Restaurant in Munising. Jennie enjoyed reading, gardening and spending time in her flower beds.

She is survived by her son, John Allen (Sally) Ruska of Kiva; daughter, Nancy (James) Fitzpatrick of Waterford, MI; grandchildren, Mark (Susan) Ruska of Freeport, ME, Cheryl Biermaker of Menominee, MI, Denice Hurt of Princeton, WV, Lori (Barry) Bednar of London, England, Lisa (Shawn) Barth of Clarkston, MI and Clayton J. Ruska of Russelville, KY; great grandchildren, Lacey and Joshua Biermaker, Brandon and Justin Hurt, Tanner and Kyle Barth and Breck Bednar. Jennie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, a daughter Beverly Jean Maki, a son Michael Frank Ruuska, a sister Mary Bartol, and brothers Edward, Louis and Joseph Bartol.

Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00pm and at the church on Monday from 1:00pm until the time of the funeral service. Reverend Paul Kelto will conduct the funeral on Monday, September 24, 2001 at 2:00pm at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham. Interment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.

Charles Gangloff
ST. PETERSBURG, FL- Charles Gangloff, 85, of Bayonet Point, FL, died Saturday, September 8, 2001 at James A. Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa. Born in York, PA, he moved there nine years ago from Marquette. He was a miner and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and member of the American Legion. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; three sons, John Gangloff of Dover, FL, Joseph Petrany of Ishpeming and Steven Petrany of Peoria, IL; two brothers, Lewis, Jr. and Robert; and three sisters, Catherine Gangloff, Margaret Jensen and Cecelia Harter, all of York, PA; and six grandchildren.

Sandra Anne Fetterhoff

SHINGLETON -- Sandra Anne Fetterhoff, age 58, of El2624 Johnson Road, Shingleton, died following a two month illness on Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 10:20 a.m. at Marquette General Hospital. Sandy was born on July 17, 1943 in Ypsilanti, Michigan to Raymond and Myrtle (Barker) Perry. As a young girl, she and her family moved to Munising. Sandy married Dennis A. Fetterhoff on July 5, 1964. She was a nurse's aide, working fifteen years at Superior Shores Nursing Home and then nine years at the Superior Health Haven.

Sandy was a member of the Women of the Moose. She enjoyed knitting, her dogs, the Detroit Tigers and Sandy loved flower gardening.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis Fetterhoffof Shingleton; daughter & son-in-law, Melody & Dan Cutler of Raleigh, NC; 3 granddaughters - Tonya and Jessica, both of Greenville, NC and Angela of Raleigh, NC; her parents - Raymond and Myrtle Perry of Munising; sisters - Delores (Bill) Thompson of Shingleton, Edna Paine of Munising, and Cindy (Tom) Hoy of Shingleton; brothers - Jeffery (Wilma) Perry of Munising, David Perry of Christmas, Timothy Perry of Shingleton, Robert (Pat) Perry of Milwaukee, WI, and Todd (Peggy) Perry of Syracuse, IN; brothers-in-law, Gerald Fetterhoffofthe U.S.A. and Mike FetterhoffofFruitport, MI; sisters-in-law , Connie Mertz of Lower Michigan and Mary Eastling of Muskegon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pastors Mary Beth and Kurt Kovanen will conduct a memorial service on Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at l l :00 a.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Visiting time with family and friends will begin at the funeral home at l0:00 a.m.

Anthony Francis Valenti Sr.
LUMBERTON, VA -- Anthony Francis Valenti Sr., 81, of 316 W. 19th St., died Wednesday, Sept. 12, at his home.

The funeral was on Saturday, Sept. 15, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Lumberton, Father Robert Yankevitch officiating, burial followed in Lamb Cemetery in Fairmont.

Valenti served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a purchasing agent for Alamac Textile for 22 years and a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Mary Donato Valenti.

Surviving are his wife, Minnie Lamb Valenti of the home; three sons, Anthony "Tony" Francis Valenti Jr. and his wife Donna, Michael Valenti and Paul Gregory Valenti, all of Lumberton; two daughters, Rita Cayer of Salt Lake City and Angie Evans and her husband, James, of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Columbus Valenti of Skokie, Ill, and Nicholas Valenti of Marquette, MI; a half-brother, Fred Keskey of Ishpeming, MI; a sister, Rose Warner of Ishpeming, MI; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family received friends at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory Inc. in Lumberton.

George F. Bur

ALBUQUERQUE, NM -- George F. Bur, 77, of Albuquerque, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2001.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lois Marie Bur. Their six children; nine grandchildren, and two great- grandchildren. George was also survived by his brother, Kenneth Bur.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Charles Joseph Bur and Mary Mildred Miller. His Brothers; Francis Bur and Richard Bur. All of Marquette, Michigan. He died of a six year bout with Alzheimers. His love and commitment to his wife and family will forever live in our hearts. May the good Lord bless him and keep him in His care.

Gladys B. Bradford

SKANDIA -- Gladys B. Bradford, 87, of 1619 Engman Lake Road, Skandia, died Monday afternoon, September 24, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee where she had resided for one week.

Mrs. Bradford was born on March 17, 1914 in Miakka, Florida to the late Rev. W.A. and Lula (Young) Betts. She was a 1934 graduate of Texas University with a teaching certificate. She taught school in Flint, Frankenmuth and Saginaw, Michigan. Gladys enjoyed golfing, bird watching, working crossword puzzles, croquet and making pottery. She attended Gwinn United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Bradford moved to this area with her late husband in 1999 after having lived in Cherokee Village, Arkansas, Flint, Saginaw and Frankenmuth, Michigan. She had also been a resident at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living in Marquette.

Survivors include two sons, Stuart W. (Sally) Bradford of Skandia and William C. (Sundae) Bradford of Woodinville, WA; four grandchildren, Richard, Doug, Vanessa and Stuart Bradford; four great grandchildren, Emily Perkins, Evan Stanley, Sarah Faith Bradford and Richard Stuart Bradford; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband, Stuart W. Bradford whom she married on July 1, 1939 in Saginaw, Michigan and who died on August 13, 1999; also nine sisters and five brothers.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11am in the Gwinn United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jackie Roe officiating.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Gwinn United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 354, Gwinn, MI 49841.

The Bradford family wishes to thank all of the caregivers that made Gladys' final days more enjoyable and full of life.

Ronald J. Oljymaki

RICHMOND TOWNSHIP -- Ronald J. Oljymaki, 80, formerly of Midway Location in Richmond Township, died September 12, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, September 28, 2001 at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. Christine Thomas-Echelbarger will officiate. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 12:00 noon until the time of service at 1:00pm on Friday.

William "Bill" Douglas

MUNISING -- William "Bill" Douglas, age 75, of 420 Mill St., Munising, died on Sunday, September 23, 2001 at 1:28 a.m. at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, in Madison, Wisconsin. He was born on February 26, 1926 in Munising and was a lifetime resident. Bill graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1953. Bill was a World War II veteran, joining the U.S. Navy on May 19, 1943. He trained at the Great Lakes Naval Station, NATTC in Memphis, Tenn, NAGS in Hollywood, Florida, NAS in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; he served in the Asiatic- Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Wasp. He worked as an aviation radioman; he received several medals; Asiatic- Pacific with 8 stars; American camp; Air Medal; Combat aircrew man; World War II Victory Medal; and Philippine Liberation Medal. He was discharged from the service December 20, 1945.

On June 15, 1950 he married Elaine Credland.

In 1946, Bill began a long career in retail clothing business. He started working for Burns Department Store, (which was later known as the Peoples Store) as a clerk, within a short time he became manager. In 1969, Bill went to work for Lauerman's Department Store in Manistique, working there until 1978. Bill then changed careers and moved to Chicago and worked for Kane Security for 17 years; he supposedly retired in 1997, only to begin part time employment in Munising one year later with Pinkerton Security at Kimberly Clark, a job he held until his recent illness.

After World War II, Bill joined a local band in Munising and played trumpet with them until the late 50s, he loved "Big Band Sound." Bill also enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of the American Legion, Roderick Prato Post #131. He was a former member of the Munising Lions Club, and also a former member of the Rotary Club in Manistique. Bill served on the Munising School Board for 8 years.

He is survived by his wife Elaine of Munising; a son Larry (Shirley) Douglas of Seattle, Washington. Their children- Lynn (Tom) Karvala of Caspian, MI, Pat (Bob) Renton of Cheyenne, WY, Carol (Tom) McCutcheon of Munising, Judy Douglas of Baltimore, MD, Susan (Rob) Stella of Park Forest, IL, Rob Douglas of San Diego, CA also 9 grandchildren. Besides Bills parents Lee and Nola (Critzer) Douglas, he was preceded in death by a son William Lowell Douglas, Jr. who was killed in the Vietnam War.

Friends and family will gather at the American Legion Post #131 in Munising where Father Dennis L. Borea will conduct a Memorial Service on Thursday, September 27, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. immediately following the Memorial Service the American Legion Honor Guard will conduct a Veteran's service. Following the services, there will be a fellowship gathering at the Legion where there will be time for visiting will Bill's family and friends, sharing of stories about Bill, and celebrating his life.

Art Ranta
IRONWOOD, MI-- Art Ranta, 59, of 407 Hoven Road, Ironwood, died unexpectedly Monday evening, August 6, 2001, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, MN.

He was born March 3, 1942, in Ironwood, the son of Jennie (Spets) and the late Alfred Ranta. He attended Roosevelt and North Bessemer grade schools, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1960. Following high school, Art worked in Racine, WI, for a short time, then came back to Ironwood and worked at Schult Mobile Homes and attended Gogebic Community College.

Art served a six-month tour of duty in the U.S. Army as a medic in Vietnam. Following his discharge in 1966, he attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette and received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1970, then furthered his education and received a permanent teaching certificate. He then taught in the Ontonagon Area School District for 27 years, retiring in May 1997.

Art was a substitute teacher in Ironwood area schools and also worked as a night custodian at Blackjack Mountain Ski Resort this past winter. He was a member of the Michigan Education Association, an honorary member of the National Honor Society, current member and Vice President of Copper Peak Ski Flying Association Inc., current Vice President of the 4H Council, and shooting sports 4H club leader. He was also a ski jumper and jumping coach for the Wolverine Ski Club, was involved with Camp Superior, and was an avid fisherman and hunter and a certified hunter safety instructor.

Art was the "chumpion" to all who knew him. Anyone who ever knew him was a better person for knowing him. He had an excellent sense of humor, and was a devoted son, husband, father, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend.

He was married to the former Liz Scott on January 3, 1976, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer, by the Reverend Louis Bracket. Liz survives.

Also surviving are four sons, Daniel Alfred, Houghton, and Chris James, Benjamin Arthur, and Andrew Scott, all at home; a daughter, Erin Elizabeth Ranta, Ironwood; and his mother, Jennie Ranta, Ironwood Township.

Other survivors include a brother, Joe (Bea), Ironwood and formerly of Swartz Creek, MI; four sisters, Marie (Gordy) Gurske, Gile, WI, Margo (Ron) Rantanen, Ishpeming, Pat Ranta, Ewen, and Kathy (Marvin) Maki, Ironwood Township; a sister-in-law, Vivian Ranta, Ironwood; several aunts and uncles; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his father, Art was preceded in death by a twin brother, Wesley, in 1993.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 10, at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home in Ironwood.

Pallbearers were Dan, Chris and Joe Ranta, Joe Ranta Jr., and Bruce and Brett Rantanen.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Peace Adopt-A-Student Program, Ironwood.

Dwayne M. Dulaney

FULTON, MS - Dwayne M. Dulaney, 57, of Fulton, Mississippi, died on September 17, 2001 at his residence. He was born on August 14, 1944 to James Elger Dulaney and Faye Harden in Tupelo, MS. At age 18, he was inducted into the U.S. Air Force and served four years. He lived in Michigan for 20 years, where he was employed at Bunny Bread Bakery, and was a member of the Marquette American Legion. He moved back to Fulton in 1983 and was employed in maintenance with E.R. Carpenter Co. He was a member of the Light House Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Dearman Dulaney of Fulton, MS; 2 daughters, Kathy (Scott) Henry of Marquette, MI and Cheri (Mike) Sanderson of Marquette, MI; 1 son, Dwayne Dulaney and fiance Angelia of Newberry, MI; 1 sister, Laura Boyd of Tupelo, MS; 2 brothers, Doyle Dulaney of Saltillo, MS and Duford Dulaney of Fulton, MS; and 9 grandchildren.

Funeral services were be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at 1:00pm at the Senter Funeral Home. Bros. Wallace Strawn and Jerry Nichols officiated. Pallbearers were Billy Boyd, David Dulaney, Matthew Lucas, Terry Rackley, Walter Rock, Mike Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Light House Baptist Church Sunday School class and former E.R. Carpenter employees. Burial will be at the Itawamba Memorial Garden Cemetery.

Edward R. Aho

PELKIE, MI -- Edward R. Aho, 81, of Pelkie, passed away at his home Wednesday, September 26, 2001. Ed was born March 2, l920 in Baraga MI., son of the late Oscar and Ida (Siltaniemi) Aho. He attended Baraga Schools and was a lifetime resident. On April 19, I941 he married the former Aune Turpeinen in Pelkie He was employed as an insurance agent for many years and owned and operated the Aho Dairy in Baraga He served on the Baraga township zoning committee and was director of MUCC District 19. Ed was an avžd sportsman and

enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling. He was a charter member of the former Wolverine Sportsmens Club, which later became the Ottawa Sportsmens Club He was a lifetime member of that organization and had served as its president severaI different terms.

Ed is survived by Aune, his loving wife of 60 years; son, Dale (Evelyn) Aho of Marquette, daughters, Sandra (Michael) Faucher of Baraga, Sharon (Frank) Stipech of Houghton, 9 grandchildren, 5 great - grandchildren, 4 sisters, Hulda LaCourt of Livonia, Ellen Rider of Livonia, Bertha Ranteanen of MiIwankee, Ethel (Drel) Kuster of Livonia. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded by I brother and 4 sisters.

Funeral services for Mr. Aho will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2001 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Michael Laako officiating. Internment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel from 12 noon, until time of service on Saturday. Friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon following the service in the Harrington Gathering Room located at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials

to Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie, or the Ottawa Sportsman's Club Endowment Fund. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse assisted the family with arrangements.

Harold Bordeau

OROVILLE, WA -- Harold Bordeau, 85, of Oroville, WA., died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, in North Valley Nursing Home in Tonasket, WA. He was born May 24, 1916 in Marquette, Michigan.

He served four years with the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war ended, he returned to Marquette where he went to work on the ore boats, sailing the Great Lakes. After his retirement, he left Marquette, and traveled the country. He eventually settled down in the State of Washington, where he has lived for the past 25 years.

Surviving are a sister Dorothy (Charles) Genetti of Clawson, MI., and many nieces & nephews. One of his nephews, Charles (Rose) Roberts lives in Ishpeming, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maude & Sidney Bordeau, four sisters, Marie Campbell, Marguerite Roberts, Evelyn Beaupre, & Gladys Dubois, & one brother, Phillip Bordeau. A service is to be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001.

Lois E. Sorensen

NEWBERRY -- Lois E. Sorensen, 61, former Newberry resident, of Cleveland OH, died Saturday September 22, 2001 at her residence. Graveside services will be held Saturday September 29, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Columbus Township Cemetery in McMillan with Fr. Paul Karottekunnel, of St. Gregory's Catholic Church, officiating. Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Tressie M. Ward

NEWBERRY -- Tressie M. Ward, 86, of Newberry, died Tuesday evening September 25, 2001 at the Luce County Annex in Newberry. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday October 1, 2001 at 10:00 am at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Newberry with Fr. Paul Karottekunnel officiating with Rite of Committal following at Forest Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home on Sunday September 30th from 5-8 pm where prayers for the deceased will be recited at 7:00pm with a Rebekah memorial service following at 7:30 pm. Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.
