Jim "Duke" Johnson
RIVERSIDE, CA -- Jim "Duke" Johnson, 66 years old, born in Ishpeming and raised in Negaunee, died at his home in Riverside, CA on Sept 23rd. he worked for the City of Riverside.
He is survived by his step-son and daughter-in-law; step-daughter and son-in-law; four step-grandchildren; a sister Betty "Martin" Havela in Negaunee; a sister Marilyn (Richard) Lukkonen in Riverside; several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Irene; his parents Betty (Syrjamaki) and Albert "Duke" Johnson; and a brother Rolland Johnson of Negaunee.
Funeral services were held in Riverside, CA.
Marie Gould
SHINGLETON -- Marie Gould, age 74, of Shingleton, died on Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at 4:10am at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on December 23, 1926 in Munising to the late John and Rose (DesArmo) Monroe. Marie graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School and on September 6, 1947, she married Joseph Thomas Gould. They were married over forty-six years before he preceded her in death on March 23, 1994. Marie waitressed at the Co-op and Wheelings in Munising and then went to work for Timber Products. She was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Shingleton and the Shingleton Recreation Club for many years. She enjoyed ceramics and woodcrafts.
Marie is survived by five children, Doug (Jeanie) Gould of Shingleton, Larry (Marcia) Gould of Shingleton, Iris (Ron) Bell of Shingleton, Thomas (Pam) Gould of Chatham and Todd (Mellissa Patterson) Gould of Shingleton; grandchildren, Chris, Travis, Mike, Sean, Ryan, Lucia, Kathy, Cassie, Heidi, Jack, Heather, Devon and Nicky; numerous great grandchildren; brothers, Steve (Denise) Monroe of Manistique and Joe (Ruth Ann) Monroe of Shingleton; sisters, Dormalee Monroe of Shingleton and Susie Delome of Manistique; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marie was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melissa Marie Syers, a grandson, Dillon Joseph Gould, a sister, Annabelle Burley, and brothers John, Virgil, Herman, Allan and George "Buck" Monroe.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00pm. Pastors Mary Beth and Kurt Kovanen will conduct the funeral on Saturday, October 6, 2001 at the Bowerman Funeral Home at 10:00am. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
Phyllis E. Lummukka
ISHPEMING -- Phyllis E. Lummukka, age 80 of 762 Maurice St., Ishpeming passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital.
Phyllis was born July 27, 1921 in Ishpeming to the late Toivo & Mavis (Cramer) Saline. she graduated from the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1939.
Phyllis worked as a seamstress at the H.W. Gossard Company. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and was a historian of World War I & II.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of 56 years Roy Lummukka, 2 sons; Michael (Iva) Lummukka of L'Anse & Jeffery Lummukka of Ishpeming, a sister Barbara Ostwald of Negaunee, 3 grandchildren; Paul (Kirsten) Lummukka of Iron River, Dana (HaeJin) Lummukka of Virginia Beach, VA and Liisa (Andrew) Analore of Germantown, MD, 4 great grandchildren; Andrew J., Molly, Clara and Darien, 2 nephews, 2 nieces, 2 great nephews and 2 great nieces.
Funeral services will held 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 8, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with lay minister Susan Boback to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Ronald J. Niemi
ARCADIA LOCATION -- Ronald J. Niemi, 70, a resident of Arcadia Location, died on Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Administration Center in Milwaukee, Wisc. He was born May 29, 1931, in Hancock, a son of the late Charles and Hilda (Kallio) Niemi and was a 1950 graduate of the Hancock High School.
On September 5, 1959, he married the former Helen Mattson in Larium. Ron was in the Merchant Marines working as a cook on the boats for a number of years. He also worked for various construction companies and for Vitton Brothers. Ron was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was a life member of the Disabled Americna Veterans and the Boston Vounteer Fire Department, which he helped organize. Ron enjoyed playing pool, trapping and cooking.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; 2 sons, Charles (Lisa) Niemi of Negaunee, Don Niemi of Hancock; 1 daughter, Barbara Niemi of Westland; 4 grandchildren, Joshua, Cassie, Zachary and Kyle Niemi of Hancock; 3 sisters, Viola (Charles) Dieter of Elk Grove, Ohio, and Rohma (John) Siller of Ann Arbor and Jacobsville; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Ron was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Julia Knox and Gertrude Boesch and 2 brothers, Carl and Harold.
As requested by Ron, cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2001, at the Jukuri-Antila Funeral Home in Hancock with Reuben Anderson to officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Tuesday. Inurnment will be in the Veteran's Section at Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock. Arrangements are being handled by Antila Funeral Service, Inc.
Dorothy K. Bissonnette
ISHPEMING -- Dorothy K. Bissonnette, age 86, of 111 Bluff St., Ishpeming, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2001 at the U.P. Home Health & Hospice's Inpatient unit located at Bell Memorial Hospital.
Dorothy was born in Ishpeming to Richard & Bertha (Blight) Kent on April 22, 1915. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. Dorothy graduated from the Ishpeming High School, class of 1932 and also completed Graduate School Commercial Course. She attended luncheons with many of her classmates every second Tuesday of the month for 69 years.
Dorothy worked as a secretary in the purchasing department of the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company for 34 years, retiring in 1985. She is past member of the Ishpeming Negaunee Women's Professional Organization.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by several cousins.
Funeral services will be held at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Monday, October 8, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Paul Donelson, pastor of the Wesley United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Monday from 2:00pm until the time of services.

Ruby M. Tessier
NEWBERRY -- Ruby M. Tessier, 81, of Newberry, died suddenly on Thursday afternoon, October 4, 2001 at the Lexington Methodist Hospital in Lexington, TN. Mrs. Tessier was visiting her step-daughter, Joyce Zardis of Lexington, in route to her winter residence.
Ruby was born March 9, 1920 in Newberry, daughter of the late Erick and Fredricka (Mattson) Nelson. A 1938 graduate of Newberry High School, Ruby was formerly employed at the Newberry Regional Mental Health Center and later at the Northville State Hospital Hawthorne Center for over 20 years until her retirement. Following retirement, Ruby spent her summer months in Newberry and her winter months in Tucson, AZ. A lifelong member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ruby's hobbies and interests included knitting, crocheting, cooking and reading.
Besides her parents, Ruby is preceded in death by her two brothers. Survivors include her husband George E. Tessier, Jr. of Newberry and Tucson, AZ; her children Roger (Lillian) Brooks of Marquette, Kay (Dewey) Lyke of Newberry and Veronica (Ronald) Smith of Northville; grandchildren Tracy Brooks, Eric (Erin) Brooks, Sean (Stephanie) Lyke, Grant (Amy) Lyke, Sherri Watts and Brad (Sue) Watts; also ten great grandchildren.
At request, cremation services will take place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 9, 2001 at 10:00am at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor David Hueter officiating. Inurnment will follow at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.

Ethel Lillian Adams
MUNISING -- Ethel Lillian Adams, age 77, of 1302 Bay Street, Munising, died unexpectedly at her home on Thursday, October 4, 2001. She was born on January 21, 1924 to the late Emil and Hilia Hellstein in Munising and was a lifetime resident. Ethel married Michael Paul Adams on August 30, 1941. They were married almost fifty nine years before Mike preceded her in death on August 14, 2000. Ethel worked as a waitress at Baij's Bar for twenty years. She and Mike had enjoyed traveling, and Ethel enjoyed flower gardening, reading, and especially the color season. She helped raise many of her nieces and nephews and she was always willing to help people in need.
She is survived by a brother-in-law, Julius Raica of Munising; sisters-in-law, Sophia DesArmo of Chelsea, MI and Catherine Kinder of Grand Rapids, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Eugene Virta, Bill Virta and a sister, Ellen Virta Olson.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00. Pastors Mary Beth and Kurt Kovanen will conduct the funeral service at the funeral home on Monday, October 8, 2001 at 10:00am. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
Francis L. "Bucky" Racine
ISHPEMING -- Francis L. "Bucky" Racine, age 79, of 895 Patriot Dr., North Lake, died Saturday morning October 6, 2001 at his home in the care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice.
Bucky was born April 8, 1922 in Ishpeming to the late Leo and Doris (LaFreniere) Racine. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1982 as a Maintenance Supervisor. Bucky was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church, the Ishpeming Elks Lodge and enjoyed the outdoors.
He is survived by a daughter Christine (Dale) Phillips of Ishpeming; a son Stephen "Abner" (Vicky) Racine of Ishpeming; brother Byrl Racine of Ishpeming; sister Lois Anderson of Munising; 4 grandchildren, Courtney (Devon) Johnson, Kerri (Brian) DeLongchamp, Casey Phillips and Megan Racine; 3 great granddaughters, Allie, Sophie and Brooke; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen on February 18, 2001 and a sister Gladys.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Ishpeming on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at 11am with Rev. Fr. James Challancin to officiate.
Inurnment will be at Northland Chapel Gardens.
The family will receive friends at St. Josephs Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 10 from 10am until the time of services.
Memorials may be directed to the Lake Superior Hospice in lieu of other expressions of sympathy.

Andrew Joseph Whitman
ESCANABA -- Andrew Joseph Whitman, of Escanaba, 21 month old infant son of Keith & Annette (Theut) Whitman, passed away early Sunday morning, October 7, 2001 at the family home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Iron Mountain on January 30, 2000.
His many friends and caregivers, that were blessed to have known and love him will especially remember him for his beautiful smiles and tenacious spirit. He touched the lived of many in such a short time and will be missed by all. Andrew is survived by: His parents: Keith and Annette, 3 brothers, Christian Jon Jacob, John Peter, Michael Francis all at home. Maternal grandparents: George & Betty Theut, St. Ignace, paternal grandparents, Margaret Whitman and Frank Whitman, L'Anse, special grandmother, Lois Clark, Escanaba and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends may call at the Allo Funeral Home on Monday after 7:00p.m. Rosary services will be held at 8:30 p.m. at the Allo Funeral Home Family Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial for Andrew Joseph Whitman will be celebrated at St. Anne Church on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Steber officiating. Interment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
Doris C. Verville
BLUE RIDGE, GA -- Doris C. Verville, age 74 of Blue Ridge, GA and formerly of Michigamme passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2001 at the Fannin Regional Hospital in GA. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Steven R. "Beav" Frisk
IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP -- Steven R. "Beav" Frisk, 51, of N-10684 Vanderhagen Rd., Ironwood Township, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning, Oct. 7, 2001 in his home.
He was born July 27, 1950, in Marquette, son of Ernest "Bud" and Rose (Pascoe) Frisk. He attended Champion, MI schools and graduated from Champion High School in 1968. He then attended Northern Michigan Education Special Services Association (MESSA) from Sept. 1996 until the time of his death. Steve was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Ironwood, the Ironwood Elks Lodge, and the Gogebic Country Club. He loved golfing, downhill and cross country skiing, and was a very talented woodcarver.
He was married to the former Barbara Searle Federico on Sept. 30, 2000, in Ironwood. She survives. Also surviving are sons Jared (Jenny), Farmington, MI, Joel, Ishpeming, and their sister Jessica Frisk; step-children John and Laura Federico, Ironwood; his mother and father, Bud and Rose Frisk, of Champion; brothers, Gary (Jennie), Utah, Mike (Ardith), Ishpeming, and Terry (Debbie), Milwaukee, Wis.; sisters, Bonnie (Rick) Stetson, Humboldt, MI and Lori (Gene) Uuro, Ishpeming, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. (CDT) at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Ironwood, with The Rev. Darryl Pepin, celebrant. Cremation will follow. Friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at church from noon until Mass time on Wednesday. McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, Inc., Ironwood, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Toivo J. Jarvinen
LAKE WORTH, FL -- Toivo J. Jarvinen, age 83, a former Negaunee resident died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001 in Lake Worth at the Finnish-American Nursing Home. Toivo was born March 15, 1918 in Negaunee to Jalmer & Tynne (Levelius) Jarvinen and was a graduate of the Univ. of Florida in 1955 and practiced law in the Lake Worth area for 45 years. He was also a general contractor and developed several properties in the Lake Worth- Lantana area. He was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his sons; William (Libby) Jarvinen, Huntsville, AL, Peter (Connie) Jarvinen, Lake Worth, grandchildren; Thomas & Jeffrey Jarvinen, Julie (Sean) Severin, and Jill (Justin) Peters,, great grandchildren; Cameron & Cayla Severin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Helen (Laukka) in 1998 and a son Jack.
Funeral services were held Sat. Oct. 6 in Lantana. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001 at the Negaunee Cemetery. Mr. Jarvinen's nephew, Rev. Thomas Wickstrom will officiate. Memorials may be directed to the Finnish- American Nursing Home in Toivo's memory. The Koskey Funeral Home is handling the local arrangements.
Hazel R. Borchert
MARQUETTE -- Hazel R. Borchert, 76, of 536 Meadow Brook Lane, Harvey, died Sunday morning at the Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette.
Mrs. Borchert was born January 5, 1925 in Marquette to the late Owen Charles and Rose (Lompre) Wagar. Hazel has formerly attended Marquette Gospel Tabernacle and enjoyed spending her life with family and friends.
She is survived by three children, Judith R. (Ron) Setter of Little Lake, Michael C. Borchert and his friend Anna of Middletown, CT and Sandi J. (Dave) Ayres of Hudson, FL; five grandchildren, Gerri Lemire, Terry (Becky) Lemire, Jaemi Setter, Ryan Setter, and Luke Ayres; one great grandson, Elliot Lemire, one great granddaughter, Jaelyn Pantti; one brother, Charles (Irene) Wagar of Marquette; two sisters, Beatrice Dionne of Harbor Springs, MI and Mary Dionne of Mocksville, Michigan in the mid-1980s and then to Blue Ridge, GA in the mid-1990s.
Survivors include her husband Joseph Verville of Blue Ridge, GA; sons- Roger Atherton of Ishpeming and Russell (Pam) Atherton of Doraville, GA; a daughter Judy (Dennis) Bentti of Land O' Lakes, WI; two step-sons- Danny (Helen) Verville of Detroit and Ted (Jean) Verville of Mission Veijo, CA; a sister Flora Mae (Duane) Olson of Gaylord, MI; two brothers- Donald Howe of Michigamme and Norman (Dorian) Howe of Negaunee; 16 grandchildren; along with several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband Gerald Atherton in 1959.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 12, 2001 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion with the Rev. Fr. Lawrence Gauthier to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme.
Friends may call at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Friday.
Pallbearers will be Art Benson, John Couveau, Jeremey Bentti, Michael Bentti, Emil Bentti and Gerald Atherton.
