John Edward Mantila
BARAGA -- John Edward Mantila, 92, of Baraga passed away October 9, 2001 at his residence following a short illness. He was born in Pelkie, MI on January 23, 1909 son of the late John and Sophia (Myllya) Mantila. He attended local schools and was a lifetime area resident. Ed married the former Barbara Spruce in L'Anse on May 6, 1944. Ed was a truck driver servicing the dairy industry, and had previously driven logging trucks. Ed was a member of the Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie. He was a former member of the F.O.E. Aerie Lodge #2287, L'Anse. Ed enjoyed fishing and farming. His favorite past time was dancing and listening to polka music.
Ed is survived by Barbara, his loving wife of 57 years; 3 sons, John (Gerry) Mantila of Baraga, James (Lisa) Mantila of Ishpeming, Carl Mantila of L'Anse, 3 daughters, Sylvia (Tim) Murray of Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Mavis Mantila of Minneapolis, MN, Kathleen Mantila of Alameda, CA, 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Sara, Emily, Kristin, sister, Ida Turpeinen of L'Anse. He was preceded by 2 brothers.
Funeral services for Mr. Mantila will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2001 from Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Dave Synder officiating. Interment will take place in the Pelkie Cemetery. the family will receive friends Thursday, October 11, 2001 from 6 until 9:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Friday. Friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon following the service in the Harrington Gathering Room located at the funeral home. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse assisted the family with arrangements.
Tamara J. Rehse
LITTLE LAKE -- Tamara J. "Tammy" Rehse, 40, of 1859 E. First Street, Little Lake, died unexpectedly Sunday morning at Marquette General Hospital.
Tammy was born February 8, 1961 in Aitkin, Minnesota, to the late Bernard & Elizabeth (Vander Wegen) Hoge. She was a 1979 graduate of Aitkin High School. She married Tim Rehse in June of 1981 in Aitkin. Tammy was a beloved employee of Jerry's Wilderness Room in Gwinn since 1990. She started as a waitress and later became the manager. She loved reading books and magazines, selling Avon and working with people at the restaurant.
Survivors include her husband, Tim; a son, John Rehse; daughter, Dwanna Rehse; her sister, Lisa (David) Banks of Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and relatives in Minnesota.
A memorial service will be held at the Gwinn Funeral Home on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jackie Roe officiating. There will be a luncheon and time of fellowship immediately following the service at the American Legion in Little Lake. Those who knew her are welcome to attend.
Todd M. Magadanz
MARQUETTE -- The angels came for Todd Michael Magadanz of 158 W. Main St., Marquette on Sunday, October 7, 2001 to take him to his heavenly home. Todd was 17 years old and died at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor after a lengthy illness. His many friends and family were blessed to share in his zest for life and unique personality and will miss him.
He was born on September 14, 1984 in Marquette to Dennis and Helen "Casey" (Pachmayer) Magadanz. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church. Todd spent all of life in inclusive education in the Marquette Area Public Schools where he was a sophomore. He enjoyed life, listening to music, giving his friends at school a "hard time", and was a "real people person".
Todd is survived by his parents, Dennis and Casey Magadanz; two sisters, Tara and Keri Magadanz, both of Marquette; a brother Dan (Jennifer) Magadanz of Boise, Idaho; his paternal grandmother, Genevieve Magadanz of Marquette; maternal grandparents, Helen and Charles Pachmayer of Ironwood, MI; niece Jordyn Jacobson of Marquette; nephew Drake Magadanz of CA; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Mike Magadanz, aunt Amelia Koski, and cousin Todd Majetich.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 5:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 11, 2001 at St. Louis Catholic Church with Reverend Guy S. Thoren officiating. Friends may call at the church from 2:00 P.M. until time of services. Burial wil take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family. Pallbearers will be Kelly Andryscik, Dave Magadanz, Mac Rabitaille and John Jacobson II.
William F. Ulrickson
ISHPEMING - William F. Ulrickson, age 80 of 975 N. Westwood Dr., North Lake Loc. passed away on Monday October 8, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming, he had been in ill health since July of 2000.
William was born February 26, 1921 in Ishpeming to the late Ulrick and Lyda (Johnson) Ulrickson. He served in the United States Army during World War II, having received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal. He returned to this area after the war and has resided here since. He worked for the C.C.I. Co. as a truck driver at several area mines, retiring from the Tilden Mine after 42 years with the company. He was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Ishpeming and the V.F.W. Post #4573 of Ishpeming.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years Margaret of North Lake, 3 daughters - Randi (David) Dalton of Courtland, NY, Trudi Cousino of Abilene, TX, and Lisa (Tony) Ombrello of Ishpeming; 2 sons - Mark (Colleen) Ulrickson of Sheboygan Falls, WI and Bruce (Jeri) Ulrickson of Granger, IN; a sister Evelyn (Marvin) Nadeau of Ishpeming; a sister-in-law Martha Ulrickson of Ishpeming; 13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Peter Ulrickson and a brother George Ulrickson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday October 12, 2001 at the Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. Thomas Lee to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Bertha Johnson
SKANDIA -- Bertha Mary Johnson, age 94, of 115 Dalton Road, Skandia died Wednesday morning October 10, 2001 in the Norlite Nursing Center. She was born on October 16, 1906 in Chatham, MI to Leon and Adila (Montcalm) Viger.
She was an active member of the Skandia United Methodist Church and the Skandia Lioness Club. Bertha enjoyed crocheting, working in her garden, and attending community activities.
She is survived by her daughter Janet (Orval) Barnett of Skandia. Her son Les (Mary) Johnson of Skandia. Eight grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl in 1972 and a sister Florence "Toots" Ohlen.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 12, 2001 at 3:00 P.M. in the Skandia United Methodist Church with Reverend Charles West officiating. Friends may call at the church from 1:00 P.M. until time of services. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Memorials to the Skandia United Methodist Church in her memory.

Cecil Albert Bovan
AUTRAIN -- CeciI Albert Bovan, age 84, of 3306C Michigan Central Blvd., Roscommon, MI, died on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 in the early morning at his home following a two year illness. Cecil was born on December 2O, 1916 in Munising to the late Albert and Alvina (Gravelle) Bovan. He was raised in AuTrain and graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1936. Cecil had been married to the late Iva Olmstead and they had seven children together. On October 28. 1943, he entered into the U.S. Army. DuringWWII, he earned the Victory Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, two overseas bars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the European- African- Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two bronze battle stars for campaigns at Rhineland and Central Europe. He was discharged on January 10, 1946. Cecil had worked as a plumber in the Munising area and then moved to Detroit and worked there. He married Dagmar V. nee Swanberg Salminen in Farwell, Michigan in December of 1968. Cecil worked for the State of Michigan for many years as a plumbing inspector and retired from the State in 1979. He and Dagmar had a cottage in the Higgins Lake area and they gradually moved there during the early 1980's. He was a past member of the Munising Moose Lodge and a current member of the Grayling Moose Lodge, the Mt. Pleasant American Legion, the V.F.W. of Roscommon, and the AMVETS of Higgins Lake. Cecil loved music and had always played the organ or piano in local bands. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and after his retirement, he was very involved with woodworking.
He is survived by his wife of over thirty-two years, Dagmar of Roscommon Higgins Lake; sons - Gary Bovan of Farwell, MI, David Bovan of Billings, Montana, and Larry (Jane) Bovan of Farwell, MI; daughters - Linda (Patrick) Matson of Blaine, Minnesota, Evelyn O'Sullivan of San Leandro, CA, and Karen (Greg) Pruett of Edgerton, Missouri; stepsons - Robert (Carol) Salminen of Lake Elsinore, CA, Roger (Evaughn ) Salminen of Goodrich, MI, David (Gale) Salminen of Escanaba, and Scott (Joanne) Salminen of Claire, MI; 23 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cecil was preceded in death by a son, Paul Bovan, who was killed in Vietnam in 1970 and eleven siblings, Marvel Doucette Campbell, Marie Radloff, Berniece Doucette, Loretta Martin, Hattie Freed, Evelyn Stem, Dorothy Kellogg, and Orphus "Tony", Harold, Albert Jr., and William Bovan.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00p.m. Father Dennis L. Borca will conduct the funeral service on Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Chapel in Munising. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham, Michigan where the Alger County Veterans Council will conduct graveside services.

MARQUETTE -- Charles T. Devonshire, age 88, of 222 South 5th St. died September 14, 2001 in the Norlite Nursing Center. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, October 13, 2001 in Park Cemetery with Reverend Mark Engle officiating. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Madge L. Haapala
MCMILLAN -- Madge L. Haapala, 76, of McMillan, died Tuesday evening, October 9, 2001 at her residence under the loving care of her family and North Woods Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 12, 2001 at 11:00am at the Northstar Baptist Church with Pastor Paul Williams officiating. Interment will follow at the Columbus Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Thursday, October 11th from 5-8pm.

Mae E. Wretling
GWINN -- Mae E. (Walimaki) Wretling, 87, of 210 N. Ash St. Gwinn, died at 11:30 PM on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001 at her home with her family at her side.
Mrs. Wretling was born Oct. 15, 1913 in Gwinn and was a graduate of Gwinn High School, Class of 1932. She moved to Chicago, IL in 1932 where she met and married Hebert Wretling. She worked for many years in the accounting department of Motorola Radio. She returned to Gwinn following her retirement in 1973.
Mae was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Gwinn, and was a Sunday School teacher for 12 years, was a life member of the Gwinn V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, was an active member of the Gwinn Merry Mixers, was a member of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and served as the administrator of the Escort Service of Seniors to Doctors for 20 years, and served on the AMCAB Nutrition Council for 23 years.
Surviving are several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil & Sanna (Koski) Walimaki, her husband Herbert Wretling in 1986, 4 brothers; John & William Koski, Leo & Edward Walimaki.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, Gwinn. Rev. Nancy Kauppi will officiate and burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. Friends may call at Grace Lutheran Church from 1:00 PM until the time of services at 2:00 PM on Friday. The Gwinn V.F.W. Auxiliary will conduct memorial memorial rites at the church at 1:30 PM.

Milton Hakkarinen
Ishpeming- Milton Hakkarinen, Sr., 70, of Rte. 1, 4461 US 41 West, Lot 26, Kona Lane Trailer Park, passed away Wed. morning at his home under family care as well as UP Home Health Care and Hospice after a lengthy illness.
Milton was born Oct. 11, 1930 to the late Einar and Martha Hakkarinen. He was born in Ishpeming, and was a graduate of Redford High School in 1947 in Detroit. His faith is with the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee.
He worked for the Michigan State Highway Dept. for 5 years before starting with CCI. Milton began work at the Mather B, later being transferred to the Tilden Mine where he drove Haul trucks and retired after 39 years of service. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting and fishing as well as camping.
Milton is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Bonnie Emanuelson of Negaunee and Mrs. Jean (Robert) Lawrence of National Mine; 2 sons, Milton Hakkarinen Jr. of Marquette and Gary (Claudia) Hakkarinen of Green Bay, WI; a step-daughter, Mrs. Lori (Paul) Saari of Ishpeming; A sister, Mrs. Betty (Clyde) Mackinder; A brother, Paul (Cathy) Hakkarinen both from Aurora, Colorado; and a cousin, Mrs. Sally (Clyde) Pohlman of Ishpeming. Milton also left 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Patricia in 1999, grandaughter Molly Rae Hakkarinen, and step son Gary Spencer.
Arrangements are being handled by Racine Funeral Chapel of Ishpeming. At the request of Mr. Hakkarinen, there will be no visitation or service, with his burial in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to Rte. 1, 4661 US 41 West, Lot 26, Kona Lane, Ishpeming, MI 49849.
Bernice E. Hanson
MARQUETTE -- Bernice E. Hanson, 84, formerly of 1150 West Avenue, Marquette, entered
eternal life Wednesday afternoon, October 10, 2001, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where she had resided since April 1999.
Bernice was born November 19, 1916 in Iron River, a daughter of the late Gustaf and Mary (Anderson) Anderson. She was raised in Iron River, graduating from the Iron River High School in 1935. She attended nurse's training at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and in 1937 moved to Marquette. On May 3, 1939 she married Wilbur O. Hanson in Marquette.
Bernice was employed as a clerk at the Blue Link Party Store, the Shoe Bazaar, and Alexander's Party Store, later being employed at her husband's office at Pellow Roofing Company. She was an avid outdoorswoman who
enjoyed camping and fishing, as well as being active in square dancing and bowling.
Bernice was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marquette and the Richard Jopling American Legion Post Auxiliary of which she was a lifetime member and past president. A loving mother, proud grandmother, and sister, she is survived by: two daughters, Darlene (Thomas) Auld and Sandra (Paul) Laine both of Gwinn; a son, Rodney (Susan) Hanson of Marquette; her grandchildren, Tracey (Carl, Jr) Pellonpaa, Jerald (Tawni) Just, Randall Just, Michelle Hanson, Michael Hanson and June Hanson; great- grandchildren, Ryan Barry,
Christopher Just, Marissa Hanson, Jonathon Just, and Nicholas Just; a sister, Gertrude Prosen of Gwinn; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In
addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur, in 1990; and a sister, Marguerite Davison.
Friends may call at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 13, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held in the church on Saturday at 12 Noon with Rev. Ross Nicholson officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be made in the Northland Chapel Gardens. Donald L. "Curly" Swenor
MARQUETTE -- Donald L. "Curly" Swenor, 85, of 301 Genesee Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Wednesday afternoon, October 10, 2001, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans following a lengthy illness. He had been a resident at the Jacobetti Home for the past two years. Don was born September 30, 1916 in Marquette, a son of the late Charles and Matilda (Beaudette) Swenor, and was a lifelong Marquette resident. He served in the US Army during World War II and was involved in the campaigns and battles of Algeria French Morocco, Naples Foggia, Rome Arno, PO Valley, and Northern Apennines. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, European African, and Middle Eastern Service Medal with One Silver Service Star and Bronze Arrowhead, and was honorably discharged on September 1, 1945 with the rank of Tec 4. On April 3, 1948 he married Shirley M. Carlton in St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, and the couple began to establish their home and raise a family. Don was employed for over 30 years as a heavy equipment operator for the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad, retiring October 1, 1976. He was a member of St. Peter Cathedral, and a past member of the Richard Jopling Post #44 of the American Legion and the Marquette Moose Lodge # 1059. Don was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, playing and watching baseball. He also enjoyed a good game of cribbage and bowling. Don was very devoted to his family, and especially happy when spending time with his grandchildren. A loving husband, father, proud grandparent, and brother, he is survived by: his wife of 53 years, Shirley; his daughter, Cheryl Swenor of Marquette; three sons, Donald (Kathy) Swenor of Grand Rapids, Scott (Lauri Weesen) Swenor and Brian (Barb) Swenor both of Marquette; his five grandchildren, Michael, Adam, Abby, and Trevor Swenor, and Jessi Weesen; a sister, Lorraine (Clyde) Slater of Harvey; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Jason and Jessica Swenor; three sisters, Isabelle Berry, Helen Ellis, and Betty Swenor; and five brothers, Leonard, Alphonse, George, Edgar, and Charles Swenor Jr. Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday afternoon, October 13, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Thomas Ettolil officiating. Burial will be made in the Park Cemetery. Honorary escorts will be: Emery Dorow, Mike Parker, Bob Fletcher, Albert Piasecki, and Ray and Russ Berglund.
A reception for family and friends will follow services at the Marquette Moose Lodge. The family would like to express special appreciation to the administration and staff of the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans for the compassionate care Curly received while residing there. The attention, surroundings, and friendships helped to fill his life with quality time.
Arvid "Jackpine" Korpi
ISHPEMING -- Arvid "Jackpine" Korpi, age 85, of Rt. 1 Box 71, Deer Lake Rd. Ishpeming passed away, Thursday, October 11, 2001 at his home under the care of his loving family & U.P. Home Health & Hospice.
Arvid was born on June 19, 1916 to the late Hilda (Wiipola) and Matt Korpi. He served in the Air Force and in the Army during World War II, serving in Germany. He married Anna Knorr on September 23, 1943. Before the service, Arvid worked as a lumberjack. After returning from the war, he work at Cleveland Cliffs for 32 years, retiring in 1978.
Arvid was an avid reader and loved his sauna. Arvid had 23 years of enjoyable retirement, spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and former member of the Kiwanis Club and Ishpeming ELKS.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Anna; 6 children; Matt D. (Judy) Korpi of Rhinelander, WI, Deedra Springston of Milwaukee, WI, Paul (Debbie) Korpi of Ishpeming, John (Therese) Korpi of Ishpeming, Peter Korpi of Ishpeming and Luke (Sherry) Korpi of Seabuck, WA, 1 brother, Matt Jr. (Barbara) Korpi of Ishpeming, 3 sisters; Kaarina (William) Lucas of Ishpeming, Ellen (Dewey) Tippett of Ishpeming and Hilda (Leonard) Santti of Marquette, 18 grandchildren; Shelly, Jon Paul, Heather, Amy, Carly Shea, Katie, Hannah, Liisa, Heather, Jeffrey, Jeremiah, Abigail, Kaitlin, Benjamin, Emma, Michael, Daniel, and Michelle, 9 great grandchildren; Rae Anna, Tara, Justin, Michael, Jonathan, David, Renee, Jordan & Josh, several nieces & nephews. Arvid was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and 2 sisters.

SIDNAW -- Charles J. Longrie, Jr., age 74, of Sidnaw passed away on Thursday, October 11, 2001 at his home.
