Dorothy E. Brazeau

ESCANABA -- Dorothy E. Brazeau, age 83, of Escanaba passed away Thursday evening, October 11, 2001, at the Christian Park Health Care Center.

She was born in Cornell on December 19, 1917, the daughter of Fred and Ruby (Burr) Deiter.

Dorothy attended school in Flat Rock. She has lived in Cornell, Flat Rock, Newhall Location, The Chemical Plant Location (Gladstone) for 48 years, and for 4 years at Harbor Towers in Escanaba. She also spent time with her daughter Joan in Skandia. Dorothy enjoyed cooking, baking and being a good homemaker.

Dorothy E. Deiter married Leonard Brazeau on July 14, 1936 at St. Anne's Church in Escanaba. Leonard preceded her in death on April 4, 1989. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1986. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Wells, The Blue Army, St. Anthony's Ladies Guild, and 3rd Order or St. Francis.

Dorothy is survived by 2 Daughters: Joan (Lawrence) McNally of Skandia and Sister Theresa Ann Brazeau of Rockford, IL; Daughter-in-law: Lois Brazeau of Escanaba; 8 Grandchildren & 12 Great Grandchildren; 2 Sisters: Blanche (LeRoy) Lamberg of Gladstone and Bernice Sebeck of Escanaba; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Leonard; Son: Richard; Sisters: Irene, Beatrice and Violet; Brothers: Harold, Floyd and Clarence.

Visitation wil be held on Monday from 3 to 5:30 PM at The Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Rosary will be recited at 3 PM.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 6 PM at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Wells with Rev. Rick Schaeffer officiating.

Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery.

The family asks that memorials be made in Dorothy's name to The Delta County Cancer Alliance. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

George Roy

GWINN -- George Roy, 90, formerly of 42 E. Sands Street, Gwinn died Wednesday morning at the Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette.

Mr. Roy was born February 6, 1911 in Negaunee, a son of the late Delore & Emma (White) Roy and has been a lifelong resident of Marquette County.

On August 13, 1932 he married the former Delima Raby at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gwinn and together they had been married for more than 69 years.

Mr. Roy was employed in tbe mining industry. He retired from the Empire Mine in 1971 after 46 years of service for CCI. George was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, hunting and picking berries.

Mr. Roy is survived by his wife, Delima; children, Joyce (Victor) Bertucci of lshpeming and Wayne (Hazel) Roy of Gwinn; siblings, Norman (Barbara) Roy of Ishpeming, Gail (Howard) Davey of Negaunee, Lorraine Basolo of Negaunee, Betty (Walter) Wilson of South Lyon, MI and Mildred Gensheimer of Ondaga, MI; 13 grandchildren, 34 great- grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews. His parents and a brother, Raymond Roy preceded him in death.

Friends may call at the Gwinn Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 until 8 pm where a parish prayer service will be held at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 am in St. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Rev. Ronald Timmock officiating. Interment will be held in the Gwinn Cemetery.

Mr. Roy's grandsons, Thomas Roy, Michael Bertucci, Louis Bertucci and John Kohtala will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution may wish to consider the St. Anthony Catholic Church Building Fund.

Bernice N. Maunula
GWINN -- Bernice N. Maunula, 93, formerly of 180 N. Maple St. Gwinn died at 9:25 AM on Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 at the Norlite Nursing Center where she had resided for the past 8 years.

Bernice was born April 7, 1908 in Ishpeming to Charles & Anna (Forsberg) Nylander, attended Gwinn High School and was a life long Gwinn resident. She worked for the H.W. Gossard Co. in Gwinn for 7 years and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Maunula was an active member of the Gwinn United Methodist Church, the Allie Gilbert Circle, and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Gwinn Merry Mixers. Music was an important part of her life. She played the piano and was a part of a family band in her younger years.

Surviving are her son, Garwood (Florence) Maunula, Shelbyville, TN, her daughter, Judith (Robert) Larson, Gwinn, 3 grandchildren; Jon & Allen Larson, Gary Maunula, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arvid Maunula in 1971, 4 sister; Mildred, Ethel, Lillian, & Florence, 3 brothers; Carl, John, & Lawrence Nylander.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday at the Gwinn United Methodist Church with Rev. Jackie Roe officiating. Burial will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be; Garwood Maunula, Robert & John Larson, Thorval Hansen, Alden Trombly, & Joseph Mayrand. Friends may call at the Gwinn United Methodist Church from 11:00 AM until the time of services at 1:00 PM on Monday. Memorials may be directed to the Gwinn United Methodist Church and the Norlite Nursing Center Activity Fund in Bernice's memory.

Eva Johnston

CHICAGO, IL -- Eva Johnston, 98, beloved wife of the late Martin, loving mother of Donald (Phyllis), Bruce (Nancy) and Kenneth (Ilinca), grandmother of 10, great grandmother of 10, and cousin of Grace Dahl, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2001 at The Admiral Retirement Community in Chicago.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 27, 2001 at The Admiral Retirement Community, 909 W. Foster Ave., Chicago, IL 60640. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1500 W. Elmdale, Chicago, IL 60660-2494.

James B. Tasson

ISHPEMING -- James B. Tasson, age 84 of 763 Palms Ave. Ishpeming, passed away Saturday, October 13, 2001 at the Marquette General Hospital.

James was born July 19, 1917 in Ishpeming to the late Dominic & Marian (Ombrello) Tasson. He was a life long area resident. Jim worked for the C.C.I. Mining Company for 25 years at many of the local mines. He owned & operated Jim's 41 Shell service station in Ishpeming for 25 years.

Jim was a member of Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church, he was an avid sportsman, who enjoyed fishing & hunting. Jim supported & attended local sporting events.

Jim was a loving father & grandfather. Surviving are 4 children; V. James (Fay) Tasson of Ishpeming, Alan (Carolyn) Tasson of New Castle, IN, Ann Santee of Hackensack, NJ and Jean (Jeffrey) LePage of Ishpeming, 2 brothers Bernard (Betty) Tasson of Marquette and Rocco (Mary Jane) Tasson of Ishpeming, 3 sisters Elizabeth, Mary & Teresa Tasson all of Ishpeming, 13 grandchildren; Steven, Kevin & Loren Tasson, Amy Fredin, Alana Searl, Craig Tasson, Jana Niemi, Dara Flink, Jason Tasson, Kristen Butler, Evana Santee, Alyssa & Justin LePage, 10 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife A. Senora, brothers Dominic, Vito, Salvatore & Joseph Tasson and a sister Frances Tasson.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church in Negaunee with Rev. D. Michael Carriere & intern pastor Caleb Aho officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home Monday from 5:00- 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday at the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be Jim's grandsons. Honorary pallbearer will be Raymond Windahl.

Margaret "Abbey" Alholm

MARQUETTE -- Margaret Abigail "Abbey" Alholm, 92, of 1208 Second Street, Marquette, died early Saturday morning at the Norlite Nursing Center.

A lifelond resident of Marquette, Mrs. Alholm was born on October 24, 1908 to the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Dwyer) Dunleavy. She previously worked as an administrative assistant for Michigan State University Extension Service in Marquette for approximately 15 years.

In her retirement, Abbey volunteered at Marquette General Hospital for many years and was also involved with their blood pressure screening program. She enjoyed reading, going on rides with her caregivers, listening to music and playing the piano.

She is survived by her two sons, Richard J. (Karen) Alholm of Harvey and Tom Alholm of Dripping Springs, TX; two grandchildren, Wendy (Chris) Halverson of Royal Oak and Brenna Alholm of Harvey; one sister, Dossie Dunleavy of Marquette; a brother, Fr. Thomas Parnell Dunleavy of Escanaba; also several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband, Harold W. Alholm on September 10, 1972; also two brothers, Lowell "Percy" Dunleavy and Rev. Msgr. Joseph J. Dunleavy.

Abbey's family wishes to warmly acknowledge all her friends, caregivers and especially the staff at Norlite Nursing Center who provided outstanding care and comfort to Abbey in her last years.

Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick officiating. Interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ray DesJardins, Jim DesJardins, Tom Dunleavy, Sr., Tom Dunleavy, Jr., Carolyn Crowley and Tony Halla.

Robert J. Strengberg

GWINN -- Robert J. Strengberg, age 86, of 23 E. Sands St. Gwinn passed away Thursday, October 11, 2001 at the U.P. Home Health & Hospice's inpatient unit located at Bell Memorial Hospital.

Robert was born December 27, 1914 in Ishpeming to Robert & Teckla (Anderson) Strengberg. He was a life long area resident. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company as a chemist at the Research Lab, retiring in 1976, He enjoyed camping, fishing & hunting.

Robert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Merle (Pascoe) Strengberg, a daughter Sandra Lowe of Gwinn, 4 grandchildren Pamela (Bill) Rautio of Gwinn, Todd (Sandy) Dowrick of Lansing, Corey (Tracie) Dowrick of Little Lake and Rhett (Lisa) Lowe of Gwinn, 11 great grandchildren: Shannon (Brad) Parlato, Todd, Rebecca & Rachl Rautio, Amy, Brad, Megan, Dylan & Cole Dowrick, Jesse Santamore and Forest Lowe, a great grandson Traver Parlato, 4 nieces; Mary (Tom) Ellis, Nancy (Bob) Payan, Marsha (Max) Duelman and Kristin (Roger) Frahm. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dewey, Kenneth, Myron & Byron, sisters Myrtle Cox, Loretta Robare and Lucile Gordon.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Olson officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Friends may call the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Julian J. "Cud" VanOverloop

MARQUETTE -- Julian J. "Cud" VanOverloop, 79, formerly of 1949 Granite St., died Friday, October 12, 2001 in the Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had been a resident since July.

He was born July 15, 1922 in Marquette to Julian and Mary (Lewis) VanOverloop and had lived in this area all his life. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Navy. Prior to retiring he worked as a shipping clerk for Lake Shore. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and a former member of Marquette Lodge 101 Free & Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite Masons and Ahmed Temple Shrine.

Julian is survived by two daughters Cheryl ( Alan) Robillard of Forest Lake, MN, and Joan (Bruce) Koski of Midland, MI, two sons, James (Jeannie) VanOverloop of Marquette and Michael VanOverloop of White Bear, MN a step-son, Charles (Marcia) Gudegast of Marquette, a brother Harold of Marquette, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife Violet in 1977 and his second wife Louise in 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 17, 2001 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Charles West officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 12:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Rosemary P. Delmet

MARQUETTE - Rosemary P. Delmet, age 75 of 1000 W. Bluff St. Marquette entered the kingdom of God, Sunday, October 14, 2001 at the Eastwood Nursing Center after a one year, very courageous, battle with cancer.

Rosemary was born November 25, 1925 in Ishpeming to the late Richard & Mary (Roach) Champion. She worked for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company for several years.

Rosemary became a realtor in the early 70's. She joined Action Realty as one of their first salespeople. She followed George & Mary Hazeres to CoIdwell Banker in 1987 and worked there until 1990, when she joined 1st Realty Better Homes & Gardens. Shortly thereafter, Rosemary joined the Elder Agency until her illness caused her to retire in December of 2000. During her 30 years as a realtor, Rosemary always gave a housewarming gift to every family she sold a home to. She was loved by her clients, as well as her fellow co-workers.

Rosemary was a member of the Telephone Belles & St. Peter's Cathedral. She made a visit to church everyday.

Rosemary's favorite thing to do was spending time with her family. She treasured her time spent with her grandchildren, Ryan & Brooke, and attended every event they were involved in. She especially loved watching them perform in the Negaunee High School & Middle School Bands.

Rosemary also enjoyed going on bus trips, going to camp and visiting the casinos with her dear friends, Donna & Chuck Lundin. She also loved the family dog, "Rocky," who was very attached to her during her illness.

Rosemary will be dearly missed by her family and friends, but never forgotten. She leaves two children Julie (Gary) Lundin of Negaunee and Gregg (Cindy) Delmet of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren Ryan & Brooke Lundin, David & Jason Tatge, sister in law Connie Sandquist, 2 nephews & a niece. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years James Delmet, 1990 and a brother in law Fred Sandquist.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Negaunee with Fr. John Shiverski officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Friends may call at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Tuesday from 4:00p.m. until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be George Hazeres, Owen DeWitt, Paul Couture, Greg Voegtline, Jason Tatge & Charles Lundin.

Memorial considerations may be directed to the Ishpeming Cancer Society or the American Red Cross, September 11, Disaster Relief Fund.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.

Stanely G. Dane

MARQUETTE -- Stanley G. Dane, 73, of 1913 Wright Street, Marquette, died early Sunday morning at Marquette General Hospital where he had been hospitalized a short time.

Mr. Dane was born on July 7, 1928 in Leadwood, Missouri to the late John and Dolly Dane. He had lived in Marquette since 1984, moving here from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Stan worked as a dental technician with the United States Air Force retiring in 1966 with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.

He was a member and usher at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Marquette, a member of Monsignor Oliver J. O'Callaghan Council #649 Knights of Columbus and Fr. Leo Bossineau Assembly #509 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus both in Sault Ste Marie, life member of the Sault Ste. Marie Elks Lodge and the Christopher Columbus Society also of Sault Ste. Marie, was active with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and also volunteered in the medical records department at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in

Marquette. Stan was a proud former Master with Star of District 3, Hennepin Province, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Justine "Tina" Dane of Marquette whom he married on August 16, 1969; three children, Grant Matthew (Kelly) Dane of Sault Ste. Marie, Susan Marie Dane of Spokane, WA and Jennifer Lynn Dane of Marquette; also four grandchildren, Marlene, Dane, Matthew and Kendra.

Friends may call at the Canale- Tonella Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. where members of the Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a parish prayer service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at

11 a.m. in St. Christopher Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Lawrence Gauthier and the Rev. Fr. Guy Thoren concelebrating. Inurnment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Sault Ste. Marie.

Members of Bishop Baraga the Snowshoe Priest Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will act as pallbearers and will stand honor guard both at the funeral home and the church.

William M. (Bill) O'Connor

MARQUETTE -- William M. O'Connor, (Bill) of 315 E. Crescent Street, Marquette, died peacefully at home Sunday morning, October 14, 2001, after his second battle with cancer. He was 43 years old.

Bill was born on September 3, 1958 in Grand Ledge, Michigan. He attended Grand Ledge High School, where he excelled in wrestling and football. Following graduation, Bill attended Central Michigan University, but soon grew restless with school. In 1977 he took a job at the Fischer Body plant in Lansing, Michigan, and proceeded to save enough money to see the world. Over the next several years, Bill traveled extensively, wandering, working, and mixing with the people of Australia, China, the Far East, India and Europe. In 1985, he earned a degree in History, Philsophy, and International Studies from Northern Michigan University, and went on to pursue Graduate Studies in International Aide and Development at Stockholm University, before returning to the states in 1989 to get his teaching certificate from Nothern Michigan University. In 1994, Bill accepted a teaching position at Marquette Senior High School. He also served as the student council advisor, was an active member of the teacher's union, served on the Renaissance Committee, and as an advisor for Odyssey of the Mind. On July 26, 1996 Bill maried Kristina Barber.

Bill was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother and friend. He is sruvived by his wife, Kris, his daughter, Riley, and his sons Rory and Sean; his parents, Katie and Jack O'Conner of Grand Ledge, brother, Pat and sister-in-law Jackie of Victor, Idaho, nephews Will and Ryan of Laramie, Wyoming, and brother Jay O'Connor of Champaign, Ilinois; mother and father-in-law, Gary and Sandra Barber of Saginaw, and Marva and Robert Ittner of Skandia.

Bill was collector, and took great pleasure in "treasures" both rare, exotic, and beautiful. He was a certified diver, and accomplished sailor, and a man capable of holding and audience spellbound while he spun tales of adventure, hardship, and joy. He loved life and took great pleasure in watching it unfold.

Services will be officiated by the Reverend Doug Paterson at the Masonic Center, 128 W. Washington, Marquette, on Tuesday, October 16, at 4:00p.m. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to please direct memorials to: The William O'Connor Benefit Fund, First National Bank of Negaunee, 250 N. Catherine M. Ferguson
SHINGLETON/MUNISING -- Catherine M. Ferguson, age 76, of 815 W. Munising Avenue and formerly of Shingleton, died unexpectedly on Monday, October 15, 2001 at 10:17 a.m. at the Munising Memorial Hospital. She was born on March 30, 1925 to the late Frank and Lola (Cade) Tiernan in Munising. Catherine graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School. On November 4, 1942, she married David Erwin Ferguson in Detroit. They were married over fifty-four years before he preceded her in death on July 7, 1997. Catherine was a homemaker and in 1975, they moved back to Shingleton. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Eden Lutheran Church. Catherine and David were involved for many years with 4-H . They both enjoyed archery, and she was quite good at it. Catherine also enjoyed bowling, flower and vegetable gardening, canning, reading, and working on puzzles.

She is surived by her children - David Thomas Ferguson of Royal Oak, MI and Bonita Kaye Ferguson of Littleton, CO; grandchildren - Wendy Lynn Ferguson, David Edward Ferguson, Nicholas Dylan Ferguson, and Tracy Michel Hussett; greatgranddaughter - Casey Lynn Ferguson; sister-in-law - Jacqueline (Art) Kopietz of Utah; hrother-in-law - Fredrick (Irene) Ferguson of CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Pastors' Kurt V. and Mary Beth Kovanen will conduct the funeral at the Bowerman Funeral Chapel in Munising on Thursday, October 18, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
