Randy Scott Tossava

NEGAUNEE -- Randy Scott Tossava, age 44, of 453 Gold St., Apt. #1, Negaunee died on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, MN following a lengthy illness.

Randy was born June 17, 1956 in Ishpeming, attended the Negaunee Public Schools and was a life long area resident. He played in the Negaunee Pool League and was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish.

Surviving are his wife, Debra M. (Grawn), his daughter, Kelli, at home, his mother Margaret 'Mickey' (Jack) Winter, Negaunee, 2 sisters: Sandra (Dana) Laitinen, Sherman, TX, Candy (Robert) Barto, Sr., Gwinn, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews & cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Christine Thomas-Echelbarger, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee, officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.

The family will greet friends and relatives at the Negaunee Eagles Club following the memorial service.

Julian O. "Pete" Peterson
ISHPEMING -- Julian O. "Pete" Peterson, age 83, of 720 Spring St. Ishpeming & formerly of Menominee Falls, WI, died Friday, January 26, 2001, at Bell Memorial Hospital.

Pete was born February 10, 1917, in Deronda, WI to the late Christian & Christine (Larson) Peterson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Tech Sergeant weapons instructor.

Pete received an Agriculture Certificate from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. He enjoyed farm work, especially draft horses, stock car racing and was an avid fisherman.

Pete worked as a carpenter for the Menominee Falls Public School System for 20 years, retiring in 1979. He and his wife Dorothea, whom he married on December 24, 1938, has resided in Ishpeming for the past 1 1/2 years.

Pete is survived by his wife Dorothea of Ishpeming, two daughters: Julie (James) Mager of Ishpeming and Dona (Curt) Rupert of Aurora, CO; four grandchildren: Wayne (Pamela) Talo of Hagerman, ID, Christine (Noel) Aldridge of Kingsford, MI, Rachel (Steve) Lamberston of Negaunee and Julie Rupert of Aurora, CO; three great grandchildren: Kayla, Taylor and Joshua, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 13 brothers & sister.

A private funeral service will be held Sunday, January 28, 2001, at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. David Echelbarger officiating.

George Yelland

DAVISON, MI -- George Yelland, age 90, of Davison, formerly of Flint, died Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at Kith Haven. Cremation has taken place. Private services will be held. Those desiring, may make contributions to the American Diabetes Association, c/o Sharp Funeral & Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint, MI 48507.

Mr. Yelland was born in Negaunee, MI on February 12, 1910, the son of Richard and Elizabeth (Martin) Yelland. Surviving are his son, John and wife, Priscilla (Ginger) Yelland; daughter-in-law, Shirley Yelland; 4 grandchildren; 8 great- grandchildren; many friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary (Curtis) Yelland in 1986, and his second wife Ethel Yelland in 1994, also his son, Gordon Yelland in 2000, his parents and 6 brothers and 7 sisters.

Alice V. Groh

NEWBERRY -- Alice V. Groh, 76, of Newberry, died Thursday afternoon January 25, 2001 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 29, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor LaVonne Stephenson officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, January 28, 2001 from 4-7 p.m.

Marvin Warner Houghton

WAUTOMA, WI -- Marvin Warner Houghton, age 91, of Wautoma, WI, died Thursday, January 25, 2001 at the Heartland House, 668 W. Cummings Rd., Wautoma, WI 54982.

He was born Aug. 20, 1909 at Detroit, MI the son of Ruehl and Edith Smith Houghton.

Marvin attended Rice University in Houston, TX and graduated from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI. He had his own management and consulting company in Green Bay for 24 years. He was active in the 1st Methodist Church where he taught an adult Sunday School class, was on the boards of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Visiting Nurses Assoc. He served as chairman of the Brown County Ecumenical Council and he was a member of "Fish".

He retired in 1971 and moved to Mirror Lake in Florence County where he built a retirement home on his property. He lived there happily for 17 years before moving to Asheville, NC in 1991. He was active in Meals-on-Wheels and volunteering in the hospitals. He became a certified Graphoanalyst from the International Graphoanalysis Society of Chicago, IL. Also, he was a member of National Score (Service Corps of Retired Executives) as counselor and served as State Representative for one year.

Mr. Houghton was always active in churches he belonged to which included, St. Anne's Episcopal, DePere, Holy Trinity Episcopal, Iron Mountain, MI and All Saints Anglican of Arden, NC. He attended St. Mary's Chapel in Wautoma. His hobbies included wood carving for which he received awards and high praises, reading, deep philosophies, walking and enjoying the natural beauty of God's creation. He was a member of Rotary Clubs of Green Bay and Iron Mountain, MI.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Whitman McLean) Houghton, Wautoma; two children, Nancy Jane (Dick) Williams, Hackensack, MN and Douglas (Judy) Houghton, Wild Rose; seven grandchildren, ten great- grandchildren; two stepchildren, Trudy Ann (Henry) Miszkiewicz, Oxnard, CA, Willard Rogers McLean, Little Suamico, WI; seven step- grandchildren; 10 step great- grandchildren; two brothers, Frank W. and Paul C.; other relative and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Jane Walker Houghton; two sisters and one brother.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation or services. A Memorial has been established for Hospice/ Hope 114 N. Pearl St. Berlin, WI 54923. The Leikness Funeral Home of Wautoma is assisting the family with arrangements.

Walter U. Lahti
WICHITA, KANSAS -- Walter U. Lahti, 83, of Wichita, Kansas, formerly of Marquette, Michigan, passed away Friday, January 26, 2001 at the Life Care Center of Wichita, Kansas.

Surviving are his wife, Bernice Lahti of Wichita, Kansas; son, Jim Lahti of Ironwood, Michigan; daughters, Patricia Kohr of Santa Paula, California, Sonia Skaggs of Moses Lake, Washington, Linda Dautrich and Ani Lyn Mouland of Wichita, Kansas, along with14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Private family services will be held.

Jeanette M. Mattson

NEWBERRY -- Jeanette M, Mattson, 83, of Newberry, died Friday evening January 26, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Newberry with Fr. George Maki officiating Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Tuesday, January 30th, from 4-7 P.M. with prayers for the deceased to be recited at 6:00 P.M.

Taylor Rose Fritz

BATTLE CREEK, MI -- Taylor Rose Fritz, infant daughter of Robert D. and Debby (Kantola) Fritz of Bellevue, died at birth, January 24, 2001 at Bronson Methodist Hospital In Kalamazoo.

Surviving are her parents and brother, Anthony Trainor of Bellevue; maternal grandmother, Rosemary Kantola of Marquette; paternal grandparents, Douglas and Betsy Fritz of Manistique and paternal greatgrandparents, Robert and Rose Fritz of Battle Creek and paternal greatgrandfather, Julius (Bud) Siegert of Battle Creek.

She was preceded in death by her maternal great grandfather, Laurie E. Kantola.

A memorial service will take place at a later date. The Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellavue is assisting the family with arrangements.

Edwin A. DeRoche

MARQUETTE -- Edwin DeRoche, 75, of 425 Fisher Street, Marquette, died Monday afternoon at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided since September of 1996.

Mr. DeRoche was born November 6, 1925 at Gay, Michigan to Arthur O. and Maria (Greb) DeRoche. Edwin served during World War II with the United States Navy. He later worked at the former St. Luke's Hospital in Marquette as an an orderly for many years. He was a member of AMVETS as well as the American Legion.

Survivors include two daughters, June (Keith) Swanson of Marquette and Jo DeRoche of Washington, DC; his mother, Maria DeRoche of Laurium; one brother, Robert DeRoche of St. Paul MN; two sisters, Gretchen (Clarence) Laakonen of Calumet and Esther (Wayne) Nester of Neenah, WI; three grandchildren, Jasmine (Chris) Schmidt of Milwaukee, WI and Janet and Jason Swanson, both of Marquette; also surviving are several nieces and nephews. In addition to his family, Edwin leaves several special friends including the Morrison family of Gwinn, Charles and Jody Gray, Jon and Jennifer. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur DeRoche; an infant brother, Albert DeRoche; several aunts and uncles and his best friend, Edward Morrison.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans chapel with Rev. E.R. Crider of Calvary Church of Negaunee officiating. Burial will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.

Frances J. Takalo

BARAGA -- Frances J. Takalo, 77, of Baraga passed away at Marquette General Hospital Sunday, January 28, 2001. She was born in L'Anse to the late John and Mary (Connor) Thomas. She graduated from L'Anse High School in 1943 and was a lifetime resident of the area. On July 23, 1949, she married Arne Takalo at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga.

Frances was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga. She enjoyed farming and cooking for her family and friends and was well known for making Finnish cheese.

Mrs. Takalo is survived by her husband; son, Roger (Janet) Takalo of Pensacola, FL; daughters, Linda (Gary) Wadaga of Baraga and Barbara (Randy) Trudeau of Marquette; 5 grandchildren, Jason, Kendra, and Brandon Turunen, Rachel Takalo, and Gabrielle Trudeau; 2 great- grandchildren; sister, Pearl (William) Karkeek of Baraga and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by half- sisters, Gertrude Gerchow, Agnes Golden, Sadie Zilinsky, Marguaret Silbilski, and Dorothy Sayles; half-brothers, John and Adelore Chaudier.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 31 from St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga. Father George K. Joseph will be the Celebrant and Spring burial will take place in the Pelkie Cemetery. Friends may call at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse on Tuesday, January 30 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Parish prayers will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.

Matthew D. Piirainen

LANSING -- Matthew D. Piirainen, age 31, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2001. Matthew was born on May 29, 1969 in Lansing to Arne & Paulette (Holappa) Piirainen. He was a painter.

He was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church. He enjoyed camping and playing cards.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents. He is survived by his parents; Arne and Paulette Piirainen, his brother, Joseph Piirainen, his special friend and her children; Crystal Van Antwerp, Dale and Bethann Platte, one aunt, Helen (Robert) Saari, 3 uncles; John (Jean) Piirainen, Carl (Diane) Piirainen and Jacob Holappa, and numerous cousins.

Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 PM Wednesday at Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing, with services at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 1, 2001 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 2900 N. Waverly, Lansing, with Pastor Gary A. Bunge officiating. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to Reality Counseling Services for Alcohol and Substance Abuse or Mission Endowment Fund of St. Stephen Lutheran Church.

Richard G, Josephson

TRENARY -- Richard G. Josephson, 81, of 1071 Second Avenue, Trenary, entered eternal life Sunday afternoon, January 28, 2001, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette following a lengthy illness. He had been a resident at the Jacobetti facility since July 31. Richard was born August 7, 1919 in Winters, a son of the late Elof and Annie (Suomi) Josephson, and was raised in the Trenary area. In 1941 Richard entered the US Army, serving with Headquarters Company of the 11th Armored Division. He was involved in the battles and campaigns of the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe, serving with General Patton in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the American Defense Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, being honorably discharged with the rank of Technician 4th Grade. Following service, he and his father worked in the logging industry in the Copper Country for a time. Richard then moved to the Detroit area where he worked for General Motors as a line.
He was a worker in GM's Hydromatic Plant. On May 13, 1950 he married Eunice J. Ford in Novi and the couple began to establish their home and raise a family. Richard worked for General Motors for more than 30 years, retiring in 1979 as a forklift operator. The family continued to reside in Novi until 1987 when Richard and his wife returned to Trenary. A devoted husband, father, proud grandfather, and brother, he is survived by: his wife, Eunice J. Josephson of Trenary; two daughters, Grace Josephson of Ishpeming and Judith (Joe) Gieger of Irvine, KY; two sons, Roy (Linda) Josephson of Rochester Hills and Richard Josephson of Novi; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Willard (Georgie) Josephson of Trenary; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by a brother Arvid Josephson. No services will be scheduled. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.

Juleen Marie

LARGO -- Juleen Marie Herman, age 76, of Largo died January 29, 2001.

Mrs. Herman was born in Marquette, Michigan and moved to Largo from Fenton, MI in 1999. She was employed in retail sales. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Flint, MI and St. Catherine Catholic Church in Largo. She married Lawrence Herman in Flint, MI on November 23, 1946.

Juleen is survived by her husband, Lawrence Herman of Largo; Daughters, Sarah Satalich of North Hampton, MA, Shelly (Steve) Lund of Camp Hill, PA, Cindy (Greg) Sklar of Orwigsburg, PA; Daughter- in-law, Danielle Herman of Lansing, MI; Sisters, Romanye (Harold) Sneller of Cheboyan, MI and Lucille (Ken) Hammer of Bloomfield Hills, MI; Brothers, John (Sherrie) Rivard of Clio, MI; and 8 Grandchildren, Rachel, Lawrence (Joe), Amy, Alan, Marc, Meredith, Alexander and Alyssa.

She was preceded in death by her son, Lawrence J. Herman, Jr. and her parents, John & Cecelia Rivard.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Flint, MI.

A memorial fund will be set up in honor of Juleen.

Margaret "Margie" Rappert

NEWBERRY/MUNISING -- Margaret "Margie" Rappert, age 77, of the Hamilton House in Newberry and formerly of Munising, died on Sunday, January 28, 2001 at 6:20 a.m. at the Helen Newberry Joy Hospital. She was born on September 29, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Julius and Martha (Dombrowski) Rappert. Margie was raised in Cleveland and in 1935, she and her family moved to Munising, where she attended school. Margie was frail as a young child and became sick at the age of sixteen. She had been a resident of the Hamilton House in Newberry since 1995. She enjoyed looking through catalogs, watching television, and shopping- especially for her clothes.

She is survived by two sisters, Esther (Pat) St. Martin of Munising and Myrtle (Dick) St. Martin of Seney, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Margie was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Eugene Rappert, and a sister, Rose Montcalm.

Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. The funeral will be conducted in the funeral home chapel by Deacon James Anderson and intermenty will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.

Dorothy C. Johnson Oja
MARQUETTE -- Dorothy C. Johnson Oja, 88, of 1409 Kimber Avenue, Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday evening, January 30, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital where she had been a patient since Saturday. She had been in ill health for the past two years. Born November 1, 1912 in Marquette, a daughter of the late Henry L. and Agnes Mary (Morin) Gelina, she was raised in Marquette, and was a 1933 graduate of the Graveraet High School. On July 24, 1937 she married Jacob Victor Johnson in Marquette. During World War II, Dorothy lived in Detroit and worked for Cadillac Motors while her husband served in the military overseas. When the couple returned to Marquette, Dorothy was later employed with St. Luke's Hospital (now Marquette General Hospital) in the Dietary Department for over 15 years, prior to her retirement. On April 17, 1967 her husband, Jacob, preceded her in death. On January 24, 1970 she married George E. Oja. Throughout the years, Dorothy and George enjoyed wintering in Florida for many years, traveling worldwide, playing cribbage, swimming together at Northern Michigan University, and taking numerous walks around Presque Isle. Dorothy was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and Altar Society, and the VASA Lodge. With all her activity in retirement, Dorothy's greatest joy and pride centered around her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, and dear sister. Survivors include: her husband of 31 years, George E. Oja; her daughter, Arlene (Went) Slitor of Harvey; grandchildren, Michelle (William 'Ike') Slitor-Goodman of Xenia, OH and Sandra Renee (Mark) Kroll of Gaylord; great-grandchildren, Lauren McKenna Goodman and Anna Elise Goodman both of Xenia, OH; a sister, Orzalie Gelina Stone of Livonia; sisters-in-law, Pauline Miller of Manistique, Hilma Biederstadt of Vero Beach, FL, and Frances Oja of Ishpeming; brothers-in-law, Ralph (Viola) Oja of Ishpeming and Paul (Pat) Johnson of Skandia; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and first husband, Dorothy was also preceded in death by several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Friday from 5 to 8 pm. A parish prayer service, led by Rev. Basil Goerner, will be held at 7 pm Friday evening in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday afternoon, February 3, at 1 pm in St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Guy Thoren, as celebrant. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Escorts will be Mark Kroll, William 'Ike' Goodman, Ralph Oja, Gerald Stone, Ronald Stone, Donald Zaborowski, George Karageorge, and Charles Peltola.

Donna J. Bosley

GWINN -- Donna J. Bosley, 65, of 93 E. Sands, Gwinn, died Monday morning at Marquette General Hospital.

Mrs. Bosley was born on March 19, 1935, in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, a daughter of the late Miles & Thelma (Hill) Rath. On October 5, 1957 she married Carl Bosley in Sault Ste. Marie.

Donna was a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marquette. She enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, crafting greeting cards and writing poetry.

Mrs. Bosley is survived by her husband, Carl of Gwinn; a daughter, Deborah (Richard) Neff of Milwaukee; a son, Timothy (Eileen) Bosley of Saginaw; a granddaughter, Tonya Langoyis; a brother, Richard (Ollie) Rath of South Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins. Two sisters, Joanne and Gloria preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Marquette on Friday at 12 noon with the Rev. Andrew Martens officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 am until the time of the service. Interment will be held in Forsyth Township Cemetery.
