Bennett Jon Peterson
IRON MOUNTAIN -- Bennett Jon Peterson went to Heaven on Friday, October 26 due to a tragic automobile accident.

Ben was born in Los Angeles, California on November 19, 1965 to his loving parents, Bruce Clifford and Karol Lautner Peterson. He was raised in Deertrack Village, Marquette when his family moved back in 1968 to run it. Ben was fortunate to grow up in this beautiful wooded setting where he learned to cherish and respect the land and traditions of his family. Deertrack will always be home for Ben.

When he was a young boy until his teenage years, he traveled across the U.P. accompanied by Grandma Mary and his mother Karol for BMX racing tournaments. The trusty Volkswagen Vanagon has seen a lot of U.P. miles. Grandma Mary used to have Hot Wheels and slot car races for Ben and his friends which produced a lifelong love for collecting Hot Wheels cars.

Ben graduated from NMU in 1988 and worked as a Land Surveyor for Glenn VanNest of Marquette for many years. He moved to Iron Mountain in 1994 and married Tina Marie Anders. He was currently working for Bob Perkins of Perkins Surveying in Iron Mountain.

Ben was an incredibly intelligent person with a yearning to be challenged and to learn. He was a gifted artist and musician. Nobody could play a blues riff like Ben. He had the distinction of never using a pick with his guitar and his talent was immeasurable. There was always a guitar by his side and a melody playing; usually one he had written himself. His beloved father Bruce taught him to play the guitar and a wicked game of chess. Karol was Ben's biggest fan at anything he ever did, and anything he tried, he did well.

Ben was a passionate golfer and, much to the dismay of his friends, could outplay them with a set of mismatched, old and dented clubs. Ben was many things to many people and leaves behind multitudes of close friends; but above all else, he was so very much loved.

Ben leaves behind his wife, Tina; his beloved children, Bryce and stepdaughter Jessica of Iron Mountain; his parents, Clifford Bruce and Karol Lautner Peterson of Marquette; his brother, Steven, also of Marquette; his aunts Catherine Springer, Mary "Bitty" Lautner, Abby Salo and Judith Lautner; uncles Michael Lautner, Christopher deRoche and their respective families all on his mother's side. On his father's side, he leaves his aunts Pamela Edmonds, Judy Gaspar and Harriet Haines; his grandfather, Ron Plotezka, and their respective families.

Bennett was preceded in death by his uncle, Brian Peterson; his maternal grandmother Mary "Marybud" deRoche and maternal grandfather architect John Lautner; paternal grandmother Marion Peterson Plotezka and paternal grandfather Russel Peterson; and a very special cousin, Johnny deRoche.

We believe that God will take good care of Ben and that somehow God must have needed him enough to take him away. We will cling to the cherished memories of this talented and unique man to help us through our overwhelming grief. We will see Ben live on in ourselves and in his precious son, Bryce. Ben, I know you are driving a Porche 911 now.

There will be a service celebrating Bennett's life at the First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at 6:00pm with Reverend David Mair officiating. Following the service there will be fellowship and refreshments in the church. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, an education trust fund has been set up for the children.
