Marvin E. Almstadt

NEWBERRY -- Marvin E. Almstadt, 65, of McMillan, died Saturday, October 27, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.

Born August 13, 1936 in Mt. Clemens, son of the Lester & Margaret (Stuver) Almstadt, Marvin was employed with the Metro Parks System retiring as a Maintenance Supervisor after 43 years of service. Following retirement, Marvin moved to the Upper Peninsula in 1997 and resided in the McMillan area. An avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing, Marvin was a member of the Tahquamenon Sportsmans Club, the U.P. Bear Houndsman Association, the Georgia to Ed Louis and Eugenia (Greene) Glenn. He served with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam.

A Marquette resident since 1981, Nelson formerly worked construction jobs until becoming disabled in 1990. He then diligently cared for his wife and family. He married the former Susan Marie Worth in Marquette on March 12, 1996. Nelson enjoyed gardening and participating in all sports. He also enjoyed playing cards.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan, of Marquette; 12 children, Alice and Aaron (fiancee Gwen), both of Marquette; Logan, Alena, Denaige, Aleya Lei and Dukey, all at home; Shireen, Amadeus and Jerel of Marquette; Andre of Pittsburgh, PA and Tina of Milledgeville, GA; two grandchildren, Timothy and Racel Porter; his mother, Eugenia Wilson of Milledgeville, GA; mother-in-law, Marlene Worth of Champion, MI; three brothers, Douglas (Charlotte) Glenn of Houston, South Carolina, Mary (Bill) Steve of Detroit, Eugene (Sandy) Worth of Ishpeming, Albert "Bubba" (Myrna) Worth of Champion and Connie (Edward) BGrantling of Ishpeming; also surviving are many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Nelson was preceded in death by his father, Ed Louis Glenn and one son, Nelson "Tre" Glenn.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Canale- Tonella Funeral Home with Chaplain Leon Jarvis of Marquette General Hospital officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Saturday.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Rosalind A. "Rizz" DeCook

NEWBERRY -- Rosalind A. "Rizz" DeCook, 92, of Newberry, died Sunday, October 28, 2001 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital three days after suffering a severe stroke. Right up to her final illness, she had been very active in baking goodies for neighborhood kids (or anyone else who stopped by), enjoying the company of her friends, and conversing by e-mail with her far flung family. Rizz really liked people, kids, and animals and they really liked her back. Her sense of humor was kind of infectious.

Born July 23, 1909 in Marquette, daughter of the late Karl & Agnes (Cameron) Giesregen, she graduated from Marquette High School and then graduated with a college degree in teaching in 1930 for what is now Northern New York to the late Charles and Dora (Evener) Kent. Betty was raised in New York she worked at the Jackson & Perkins Flower Company, the Corslet Company, and the Tennis Company. She and Clarence returned to Michigan (AuTrain Township) to the late Erick and Ida (nee Hjelm) Nybeck. He attended school at Ridge through the eighth grade. Roy worked on the family farm and at the Forest Service until April 1944 when he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theater from 1945 until 1946 and was involved with battles and campaigns in Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was discharged from the Army in April 1946. Roy worked for the Munising Paper Mill and then retired from Kimberly Clark in March 1977 after thirty years of service. During his employment at the mill, Roy was the head fireman in the Power House. On October 14, 1950, he had married Patricia D. McDowell. Roy was a charter member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Over the years, he served on various church boards and was president of the Central School P.T.A. for one year. Roy enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, carpentry, and bird hunting.

He is survived by his wife of over fifty-one years, Pat of Munising; their four children - Lynne (Tom) Wilhelm of Appleton, Iowa, Kristine (Mark) Riley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Paul (Judy) Nybeck

of Oklahoma; seven grandchildren - Eric, Elizabeth, & Joel Nybeck, Lauren & Christopher Riley, and Elaine & Karen Nybeck. Besides his parents, Roy was preceded in death by brothers, Evald, Arvid, Hilding, and two infant brothers and a sister, Hilma Cowell.

Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. Deacon John Weber will conduct the funeral service on Thursday, November 1, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. Roy will be escorted by Gerry Nadeau, Joe Lakosky, Scott Lakosky, David Cowell, George Cowell, and Ronald Polomski.

Arlene E. Gaspar
MARQUETTE -- Arlene E. Gaspar, 92, formerly of 234 W. Michigan University) in 1930, later teaching in the Stambaugh and then the Iron Mountain school systems for a time. Arlene was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Forresters. She greatly enjoyed playing Bridge. Arlene is survived by her son, John R. (Valerie) Gaspar of Fort Wayne, IN; her grandchildren, David (Della) Gaspar and children, David, Destiny, and Dillon of Augusta, GA; Danny (Christina) Gaspar and son, Daniel of Fort Wayne, IN, and Pamela Gaspar of Fort Wayne, IN; a niece, Lorraine Ann Morrison of Gooding, ID. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Gaspar in 1979; two sisters, Lorraine White and Anna Cordy; and a brother, Rev. Robert Cordy. Friends may call at St. Michael Catholic Church on Friday, November 2, beginning at 1:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m.

Friday afternoon in the church with Rev. John Shiverski, as celebrant. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow in St. Michael Parish Center. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.

Clifford "Skip" Alongo

ISHPEMING -- Clifford "Skip" Alongo, 72 of 1745 North Lake Drive, Ishpeming, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at home. He was in ill health for the past six months.

He was born in Negaunee on May 1,1929 to the late Victor and Jenny (Bond) Alongo. Clifford was a life long resident of the area. He retired from Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. in 1996 after 42 years of service. He also owned Skip's Body Shop in Ishpeming.

Surviving are his wife, Gail, three sons: C. James (Joan) Alongo of Ishpeming, Steve (Beth) Alongo of Ishpeming, and Dale Alongo of Ishpeming, three daughters: Susan (Mike Ketola) Emanuelson of Ishpeming, Debbie Megan of Brimfield, Michigan on February 16, 1920. Complete arrangements will be announced by the Bowerman Funeral Home.

Janet Kay Wells

SAROSOTA, FL -- Janet Kay Wells, 41, of Sarosota, FL, entered eternal life on October 24, 2001. She passed away peacefully in the Sarasota Hospice House of Southwest Michigan, May 30, 1960, Ms. Wells came to Michigan and was a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Jan had formerly worked as a Tax Manager for Ernst & Young, L.L.P. in St. Petersburg.

Jan was affiliated with many organizations in Sarasota which include Chapter Founder, 2001 Board Member and Leadership Chairman with the Executive Women's Golf Association; member of the Executive Board of Directors and Treasurer with the Women's Resource Center of Manatee, Inc.; member of the Board of Directors with the American Cancer Society, Manatee County Unit and the New College Library Association; member of the Sarasota Manatee International Trade Club and the Sarasota Reading Festival; member and 1994 graduate of the Leadership Manatee Alumni Association, Inc.

Survivors include her mother and step-father, Margaret A. and Perry E. Jeanson of Marquette and a brother and sister-in-law, William K. and Carol J. Peterson of Harrison Township, NC and Chris Erick Stevens of Calabasas, CA; a brother Gene (Florence) Birchler of Appleton, WI; 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Larry Viall in 1996, a sister Lucille Seidler and a brother Robert Birchler.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Peter Oberto to officiate.

The family will greet friends from 10:00 am until the time of services on Saturday at the Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marquette Co. Alzheimer's Association or the Lake Superior Hospice.

The Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sally Ann Ayotte

GWINN -- Sally Ann Ayotte, age 58 of 508 Mitchell St., Gwinn passed away Monday, October 29, 2001 at her home.

Sally was born February 2, 1943 in Ishpeming to the late Karl & Essie (Cain) Dahl. She graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1961.

Sally worked for the H.W. Gossard Company, then she went on to work as a nurses aide at the Mather Nursing Home & for U.P. Home Health.

Sally was a life long area resident, residing in Gwinn for the past 6 years. She attended the Sawyer Free Will Baptist Church. Sally enjoyed spending time at her computer, especially digital photography. She played the organ & enjoyed card playing.

Sally is survived by her husband, whom she married July 22, 1972, Wilfred Ayotte, 2 sons; Jon Dahl of Westland, MI & Brian Ayotte of Gwinn, 3 step children; Wilfred Ayotte of Massachusetts. He was a retired Insurance Agent with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and worked for Publix for 10 years. He also served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Al is a recipient of the Bronze Star, a Pearl Harbor survivor, member of the American Legion, Elks & Holy Name Society. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church. He moved to Manatee County Florida in 1985.

Al is survived by his companion: Loraine Taylot of Bradenton; 2 Daughters: Sue Tremblay of Haverhill, MA & Peg Pietrowski of Hudson, NH; 2 Sisters, Rita Belleville of Haverhill, MA & Sister Claire Cartier of Lanham, Maryland; 2 Brothers: Gilbert Cartier of Amesbury, MA & Phillip Cartier of Haverhill, MA; 3 Grandchildren & 2 Great Grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass was held on October 15 at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church. Memorial contributions can be made to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, 833 Magellan Dr., Sarasota, FL 34243.

The Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Manasota Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
