Marvin E. Almstadt
NEWBERRY -- Marvin E. Almstadt, 65, of McMillan, died Saturday, October 27, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.
Born August 13, 1936 in Mt. Clemens, son of the Lester & Margaret (Stuver) Almstadt, Marvin was employed with the Metro Parks System retiring as a Maintenance Supervisor after 43 years of service. Following retirement, Marvin moved to the Upper Peninsula in 1997 and resided in the McMillan area. An avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing, Marvin was a member of the Tahquamenon Sportsmans Club, the U.P. Bear Houndsman Association, the Michigan United Conservation Club, the National Rifle Association and the Newberry Elks Club. Marvin served in the United State Navy from 1956 until his honorable discharge in 1957.
Marvin is preceded in death by his mother Margaret. Survivors include his wife Roberta "Bobbie" of McMillan; his father Lester Almstadt of Mt. Clemens; children Cindy Almstadt of Rochester Hills and Brian Almstadt of Memphis, MI; step-sons Robert (Shannon) Emerick of Romeo and Michael (Lisa) Emerick of Troy; eight grandchildren; sister Marlene Almstadt.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor David Buhman of the Bethel Community Church in Newberry officiating. Interment will follow at Columbus Township Cemetery in McMillan. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 30th from 4-7 pm.

Mrs. Frances Sylvia Hofbauer
REPUBLIC -- Mrs. Frances Sylvia Hofbauer, age 89, of Republic, passed away Friday morning at Marquette General Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident Thursday in Ishpeming.
Born September 7, 1912 in Republic the daughter of William and Hilma Mattila, she was a graduate of Republic High School class of 1930. She moved to Chicago and married Mr. James Hofbauer where they resided for 17 years. Moving back to Republic, they founded Republic Memorials, which they operated until their retirement in 1979. Mrs. Hofbauer was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Republic and was active in the Quilting Circle at the church. She was known to be very devoted to her church and family.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Richard (Joanne) Yunker of Ringle, WI and Mrs. Sandra Fuller of Madison, WI; 2 sons, James Hofbauer of Republic and Joel Hofbauer of Minneapolis, MN; 6 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild, and expecting another great grandchild in December; 1 sister, Mrs. Richard (Phyllis) Czimer of Republic; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sr. in June of 2000; 3 sisters, Ersie Mattila, Joyce Mattila and Florence Dowd; and 1 brother, Alger Mattila.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 2 at 11 AM. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic with Rev. Lauri Maki officiating. Burial will be in the Republic Cemetery. The Racine Funeral Chapel of Ishpeming is in charge of arrangements.
Nelson Glenn
MARQUETTE -- Nelson Emory Glenn, 50, of 2522 Werner Street, Marquette, died Friday afternoon, October 26, 2001 at his home.
Mr. Glenn was born November 20, 1950 in Milledgeville, Georgia to Ed Louis and Eugenia (Greene) Glenn. He served with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam.
A Marquette resident since 1981, Nelson formerly worked construction jobs until becoming disabled in 1990. He then diligently cared for his wife and family. He married the former Susan Marie Worth in Marquette on March 12, 1996. Nelson enjoyed gardening and participating in all sports. He also enjoyed playing cards.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan, of Marquette; 12 children, Alice and Aaron (fiancee Gwen), both of Marquette; Logan, Alena, Denaige, Aleya Lei and Dukey, all at home; Shireen, Amadeus and Jerel of Marquette; Andre of Pittsburgh, PA and Tina of Milledgeville, GA; two grandchildren, Timothy and Racel Porter; his mother, Eugenia Wilson of Milledgeville, GA; mother-in-law, Marlene Worth of Champion, MI; three brothers, Douglas (Charlotte) Glenn of Houston, TX, Sam Tolbert of Milledgeville, GA and Perry Glenn of Atlanta, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael (Ramona) Worth of South Carolina, Mary (Bill) Steve of Detroit, Eugene (Sandy) Worth of Ishpeming, Albert "Bubba" (Myrna) Worth of Champion and Connie (Edward) BGrantling of Ishpeming; also surviving are many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Nelson was preceded in death by his father, Ed Louis Glenn and one son, Nelson "Tre" Glenn.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Canale- Tonella Funeral Home with Chaplain Leon Jarvis of Marquette General Hospital officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Saturday.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
Rosalind A. "Rizz" DeCook
NEWBERRY -- Rosalind A. "Rizz" DeCook, 92, of Newberry, died Sunday, October 28, 2001 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital three days after suffering a severe stroke. Right up to her final illness, she had been very active in baking goodies for neighborhood kids (or anyone else who stopped by), enjoying the company of her friends, and conversing by e-mail with her far flung family. Rizz really liked people, kids, and animals and they really liked her back. Her sense of humor was kind of infectious.
Born July 23, 1909 in Marquette, daughter of the late Karl & Agnes (Cameron) Giesregen, she graduated from Marquette High School and then graduated with a college degree in teaching in 1930 for what is now Northern Michigan University. She moved to Newberry in 1931 with her husband, Joe, who was starting a career in teaching and coaching. The couple spent their entire lives in Newberry, where they raised a family and served the community through teaching and administration in the Newberry Public School system. Her teaching career spanned 25 years, retiring in 1969. This year marked her 70th year as a resident of the Newberry area.
Rizz is preceded in death by her husband, Joe, in 1985, ad by her two sisters, Bertha Mukkala and Jean Wittler, both of Marquette. She is survived by her daughter Jean McMahon of Marquette and son Dr. Joe (Joyce) DeCook of Fennville. She also leaves six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; three nieces and nephews.
Rather than formal funeral arrangements, Rizzie requested to be remembered by a gathering of her family, friends, old students and other acquaintances for a time of sharing memories, some music and light refreshments. This get-together will take place on Saturday, November 3, 2001 from 2-4 pm at the First Baptist Church Reed Hall in Newberry. The gathering will be informal and you may come and go as your schedule allows.

Betty D. Reeves
FOREST LAKE -- Betty D. Reeves, age 77, of E5429 State Highway M-94, Forest Lake, died on Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at 1:30 a.m. at Marquette General Hospital. She was born on June 2, 1924 in Smithboro, New York to the late Charles and Dora (Evener) Kent. Betty was raised in New York and on December 20, 1942, she married Clarence Reeves there. She was a homemaker and while living in New York she worked at the Jackson & Perkins Flower Company, the Corslet Company, and the Tennis Company. She and Clarence returned to Michigan and had lived in Allenton, Shingleton, and then Forest Lake. Clarence preceded Betty in death on February 8, 1997. Betty enjoyed fishing and crocheting. She absolutely loved to berry pick.
Betty is survived by her children- Gerald (Janice) Reeves of Munising, Barbara Brand of Forest Lake, Charles (Patricia) Reeves of Capac, MI, and Cynthia LaRose of Munising; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother- Charles Kent; sisters- Genevieve (Rick) Cornish, Jane Evener, and Charlotte Wright; and numerous nieces and newphews. Betty was also preceded in death by brothers, Lloyd and Robert Kent, and by a sister, Shirley.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Pastor Robert Tripp will conduct the funeral in the funeral home's chapel on Thursday, November 1, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary.
Emmer Roy Nybeck
MUNISING -- Emmer Roy Nybeck, age 87, of 413 E. Varnum Street, Munising, died on Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at 4:26 a.m. at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. Roy was born onJune 15, 1914 in Ridge, Michigan (AuTrain Township) to the late Erick and Ida (nee Hjelm) Nybeck. He attended school at Ridge through the eighth grade. Roy worked on the family farm and at the Forest Service until April 1944 when he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theater from 1945 until 1946 and was involved with battles and campaigns in Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was discharged from the Army in April 1946. Roy worked for the Munising Paper Mill and then retired from Kimberly Clark in March 1977 after thirty years of service. During his employment at the mill, Roy was the head fireman in the Power House. On October 14, 1950, he had married Patricia D. McDowell. Roy was a charter member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Over the years, he served on various church boards and was president of the Central School P.T.A. for one year. Roy enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening, carpentry, and bird hunting.
He is survived by his wife of over fifty-one years, Pat of Munising; their four children - Lynne (Tom) Wilhelm of Appleton, Wisconsin, William ( N ichi ) Nybeck of Dubuqe, Iowa, Kristine (Mark) Riley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Paul (Judy) Nybeck
of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren - Eric, Elizabeth, & Joel Nybeck, Lauren & Christopher Riley, and Elaine & Karen Nybeck. Besides his parents, Roy was preceded in death by brothers, Evald, Arvid, Hilding, and two infant brothers and a sister, Hilma Cowell.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. Deacon John Weber will conduct the funeral service on Thursday, November 1, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. Roy will be escorted by Gerry Nadeau, Joe Lakosky, Scott Lakosky, David Cowell, George Cowell, and Ronald Polomski.
Arlene E. Gaspar
MARQUETTE -- Arlene E. Gaspar, 92, formerly of 234 W. Michigan Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Monday evening, October 29, 2001, at the Bishop Noa Home for Senior Citizens in Escanaba. Arlene was born May 26, 1909 in Iron Mountain, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Becker) Cordy and was raised in the Iron Mountain area. She graduated from Northern State Teachers College (now Northern Michigan University) in 1930, later teaching in the Stambaugh and then the Iron Mountain school systems for a time. Arlene was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Forresters. She greatly enjoyed playing Bridge. Arlene is survived by her son, John R. (Valerie) Gaspar of Fort Wayne, IN; her grandchildren, David (Della) Gaspar and children, David, Destiny, and Dillon of Augusta, GA; Danny (Christina) Gaspar and son, Daniel of Fort Wayne, IN, and Pamela Gaspar of Fort Wayne, IN; a niece, Lorraine Ann Morrison of Gooding, ID. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Gaspar in 1979; two sisters, Lorraine White and Anna Cordy; and a brother, Rev. Robert Cordy. Friends may call at St. Michael Catholic Church on Friday, November 2, beginning at 1:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m.
Friday afternoon in the church with Rev. John Shiverski, as celebrant. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow in St. Michael Parish Center. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.
Clifford "Skip" Alongo
ISHPEMING -- Clifford "Skip" Alongo, 72 of 1745 North Lake Drive, Ishpeming, died Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at home. He was in ill health for the past six months.
He was born in Negaunee on May 1,1929 to the late Victor and Jenny (Bond) Alongo. Clifford was a life long resident of the area. He retired from Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. in 1996 after 42 years of service. He also owned Skip's Body Shop in Ishpeming.
Surviving are his wife, Gail, three sons: C. James (Joan) Alongo of Ishpeming, Steve (Beth) Alongo of Ishpeming, and Dale Alongo of Ishpeming, three daughters: Susan (Mike Ketola) Emanuelson of Ishpeming, Debbie Megan of Brimfield, Illinois and Denise (Rady) Jones of Claremore, OK, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jane, and two sons, Richard and Jeff, granddaughter Janie Sue Emanuelson and step brother William A. Larson.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 3, 2001 at 5:00 pm at the Perala Funeral Home with his son C. James Alongo officiating. Friends may cll at the funeral home from 2:00 until 5:00 on Saturday. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons; Gary Emanuelson, Dale Alongo Jr. John Megan, Shawn LaMora, Mark Megan, and James Alongo. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.

MUNISING -- Ellen Scott, 81, of 200 W. City Park Drive, Munising died at 7:00PM on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at the Munising Tendercare Health Facility. She was born in Sanilac County, Michigan on February 16, 1920. Complete arrangements will be announced by the Bowerman Funeral Home.
Janet Kay Wells
SAROSOTA, FL -- Janet Kay Wells, 41, of Sarosota, FL, entered eternal life on October 24, 2001. She passed away peacefully in the Sarasota Hospice House of Southwest Florida with the comfort of her loving family at her side.
Born in Marquette, Michigan, May 30, 1960, Ms. Wells came to Florida in 1984. Jan was a partner in the accounting firm of Christopher, Smith, Leonard, Bristow, Stanell and Wells, CPA's. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan and was a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Florida. She was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Jan had formerly worked as a Tax Manager for Ernst & Young, L.L.P. in St. Petersburg.
Jan was affiliated with many organizations in Sarasota which include Chapter Founder, 2001 Board Member and Leadership Chairman with the Executive Women's Golf Association; member of the Executive Board of Directors and Treasurer with the Women's Resource Center of Manatee, Inc.; member of the Board of Directors with the American Cancer Society, Manatee County Unit and the New College Library Association; member of the Sarasota Manatee International Trade Club and the Sarasota Reading Festival; member and 1994 graduate of the Leadership Manatee Alumni Association, Inc.
Survivors include her mother and step-father, Margaret A. and Perry E. Jeanson of Marquette and a brother and sister-in-law, William K. and Carol J. Peterson of Harrison Township, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her father, Karl G. Peterson.
A Memorial Service was held at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, Sarasota, FL on October 30th with the Reverend Carl Birarelli officiating. Margaret Rose Peterson
ISHPEMING -- Margaret Rose Peterson, age 87 formerly of 601 N. Lake St. Ishpeming, passed away, Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where she had resided since 1996.
Margaret was born January 2, 1914 in Negaunee the daughter of John and Martha (Montieth) Treloar. She was a graduate of the Negaunee High School, Class of 1932 and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was part of the Mary Circle and was also a member of the Rebecah Lodge.
Survivors include three daughters- Carole (Jack) Williams of Ishpeming, Ellen Owens of Saginaw, and Susan (Dennis) Baratono of Ovid; a son John Peterson of Marquette; 9 grandchildren- Mark LaFave, Sheri (Chris) Pasanen, Kurt Williams, Chris Baratono, Pat Baratono, Danielle Baratono, Jay (Sheri) Peterson, Robin Owens, and Lauren (Jason) Reese; 4 great grandchildren whom she dearly loved- Nicole, Elena, Scotti and LeeAnn; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Peterson in 1992, a brother Jack Treloar and 2 sisters- Florence Hocking and Lorena Anderson.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, November 2, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Kordish to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

ISHPEMING -- Martha Lahti, age 93 of 741 Park St., Ishpeming, died Thursday November 1, 2001 at the U.P. Home Health & Hospice inpatient unit of the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home of Ishpeming.
Mary J. Viall
ISHPEMING -- Mary L. Viall, age 87, formerly of 223 W. Barnum St., Ishpeming passed away Friday, October 26, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility.
Mary was born July 5, 1914 in Wauwatosa, WI to the late Emil and Louise (Boden) Birchler. She graduated from high school in the Milwaukee, WI area. She moved to this area in the late 1930's, working for many years as the office manager for the Viall Insurance Agency. Mary was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, where she had been involved in many church activities. She also did volunteer work with the local Hospice agency in the early 1970's.
Survivors include a daughter- Nancy (Dan) Hill of Spencer, WI; two sons- Michael (Jean) Viall of Greensboro, NC and Chris Erick Stevens of Calabasas, CA; a brother Gene (Florence) Birchler of Appleton, WI; 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Larry Viall in 1996, a sister Lucille Seidler and a brother Robert Birchler.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Peter Oberto to officiate.
The family will greet friends from 10:00 am until the time of services on Saturday at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marquette Co. Alzheimer's Association or the Lake Superior Hospice.

Sally Ann Ayotte
GWINN -- Sally Ann Ayotte, age 58 of 508 Mitchell St., Gwinn passed away Monday, October 29, 2001 at her home.
Sally was born February 2, 1943 in Ishpeming to the late Karl & Essie (Cain) Dahl. She graduated from Ishpeming High School, Class of 1961.
Sally worked for the H.W. Gossard Company, then she went on to work as a nurses aide at the Mather Nursing Home & for U.P. Home Health.
Sally was a life long area resident, residing in Gwinn for the past 6 years. She attended the Sawyer Free Will Baptist Church. Sally enjoyed spending time at her computer, especially digital photography. She played the organ & enjoyed card playing.
Sally is survived by her husband, whom she married July 22, 1972, Wilfred Ayotte, 2 sons; Jon Dahl of Westland, MI & Brian Ayotte of Gwinn, 3 step children; Wilfred Ayotte of Wisconsin, a sister Judith Sansone of Shelby Twp., MI and a brother Karl (Linda) Dahl of Ishpeming, 11 step grandchildren, 6 step great grandchildren, 2 nieces; Elizabeth & Joey Sansone and a nephew Charles Sansone.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 2, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming with Rev. Greg Floars officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Albert J. "Al" Cartier
BRADENTON, FL -- Mr. Albert J. "Al" Cartier, age 82, of Bradenton, FL, passed away October 10, 2001 at Blake Medical Center in Bradenton.
Al was born on May 29, 1919 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He was a retired Insurance Agent with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and worked for Publix for 10 years. He also served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Al is a recipient of the Bronze Star, a Pearl Harbor survivor, member of the American Legion, Elks & Holy Name Society. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church. He moved to Manatee County Florida in 1985.
Al is survived by his companion: Loraine Taylot of Bradenton; 2 Daughters: Sue Tremblay of Haverhill, MA & Peg Pietrowski of Hudson, NH; 2 Sisters, Rita Belleville of Haverhill, MA & Sister Claire Cartier of Lanham, Maryland; 2 Brothers: Gilbert Cartier of Amesbury, MA & Phillip Cartier of Haverhill, MA; 3 Grandchildren & 2 Great Grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass was held on October 15 at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church. Memorial contributions can be made to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, 833 Magellan Dr., Sarasota, FL 34243.
