Alma A. (Berg) Johnson
MUNISING -- Alma A. (Berg) Johnson
May 21, 1907 - November 6, 2001
Alma was born of the union of John and Hedwig (Makela) Berg of Slapneck, Michigan. She departed this life to join her beloved husband, Walter, and they spent seventy-three years of wedded bliss together before he went to his reward in 1999. Alma and Walter married in 1926 and they had two boys and two girls. One child remains, namely, Mary Ann Staley of Toledo, Ohio.
She and her husband owned and operated "Johnson's Cabins" which they built in the early 1940's. They also owned Lake View Cabins and The Blue Fountain Motel which Walt built. Alma handled many a clothespins back in those days as she did all of the wash and mangling of sheets, folding towels, etc. and her daughters helped when they were not in school, but the brunt of all that was solely hers. With all that, she served a big meal at noon including pies, cakes, etc. How that woman could work!!
She found time doing things for others and she and her husband received an award from the Alger Historical Society for their contributions and the countless hours they donated.
Alma and Walt were avid hunters and she was the first woman in Alger County to "bag a buck."
After her children left home, she took up painting and became an accomplished artist and was featured in different shows, etc. She sold and gave many as gifts to her family and friends. Now she has paintings from coast to coast.
Alma and Walt loved to travel and spent many winters in Florida, New Mexico, and California. While in California, in the early 1950w, they met many celebrities- Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Red Skelton, who incidentally, Alma and Red Skelton's picture found its way to the Munising News. At that time, Rosie Golisek was in the TB sanatorium and she adored Jimmy Durante so Alma looked him up and told him about Rosie and Jimmy sent her an autographed picture. Another thanks to Alma.
Alma and Walt went to visit their parent's birthplace in Finland and also visited the Holy Land. They were both very humble people and felt they may have walked where Jesus walked and made a most emotional experience.
Alma was voted by the staff and residents of Briarfield to represent their facility in "My Fair Lady" pageant at the Lucas County Fair at which time she was presented with a trophy. She and Walter were so well liked, they were crowned King and Queen at the Valentine festivities in 1996.
Besides her daughter Mary Ann and husband Ron, she leaves her five grandchildren to mourn her passing, William Spencer of Munising, Barbara (Jim) Negilski of Colorado, Diana (Kirk) Hillier, Alison (Chip) Eckert, and Bonnie (Richie) Sibberson of Toledo, twelve great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, parents, a brother John Berg, a sister Lydia Levine preceded her in death also her three children- daughter Alice, baby Wally, and Walter "Sonny" Johnson, three grandchildren, baby Nyman, Rick Staley, and Eddie Staley.
Alma will be sadly missed by all that knew and loved her and everyone was welcome to visit their paradise on Lose Lake for coffee, cake and many saunas. Alma's smiling face, her kind gracious spirit and her loving concern for others will be greatly missed. Her memory will be an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. Thanks for the memories and all the wonderful years.
