Mildred S. Carafelly
MARQUETTE -- Mildred S. Carafelly, 88, of Marquette, died Thursday morning, November 8, 2001 at the Norlite Nursing Center where she had been a resident for the past three years.
Mrs. Carafelly was born on August 21, 1913 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Frederick and Charlotte (Hammond) Swanson. She had lived in this area most of her life and was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
Mildred was the loving mother of Charlotte (Fred) Taccolini of Marquette, Robert (Sarah) Dingman of Cheboygan, MI, Thomas (Sharon) Dingman of Royal Oak, James (Sylvia) Dingman of Gold Canyon, AZ and Angelo (Carol) Carafelly of Royal Oak; dear grandma of 19 and great grandma of 28; beloved sister of Lawrence Swanson, Big Bay, Marian (Emerson) Fleury, Marquette, Agnes TenEyck, Big Bay, Hazel Blankenfeld of New Mexico, Phyllis Burgo, Grand Rapids, MI and Doris Price of Marquette; also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Mildred in death besides her parents was her husband, Louis D. Carafelly on April 10,1998; two brothers, Fred and James Swanson and one granddaughter, Susan Dennison.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick officiating. Burial will take place in the Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral mass on Saturday at the church.
Pallbearers, all grandsons will be Fred Taccolini, David Taccolini, John Carafelly and Jon Dingman.

Raymond A. Vial
ISHPEMING TWP -- Raymond A. Vial, age 81, of 410 S. Rose St. Ishpeming passed away Thursday, November 8, 2001 in the comfort of his home with his family and U.P. Home Health & Hospice at his side.
Raymond was born August 7, 1920 in Champion to the late James & Lydia (Bartle) Vial. He worked 40 years for the C.C.I. Mining Company, 20 years as an underground miner and retired in 1982 as a truck driver.
Raymond is survived by his wife, whom he married April 1, 1944, Irene (Johnson) Vial, a son, David (Connie) Vial of Ishpeming, a daughter, Diane (Mike) Mingori of Negaunee, 3 sisters; Hyacinth (Walter) Nyquist of Houghton Lake, MI, Melissa (Melvin) Willer of Troy, MI and Doris Gustafson of Orange, CA, 8 grandchildren; Marci (Ron) Saari- Negaunee, Christy (Jay) Blewett- Ishpeming, Cory (Paula) Vial- Ishpeming, Katie Vial- Ishpeming, Stephanie Mingori- Negaunee, Michael Vial- Ishpeming, Tina Vial- Wausau, WI, 7 great grandchildren; Ronald, Alyssa & Hailee Saari, Taylor, Bryce, Morgan & Shae Blewett, along with several nieces & nephews. Raymond was preceded in death by a son, Norman, 2 brothers; Sidney & Stanley Vial, 4 sisters; Pearl Luke, Gladys Voight, Goldie Harper and Bertha Vivian.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon Saturday, November 10, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Chappel officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Kenneth L. Hallstead
ISHPEMING -- Kennth L. Hallstead, age 82 of 748 E. Michigan St. Ishpeming passed away on Friday, November 9, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he had been a patient for the past month.
Kenneth was born June 29, 1919 in Brainerd, MN the son of the late Clarence and Jeanette (Birsall) Hallstead. He moved from Minnesota to Ishpeming in 1934, graduating from the Ishpeming High School in 1937. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was in battles in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe and received the Victory Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 3 bronze battle stars. Kenneth worked for the CCI Co. for almost fourty years, retiring as a control room operator from the Tilden Mine. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and the United Steelworkers of America.
Survivors include his wife Lillian Hallstead of Ishpeming whom he married in 1939; a son Leon Hallstead of Ishpeming; a daughter Cheryl Badger of Port St. Lucy, FL; 2 grandchildren Alesia Carello of Ishpeming and Terrence Gardiner of Ishpeming; and 5 great grandchildren- Shawn, Nichole, Devin, Danny and Christina.
Private family services will be held at the Ishpeming Cemetery where inurnment will take place.

Richard "Chip" Dompier
BARAGA -- Richard "Chip" Dompier, 54, of Baraga, died suddenly Thursday, November 8, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Baraga, MI on June 1, 1947, the son of the late Wilfred and Selma (Alatalo) Dompier. He attended Baraga Area Schools. Chip married the former Bonnie Koykka on March 17, 1986 in Las Vegas, NV. Richard learned his life skill as butcher at the former Beck's Store in Baraga, and later worked at Larry's Market for over 36 years. Chip was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. He was also a member of the Lion's Club serving as past King Lion and the American Legion Baraga Post 444. He was one of the founders of the Baraga Lumberjack Days and served as chief of the Baraga Fire Department, retiring after 30 years. He started "Chip's Kids" through the Fire Department, a fire safety education program in the schools and for senior citizens. He was a member of the National Guard, retiring after 22 years of service. He was a member of the Baraga County Housing Commission. He was a volunteer ambulance driver and organizer, a coach, and a manager of Baraga Little League. He played on the Baraga fast pitch softball team. Chip was an avid rabbit hunter and ice fisherman. His leisure activities included attending auctions and yard sales. He and his family enjoyed traveling and camping. His passion was food, both butchering and preparing meals. He and his wife Bonnie were widely known for their catering business. He cooked for the National Guard and is remembered as chef of the annual St. Ann's Hunter Supper. The Detroit Lions blue and silver was his other life passion. Chip was the Lions' most loyal U.P. fan.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; 3 sons, Chad at home, Bill of Grand Rapids and Tom and fiancee Jennifer at MSU in East Lansing; 2 daughters, Jennifer of Grand Rapids and Amy and her special friend Jeff of Chesterfield, MI; 5 brothers, Ray (Mary Ann), James (Doris), Jerry (Diane), Wendell and his special friend Judy, all of Baraga and Douglas (Irene) of Spokane, WA; sister, Mary Jane (Melvin) LaJoye of Hastings, MI; sister-in-law, Phyllis of Gaylord, MI; mother-in-law, Vi Karvakko of Baraga; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Peggy Danis of Las Vegas, NV. Numerous aunts, nieces and nephews also survive.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Monday, November 12, 2001 from St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. Father George Joseph will be the Celebrant and intermenty will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. A military graveside service will be held at the cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, November 11, 2001 from 6 until 9pm at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, and one hour prior to the Mass on Monday at the church. A parish prayer will be held at 7pm in the Chapel. Baraga Area Firemen will conduct a review at 7:30 followed by the American Legion Baraga Post 444. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Unto J. Myllymaki
ISHPEMING --Unto J. Myllymaki, 89, of 255 Lawrence Ave., Ishpeming, passed away Thursday morning at the F.A. Bell Memorial Hospital.
Unto was born January 1, 1912 in Ishpeming. He worked at the Cliffs Power and Light and at KI Sawyer Air Force Base from which he retired. Mr. Myllymaki liked to be outdoors and at his camp in Republic.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Germaine of Ishpeming; two sisters-in-law, Esther Myllymaki of Bay City and Elizabeth Coron of Ishpeming; one niece, Prudence Dynda of Bay City; four nephews, Douglas Coron of California, David (Nancy) Coron of Ishpeming, Thomas (Sandy) Gauthier of Powers, and James (Susan) Gauthier of Ishpeming; and several grand nieces and nephews also survive.
Per Mr. Myllymaki's request, there will be no visitation or service. The Racine Funeral Chapel of Ishpeming is handling arrangements.
Alan J. Maki
ISHPEMING -- Alan J. Maki, age 45, of 1700 Walnut St., Ishpeming, died Saturday, November 10, 2001 at the U.P. Home Health & Hospice's inpatient unit at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming following a 3 month battle with cancer.
Alan was born August 16, 1956 in Ishpeming to William J. and Donna (Annala) Maki. He was a life long area resident. Alan worked at the Miracle Bowling Center and Country Lanes. He was a member of the Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ishpeming.
Alan is survived by his parents William "Bill" and Donna Maki of Ishpeming; 2 brothers, Robert Maki and Vance (Ruth) Maki both of Ishpeming; a niece, Melissa Maki; a nephew, Marc Maki; aunts and uncles, Helen (Reuben) Koski of Ishpeming and Toivo (Connie) Maki of Florida; 2 cousins, Claudia and Hope. Alan was preceded in death by a brother Donald Maki, maternal grandparents, Donald and Letty Annala and his paternal grandparents, Jack and Lempi Maki.
Funeral services will be held 1:00pm Monday, November 12, 2001 at the Hope Free Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Michael Burke officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Hope Free Lutheran Church on Monday from 11:00am until the time of service.

Eleanor E. Morgan
MARQUETTE -- Eleanor E. Morgan, 81, of 111 E. Wright Place, went to be with the Lord Friday evening, November 9, 2001.
She was born September 8, 1920 in Harvey to Fred and Carrie (Billings) Dionne and had lived in this area all of her life. She worked for a number of years at both St. Luke's Hospital and Ben Franklin. A member of the Marquette Gospel Tabernacle, she was devoted to her church and the Lord and served as a Sunday School teacher, missionette leader and missionary treasurer. She and her husband Joseph ministered at Snowberry Heights, Morgan Heights, Palmer Home for the Aged, the Orchard Rest Home, the Marquette County Jail, and the Norlite Nursing Center. Eleanor was a loving, giving, caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She always put others first in her life and was always there for her family. Playing the guitar and singing both gave her great joy.
Eleanor is survived by her husband Joseph, to whom she had been married since February 14, 1940; five daughters, Nancy (Dave) Simons of Kansas City, MO, Cheryl Morgan of Evansville, IN, Bonnie (Lee) Harris of Indianapolis, IN, Peggy (Huey) Leach of Marquette and Faith (Jay) Hibben of Alamogordo, NM; three sons, David (Pat) Morgan of Carlshend, Mike (Shelly) Morgan and Mark Morgan, both of Marquette; a sister, Isabelle VanBrocklin of Gladstone; 23 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, November 13, 2001 in the Marquette Gospel Tabernacle with Reverend Gordon Wells officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons Robert Harris, Brian Simons, Kevin Schuble, Nathan Leach, and Joseph and Matthew Morgan. Visitation will be from 4-8:00pm Monday, November 12, 2001 at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home, and at the church after 10:00am on Tuesday.

Esther E. Wyse
NAUBINWAY -- Esther E. Wyse, 84, of Naubinway, died Friday, November 9, 2001 at the Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
Born January 18, 1917 in Sandusky, MI, the daughter of the late George and Clara (Sisco) Thomas, Mrs. Wyse moved to Naubinway in 1946 with her husband, Rev. Ora Wyse, who accepted the pastoral duties at the Naubinway Mennonite Church. Esther's involvement with the church operations and functions spanned over 50 years including assisting her husband in three church plantings in the Upper Peninsula and also co-managing the Northwoods Christian Camp in Pickford for eight years. In the late 1950's, she co-founded Wyse Laundry in Naubinway and operated the family business until its closing in the spring of 2000. Esther was also a member of the Naubinway Friendship sewing group and volunteered for the West Mackinac County Pantry. She was well-known for her hospitality to her family and numerous friends throughout the years along with her baking and cooking.
Besides her parents, Esther is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Ora Wyse on May 25, 1999; also her daughter-in-law Jane Wyse; grandson Brandon Wyse; two brothers and six sisters. Survivors include her four sons, Larry (Lonnie) of Naubinway, Carlton (Ruth) of Hudsonville, Mervin (Judy) of St. Ignace and Gerald (Kathryn) of Ada; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, with one to be expected; sisters Velma Starr of Snover, Fern Thomas of Midland and June Terwilliger of Freeland.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 12, 2001 at 12:00 noon at the Naubinway Mennonite Church with Pastor Tim Miller officiating. Interment will follow at the Naubinway Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Sunday, November 11 from 5-9pm and also on Monday, November 12 from 10:00am until time of services.

GRAND MARAIS -- Mary H. Wood, 99, of Grand Marais, died Saturday morning, November 10, 2001 at the Luce County Annex in Newberry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, November 13, 2001 at 11:00am at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Marais with Fr. Glenn Theoret officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the reciting of the rosary at 9:30am on Tuesday at the church with visitation following at 10:00am until time of the mass.

Rudolf J. Gauthier
BARAGA -- Rudolf J. Gauthier, age 90, passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of Baraga County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Houghton, MI on March 5, 1911, the son of the late Edward and Aldea (Mongrain) Gauthier. Rudolf attended St. Ignatius Catholic School in Houghton. He was an alter boy for 18 years and a Soloist in Houghton and St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. Mr. Gauthier married the former Florentia Girard on August 26, 1931. She preceded him in death in 1979. Rudolf was a cook at the Douglas House in Houghton for several years. He then went to work for the Soo Railroad Line, advancing to Engineer until he retired in 1976 after 30 years of service. Rudolf was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was a member of the Houghton Fire Department and the Eagles Club in Hancock until his move to Baraga. He resided in Baraga for over 46 years.
He is survived by his 4 children, Edward (Judy) Gauthier of Owatonna, MN, Joseph (Margaret) Gauthier also of Owatonna, MN, Mary Pearce of Deford, MI and Betty Kay (Harlan) Fish of Baraga; 21 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 1 sister, Margarite Meyer of Michigan City, IN. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Florentia; daughter, Therese Belhumer; grandson, Joseph; 3 brothers, Ed, Art and Paul; and 2 sisters, Aldea (Babe) Welch and Florence Schumaker.
A Mass of Christian Burial wil be celebrated Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at 11:00am from St. Ann's Catholic Church in Baraga. Father George Joseph will be the celebrant and intermenty will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. His grandchildren will honor him as casket bearers. The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 13, 2001 from 6 until 9pm from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse and 1 hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday at the church. A parish prayer service will be held at the funeral chapel at 7pm. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Adeline H. Todd
MARQUETTE -- Adeline H. Todd, 81, 424 E. Arch St., entered eternal life on Friday, November 9, 2001 at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Adeline was born in Marquette on August 23, 1920 to Ruth (Hoglund) and William Swanson, and was later adopted by her stepfather Ernest Oman. She was a lifelong resident of Marquette and wintered for many years in Green Valley, Arizona. She worked as a telephone operator at Michigan Bell in her early years. In 1941 she married William A. Todd who ran the Longyear Companies, and he predeceased her in 1983. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, which was originally the Swedish Baptist Church, with her grandfather William Hoglund as one of the founding members. Adeline served Bethel as a Sunday School teacher and Girl's Missionary Guide leader, and was a member of the Women's Missionary Society and the choir. She often entertained visiting pastors and missionaries home on furlough as well as shared her cottage on Conway Lake with many friends. Adeline enjoyed traveling in her latter years.
Adeline is survived by her daughter, Kathleen McKindles, and her son, William A. (Cheryl) Todd, Jr. of Marquette, her grandchildren Allyson Todd of Green Bay, William(Willy) Todd, III of Marquette, Erica Shorkey (Bruce) Brumm of DesMoines, IA, and Deidre Shorkey, Aidan McKindles (Eric Prudom) and Ian McKindles, all of Marquette. She is also survived by two great grandchildren, Asa Shorkey-Brumm and Isabelle Prudom, who brought much love and happiness to her last years. Also surviving are Adeline's sisters, Dorothy (Arthur) Patrick of Marquette, Nancy (William) Holmstrom of Gladstone and Carolyn (Stanley) Ford of Apache Junction, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews, including special niece, Doris Holmstrom.
Visitation will take place beginning at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 14,
2001 at the Bethel Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM with Pastors Bob Donaldson and Hank Steede officiating. Pallbearers will be William Todd III, Ian McKindles, Pat McKindles, Frank Buytaert, Robert Ray and Curt Marker, with burial to take place in Park Cemetery. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.

LAKEFIELD -- Beverly J. Schaefer, 72, of Lakefield, died Saturday morning November 10, 2001 at her residence following a courageous battle with progressive supranuclear palsy for the past ten years. Eino Mattson
NEGAUNEE -- Eino Mattson, 89, 309 E. Lincoln St., Negaunee was pronounced dead on arrival at Bell Memorial Hospital at 8:12 Am on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001 following a six month illness.
Mr. Mattson was born January 14, 1912 in Gwinn to Albert & Hilja (Hiipakka) Mattson, attended Gwinn High School and was a Negaunee resident since 1944. He worked for CCI for over 44 years, retiring as a motorman from the Mather B Mine in 1974. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting & fishing. Surviving are his wife Lillian R. (Jacobs) 2 daughters; Grace (Kenneth) Jalonen, Negaunee, Linda Larson, Negaunee, 5 granddaughters; Sandra (Rod) Swiedals, Michigamme, Julie Jalonen Altamonte Springs, FL, Vicki Jalonen, Orlando, FL, Christine Larson, Marquette, Candie Larson, Negaunee, 1 great grandson, Kyle Swiedals, Michigamme, 2 brothers; Arne (Taimie) Mattson, Negaunee, Edwin (Anna) Mattson, Gwinn 3 sisters; Aune Malette, Helen Mattson, & Eila (Leo) Hill, all of Gwinn, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Onni Mattson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. Christine Thomas-Echelbarger, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.

Linda S. Lovern
ISHPEMING -- Linda S. Lovern, 51, of 115 S. Marigold Street, Ishpeming, died Sunday afternoon at Marquette General Hospital after a short illness.
Mrs. Lovern was born on October 19,1950 in Marquette to the late Roy B. and Ruth I. (Desmond) L'Huillier. She was a l968 graduate of Marquette Senior High School and a lifelong resident of this area. At the time of her death, Linda was employed by Northern Michigan University.
Linda loved life. She saw beauty in everything and everyone. Linda enjoyed morning coffee by the river watching the sunrise and the deer eat. She was an angel on earth, living each day with great passion. She believed in the beauty of the first snow,
the magnificent lakes, the trees and flowers and the clouds in the sky. While relaxing in her hot tub, soaking in the sun, she would listen to the birds and watch them play in the water fountain.
Linda was filled with kindness and generosity, always giving of herself, especially if it was a bargain. She loved all the holidays. Her home would transform into a magical place with decorations in every nook and cranny. Each month would bring about a new theme, as the seasons changed, so would her home. Linda loved to celebrate life. She was the hub of our family wheel, always planning; preparing for a new celebration, keeping us grounded and focused on living in the moment. Linda will continue to live on in all of our hearts. Life is about memories and moments in time, cherished forever.
Linda leaves her loving husband, John, whom she married on August 1, 1983 in Duluth, Minnesota; three cherished children, Deanna (Andrew) Borsheim of Milwaukee, Dennis (Sara) VanAbel of Negaunee and Eric Lovern (Alyssa Patrick) of Ishpeming; two granddaughters, McKenna VanAbel, and Darian Patrick; two dear brothers, LeRoy (Janis) L'Huillier and Sam (Kathy) L'Huillier, both of Marquette, also one dear sister, Mary (Gary) Easterling of Jackson, MS; also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette on Tuesday from 4 to 7p.m. where a celebration of Linda's life will take place at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
