Norman Frederick Ruuspakka
PELKIE -- Norman Frederick Ruuspakka, age 81 of Pelkie passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following a 1 1/2 year courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on November 27, 1919 in Pelkie to William and Sophia (Haarala) Ruuspakka.
Norman married Sylvia Saari in Elo on August 15, 1942. He attended the Gidding school in Pelkie and later assumed operation of the family dairy farm which he and his wife operated for more than 45 years.
Norman was a member of the Mission United Lutheran Church in Pelkie. He had been a member of the Cooper Country Dairy Cooperative and was a trustee on the Laird Township Board. He had also been employed by the Pelkie COOP Building Supply and Lakeview Lumber in L'Anse. In 1993, he and his wife were the recipients of the Baraga County Fair Pioneer Farmer Award. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the outdoors and being with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sylvia of Pelkie; daughter Sandra (George) Sheffler of Fremont, MI, son, Dennis (Sandy) Ruuspakka of Pelkie, grandchildren, Rebecca Sheffler of Fort Myers, FL, 1st Lt. Keith Sheffler (USMC) of Jacksonville, NC, Kyle Ruuspakka of Baraga, Kedrin Ruuspakka of Mt. Pleasant, MI; several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by 2 sisters, Jennie Paavola, and Elizabeth Arens, and brothers, Edward, William, Waino, Andrew, and Richard.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mission United Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour pnor to the service at the Church, Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in the Pelkie Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the Mission United Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.

NEWBERRY -- Richard E. "Dick" Ross, 64, of Newberry, died Friday November 9, 2001 at the William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI.

Arnold Arthur Kallio
CHATHAM -- Arnold Arthur Kallio, 76, of Chatham, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at 6:36 p.m. He passed quietly away in his home under the loving care of his family and Northwoods Hospice. He had spent the previous six weeks in Marquette General Hospital battling polycythemia and complications following surgery. Arnie was born on May 22, 1925 in Chatham, Michigan to Toivo and Esther (Luoma) Kallio. After graduating from Eben High School in 1943, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy serving in WWII as an electrician's mate on both the U.S.S. Louisville and the U.S.S. Norton Sound. After his military duties, he attended electrician's school in Chicago. Arnie married Betty G. Robare of Munising in 1947. His lifelong career with the State of Michigan began on September 6, 1949 as a Forest Fire Lookout near Big Bay. In November of 1950, he was transferred to the State Highway Department as a weighmaster and was stationed in both Jackson and St. Ignace before being promoted to Assistant Dist
rict Weighmaster for the U.P. and returned to Chatham with his wife and family in 1965. He retired in l980 and lived the remainder of his years here.
Arnie loved the Lord and was an active member of the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham. He was a proud and active member of the V.F.W., a member of the State of Michigan Retirees Association, and a past coach of Little League Baseball in Chatham. Arnie was well known for his sense of humor, singing voice, and love of music. He will he sorely missed hy his family and friends.
He is survived hy his wife, Betty G. (Robare) Kallios of Chatham; their five children, sons Terry (Jackie) Kallio of Sharpsville, IN, Bruce (Kathy) Kallio of Chatham, Gary (Cindy) Kallio of Rumely, and Tom (Pam) Kallio of Portage, MI, daughter - Susie (Rodger) Harbaugh of Fenton, MI; 10 grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren (with one to be born this week); his sister - Beatrice (Clifford) Johnson of Chatham; his brother Reverend Harold (Joy) Kallio of Lake Havasu City, AZ; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Arnie was preceded in death by his parents, Toivo and Esther Kallio and by a sister and brother-in-law, Alice (Glenn "Junior") Goin.
Deacon Mark Sippola will conduct a memorial service on Friday, November 16, 2001 at 11:00a.m. at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham. Visiting time with family and friends will be at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. The Ikkala Brothers V.F.W. Post of Chatham and the Alger County Veterans Council will conduct graveside services at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham following the memorial service at the church.

Beverly A. (Kidd) Aken
MUNISING -- Beverly A. (Kidd) Aiken, age 63, of 111 Chestnut Street, Munising and formerly of Ford River, died on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at her home following a brief illness. Bev was the daughter of the late Emerson Kidd and Violet (McGinnis) Kidd
of Ford River. She was raised in Ford River and was a 1957 graduated of Escanaba High School. Bev married Gary Aken on June 5, 1984 in Munising. She enjoyed homemaking, her flower garden, riding in the woods, camp, crossword and word puzzles, playing in a smear league, knitting, and being with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Gary Aken of Munising; three daughters and two sons-in-law - Debra ( Eric ) Beaudrie of Traverse City, Carol (Art) Harris of Hermansville, Julie Baribeau of Paw Paw; son - David Baribeau of Powers; four grandchildren - Craig, Amanda, Tyler, and Adam; three step-daughters and their husbands Annette (Ron) Tuyle, Nancy (Darren) Huemphtner, and Katrina (David) Kowalkowski: step-grandchildren - Bryce, Max, Aaron, and Jordan; brother - Emerson (Donna) Kidd, Jr. of Ford River; sister - Penny Brown of Arizona; father-in-law Bernard R. Aken of Munising; brothers and sisters-in-law - Dave (Kathy) Aken, Bernard (Phylis) Aken, and Mike (Jan) Aken; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted by Pastors Kurt and Mary Beth Kovanen at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday, November 16, 2001 at 4:00 p.m. with visiting time for family and friends from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. A fellowship gathering will be at the Munising Moose Lodge following the services at the funeral home.
Gary Neil Pine
KEY WEST, FL -- Gary Neil Pine, 65, passed away Tuesday, November 6, 2001 at his residence in Key West. He was born at his parent's house in National Mine, Michigan. Coming from Michigan while in the Air Force, he had been a resident of Key West since 1971. Gary served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years retiring in 1975. He was a carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 21 years retiring on January 2, 1998. Gary was a member of the Non-Commissioned Officers Assoc., a member of American Legion Post #28 and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Local 818.
Gary is survived by his mother, Gertrude Pine of Ishpeming, MI; his loving wife, Emily "Jo" Pine; 1 brother, Joel "Joe" Pine and wife Gloria of Rapid City, SD; 1 sister Sue Le Clair and husband Lowell of West End, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews & great nieces & nephews.
A Cremation was held and no services are planned at this time. Per his wishes and his love of Michigan, in the Spring his remains will be scattered in Upper Michigan. KEWEENAW BAY -- Jerry L. Hebert, 40, of Keweenaw Bay died from injuries received in a 4 wheeler accident Saturday, November 10, 2001. Jerry was born in L'Anse on August 19, 1961, son of Lowell and Lola (LaCosse) Hebert. He graduated from Baraga High School in 1979. Jerry was employed as a welder at Koski Welding. He had formerly worked at Lake Superior Nursery and Landscaping. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and outdoor activities.
Jerry is survived by his mother Lola, sons, Ryan and Kent Hebert of Seaford, VA, brothers, Terry of Colorado, Steven (Sue) of Corpus Christi, TX. Rodger (Cathy) of L'Anse, Larry (Carol) of Pelkie, Patrick of Baraga, Edward of Baraga, sisters, LuAnn (Mike) Hill and Janean Brown both of Baraga. His special friend, Mickey Deziel of Keweenaw Bay survives, in addition to, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Lowell in 2000, and grandparents.
A Funeral service will be held for Mr. Hebert Thursday, November 15, 2001 at 8 p.m. from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Father Greg Heikkala officiating. Rudolph E. Ahola
AMASA, MI- Rudolph E. Ahola, age 64 of P.O. Box 36, Amasa passed away Monday, November 12, 2001 at the Marquette General Hospital following a brief illness.
Rudolph was born February 22, 1937 in Stambaugh, MI to the late Sulo & Ellen (Pakkala) Ahola. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 8 years with an honorable discharge in 1964. Rudolph worked for the C.C.I. Mining Company at the Tilden Mine as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1999.
Rudolph enjoyed spending time at his camp on the Net River. He was a loved & generous person & will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Rudolph is survived by 2 brothers - William (Barb) Ahola of Crystal Falls and Donald (Jeri) Ahola of Ishpeming; 2 sisters - Jane Ahola of Amasa and Joyce (Bud) Flynn of Green Bay; 2 step daughters - Paula (Jodi) Champagne & children of Iron Mountain and
Christine Harlock & children of Ishpeming, 2 nieces, 2 nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Pauline in July 1997.

Kimberly Jean Scott
MARQUETTE -- Kimberly Jean Scott, 30, of 1707 Kimber Ave., Marquette, died Tuesday morning at her home following a long battle with cancer.
Ms. Scott was born March 1, 1971 in Ely, Minnesota, a daughter of Glenn & Candy (Jean) Scott. She was a 1989 graduate of Marquette Senior High School. Kimberly received her bachelors degree from Michigan State University and a masters degree from Eastern Michigan University. She was employed as an occupational therapist with Marquette General Hospital.
Kimberly is survived by her parents, Glenn & Candy of Marquette; her paternal grandfather, Bill Scott of Oaklawn, IL; her maternal grandfather, Walt Jean of Nadeau; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Rob Scott in 1987.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3 until 4:30 pm at the CanaleTonella Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 5 pm in St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick officiating. lnterment will be held in Nadeau Township Cemetery.

Lillian B. "Bubbles" Pederson
SHELTER BAY -- Lillian B. "Bubbles" Pederson, 77, of E3347 M-28, Shelter Bay, entered eternal life Sunday morning, November 11, 2001, at her home following a lengthy illness. Lillian was born July 4, 1924 in Marquette, a daughter of the late James Edward and Beatrice L. (DeRocher) Cline. She was a 1942 graduate of the Graveraet High School. On August 15, 1942 she married Almen Hugh Pederson in Marquette and the couple soon moved to California where they resided for over 30 years. They returned to this area in 1979, and
have lived in Shelter Bay for the last 10 years. While in Marquette, Lillian worked as a hall monitor at the Bothwell Middle School, and while residing in Shelter Bay, she and her husband operated and managed the Shelter Bay Grocery for a time. Lillian
loved to sew, play cards, read, and had a passion for baseball, especially Atlanta Braves Baseball. A loving wife, mother, proud grandparent, and sister, she is survived by: her husband of over 59 years, Almen Pederson; her son, James (Sheila) Pederson of Harvey; son-in-law, Peter Pena of Trenary; grandchildren, Rob (Carrie) Pederson, Daren Pederson and his fiancee, Renee Williams; Peter (Heather) Pena Jr, Zachary (Arin) Lara, and Felix Lara and his fiancee, Hillery Laakso; great-grandchildren, Madelyn

Richard M. Bizeau
ESCANABA -- Richard M. Bizeau Sr., 61 of 429 South 15th Street, Escanaba, died on Sunday, November 11, 2001 unexpectedly at home.
Dick was born October 16, 1940 in Gladstone, the son of Louis and Elvera (Rajala) Bizeau and was a 1958 Graduate of the Gladstone High School. His wife the former Judy A. Gafner whom he married May 13, 1960 survives.
He worked for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad starting October 16, 1964 and retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1997. For many years he was a pitcher for the local fast pitch softball league. He enjoyed all sports, hunting, fishing, coffee clutches, the casino, his family and grandchildren.
He leaves to survive his wife Judy, 2 sons; Mike (Jody) Bizeau and Tony (Beverly) Bizeau of Escanaba, 2 daughters; Ann (Jerry Akerley) Bizeau of Escanaba, Brenda (Allan) Bjorne of Mesa, Arizona, brothers; Bob (Lois) Bizeau and Jim (Eileen) Bizeau of Escanaba, brother-in-law, Jim Gafner of Portsmith, Virginia, sister, Shirley (Ira) Auch of Trumbull, Connecticut, sisters-in-law, Dori Gafner and Trina (Keith) Jackson of Kalamazoo, Michigan, 13 grandchildren; Scott, Stephanie, Terry, Kyle, Michael, Anthony, Melisa, Jordan, Travis, Damien, Adam, Lillian and Jared, and many nieces and nephews.

Stella Kritselis
NASHVILLE, TN - Stella Kritselis, 77, formerly of Marquette, died November 10, 2001 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, TN.
She was born October 24, 1924 in Marinette, WI to George and Florence Kromidas and had lived in Marquette during her early years when her parents owned a restaurant here. She also lived in Pensacola, FL for many years before moving to Tennessee. She worked as a registered nurse.
Stella is survived by three daughters, Andrea (Dr. James) Gaume of Nashville, TN, Krissen Kritselis of Pensacola, FL and Glorianne Kritselis of Mobile, AL; her mother, Florence Krom of Pensacola; two sisters, Rosemary Hendrix and Jeannie Patzakis; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Katie Gaume.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 13, 2001 in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Nashville. There will be a visitation at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home from 10:00-11:00am Thursday, November 15, 2001 with graveside services to follow at 11:00am at Park Cemetery.

Washington -- Gary W. Gallion, 53, of Washington, died Mon. Nov. 12, 2001 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Clinton Twp. He was born the son of James A. & Elizabeth (Lucas) Gallion April 16, 1948, in Munising. He graduated from Negaunee High School in 1966, & attended Ferris State University. He served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam Conflict. He was a Worldwide Networking Specialist for E.D.S. Gary was an avid golfer & loved the outdoors. He married his wife, Debbie DeSmit in Ishpeming, May 23, 1981, and was a devoted husband.
He is survived by his wife Debbie; his son Kurt Ronn of Negaunee; two grandchildren, Kaylee & Klay Ronn; one brother David Gallion of Skandia; three sisters, Kathy Herrala of Negaunee, Shirley Gallion of Chippewa Falls, WI, Patti Bergstrom of Williamston; several nieces and nephews, & faithful friend Rosie Jo.

Jack Guy Verveer
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - Jack Guy Verveer, 61, a resident of Port Charlotte, FL, died Monday, November 12, 2001 at the Hospice House in Ft. Myers, FL. He was born in Muskegon, Michigan on May 30, 1940 to Jacob and Onna Smith Verveer. He was a veteran of the VietNam War and retired from the U.S. Air Force after a career spanning 26 years. His last 18 years in the military, he worked as an Air Force Recruiter. He moved to the Port Charlotte area in 1993 from Green Bay, WI and worked as an audiometic consultant for Nobile Hearing Aid Center in Port Charlotte and Cape Coral. He was a member of the Florida Society of Hearing Healthcare Professionals, a Board Certified member of the International Hearing Society, the Retired Enlisted Association and the Green Bay Chapter of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Karen Knollinger Verveer; 2 daughters, Susan (Jeff) Reedy of Ortonville, MI and Becky (Ernest) Sobiesczyk of Edgerton, WI; and his mother, Onna Verveer of Muskegon, MI. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren, Alissa and Megan Reddy of Ortonville, MI and Justin Williams of Jacksonville, FL. L'ANSE -- Wilma Paquet, age 89 of L'Anse passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital skilled nurse unit.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the L'Anse Baptist Church. Visitation will be on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home, and Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Larry Saunders will officiate. Arthur Eugene Koski
ARLINGTON, Va. -- Arthur Eugene Koski, 80, of Marquette, Tampa and Arlington, Virginia, a retired Navy Department engineer, died of congestive heart failure November 13, 2001 at his home in Arlington.
Mr. Koski was a native of Marquette and a graduate of Northern Michigan University and George Washington University School of Engineering. He moved to Washington, D.C. in 1951 to work for the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command as a civilian engineer. He retired from the Navy Department in 1979 as an Assistant Division Director, Military Construction Programs. Mr. Koski also served on active duty in the Navy from 1943-1946 and retired from the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander in 1981. Following his retirement from the Navy he held the position of Director and Corporate Secretary of the Karell Institute, Inc. and served as a Consulting Engineer for Karell Archeological Services.
Prior to moving to the Washington area, Mr. Koski was a partner in the Koski Brothers Construction Company and served on the faculty staff at Northern Michigan University. He was a registered Professional Engineer in the District of Columbia and Florida, a member of the Virginia and National Society of Professional Engineers, and a Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was a member of the Arlington-Fairfax Elks Lodge 2188, the American Legion Post 139 of Arlington, the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 101 of Marquette, and a Life Member of the Naval Reserve Association and the Reserve Officers Association. He also belonged to the Theta Tau professional Engineering Fraternity. Mr. Koski was inducted into the Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Arlington and attended St. Markšs Lutheran Church in Marquette. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Irma Besola of Negaunee; two children, Susan (husband Don) Koski-Grafer of Warren, New Jersey, and Daniel (wife Ana) Koski-Karell of Arlington, six grandchildren, Arthur of Athens, Greece, Daniel of Cambridge, Massachusetts and William Koski-Karell of New York City, and Ana, Natalie and Victoria Koski-Karell of the home in Arlington. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Three brothers, William, Emil and Paul, preceded him in death in 1989, 1988 and 2001, respectively. A funeral service will be held on November 24, 2001 at Faith Lutheran Church in Arlington, Virginia. Interment with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery on November 30, 2001. A memorial service will also be held in Marquette, Michigan, on a date to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Markšs Lutheran Church or to Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice Program.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Karen Knollinger Verveer; 2 daughters, Susan (Jeff) Reddy of Ortonville, MI and Becky (Ernest) Sobiesczyk of Edgerton, WI; and his mother, Onna Verveer of Muskegon, MI. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren, Alissa and Megan Reddy of Ortonville, MI and Justin Williams of Jacksonville, FL. The family requests memorials to the St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Center Building Fund, 1441 Spear Street, Port Charlotte, FL 33948 or to the Hospice House of Ft. Myers, 9470 Health Park Circle, Ft. Myers, FL 33908. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home of Punta Gorda is serving the family.
