Mary E. Salter
ENGADINE -- Lifelong Engadine resident, Mary E. Salter, 89, died Thursday morning November 15, 2001 at the Luce County Annex in Newberry.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 17, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at the Engadine United Methodist Church in Engadine with Pastor Robert Norris officiating. Interment will follow at the Engadine Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church on Friday, November 16th from 4-8 p.m. and also on Saturday, November 17th from 2:00 p.m. until the time of services.

Oliver L. Granlund
REPUBLIC -- Oliver L. Granlund, age 81 of 218 Pine St. Republic passed away on Monday, November 12, 2001 at his home in Republic.
Oliver was born February 19, 1920 in Telleruide, CO to the late Axel & Lillian (Rova) Granlund. He has lived in Republic for over 60 years. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. as a Diamond Driller until his retirement.
He is survived by 2 sons Kris (Amy) Granlund and Michael Granlund both of Republic, 1 daughter Laurel (John) Baxter of Katy, Georgia, 8 grandchildren along with several nieces & nephews.
Graveside services will be held at the Republic Cemetery at a date to be announced later by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home of Ishpeming.
Bruce H. Corey
MANISTIQUE Bruce H. Corey, age 64, of HC01, Box 3155, Manistique (Steuben), died November 14, 2001 at his residence in Steuben following a very short illness with cancer.
He was born on April 14, 1937 in Steuben County, Freemont, Michigan where he worked as an auto mechanic, volunteer fireman and wrecker driver. In 1967 he joined the Michigan. In 1974 he transferred to Camp Cusino in Shingleton, Michigan in 1958. She preceded him in death after 33 years of marriage. He later married Phyllis Johnson in 1992 and they spent their summers at their home in Steuben and their winters at their home in Venice, Florida, the North Carolina; step-sons, Tom (Julie) Johnson of Tecumseh and David (Jennifer) Johnson of Lowell; sister, Carol (Ralph) Fullerton of Grass Lake; brother, Harley Corey of Jackson; several grand and great grandchildren; along with several nieces and a nephew.
A casual gathering for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Wetmore Community Building (Fire Hall) in Wetmore, Michigan. Memorial donations may be directed to the charity of your choice. The Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique assisted the family with arrangements.
Donald A. Belstrom
ISHPEMING -- Donald A. Belstrom, age 89 of 701 E. Empire St. Ishpeming passed away Thursday, November 15, 2001 at the Marquette General Hospital.
Donald was born August 9, 1912 in Negaunee to the late William & Matilda (Anderson) Belstrom. He graduated from the Negaunee High School, class of 1930. Donald served in the United States Army during World War II.
Donald managed Spear & Son's Lumber in Ishpeming, where he retired from in 1975. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of the Ishpeming ELKS for 56 years, a charter member of the Negaunee Male Chorus and served on the Selective Service Systems, Local Board #54 of Marquette County. He loved his garden and enjoyed reading.
Donald is survived by a special friend of 45 years Faye St. Andre of Ishpeming, a sister Jean Guenther of Milwaukee, sister in law Ernestine Belstrom of Tampa, FL, a nephew Peter (Barbara) Belstrom of Michigan, died Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born on June 4, 1913 in Republic, Michigan Technological University in 1934, graduating at the tip of his class. He then went to the University of Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jackson Christian School, Science & Computer Depts., 4200 Lowe Rd., Jackson, MI 49203.
Lucy DeVilbiss Rauenbuehler
BURLINGTON, IA -- Mrs. Lucy DeVilbiss Rauenbuehler, age 90, of 2133 S. Central Ave., Burlington, Arizona. He spent a portion of his childhood in Trenary, MI, and later attended Northern TX, Susan Hytinen-Hoveland (Paul) of Ellisville, MO, and son Paul Hytinen (Lisa) of Daleville, IN; brother, James Hytinen of Delafield, WI; four grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Anders in 1988, his mother Jenny in 1994, and his brother Curtis in 1997.
A cremation was held and no services are planned at this time. Per his wishes and his love of the U.P., in the spring/ summer his remains will be buried/ spread by famly and close friends.
Toivo E. Aho
NEWBERRY -- Toivo E. Aho, 90, formerly of M-28 Rte. 1 P.O. Box 605, Newberry, died on Friday, November 16, 2001 at Cozy Acres Adult Foster Care.
Mr. Aho was born April 19, 1911 in Newberry to Charles and Sophie Aho. He attended Newberry Schools and was a life long Newberry resident. He was a member of the Newberry Eagles Club and loved to travel in his spare time.
Surviving are 1 son, Melvin Aho, Michigan; 1 brother, Reino (Grace) Aho of Lincoln Park, MI; 2 sisters, Mae (Bob) Schiner of Michigan; 2 great grandchildren, Meagan and Trevor. He was preceded in death by his wife Ethel in 1978.

Edna M. Dunstan
NEGAUNEE -- Edna M. Dunstan, 85, formerly of 126 1/2 E. Lincoln St., Negaunee, died on Friday, November 16, 2001 at 11:20am in the Mather Nursing Center where she had been a patient for the past 2 years.
Edna was born January 6, 1916 in Ishpeming to John and Elizabeth (Sorvisto) Luoma. Edna was a 1933 graduate of Ishpeming High School and a life long are resident. She worked as a Nurses Aide at the Acocks Facility and was a member of Mitchell United Methodist Church. Edna was a member of the church choir for 40 years and was a member of the United Methodist Women where she served as past president.
Surviving are 1 daughter, Cathy (Paul) Argall, Ishpeming; 1 sister, Teckala Pasanen, Detroit; 1 sister-in-law, Dorothy Maynard, Marysville, MI; 2 grandchildren, Bradley (Jody) Argall, Ishpeming and Michelle (Ryan) LaMere, Ishpeming; 2 great grandchildren, Brett and Ashley Argall, Ishpeming; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin in 1992; 1 daughter, Judy; 1 son, William III; 6 brothers and 6 sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00pm on Monday at Mitchell United Methodist Church. Rev. Scott Harmon will officiate. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 3:00pm until the time of services at 6:00pm on Monday.

Harold B. Hautio
SKANDIA -- Harold B. Hautio, 75, of 137 Lawson Rd., died Friday, November 16, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient since Wednesday.
Harold was born January 7, 1926 in Marquette to Eino and Lempi (Hill) Hautio and had lived in this area all his life. Prior to retiring in 1988 he worked for the L.S. & I. Railroad as an engineer for 43 years. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, United Trainmen's Union and a member of the Skandia Township Board for 25 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was the neighborhood handyman.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Leatrice Taylor; three daughters, Christine (Mel) Heppe of Traverse City, Lynn (Gary) Culver of Las Vegas, NV and Gina (Jim) Larson of Burbank, IL; a sister, Edna Koski of Marquette; seven grandchildren, Amy, Melissa, Brenden, Chris, Jon, Courtney and Riley; five great grandchildren, Sophia, Alex, Anna, Audrey and Lillian; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, November 19, 2001 in the Emanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Chad Christensen officiating. Burial will be in the Emanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery with Elmer Kiltinen, Spencer Johnson, Rick Shaw, Mel Heppe, Gary Culver and Jim Larson acting as pallbearers. Visitation will begin at the church at 11:00am on Monday. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sophia Vickerman
GRAND MARAIS -- Sophia Mary Vickerman, age 84, of 14225 N Crawford Street, Grand Marais, died following a lengthy illness on Friday, November 16, 2001 at 4:37pm at Marquette General Hospital. Sophie was born on April 18, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio. During Blair's working career, Sophie was a homemaker and they made their home all across the country. They lived in St. Cloud and Minneapolis, MN, La Canada, CA and Detroit before retiring to Grand Marais in 1974. Sophie was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Marais. During their retirement, she and Blair enjoyed traveling all around the world. They traveled to Europe, Canada, Mexico and the United States. One of Sophie's favorite trips was when she went to Rome to see the Pope. She enjoyed playing Bridge, BINGO, working crossword puzzles and she loved to play Solitaire for hours.
Sophie is survived by her husband of over sixty-one years, Blair Vickerman of Grand Marais; their son, Thomas (Judy Moore) Vickerman of Warren; their daughter, Anne (Alan) Hautamaki of Rochester Hills; grandchildren, Jared, Joshua and Kristin Hautamaki, and Kalinda (Randy) Lewis; her brother, Charles (Alma) Given of Grand Marais; and niece, Mary Pankowski along with many other nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Sophie was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Pankowski and a brother, William C. Given.
Friends may call at the Holy Rosary Church in Grand Marais on Monday, November 19, 2001. The Rosary will be recited at 10:15am and visitation will begin at 10:30am. Father Glen Theoret will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 noon at the church. Interment will be at the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Grand Marais.
Dr. Allen A. Ahola
GWINN -- Dr. Allen A. Ahola, 65, of 232 W. Flint Street, Gwinn, died Saturday evening at home after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Dr. Ahola was born January 3, 1936 in Marquette, a son of Neil and Helia (Karasti) Ahola. He was a 1954 graduate of the Negaunee High School. Following his graduation, Allen served in the navy from 1954 until 1958 and was stationed in Hawaii and Michigan University. He then attained his Ph.D. in general administration from the University of Michigan Department of Education as Director of Research from 1969-1972. Dr. Ahola then came to Gwinn working as an administrative assistant and later assuming the position of Superintendent of Schools from 1977 through 1986 before becoming the head of the UP Outreach Office through the Ohio St., returned to her Lord Saturday, November 17, 2001 at her home.
A lifelong area resident, she was born July 27, 1924 in Palmer to Camillo and Louisa (Mongiat) Colombo and was a graduate of Negaunee High School. Elsie worked for Marquette County for 30 years, initially in the Register of Deeds office and later in Probate Court, retiring as Probate Register. Her love of the Lord was shown in her caring ways for all. This was her greatest accomplishment and interest on this earth. She was an active and long time member of St. Peter Cathedral, and a member of St. Anthony of Padua Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Gold Star Wives of America, Beta Sigma Phi, the Marquette County Historical Society and a board member of the Marquette Catholic Credit Union.
Elsie is survived by two sons; Robert Cardoni of Dearborn and Michael (Janet) Cardoni of Marquette; a sister Mary Mayrand of Hibbing, MN, three grandchildren; Christopher Cardoni of Dearborn, Kevin Cardoni of Marquette and Ryan Cardoni of Dearborn, and a great grandchild Mariah Cardoni. She was preceded in death by her husband, First Lieutenant Jack Cardoni in 1949.
Monsignior Louis Cappo will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial will at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at St. Peter Cathedral. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery with Christopher, Kevin and Ryan Cardoni, Joe Buys, Bond Perket and Pat Ruecker acting as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 4 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with a Franciscan wake service at 6:30 PM and prayer services at 7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to a charity of one's choice in Elsie's name.
Orvilla M. Carr
ESCANABA -- Orvilla M. Carr, 89 of 2701 1st Ave. S., Escanaba, passed away Sunday evening, November 18, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital. Among the survivors are her two sons, Louis (Paulette) Carr of Marquette, and brother Francis Carr, Chicago.
She and her husband Louis owned and operated the family bakery for many years. Louis preceded her in death on November 24, 1969.
Visitation for Orvilla M. Carr will be held Tuesday at St. Patrick's Church from 11 AM until 1 PM with the Mass of Chrisitan Burial held at 1 PM. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. The Crawford Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Yvonne Marie (Lydick) Railey
MARQUETTE -- Yvonne Railey lost her third battle with breast cancer, dying at home in the loving care of her family and Lake Superior Hospice on Nov. 17, 2001.
Yvonne was born to Minnie (Conda) and Donald Lydick in Phoenix on Dec. 2, 1939. She was a life-long musician, having played in Tony Rolando's Accordion Band (with her brother) and in the Calumet High School marching band (oboe and sax--l957 graduate of CHS). She grew up in New Allouez and attended grammar schools in Ahmeek and Mohawk.
She served as a scout leader while her son Bo was growing up. She later went back to school, graduating Summa Cum Laude from NMU (secondary education/geography) in 1976. A limited local teacher market led her to apply her interest in geography by becoming a travel agent, a career she enjoyed immensely. She was most recently employed by Bennett Travel of Marquette. She was very proud of her Italian heritage and especially enjoyed visiting cousins still living in northwestern Italy where her grandparents grew up.
She married Bob Railey in 1983. Together they shared backpacking in the Sierra OH); and four grand-sons. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald of Tulsa (OK) and by several aunts and uncles.
A celebration of Yvonne's life will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, probably near Christmas time. Contributions in memory of Yvonne are directed to Lake Superior Hospice.
