Ada LeJuene Wilson
TRAUNIK -- Ada LeJuene Wilson, age 82, of E3426 H-44, Traunik, died on Saturday, November 17, 2001 at 12:22 a.m. in the Emergency Room of the Appleton Medical Center in Appleton, Wisconsin. She was born on March 18, 1919 in Gueydan, Louisiana to the late Lucian and Laura (Crador) LeJeune. Ada married William Sherman Wilson in 1943. They were married forty-six years before he preceded her in death in October of 1989. Ada had a green thumb and in her greenhouse she produced many beautiful plants and vegetables that she sold. She was a very talented homemaker. Ada was a seamstress and had made many quilts. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting, cooking, baking, canning her homemade jellies and jams, making her own cheese, and making ornaments with beads. Ada was a member of the New Life Assembly of God Church in Escanaba.
She was survived by her son and daughter-in-law - Joe and Gloria Wilson of Appleton; grandchildren - Ron, Mike, and Rick Wilson, and Paula Trobridge; ten great-grandchildren - Justin, Jared, Janelle, Katie, Paul, Jacob, Hailey, Austin, Joshua, and Cody; a half-brother - Alvin LeJeune; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ada was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, and four brothers.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Pastor Robert Derheim of the New Life Assembly of God of Escanaba will conduct the funeral service at 4:00 p.m. in the funeral homes chapel. Interment will be at the Limestone Township Cemetery. Ada will be escorted by Ron, Rick, Mike, and Justin Wilson, Tim Cox, and George Maki. Friends and family are invited to a fellowship gathering at the Trenary Community Building following the services.
Hilma Marie Alanen
RICHMOND TOWNSHIP -- Hilma Marie Alanen, 93, of Rte. 1 Box 402, Midway Location, Richmond Township, died at 3:21 AM on Monday, Nov. 19,2001 at the Norlite Nursing Center.
Hilma was born Aug. 27,1908 in Hurley, Wl to Nicholi & Maria (Kamunen) Hill. She grew up in Rock, moved to Richmond Township after her marriage and has been an area resident since that time. She was a homemaker who enjoyed crafts, knitting, crocheting, and puzzles.
Surviving are one daughter, Annette Heggaton, Negaunee Township, a son-in-law, Leonard Maki, Palmer, 9 grandchildren, Raymond Maki, Kevin (Cajsa) Maki, Gary Heggaton, Daniel Heggaton, David (Laurie) Heggaton, Terese (Larry) Tamminen, Roger Heggaton, Brenda (Barry) Gustafson, Lois (Johnson) DeRocher, and many great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 husbands; Bruno Lehtinen, Herman Hirvonen, Waino Alanen, a daughter, Vivian Maki, 2 grandsons; John & Robert Heggaton and a son-in-law, Robert 'Bummer' Heggaton.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. George R. Kaiser, pastor of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Suomi Location will officiate. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery.

Robert "Mooney" Asgaard
ISHPEMING -- Robert "Mooney" Asgaard, age 80, formerly of 748 Duncan Ave., Ishpeming, died Sunday, November 18, 2001 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had resided for the past two years.
Robert was born May 14, 1921 in Ishpeming to the late Iver and Bessie (Traise) Asgaard. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater having recieved the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, along with five bronze battle stars. He worked for the C.C.I. Co. for 26 years at several area mines, retiring in 1973 as a shovel operator at the Empire Mine. He was a member of the Ishpeming Cribbage League, the Ishpeming V.F.W. and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Robert was a kind and gentle man who loved watching his children's and grandchildren's various sporting events.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Carla (Terry) Herman of Grand Rapids, Diane (Dick) Pitlanich of Ishpeming and Sheila (Terry Houseman) Asgaard of Ishpeming; 2 sons, Robert (Nicole) Asgaard of Ishpeming and Bruce (Sandy) Asgaard of Ishpeming; 3 sisters, Shirley (Leonard) Pizziola, Bernice Dymond and June Dobson all of Ishpeming; grandchildren, Tanya (Troy) Klunder, Tara Herman, Kevin (Carol) Asgaard, Greg Asgaard, Heather Asgaard, April (Brian) Harkins, Craig Asgaard, Danielle Asgaard, Chad (Tara) Asgaard, Ashley Asgaard, Keri Cox, Richie Cox, Amber Cox, Dylan Herron and Corey Houseman; 3 great grandchildren, Luke Harkins, Drake Asgaard and Ava Asgaard.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emeline "Cubby" Asgaard in 1998, a son Michael in 1998, a brother Iver Asgaard and 3 sisters, Marie Dobson, Florence Aho and Lorraine Annala.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at 6:00pm at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Lauri O. Maki officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5:00pm until the time of service. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Dylan Herron, Richie Cox, Chad, Craig, Greg and Kevin Asgaard.

Travis T. Moore
LITTLE LAKE, MI -- Travis T. Moore, 18, of 488 Bible Camp Drive, Little Lake, died Sunday morning at Marquette General Hospital.
Travis was born February 5, 1983 in Ishpeming, a son of David and Barbara (LaChance) Moore.
One of Travis' biggest joys was just spending time with people.
He is survived by his parents, David & Barbara of Little Lake, his brothers, Troy (Heather) Moore, Todd Moore and his fiance, Julie Ellis of Gwinn; a sister, Megan Moore also of Gwinn; his maternal grandmother, Maxine Erickson of Little Lake; uncles, Jim (Linda) LaChance of Little Lake and Paul (Martha) LaChance of Fort Worth, TX; aunt, Pat Callaway of Dearborn Heights; special friend, Lon Russell of Marquette; and several cousins and distant aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 until 5 pm at the Gwinn Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 5 pm in the funeral home with the Pastor Lon Russell officiating. Interment will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery.
Daniel Leon Cihak
AUTRAIN, MI -- Daniel Leon Cihak, 54, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2001 at his home on AuTrain River.
He was born June 11, 1947 in Muskegon, MI to Robert and Verna (Maring) Cihak and grew up and worked in the Muskegon area, moving to AuTrain in June of this year. Daniel was a 1965 graduate of North Muskegon High School and graduated with a master's degree from Central Michigan University in 1971. He taught at the Reeths-Puffer Schools in Muskegon for 31 years, retiring in June. While there he was a popular coach for the cross country/ track teams for many years. Daniel was active in a variety of sports; he was a founding member of the Muskegon Sports Council, a member of the Grand Rapids Nordic Ski Team, was active in the Western Michigan Coast Riders Biking Club, and participated in the Birkebeiner Cross Country Ski Race out of Hayward, WI for 18 years. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow, an honorary society of the Boy Scouts of America. For many years he played saxophone in the Ed Kurdziel Polka Bank in Muskegon. He spent this summer and fall as a kayak guide for Northern Waters Adventures in Munising.
Survivors include his wife, the former Nancy Ford, who he married on May 11, 1996; his parents, Robert and Verna Cihak of Amasa, two step-daughters, Kari and Jami Farkas and a step-son Steve Farkas, all of Muskegon, a sister Shirley (late husband Lynn) Standberg of Muskegon, a brother Jim (Jennifer) Cihak of Marquette and four nieces and nephews; Mayme and Tyler Strandberg of Muskegon and Jessica and Jamieson Cihak of Marquette.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, November 23, 2001 in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Steven Rhoades and Reverend J.D. Ford Jr. officiating. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for a fund which will be designated later.
Gary Lee Zastrow
ANAHEIM, CA -- Gary Lee Zastrow, age 76, of 2815 Academy Avenue, Anaheim, CA 92804 passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 14, 2001, following a year of declining health. Family members were by his side at the time of his passing.
Gary was born in Munising on June 14th, 1925. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Viola Zastrow. He attended Munising Schools and graduated from William G. Mather High School in 1943. He then enlisted in the Navy in June 1943 where he served as a Shipfitter, 3rd Class aboard the Destroyer Escort U.S.S. Chatelain until his discharge in 1946. His ship was part of the U.S.S. Guadalcanal Task Force Group 22.3 which played an integral role in the Capture of the U505 German Submarine in 1944. He was awarded World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal W/1B*, European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal W/4B* and Presidential Unit Commendation ribbon W/1B*.
Gary married Frances Rader at Eden Lutheran Church of Munising on September 7, 1946. They moved to Kalamazoo, where he graduated from Western College. They returned to Munising in 1952 and owned and operated the Moosehead Tavern until 1962. He enjoyed sponsoring local bowling and softball teams and he loved boating and water skiing on beautiful Lake Superior.
After moving his family to California in 1962, Gary became a Quality Control Manager for Guptill Gear Corporation until he retired in 1986. In his retirement years, you could always find Gary "puttering" in the garage with all of his woodworking tools. He became a fine craftsman and was in the process of building a model of the U.S.S. Chatelain when he became ill. Gary was also an avid reader.
Gary was a member of the Amercian Legion Post #131 in Munising and he and Fran spent their summers in Munising after their retirement, thoroughly enjoying the camaraderie of the members at the Legion Club.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday, November 21st at the Ferrara Colonial Mortuary in Orange, CA. To honor Gary's wishes, his family will return his cremains to his final resting place in Munising in the Spring of 2002.
Survivors include his wife Frances of 55 years and children, Linda (Laddie) Grover of Orange, CA; George Zastrow of Guerneville, CA; Diane (Paul) Stevenson of Auburn, CA and Connie (Joe) Palatinus of Granite Bay, CA. He also leaves 5 grandchildren, 3 nieces and a sister, Miriam (Robert) May of Montgomery, Michigan.

John M. Nerone
MARQUETTE -- John M. Nerone, Jr., age 58, of 47 Feather Ridge Road, Marquette, died unexpectedly and was pronounced DOA at the Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada at 11:40pm on Monday, November 19, 2001. Arrangements will be announced by the Koskey Funeral Home.
Mafalda Michels
MICHIGAMME -- Mafalda Michels, age 86 of Michigamme died Saturday, September 8, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming.
A Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of her life will be held for family and friends at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion on Saturday, November 24, 2001 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Msgr. Peter Oberto to officiate. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 am until the time of services on Saturday. A luncheon will follow the Mass. Inurnment will be Northland Chapel Gardens.
Mafalda was born in Baltic, MI on October 1, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Margherita and Emilio Andreini who emigrated from Lucca, Italy. She graduated from Painesdale High School, and lived in the Copper Country area, where she married Frederick Michels of Painesdale in 1937. They lived in Ishpeming and Ontonagon, and after retirement in Michigamme and Tucson. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion and enjoyed cooking, gardening, needlework and crafts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, her brothers Emmett, Bill, and Paul and by her sisters Mary, Theresa and Yolanda.
She is survived by her three daughters- Donna Michels (Michael Hinko) of Streamwood, IL, Jeannette (Gerald) Berke of Woodstock, NY, and Margaret (Rofe) Kenney of Shepherdsville, KY. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion.
Mrs. Elma M. Hamari
NORWAY -- Funeral services were held for Mrs. Hamari of Harrison, Tuesday at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, Norway with Pastor Henry Leino officiating. Interment, was in the Harrison Lutheran Cemetery. Mrs. Hamari died September 11, 2001 at Ledgeview Living Center.
Richard P. Anderson
MARQUETTE -- Richard Paul Anderson, 77, of 317 Brookwood Lane, Marquette, died Monday morning, November 19, 2001 at the home of his niece following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Anderson was born on April 23, 1924 in Marquette to the Andrew and Anna (Marshall) Anderson and had been a lifeling area resident.
Richard was graduate of Bishop Baraga High School and was previously employed as a machinist for the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railroad. Later he and his brother, Faustin, ran the former Anderson Machine Shop on Washington Street in Marquette. He then worked at Marquette General Hospital until retiring in 1986. Richard enjoyed outdoor photography and being out in nature.
Survivors include three nieces, Ann Marie Trepanier of Marquette, Mary Louise Brown of Dayton, OH and Margaret (Gerald) Simpson of Vassar, MI; five nephews, Thomas (Lila) Hobmeier of Hancock, John (Jessie) Hobmeier of Aztec, NM, Robert (Bonnie) Anderson of Madison Heights, MI, Raymond (Rosemary) Anderson of Sterling Heights and Michael (Julie) Anderson of Ann Arbor; also surviving are many great nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents were four brothers, Faustin, Rev. Thomas J., Edward and Joseph Anderson; also one sister, Cecilia Hobmeier.
Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. where a parish prayer service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Shaun Erno officiating. Interment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Allen H. Heikkinen
NEGAUNEE -- Allen H. Heikkinen, 82, of 1101 Owaissa Street, Negaunee died Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility.
He was born May 20, 1919 in Palmer, Michigan to Kalle and Emmi Heikkinen. He is preceded in death by his wife Helmi Lundstrom Heikkinen.
Allen is survived by his son Steven (Kaye Hiebel), Marquette and his children Emmi, Kimberly, WI and Harley, Ishpeming; daughter Kristen (Len Ganz) Heikkinen, Auburn, CA; daughter Carol (Barrie) Williams and their children Amelia, Helena and Mary, Paris, France.
Services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee on Friday, November 23, 2001 at 11:00 a.m.
John M. Nerone
MARQUETTE -- John M. Nerone, Jr., age 58 of 47 Feather Ridge Road, Marquette died unexpectedly and was pronounced DOA at the Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada at 11:40 PM on Monday, Nov. 19, 2001.
John was born Nov. 13, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA to Florence (Siddall) & John M. Nerone, Sr. He grew up in Pennsylvania and earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Combs College in Philadelphia. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and was stationed at K.I. Sawyer A.F.B. Following his service to his country, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from N.M.U. He worked for the Negaunee City Police, the Ishpeming City Police, the Marquette County Sheriff's Dept. and the State of Michigan Dept. of Corrections. He also worked as a musician, both in a band and giving private lessons.
Surviving are his wife, Charlene A. (Russo), a daughter Melissa Nerone, a son John M. Nerone, III, both students at Michigan Technological University, his father John M. Nerone, Sr. New Jersey, a brother, Michael (Thereasa) Nerone, New Jersey, and a sister, Florence Nerone, Pennsylvania, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. John J. Shiverski, pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church will officiate. Interment will be in the Gwinn Cemetery.
The family will greet relatives & friends from 12:00 noon until the time of services at 2:00 PM o Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a college fund to be established for the benefit of John's children.
Richard "Dick" William Johnson
WETMORE/CHATHAM -- Richard "Dick" William Johnson, age 64, of Twin Lakes Road, Wetmore and formerly of Chatham, died unexpectedly in the Emergency Room of Munising Memorial Hospital. Dick was born the son of the late James and Bertha (Smith) Johnson in St. Albans, Vermont on March 14, 1937. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts as an electrical engineer and worked for Bendex Company at the Kennedy Space Center on the Apollo and Mercury missions. Besides Florida, Dick also worked in Kentucky and Baltimore. He had married Lauretta Louise Riker on January 26, 1984 in Florida. He retired from Bendex in Baltimore and he and Lauretta moved to the Chatham area immediately following retirement. Dick had his pilot's license and was a member of a pilot's association and of the U.S. Ultralight Association. He enjoyed his home life and was an advocate of animal rights.
He is survived by his wife, Lauretta Riker; daughter- Debbie (Brian) Flynn of Pittsfield, MA; son- Turk Johnson of Pittsfield, MA; grandchildren- Kyle, Sean, Brianna, and Kery; sister- Marjorie Hedrick of Daytona, FL; his mother-in-law- Anna Louise Riker of K.I. Sawyer; and four brothers and sisters in law.
Deacon Mark Sippola will conduct the funeral service on Friday, November 23, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Chapel in Munising. Friends may visit from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the funeral service.
Berthal G. "Bert" Hansen
ROCK -- Berthal G. "Bert" Hansen, age 75, of the Rock- McFarland area, died Thursday afternoon, November 22, 2001 at the Marquette General Hospital following a brief illness.
Bert was born December 17, 1925 in Escanaba, the son of Thorval Hansen and the former Janey Tappenden and was raised in Lathrop.
Following his military service during World War II (1943-1946) with the US Navy in the Pacific Theater, he returned to the McFarland area. He owned and operated Hansen's General Store in McFarland beginning in 1957 and later owned and operated Hansen's General Store in Rock from 1972 to 1984. Bert formerly retired in 1984, but always kept busy in the business field.
He was a member of the Rock American Legion and the Rock Lions Club and enjoyed working and keeping busy as a hobby.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Joan P. Gobert, in 1991.
Survivors include: 1 Son- Glenn (Lori) Hansen of Rock; 2 Daughters- Roberta (Larry) Koski of Streamwood, IL and Patty (Ron) Parlato of Wells; 4 Brothers- Thorval (Shirley) Hansen of Gwinn, Robert (Karen) Hansen of Rock, Ted (Gloria) Hansen of Green Bay, WI, Eugene (Arlene) Hansen of McFarland; 6 Sisters- Lois (John) Marple of Fairfax, VA, Audrey Winters of Escanaba, Lucille (Leonard) Ontto of Gwinn, Jean (Leon) Arnett of Little Lake, MI, Thora Hansen of Delafield, WI, and Bertie (Dan) Ferry of Erie, PA; 4 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Joan, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rudolph Hansen.
Bert's family will receive friends at the Skradski Funeral Home on Monday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. with Military Rites being conducted at 6:45 p.m. by the Rock American Legion. Funeral services for "Bert" Hansen will follow on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home. Luncheon will follow services. Burial will be in the Hillview Cemetery; McFarland. The Skradski Funeral Home and the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home of Delta Co. are assisting the family.
Charles H. (Croschere) Martin
MIDLAND, MI -- Charles H. (Croschere) Martin, 60, of Midland, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2001 at his residence following a long and heroic battle with heart disease.
Charles was born in Marquette on May 9, 1941. He was employed with the Dow Chemical Company, retiring in 1999 after 23 years of service. Charles enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, motorcycles and auto racing. He also loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren. Charles was also a hockey fan. On August 20, 1962, in Freeland, Charles married the former Barbara "Peachie" Whiddon. She survives him.
Also surviving are three daughters, Brenda (Sam) Marlatt of Grand Rapids, Dena (Mike) Fritz of Midland and Tina Marie (Alan) Simanskey of Midland; grandchildren, Darryl C. Martin and friend Lindsey Stebner, Ashleigh Tripp and friend John Hanson, Rhea May Fritz and KaiLee Anthony; brothers, Henry L. (Lorraine) Croschere, James (Alice) Croschere, John L. Croschere and Lloyd (Elizabeth) Croschere, all of Marquette; sisters, Nancy Croschere of Illinois and Bonneta (Martin) Allen of Midland; sisters-in-law, Irene Croschere of Marquette and Ruth Croschere of Negaunee; and many nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Florence Whiddon of Midland; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe and Dorothy Marsh of Everett; and cats, Buddy and Cubby; special friends, Bob and Mary Ann Minich, Ellen and Gerald Burkett, Mary Lou Carr, Tim McDaniel, Jim and Connie Frye and many other special friends.
Charles was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Rhea (Gore) Croschere; his adoptive parents, Stanley and Gladys (Spitnale) Martin; five brothers, Leslie "Tap" Sr., William, Robert C., Donald and Richard Croschere; and a sister, May Boyle.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 19, 2001 at the Wilson Miller Funeral Home in Midland with Rev. Ray A. Jacques of the Homer United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in the Homer Township Cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews Robert J., Leslie, Michael and Steven Croschere and nieces JoAnne Morrin and Patty Ann Montagna. Memorials may be directed to local hospice organizations or the American Heart Association.
