Samuelson received his B.S.F. and M.S.F. degrees from the University of Michigan, School of Forestry and Conservation in 1936. He served as Class President, was an active member of the Forestry Club, Les Voyageurs and Beta sigma Psi fraternity. Following graduation, he returned to his position with the U.S. Forest Service, working with the Civilian Conservation Corps camps, first in Minnesota and later in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In 1943, he began a long, distinguished career with Kimberly-Clark Corporation, managing woodlands in the United States, Canada and Mexico; retiring in 1976 as the Lake States Woodlands Manager. He was a registered professional forester. He served as chairman of the Wisconsin/Michigan Section of the Society of American Foresters, chairman of the Institute of Wood Research, Michigan Technological University and chaired the Michigan Committee of the American Forest Products Industry. He was a life member of the Lake States Council of Industrial Foresters, the Michigan Forest Association, the Canadian Institute of Forestry, the American and Canadian Pulp and Paper Association and the Society of American Foresters. The Society of American Foresters recognized his contributions to the profession of forestry by presenting Sam its 1968 Distinguished Service Award noting, "We doubt that any other industrial forester in the country has contributed as much to the program as he had. The whole country owes him a debt of gratitude for his untiring and unselfish dedication to his profession." The precepts of Professors Mathews and Allen and Dean Dana had made a lasting impact on Sam's belief in the possibility of reforesting and managing second growth timber production. His imprint is present today. Following retirement, he continued to enjoy camping, fishing, and attending with his beloved wife, every football, lacrosse and soccer game in which his grandsons played. He was a lover of Meeechigan Football and all things Maize and Blue. We thank our father, our grandfather, and our great grandfather for his thirst for knowledge, for his compassion for others and for his love of the outdoors. We love him because he never finished learning, striving and experiencing life to the end. We celebrate a man who lived life to the fullest and shared it freely with a multitude of others; a true steward of the land and a true servant of the human race.
