Robert A. "Bob" Haglund
BEAVER GROVE -- Robert A. "Bob" Haglund, 71, of 336 County Road 480, Beaver Grove, entered eternal life Thursday morning, November 29, 2001, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming following a lengthy illness. He had resided at the facility since October 26.
Bob was born January 7, 1930 in Marquette, a son of the late Alfred Carl and Dorothy (Hawkins) Haglund and was raised in Skandia. On April 23, 1960 he married the former Donna Jean Savard and the couple set about
building the family home on County Road 480 and raising their family. For almost 40 years Bob was employed as a welder with Lake Shore, Inc until the company ceased their operations. He was an avid outdoorsman who
enjoyed hunting and working out in nature. For many years he farmed, raising cattle and also draft horses with which he was able to offer sleigh rides to various groups throughout the winter months. In recent years he assisted his daughter, Jerri, and son, Robert, with their operation, Beaver Grove Bison.
A loving father, proud grandparent, and brother, he is survived by: two daughters, Jerri Haglund of Beaver Grove and Debbie (Todd) LaFayette of Marquette; his son, Robert Haglund of Beaver Grove; two granddaughters, Tiffany and Tamara McHerron; a sister, Margaret (Bob) Swenor of Marquette; four brothers, Oscar (Mary) Haglund of Marquette, George (Nina) Haglund of Beaver Grove, Dave (Gloria) Haglund and Harold (Sandy) Haglund both of Skandia; a sister-in-law, Sharon (Ray) Arpiainen of Skandia; and a brother-in-law, Keith "Skip" Savard of Newberry.
Survivors also include several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, in1999; an infant son, Joseph Haglund; sisters, Bernice Haglund and Betty Wallenslager; and brothers, Dick Gereau, Floyd and Fred Haglund.

Mrs. Dorothy Strohm
ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA -- Dorothy Strohm, 87, passed away Nov. 22, 2001 in St. Petersburg. She was born January 14, 1914 in Chicago, Illinois.
She married Gus Strohm in March of 1944, they lived in Chicago for several years, then moved to Gwinn in 1954. They owned and operated Strohm's Gas Station & Cafe in New Swanzy until 1972. They then moved to St. Petersburg, FL in 1975, where she has lived since.
Survivors include 5 children; Robert (Margaret) Strohm of Gwinn, Richard of St. Petersburg, FL, Lynda (Robert) Casale of Tarpon Springs, FL, Martin Strohm of Gwinn and Debra (Mike) Freeman of Maryland, 7 grandchildren; Robert C. Strohm, Sheri Gaunt, Jodi Hooks, Molly & Sally Strohm, Joie & Sarah Freeman, 3 great grandchildren; Brandon Strohm, Joshua Strohm & Clayton Hooks, 1 sister, 2 brothers and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Gus Strohm and 1 son, Jack Strohm.
Cremation will take place in Florida.
Robert G. Funk
MARQUETTE Robert G. Funk, 74, of 233 Lakewood Lane, passed away Friday, November 30, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient for two days.
He was born July 26, 1927 in Marquette to Harry and Dorothy (Ferris) Funk and was a 1945 graduate of John D. Pierce High School. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in Guam. After attending NMU for one year, Bob worked for Otis Elevator for 22 years and lived in Green Bay and Oshkosh during that time. He returned to Marquette in 1970 and began Marquette Maintenance Masters, retiring at the age of 65. He was a member and lay leader of Grace United Methodist Church, an Eagle Scout and former Boy Scout leader, and a former member of the Oshkosh YMCA. Bob was a life member of Lodge 101 Free and Accepted Masons, Royal Arch Masons Chapter 43, and Lake Superior Commandry #30 Knights Templar. He was also a member of the Royal and Select Masons #72, Ahmed Temple Shrine and the ritualistic team, Valley of Marquette Scottish Rite Masons, Job's Daughters, and Presque Isle Chapter #403 Order of Eastern Star.
He is survived by his wife, the former Geraldine Peterson, who he married in 1950; three sons; Mark R. (Pauline) Funk of Rochester, MN, Brian W. (Randi) Funk of Wallingford, CT and Bruce Funk of Marquette, a sister Helen (William) Johnson of Iron Mountain; five grandchildren, Gregory, Eric, Kristen, Aaron and Brandon and a great grandchild Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by a daughter Karen Dagenais on Apri 19, 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, December 2, 2001 in the Grace United Methodist Church with Reverend Charles West officiating. Visitation will begin at the church at 3:00 PM on Sunday. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Grace United Methodist Church Music Fund or Bay Cliff Health Camp.
Sophia Ann DesArmo
MUNISING -- Sophia Ann DesArmo, age 79, formerly of 132 W. Varnum Street, Munising, died unexpectedly on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at the home of her daughter in Chelsea, Michigan, where she had recently moved to be closer to her family.
Sophie was born on December 8, 1921 in Munising, Michigan to the late Paul and Mary (Mokrynka) Adams. She graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School and attended Wm. G. Mather High School. Sophie married Leo DesArmo on Jaunary 22, 1938. They were married over sixty-one years before he preceded her in death on December 8, 1999. Sophie was a homemaker and she had worked over seven years at Munising Atlas Plywood during WWII. She also spent many years working at the lunch counter of the Munising Co-op. Sophie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and she enjoyed crocheting and baking.
She is survived by her children- Denice (Donald) Thompson of Chelsea, MI, Paul (Janis) DesArmo of Kenosha, WI, Kenneth (Becky) DesArmo of Cheboygan, MI, and Arlene (Terry) Rivord of Jackson, MI; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a sister- Catherine Kinder of Grand Rapids, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sophie was preceded in death by her siblings, Frances Gosselin, Caroline Ducas, Helen Raica, and Michael Adams.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. A Parish Vigil service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Father Dennis L. Borca will conduct Sophie's funeral on Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising and Sophie will be escorted by her grandchildren.
Florence E. Trenerry
GWINN -- Florence E. Trenerry, 91, of 242 Maple Street, Gwinn, passed away Friday morning at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming.
Mrs. Trenerry was born July 20, 1910 in Oshkosh, WI, a daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude (Flory) West and had been a resident of the Marquette area for many years.
Florence is survived by her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Kathy (Joe) Pietro of Gwinn; four sisters, Grace Beyer, Marie Roehrig, Phyllis Tetzlaff and Charlotte Murphy, all of Oshkosh.
Kathy and Joe Pietro wish to thank all those who remembered Florence with calls, cards and flowers or took time to visit her during the two and a half years she was at Mather Nursing Center.
Honoring Florence's request, there will be no services.

NISULA -- Lillian Ellen Bonney, age 74, of Nisula, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2001 at her home.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 4 at 1:00pm at Mission United Lutheran Church. Visitation will be on Monday from 5:00 to 7:00pm at Jacobson Funeral Home and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will take place in the Nisula Cemetery in the spring. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
Cecelia Campana
CRYSTAL FALLS -- Cecelia Campana, age 88, of Crystal Falls, died Saturday (Dec. 1) at the Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette.
She was born August 2, 1913 in Crystal Falls, the daughter of the late Frank and Maria (Carlotto) Simenoni. She attended school in the Crystal Falls and on May 21, 1941 married (Jeano) Campana. Except for a short period of time when they lived in Lansing, the couple made their home in Crystal Falls. Cecelia had worked as a sales clerk at the former Mendelson's Clothing Store in Crystal Falls.
Her husband preceded her in death on September 14, 1979. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Michael in August of 1971 and Dr. Paul Campana on October 12, 1991, three sisters Rena Dalpra, Marion'"Honey" Grattan, and Virginia Corbett, and two brothers Bruno and Etalo Simeoni.
She was a member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church and had been a former member of the altar guild. Cecelia is survived by: 1 son, David (Sally Davis) Campana of Marquette, a daughter-in-law Ela Campana of Vincenzia, Italy, 1 sister, Inez Vargo of Detroit, Michigan, 1 brother, Larry Simeoni of Crystal Falls, 3 grandchildren, Carla Campana of Vincenzia, Italy, Katie and Michael Campana of Marquette. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Friends may call Tuesday (Dec. 4) from 9 to 11:00 AM (Central Time) at the Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Crystal Falls. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at the church. The Rev. Fr. Ray Zuenger, Pastor, will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. The Langenberg Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Dylan Thomas Delarye
WHITE PIGEON, MI -- Dylan Thomas Delarye, 3, of White Pigeo, MI died November 30, 2001 at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo. He was born December 3, 1997 in Kalamazoo a son of James and Michelle (Brown) Delarye who survive along with a sister Courtney; Dylan is also survived by grandparents among which is Barry and Linda Delarye of Negaunee, MI., also a great grandmother and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation will be from 5-9PM Monday at the Rosenberg-Schipper Funeral Home, Ltd., of Sturgis, Michigan. A celebration of the life of Dylan will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday at 2:00 P.M.
Patricia McCarthy Kronquist
MARQUETTE -- Patricia McCarthy Kronquist, 75, of 2002 Wetton, Marquette, died Saturday afternoon at Marquette General Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Kronquist was born on July 21, 1926 in Marinette, WI a daughter of John and Evelyn (Johnson) McCarthy. She had been a resident of the Marquette area since 1963.
Pat was a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Marinette. She attended Marinette County Teachers School, the Oshkosh States Teacher's College and received her LPN Degree from Northern Michigan University.
On September 25, 1948 she married Roy Kronquist in Marinette, WI. Pat was employed for 19 years with the Marquette County Health Department as a LPN and retired in 1988. She was a board member of the Michigan Licensed Practical Nurse Association, former president of the Marquette-Alger LPN Association, a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and St. Michael's Altar Society and also was involved with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Roy Kronquist of Marquette; her mother, Evelyn McCarthy of Marinette; children, John C. Kronquist of Bangkok, Thailand and Mary P. Kronquist of Lansing; a brother, Dennis (Gloria) McCarthy; a sister, Kathleen (Lawrence) Harpt both of Marinette; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 2 pm at St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at the church one hour prior to the mass. Inurnment will take place in the Marinette Cemetery. Reino M. "Muzza" Mattson
REPUBLIC - Reino M. "Muzza" Mattson, age 81 of 302 W. Third Ave. Republic, died Saturday December 1, 2001 at his home in Republic.
Reino was born August 3, 1920 in Republic to the late Andrew and Ida (Saari) Mattson. He served in the United States Army during the World War II Era. He married Mabel Delongchamp on January 9, 1943 in Muskogee, OK. Muzza worked as an underground miner
for the Inland Steel Co. and the Jones & Laughlin Co. at several area mines and later worked as a custodian and bus driver for the Republic-Michigamme School District, retiring in 1981.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years - Mabel of Republic; a son Lawrence (Bonnie) Mattson of Republic, 2 daughters - Marilyn (Raymond) Durant of Marquette and Diane Perry of Republic; 2 sisters - Ruth Switzer of Kansas City, MO and Olga Kangas of San
Diego, CA; 6 grandchildren - Tracy St. Aubin, Scott Durant, Nicole Perry, Stacey Mattson, Bradley Mattson and Tammy Durant; 2 great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers William. Jalmer and George Mattson and 2 sisters - Hilda Kurtti and Anna Windahl.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Inurnment will be in the Republic Cemetery.

Robert C. "Mulla" Tall
ISHPEMING- Robert C. "Mulla" Tall, age 81 of 1017 N. 'I'hird St. Ishpeming passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 1, 2001 at his home.
Robert was born October 7, 1920 in Negaunee to the late Charles & Violet (Liquia) Tall. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. Mulla worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company for 42 years, retiring in 1981 from the Tilden Mine as a plant repairman. Mulla was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus, Ishpeming V.F.W., Ishpeming ELKS, the Wawonowin Country Club and was an avid bowler.
Mulla is survived by a son Michael Tall of Ishpeming; a daughter Patricia (William) Zhulkie of Ishpeming; 4 grandchildren - Andrew & Adam Tall, Mary & Robert Zhulkie; a daughter-in-law Liz Tall of Champion; a sister Betty (Paul) James of Flint, nieces & nephews - Robert (Rose) Saxwold, Gerry Nault, Timothy (Shelly) Saxwold along with other nieces & nephews, foster brothers Robin (Sherry) Gronvall of Ishpeming, Frank (Marcia) Gronvall of Ishpeming and a foster sister Dawn Champion. Mulla was preceded in death by his wife Helen, April 11, 2001, foster mother Doris Johnson, brother in law Robert SaxwoId Sr. and sister in law Toni Poirier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. James Challancin officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Anna Esther Sophia Hendrickson
REPUBLIC -- Esther Hendrickson, age 94, of Box 135K South Republic, died on Sunday, December 2, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming. She was born on January 29, 1907 in Republic, MI to the late John and Johanna (Koskela) Koski, and was the last surviving member of a family of seven boys (Oscar, Emil, Eddie, Edlin, Eino, Elmer and Edwin) and three girls (Esther, Eini and Elmi).
Esther married Otto Hendrickson in Republic in October 29, 1926, and after living in Iron Mountain for three years early in their marriage, they spent the rest of their 61 years together living in Republic. Otto passed away in 1987.
Esther and Otto had five sons - Melvin "Memo" and Kenneth preceded her in death, as did one daughter-in-law, Katherine (Lester). Her three surviving sons are, Wesley (Elaine) Hendrickson of Iron Mountain, MI, Lester (Carolyn) Hendrickson of Mesa, AZ, and Curtis (Susan) Hendrickson of Green Bay, WI. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren - Pamela (Robert) vanBuskirk of Lapel, IN; Lee Duquette of Huntington Beach, Ca; Jon (Beth) Hendrickson of Brandon, FL; Maria (Steve) Hendrickson-Kirk of Chelmsford,
MA; Beth Ann (Daniel) Schumacher of Andover, MA; Duane (Leslie) Hendrickson of Park City, UT; Derwin Hendrickson of Iron Mountain, MI: Stacy (Butch) Schinderle of Iron Mountain, MI; Amy (Gary) Wullbrandt of Tempe, AZ; Robert Hendrickson of Mesa, AZ; Diana Miller of Kenosha, WI; Michael Hendrickson of Green Bay, WI; and Teresa (Scott) Schmitt of Hayward, WI. Seventeen Great Grandchildren -- Scott Hazen, Shannon Templeton, Sam Hazen, Cody vanBuskirk, Nolan Duquette, Ashton Hendrickson, Ian Hendrickson, Brett Hendrickson, Alecia Kirk, Marissa Kirk, Kenneth Schumacher, Nicholas Schumacher, Brianna Schumacher, Hanna Hendrickson, Sophie Schinderle, Kayla Wullbrandt and Chase Wullbrandt; and two great-great grandchildren Tyler and Elizabeth Templeton.
In addition to her direct descendents, she is survived by two daughters-in-law Patricia Hendrickson of Republic and Alice Hendrickson of Scotia, NY; two sisters-in-law Effie and Leah Koski, and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
Her mother was a strong influence in Esther's formative years and she became a wonderful cook, seamstress and homemaker. She was a lifelong and loyal member of the
Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic, and for many years was a member of the church choir, and participated in many church sponsored social activities. She preferred to attend the Finnish language services when they were offered, and was an avid reader of Finnish language newspapers all of her life. When she wasn't reading, she was talking, in either English or Finnish. Anyone whoever visited Esther, and there were many over the years, never had to worry about what to discuss. Esther would make sure there was never a lull in the conversation.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday November 6, 2001 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Burial will be in the Republic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bethany Lutheran Church from 10:00am until the time of services, Thursday. Pallbearers will be Dr. Michael Hendrickson, Derwin Hendrickson, Butch Schinderle, Randy Kurin, Gene Koski and Marvin Koski.
Esther lived a long and healthy life. Her legacy in addition to her longevity will be a genetic contribution to generations of her progeny fortunate enough to acquire those genes that made her the person she was. Her family and friends will miss her, but will carry on with the knowledge that their lives are influenced by something Esther did for them or said to them. We know that she is once again with those she loved.
Joan E. Viau
ALLEN PARK, MI -- Joan Elizabeth (Bahrman) Vieu, Age 69, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 26, 2001. Joan was born on March 11, 1932 to Roger and Ann Bahrman of Skandia where she was raised. Joan enjoyed her family tremendously. She was a passionate golfer and also enjoyed traveling & bowling. She was a loving, kind, and generous friend to all whom had the privilege of knowing her.
She was the devoted and loving wife of Donald Viau whom she married in June 1952. They have resided in Allen Park for many years.
She was a proud mother of four children who will miss her dearly: Dr. Michael (Karen) Viau of Mansfield, OH, Gary (Linda) Viau of Southgate, MI, Susan (Pete) Geftos of Monroe, MI, and Kenneth Viau of Allen Park, MI.
She was a loving grandmother to Jacqueline, Katie, & Michelle Viau, Gary Len & Greg Viau, Nicholas & Angela Geftos.
She also leaves behind a brother Harold (Arline) Bahrman of Skandia, sisters Karen (Gerald) Hytinen, Stephenson, MI, and Carol Christensen, Columbus, NC. sisters-in-law, Bernice (Frank) Oberstar of Marquette, Lucille Davis of Marquette, LaVerne (Tom) Simpson of Chicago, and Shirley Marshall of California.
Joan was preceded in death by her mother Ann Bahrman in May 2000 and her father Roger Bahrman in August 1967.
Funeral services were held at The Martenson Funeral Home in Allen Park on Thursday, November 29, 2001 and Entombment at Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers were Greg Viau, Peter Christensen, Rod Sharp, Gerald Hytinen, Leonard (Sonny) Bater, Barry Bahrman, Mark Stackpoole, & Tom Simpson.
Norman W. "Slick" Frieberg
MARQUETTE -- Norman W. "Slick" Frieberg, 78, of 222 S. Fifth St., passed away Sunday, December 2, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born May 10, 1923 in Covington Twp. to William and Lillian (Syrjala) Frieberg, and had lived in this area since 1940. He was an Army veteran of World War II. As a young man he worked for the CCC Camps and was also a merchant marine working on the Henry Ford II ore boat. He later worked for the City of Marquette and also as a teamster for Clairmont Trucking Co. He was a member of American Legion Post 44 of Marquette, and he loved a good sauna.
Survivors include two daughters, Lauren Reichel of Marquette and Kerry (James) Bonovich of Ishpeming, a son Alan (Tracy) Friebrg of Republic, a brother Raymond Frieberg of Marquette; grandchildren Amy, Josh, Breanna, Brittany and Ali and great grandchild Joanie. He was preceded in death by a sister Beatrice.
Graveside services will be held in the Big Bay Cemetery at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 6, 2001 with Darryl Small officiating. At Norman's request there is no visitation. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.
