William Hill
IRON RIVER -- William Hill, age 82, of 814 Grant Street, Iron River, died Friday (Dec. 7) at the Iron County General Hospital.
He was born November 11, 1919 in Ely, Minnesota, the son of the late Matt and Sophie (Erkkila) Hill. He grew up in Crosby, Minnesota, moved to Ishpeming with his family in 1935, and graduated from the Ishpeming High School in 1938. While in high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society and was a member of the district/ regional basketball championship team in 1938.
He first worked for the Inland Steel Company at the former Morris Mine in Ishpeming as an ore sampler and lab assistant. He entered the U.S. Army in November of 1942 and served during World War II as a Corporal technician in the European, Asiatic and Pacific Theaters. Following his honorable discharge in January of 1946, he returned to Ishpeming and his employment at the Morris Mine as a lab assistant. He was promoted to chemist in 1956 and then transferred to the Sherwood Mine in Iron River in 1961. He worked as a surface laborer until going underground in 1965 as a pipeman/ greaser. He became a dryman in 1974 after a mining accident injured his knees. He retired in 1979 when the mine closed.
On July 19, 1944, while on his last furlough before going overseas, he married the former Olive Hocking at the Mitchell Methodist Church in Negaunee. His wife preceded him in death on April 2, 1992.
In his younger years William enjoyed bowling. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Hill in 1994.
He is survived by: 1 Son, Norman (LuAnn) Hill of Auburn, New Hampshire; 1 Daughter, Debra (Steve) Olson of Iron River; 1 Sister, Eleanor Koski of Flint, Michigan; 2 Grandchildren, Maelynn and Bethany.
Friends may call Saturday (Dec. 8) from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Langenberg Funeral Home- Stambaugh Chapel. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Langenberg Funeral Home- Stambaugh Chapel. The Rev. Douglas Cederberg, Pastor of the Grace Covenant Church in Iron River, will officiate. Burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetery.

Albert J. Zimmerman
NEGAUNEE- Albert ,J. Zimmerman age 85 of 104 Malton Rd. (Woodland Assisted Living) Negaunee passed away Saturday, December 8, 2001 at Woodland Assisted Living where he has resided for the past 2 years.
Albert was born September 18, 1916 in Calumet, MI to the late Jacob & Katherine (Mishica) Zimmerman. Albert attended the Calumet area school prior to going to the CCC Camps. While in the CCC Camps Albert was infected with TB and spent 9 years in a TB sanatorium. He learned the trade of an X-Ray Technician and worked for 29 years at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, retiring in 1980. Albert moved back to Calumet in 1995 and later moved to Negaunee in 1999.
Albert is survived by nieces; Mary (Richard) Berryman of Ishpeming, Kathy Ann (Steve) Perucco of Negaunee, Elizabeth (Marc) Nellist of Troy, MI, and Kathy (Lee) Deitrick of San Dimas, CA, a nephew Rod (Bev) MacLeod of Pismo Beach, CA along with numerous grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and a brother in law Henry Thurner of Negaunee. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
A memorial service will be held at a late date announced by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Inurnment will take place in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
Merton E. "Mert" Starmer
NEWBERRY -- Pearl Harbor survivor, Merton E. "Mert" Starmer, 84, of Newberry, died Friday morning December 7, 2001 2001 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 11, 2001 at 11:00 am on Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry with Pastor David Hueter officiating. SUOMI LOCATION - Yvonne 0. Luoma, age 64 of Rt 1 Box 3166, Suomi Location passed away Saturday, December 8, 2001 at the Bell Memorial Hospital.
Yvonne Was born November 20, 1937 in Ishpeming to the late Vincent and Emma (Olive) DeToma. She worked at the Cedar Motor Inn in Marquette as a cleaning lady for many years and later at the Knights of Columbus in Negaunee for several years. She loved knitting and reading.
Yvonne is survived by her fiancee Edward Liquia of Suomi Loc; a son Randy (Susan) Luoma of Ishpeming; a sister Ruth Hemmila of Ishpeming; 2 grandchildren - Nicholas and Jeff Luoma; 3 stepgrandchildren - Dawn, Brandi and Jamie; a niece Cindy Hemmila and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00p.m. Tuesday December 11, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Cathcart to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Clifford L. "Cliff" Holm
MARQUETTE -- Clifford L. "Cliff" Holm, 91, of 2590 Werner St., Marquette, entered eternal life early Tuesday morning, December 11, 2001, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where he had resided for the past two years. Cliff was born May 10, 1910 in Rock, a son of the late August and Jane (Smith) Holm, was raised in Marquette, and was a lifelong area resident. On November 27, 1930 he married the former Florence M. Durand in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Marquette, and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family. For over 25 years Cliff was employed as a sheet metal worker with the Pellow Roofing Company, retiring in 1972. Cliffwas an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church. A loving father and grandparent, he is survived by: two daughters, Theresa (Peter) Trotochaud of Marquette; and Josephine "Joann" (Otis) Kleaver of Skandia; his grandchildren, Debra (John) Kay, Tina (Dave) Bartovich, Sharon (Leonard) Bodenus, Greg (Sandy) Kleaver, Bonnie (Bill) Baumann, Sherri (Steve) Queen, Terri (Jim Perron) Trotochaud, Sheryl (Frank) Iery, and Lucy (Louie) Vincent; great-grandchildren, Johnnie, Darlene, Billy Jack, Amy Jo, Amanda, Lenny, Jessie, Jenny, Ashley, Bobbie Jo, Dustin, Mike, Joe, Tammy, Frank, Beth, Stephanie, and Vincent; a great-great granddaughter Lauren, and numerous nieces and nephews. ELO, MI -- Curtis Grant, 46, of Elo, died at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN., following surgery, December 11, 2001. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, MI.
Emil Alfred Larson
MARQUETTE -- Emil Alfred Larson, 89, of 6379 US 41 S., passed away Sunday, December 9, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born February 12, 1912 in Skandia to Fred Severin and Hilda (Johnson) Larson and had lived in this area his entire life. Emil enlisted in the Michigan National Guard in 1939 and served with the Michigan State Troops during World War II. After World War II, he remained with the 107th Engineers until 1950. Prior to retiring, he worked for the Ingalls Lumber Company, Brumm Construction and Spear and Sons. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, the U.S. Rifle Association and the Marquette County Humane Society.
Emil is survived by the Wikstrom family and special friend David Monhead, who loved and cared for him, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Olga in 1983.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm Thursday, December 13, 2001 in the Emanuel Lutheran Church with Reverend Chad Christensen officiating. Burial will be in Northland Chapel Gardens. Pallbearers will be Frank Johnson, Peter and Mark Wessman and Jonathan, Leonard and David Wikstrom. Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm this evening at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home.

Raymond Henry Boerup Jr
GWINN -- Raymond Henry Boerup Jr., 72, of 153 N. Pine St., Gwinn, died Tuesday morning at the Tendercare Nursing Home in Munising following a lengthy illness.
Ray was born December 4, 1929, in Lake Forest, IL, a son of Raymond H. and Amanda (Hauri) Boerup, Sr. He was a 1947 graduate of Greys Lake High School in Greys Lake, WI. On July 9, 1955 he married the former Ruth Langset in Detroit.
Mr. Boerup served in the Air Force from 1951 until his retirement as a Master Sergeant in 1972 from the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. He was then employed as a plant repairman for the Empire Mine and retired from there in 1991.
Ray was a member of American Legion Post #349 in Little Lake serving as post commander for three years, the NRA and the Retired Segeants Association. He enjoyed camping, hunting, traveling and jewelry making.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ruth Boerup of Gwinn; daughters, Becci (Charles) Jarvis of Racine, WI and Bobbie (Dale) Jacobson of Gwinn; brothers, Don (Gerry) Boerup of Tucson, AZ and Chris (Nancy) Boerup of Westchester, OH; sisters, Nan Boerup and Shirley (Dale) Walton, both of Augusta, KS; grandchildren, Senja & Adam Jacobson of Gwinn and Sarah Jarvis of Racine; step-mother, Myrtle Boerup of Woodruff, WI; and several nieces & nephews. His parents and a brother, Tommy Boerup preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 11 am in the Gwinn Funeral Home with Pastor Nancy Kauppi officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery.

MARQUETTE -- David D. Pugh, 53, of 427 E. Crescent Street, Marquette, a former public school teacher, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning at Munising Memorial Hospital. He had been in ill health for several weeks. No local services are scheduled.

John Laurich Jr.
EBEN JUNCTION -- John Laurich Jr., age 72, of E2944 State Highway M-94, Eben Junction, died at his home peacefully on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 in the loving care of his family and Northwoods Hospice following a brief illness. He was born on November 26, 1929 in Munising, Michigan to the late John and Mary (Kordish) Laurich, Sr. John graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1948. He entered into the U.S. Navy on March 10, 1949. He served in Japan during the Korean War as an aviation structural mechanic, 2nd class. John was discharged on January 13, 1953. He also served the U.S. Coast Guard as a merchant seaman aboard the C.L. Austin and the Bev Marcell. John married Joyce C. Laakso on June 4, 1955. He began employment with Kimberly Clark on June 20, 1955 as a beater helper in the Beater Room. In 1956, John posted into the Paper Department as a utility helper. John transferred to the Specialties Department in 1958 and progressed to #13 backtender. In 1978, he moved to the Service Operations Department, progressing to tractor driver. In January of 1988, John posted into the Engineering Department as an oiler, which was the position he held at the time of his retirement on January 1, 1990. He was a member of the Eben Apostolic Lutheran Church and the V.F.W.
John is survived by his wife of over forty-six years, Joyce Laurich of Eben Junction; daughters - Cleone Tead of Round Lake Beach, IL and Carrie (Dan) Wolf of Marquette, MI; grandchildren - Jason (Missy) Brisson, Shanna Brisson, Eric Wolf, and Jeffrey Wolf; sister - Sophie Lustick of Skokie, IL, brother - Richard Laurich of Chatham, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his dog, "Perky." Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Julie Milecki.

William L. "Bill" Andrew
ISHPEMING -- William L. "Bill" Andrew, age 81 of 125 N. Lilac St., Ishpeming, died Wednesday morning December 12, 2001 at the U.P. home Health & Hospice's inpatient unit located at Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming.
Bill was born September 8, 1920 in Ishpmeping to the late Richard & Emma (Bennett) Andrew. He was a life long area resident, except for time he spent in the U.S. Army. Bill served his country during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
Bill worked for the Hercules Powder Company and later went to work for Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company, retiring from the Empire Mine.
Bill was a member of the Ishpeming V.F. W. Post #4573. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and camping, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years Mary (Manzoline) Andrew, a daughter, Barbara (Bryan) Johnson of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren Amy Johnson, Julie (Timothy) Talus both of Ishpeming, Katie Johnson of Boston, MA, and Bryan Johnson of Kingsford, 2 great grandchildren Alicia and Brandon, along with several nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by 3 sisters; Murial Magnuson, Eve Franson and Ruth Erickson and 2 brothers; Norman and Paul Andrew.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, December 14, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Rev. Paul G. Donelson to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Woodrow "Woody" Betts
TUCSON, Arizona -- Woodrow "Woody" Betts, 57, died Saturday, December 8, 2001 in Tucson, Arizona, where he had lived since 1996.
Woody was born May 7, 1944 in Marquette to Woodrow and Alma (Mariin) Betts and was a 1962 graduate of Graveraet High School. He worked for the City of Marquette for 29 years, and retired as foreman for the water department in 1996. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Tucson and he enjoyed his new passions for golf and playing the guitar.
Woody is survived by his wife Bonnie Betts of Lansing; three children, Jamie (Chad) Weigold, Woodrow "Chip" Betts Jr. and Andy Betts, all of Marquette; two step-children, Josh (Dawn) Carpenter and Kristi (Eric) Pederson; three grandchildren, Ray and Terina Romero and Ariah Marie Pederson; a brother Gene (Linda) Betts of Santa Barbara, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Joan Nusckiewicz. Woody was a kind, gentle and caring man who touched the hearts of many. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
Memorial services will be held at 6:00pm on Friday, December 14, 2001 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Weber officiating. Visitation will begin at 4:00pm on Friday.

Agnes M. Goyen
ISHPEMING - Agnes M. Goyen, age 80, of 513 N. Third St., Ishpeming, died Thursday morning, December 13, 2001 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp.
Agnes was born August 28, 1921 in Ishpeming the daughter of Fred and Laura (Jandron) Gauthier. She attended the Ishpeming Schools and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include seven children, Daniel (Joyce) Goyen of Pinellas Park, FL, Jerome (Starr) Goyen of Kingsford, Lorilee Weiger of Marquette, Robert Goyen of Ishpeming, Raymond Goyen of Ishpeming, Mary Kjellman of Negaunee and Renee Goyen of Ishpeming; 2 sisters, Lucille (Charles) Delangelo of Iron River and Paulette (Wade) Kruger of Port Huron; 2 brothers, Gerald Gauthier and Raymond (Barbara) Gauthier, both of Ishpeming; along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow in 1971; 2 sons, Thomas and Christopher Goyen; and a grandson, Kurt Goyen.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, December 15, 2001 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Fr. James Challancin to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Curtis L. Grant
ELO, MICHIGAN -- Curtis L. Grant, 46, of Elo, died at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN on December 11, 2001. He was born in L'Anse on March 10, 1955, son of Arnold and Martha (Ollila) Grant. Curtis attended Baraga School and was a lifetime resident. Mr. Grant married the former Jacquelynn (Mukka) in L'Anse on April 12, 1975. He was employed as a bus driver and maintenance employee for the Baraga Schools. He was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie. Curt was also a dedicated member of the Otterlake Volunteer Fire Department, the 1st Responders and the Ottawa Sportsmen's Club. He enjoyed working on automobiles and was a handy household repairman. He also enjoyed working in the garden and landscaping.
He is survived by his loving wife Jackie, sons, Jason (Nicholle) of Negaunee, Chad and his fiance Stephanie of Minneapolis, his mother, Martha of Elo, brothers James of Elo, Steven of California, sisters; Jean (Donald) Hayden of Battle Creek, MI, Gayle (Douglas) Isaacson of Pelkie, father and mother-in-law, Gordon and Rita Mukka of L'Anse. Numerous nephews, nieces and cousins also survive. He was preceded by his daughter Amanda Jean in 1976, and his father Arnold.
A memorial service for Mr. Grant will be held Saturday, December 15, 2001 at 1 p.m. from Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie with Pastor Michael Laakko officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will take place at a later date. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse is assisting the family with arrangements.
David Pugh
MARQUETTE -- David D. Pugh, 53, of Marquette MI died unexpectedly December 11, 2001 at Munising Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
David was born in Polson, MT on December 11, 1948, the son of David R. Pugh and Johanna M. Pugh. David attended Polson Public Schools, graduating as the salutatorian of the class of 1967. He received a bachelor's and a master's degree from Montana State University at Bozeman and a teacher's certificate from Western Montana University in Dillon. He taught high school math in Lodge Grass and Simms Montana; Blackfoot, Idaho; and in the Marquette area. In recent years he worked as an income tax preparer. A Montana native, David enjoyed collecting Montana historical memorabilia. He was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and the MSU Bobcats.
He was preceded in death by his father David R. Pugh. He is survived by his mother, Johanna Pugh of Eugene OR; two brothers, Tom of Eugene and Brian of Polson; three sisters, Mary Jo Pugh of Walnut Creek CA, Betty Wiese of Bainbridge Island WA, and Virginia Kelly of Hood River OR; one niece, and four nephews. David's former spouse Lynndee Brown resides in Marquette with David's beloved dog Misha.

Jane C. Leach
ATLANTIC BEACH, FL. -- Jane C. Leach, 52, a longtime resident of Atlantic Beach, formerly of Marquette Michigan and a graduate of Bishop Baraga High School, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2001. Survivors include her children, Elizabeth Leach of Atlantic Beach, FL and Marc Leach, Tallahassee, FL; her partner, Victoria Kemper of Atlantic Beach; two brothers, Stephen Girard, Green Bay, WI and Richard Girard, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Memorialization will be by cremation. Arrangements by Hardage-Giddens Jacksonville Beach.
