Louis Stan Buckmaster
MARQUETTE -- Louis Stan Buckmaster, 54, of 401 Rock Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Tuesday, December 18, 2001, at his home.
Stan was born April 16, 1947 in Northville, a son of Lloyd and Norma (Beaudry) Buckmaster. He moved to Marquette as a child and was a 1966 graduate of the Marquette Senior High School. Stan then entered the US Army where he served in Vietnam with the First Battalion Eighth Cavalry
Airborne Division. On June 14, 1969 he married the former Mary K. Inch and the couple began to establish their home and raise a family. Throughout the years, Stan worked at the Marquette Bottling Works, UP Office Supply,
owned Northland Office Supply, worked at the Marquette Elks Lodge #405 B.P.O.E., and was a stained glass artist.
Stan always enjoyed helping others, and served as a baseball and soccer coach for many years. Recently, utilizing the Internet, he spent many hours contacting Vietnam Veterans and reuniting them with their comrades, and connecting families who had lost loved ones with veterans who had served with them. Stan loved his family, had a great sense of humor, enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing, and spending time creating his own special
stained glass pieces. He loved watching hockey, especially the Red Wings and N.M.U.
Stan was a member of St. Peter Cathedral, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, held every chair and was past Exalted Ruler of Marquette Elks Lodge #405 B.P.O.E., and was a member of the Jumping Mustangs.
A loving and devoted husband, father, son, brother, and nephew, he is survived by: his wife, Mary K.; two daughters, Lori Buckmaster and her fiance, Jesse Dehlin, and Kari Buckmaster; a son, Andy Buckmaster; his mother, Norma Buckmaster; brothers, Lloyd (Sue) Buckmaster and John Buckmaster; sisters, Kitty Kelly, Alice Buckmaster, and Sandy (Karl) Stenglein; sister-in-law, Pattie Buckmaster; brother-in-law, Jack Tauch;
uncle, Louis (Connie) Beaudry; aunt, Frankie Franchuk; mother-in-law, Dorothy Inch; brothers-in-law, Robert Inch, James (Darlene) Inch; sister-in-law, Sue (Joe) Ramos; special friends, Tim and Sherry, Lance, Emily, and Dwight Downs; several cousins, nieces, nephews, and neighbors.
Stan was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Buckmaster; brothers, Richard Buckmaster and Lawrence "Butch" Buckmaster; sisters, Lola Tauch and Holly Beaudry; and his father-in-law, John Inch.
Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Friday, December 21, beginning at 4:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Msgr. Louis Cappo, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Vietnam Veterans of America Scholarship Fund or to the charity of the donor's choice. Memorial envelopes are available at the funeral home.
T. Gordon Richards
NEGAUNEE -- T. Gordon Richards, 79, 946 Pine St. died at 6:25 AM on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at his home. When Gordie learned of his terminal illness last December he accepted the diagnosis with great resolve. He lived every day with a positive attitude-- again making everyone in his life just a bit more loving and kind. He left this world as he lived in it, conscious of God, fearless of death, at peace, and surrounded by family.
Gordie was born Jan. 25, 1922 in Negaunee to Thomas H. & Maude (Trembath) Richards, was a 1941 graduate of Negaunee High School, and was a life long resident. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was employed by CCI for 40 years, working at various company properties. He retired in 1982 as the Maintenance Supervisor of the Tilden Mine.
Mr. Richards was a member of Mitchell United Methodist Church where he sang in the Men's Chorus, the Sanctuary Chorus, and served on the Board of Trustees for many years. He was a member of the Negaunee Masonic Lodge, the Ahmed Temple and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite.
Surviving are his wife Carol M. (Johnson) Richards, a daughter Susan Roberto, Knoxville, TN, a son Bradley Gordon (Debra) Richards, Negaunee, 5 grandchildren; Scott (Denyse) Roberto, Knoxville, TN, Brett Roberto, Orlando, FL, Patric Roberto, Knoxville, TN, Tracy Richards & Christopher Richards, both of Las Vegas, NV, a sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Janet & Raymond Borkgren, Geneseo, IL, 1 niece & 2 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Services will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday at Mitchell United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Harmon officiating. Pallbearers will be Gordie's grandsons, and friends; Barry Hosking, Ralph 'Barney' Wainio, and Donald Ellis. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mitchell United Methodist Church from 4:00 PM until the time of services at 6:00 PM on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mitchell United Methodist Church in Gordie's memory.
He will be sorely missed. But as his family stated following his death; Gordie said so often during the past months-- "I've lived a good life and I'm ready to meet the Lord."

Wesley James LaFayette
MANCELONA - Wesley James LaFayette, 62, of Mancelona, passed away at his residence on Monday, December 3rd, after a courageous two year battle with brain cancer.
He was born on January 25, 1939, in Marquette to the late Louis and Ida (Johnson) LaFayette.
Wesley graduated from Marquette High School in 1957 and then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served until 1961. After his discharge he became an officer with the Michigan State Police Department. In 1966 he transferred to the Department of Natural Resources as a conservation officer where he served until his retirement in 1989. Since his retirement Wes could be found on any given day fishing on his favorite lake. He devoted his life to the protection and preservation of the wildlife he so loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Wes is survived by his wife, Sharlene Sue; a daughter, Tina Wood and her husband, Joe of Wilmington, N.C.; a son, Mike LaFayette and his wife, Clare of Kalkaska; four grandchildren, Brian and Lesley Wood, and Ashley and Joel LaFayette; two stepchildren, Mike Thorne and his wife, Colleen of Mancelona and Cheri Ottgen and her husband, Ben of Mancelona; nine step-grandchildren; three brothers, Raymond of Seattle, Kenneth of Marquette and John of Fall City, Washington.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward LaFayette.
Visitation was held on the 5th of December at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. The Funeral service was on December 6th at the funeral home with Father Jim Holtz of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church officiating. Interment was at the Coldsprings Township Cemetery.
Oliver A. Warner
NEGAUNEE -- Oliver A. Warner, 72, formerly of 548 Bluff St. Negaunee died at 6:25 PM on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where he had been a patient since 1994.
Oliver was born April 25, 1929 in Champion to Oliver & Donna (Harsh) Warner, attended the Champion schools & was a life long area resident. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was employed as an underground miner at the Tracy Mine until his retirement. He was a member of the Lillian Larson American Legion Post #114, Ishpeming. He was an avid fisherman, hunter & gardener.
Surviving are 2 daughters; Dawn (Robert) Ducoli, Negaunee, Heidi (Robert) Vanos, Grand Rapids, MI, 4 grandsons; Jon (Jane) Matthews, Negaunee, Brian (Kelly) Matthews, Ishpeming, Joseph & Christopher Ducoli, Negaunee, 2 great granddaughters; Tabi & Megan Matthews, Negaunee, 3 brothers; Lewis (Rose) Warner, Ishpeming, Thomas (Jean) Warner, Humboldt, Lawrence Warner, Champion, several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death in parents, his wife, Alice (Jennings) in 1991, 4 brothers; August, Lester, Alva & John Warner, 2 sisters; Marion Peterson & Florence Nevala.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. Scott Harmon, pastor of Mitchell United Methodist Chruch will officiate. Interment will be in the Champion Cemetery.
Laura Hakala
BARAGA -- Laura Hakala, age 86 of Baraga, passed away on Thursday, Decembe 20, 2001 at Bayside Village in L'Anse. She was born November 24, 1915 in Pelkie, daughter to the late Jacob and Hetafia (Wiik) Hakala. Laura graduated from Baraga High School. She lived in the Detroit area for several years, working for Heline Co. She retired and moved back to Pelkie, where she enjoyed being on the farm, and then later moving to Baraga. She was a member of the I Am Temple in Detroit.
Laura is survived by her sister Martha Pudas of Westland, MI, and numerous nieces, nephews great nieces and great nephews. She is preceded in death by five brothers, Leonard, George, Reino, Walter, and William Hakala, and four sisters, Amelia Kero, Lydia Koykka, Anna Kangas, and Helmie Oger.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 23, at 3 p.m. at Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in the Pelkie Cemetery. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
Yvonne Marie (Lydick) Railey
The memorial service for Yvonne Railey will be at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ridge & High, at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, December 26, 2001. Celebrant will be the Rev. Mark Engle; the homily will be delivered by the Rt. Rev. James Kelsey. Family members will be available one hour before the service. No flowers please; those who wish to bring something are invited to bring any kind of "finger food" for the gathering after the service. Memorial contiributions are directed to Lake Superior Hospice or to the Memorial Fund of St. Paul's.
Albert Joseph Savinski
NEGAUNEE -- Albert Joseph Savinski, 75, of 339 Buffalo Road, Negaunee, died at 12:06pm on Friday, December 21, 2001 at Marquette General Hospital where he had been a patient since December 17 and after a several month illness.
Albert was born December 20, 1926 in Marquette to Howard and Lillian Savinski, attended school and grew up there. He was a U.S. Army veteran, earning the rank of corporal as a radio operator serving in Korea and Germany. He married Dayle E. Davis in Tupelo, Mississippi on May 7, 1955. He worked as a laborer, tile setter and mason in Wisconsin and Michigan. He moved from Racine, WI to Negaunee in 1975. He retired from the White Pine Copper Mine.
Al was a member of the Nashville Steel Guitar Club and enjoyed playing the steel guitar for many years. He was a back-up player for Hank Williams, Jr. at a show in Kenosha, WI. He was a member of the Beagle Club and loved to run his beagles and was devoted to them. His hobbies also included hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife Dayle and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 27 at the Koskey Funeral Home. Rev. D. Michael Carriere, pastor of Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church will officiate.
Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 11:00am until the time of services at noon on Thursday.
Carmella (Sciotto) Brewer
LAS VEGAS, NV - Carmella (Sciotto) Brewer, 82, of Las Vegas, Nevada, entered eternal life on November 9, 2001 in Las Vegas after several years of ill health.
Carmella was born in Negaunee, Michigan on March 28, 1919 to Maria DeFiore and Frank Sciotto. She attended the Marquette Public Schools and eventually ventured to the Western part of the country. She had been employed and retired from the Clark County Court System in Las Vegas, Nevada.
She is survived by her brothers, Frank of Marquette and Joseph of Arnold, Missouri; and a sister, Rosemary of Oroville, California. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Phillip, Peter, Arthur and Anthony; and a sister, Frances.
Private services were held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ida Marie Matthews
NEGAUNEE -- Ida Marie Matthews, age 95, formerly of 705 Carr Street, Negaunee, died on Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at the Bay Medical Care Facility in Essexville, Michigan.
Mrs. Matthews was born in Ishpeming on March 12, 1906 to Israel and Breta (Saari) Moilanen. Mrs. Matthews was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Negaunee, where she had been a member of the altar guild and a "pasty lady."
Surviving are her daughter, Rae (Dorias) Helgren of Bay City; 5 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Ray, on October 12, 1993; a grandson, Dorias Helgren, Jr., on December 4, 1968; her parents; 3 sisters; and 5 brothers.
A private funeral service was held at St. John's Episcopal Church on December 22 with Rev. Virginia Peacock officiating. Burial was in the Negaunee Cemetery.
Raleigh Martin Crowe
TROY, MI - Raleigh Martin Crowe, age 79, of Troy, Michigan, died at his residence on December 20, 2001 after a battle with cancer.
Mr. Crowe was born on November 4, 1922 in Middletown, Ohio. He had lived in Troy, Michigan for the past 12 years and had resided in Detroit previously. Mr. Crowe worked as the owner and proprietor of his roofing business, the Crowe Company, from 1946 until 1962. He then went on as the proprietor of the Instasan Pharmakon Pharmaceutical Laboratories from 1962 until 1974. Mr. Crowe was also an entrepreneur.
He was a member of the North End Detroit Lions Club, the Highland Park Jaycees and the American Legion. Mr. Crowe was also a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II as a hard hat diver for 2 years.
Surviving are Mr. Crowe's spouse, Katherine (nee: Lange) Crowe, his wife of 60 years; 1 daughter, Diane Marie (Kenneth) Winkler of Troy; 2 sons, Raleigh David (Helen) Crowe of Negaunee and Roger Peter (Sandra) Crowe of Casco Twp., Michigan; 2 sisters, Kathleen Hauer of West Palm Beach, Florida and Patricia Steck of West Milton, Ohio; 9 grandchildren, James Robert Weaver, Marilyn Deidre Macuga, Jay Raleigh Weaver, Raymond Crowe, Kelly Smalley, Sarah Steele, John Stoup, Sandra Decker and Kristina Bottle; and 13 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 26, 2001 from 3 until 8pm at the A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Road, Troy, MI 48084. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2001 at 11am at the funeral home. Steve Vail will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Beaumont Hospice or the Leader Dogs for the Blind.
Mr. Henry Le Cosby
HESSEL -- Mr. Henry Le Roy Cosby, 76, of Hessel, MI died Saturday, December 22, 2001 At Holland Community Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Kalamazoo and retired from Clark Equipment Company having worked as a design engineer in Battle Creek, MI and Georgetown, KY. Mr. Cosby was a World War II veteran having served in the Marine Corp, he also was a 13 year member of the Les Cheneaux Lions Club of Cedarville, MI and held multiple posts including District Govenor of the Upper Peninsula for 2001.
He is survived by his wife Lois (married for 53 years)
children Susan and Brian Kadwell of Holland, Gary and Kelli Cosby of Fort Mitchell, KY.

Theresa Lorraine Gosiewski
MARQUETTE -- Theresa Lorraine Gosiewski, 77, of 300 Whetstone Village #5, died Sunday, December 16, 2001 at her home.
She was born September 6, 1924 in Rapid City, SD. While living in South Dakota she participated in the famous "Passion Play". She moved to Ishpeming in her teens. She worked at the Mather, and while working there she participated in the documentary "Ishpeming at War." During World War II she worked as a "Rosie the Riveter" at Willow Run, and later worked at the NMU Wildcat Den. In later years she stayed home to raise her family. Her interests were history; her greatest treasures were her children and grand children, though she loved everyone. Theresa graduated from Ishpeming High School.
Theresa is survived by six children; Laura Kinder of San Francisco, Ca, Don Gosiewski of San Jose, CA, Carl Gosiewski of Wittier, CA, Theresa(Charles) Colman of Waukesha, Wl, Mary (Terry) Sims of Mukwonago, Wl and Gina(Richard) Sleeman of Green Bay, Wl, a sister Margaret(Joseph) Juchemich of Rapid City, SD, eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father Thomas Lloyd, her mother Mary Manion, her stepfather Ronald Pilkinton, and three sisters; Marie (Ovia) Ritari, Anna Mae (James) Marra and Ruth(Robert) Eman.
A memorial mass will be held Thursday, December 27, 2001 at 11:00 am, in St. Peter Cathedral with Rev. Thomas Ettolil officiating. A lunch in the parish hall will follow the service. Entombment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens Mausoleum. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Albert J. Zimmerman
NEGAUNEE -- Albert J. Zimmerman, age 85 of 104 Malton Rd. (Woodland Assisted Living) Negaunee, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2001 at Woodland Assisted Living where he has resided for the past 2 years.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2001 at Woodland Assisted Living, 104 Malton Rd., Negaunee, with Rev. Paul Olson officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
Francis B. Penberthy
NEGAUNEE -- Francis B. Penberthy, 80, a longtime Negaunee resident, died on Sunday, December 19,* 2001 at the Richmond Residential Center where he had resided since 1997.
Mr. Penberthy was born January 25, 1922 in Ely, MN and moved to Negaunee as an infant. He was a lifelong Negaunee resident. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, having served under General Patton in Europe. He worked as a police officer for the City of Negaunee for several years and also worked for CCI at various properties, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Penberthy was a member of Mitchell United Methodist Church.
Surviving are 1 son, Gary (Debra) Penberthy and 1 daughter, Marcia Berry, both of Appleton, WI; 2 sisters, Ruth "Elaine" Behrens of Ishpeming and Gloria (John) VanGraber of Burlington, VT; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lenore (Mattson) in 1969.
Honoring his wishes, there will be no services at this time. A graveside service will be held at the Negaunee Cemetery in the spring and will be announced by the Koskey Funeral Home.
