Paul N. Silas

ISHPEMING -- Paul N. Silas, age 87, formerly of 201 Birch Street, Ishpeming, passed away Thursday, January 3, 2002 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming where he had resided since 1998.

Paul was born June 28, 1914 in Ishpeming, MI to the late Godfrey and Clara (Holmgren) Silas. He graduated from the Ishpeming High School, class of 1934. Paul worked as a sheet metal worker for the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company for many years.

Paul was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church of Ishpeming and a former member of the Aircraft Pilots Association. He enjoyed the outdoor activities of skiing and skating in the winter and hiking and camping during the summer.

Paul is survived by four nephews, Robert (Carol) Selfridge of Zephyrhills, FL, John (Marilyn) Pontti of Ishpeming, Michael (Dianna) Pontti of Fairfax, VR and Gregory (Eileen) Pontti of Waialua, HA; four nieces, Carol (Robert) Waters of Ishpeming, Connie (Errol) Moffatt of Tampa, FL, Lynn (Fred) Whaley of Portland, OR and Sue (Robert) Archibald of St. Louis, MO; along with several grandnieces and grandnephews. Paul was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Donald Silas and Roy Johnson; and his twin sister, June Pontti.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, January 7, 2002 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Thomas Lee officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bethany Lutheran Church on Monday from 9:30am until the time of services.

Pallbearers will be Paul's grandnephews.

Memorials may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in memory of Paul.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.

Robert H. Lynd

MARQUETTE -- Robert H. Lynd, 85, of 532 Silver Creek Road, died Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at his home following an illness of one month.

He was born March 25, 1916 in Watersmeet, MI to Earl and Lucy (Carrier) Lynd and had lived in this area since 1936. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served with the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1945. Prior to retiring in 1978, he worked at Cliff Dow Chemical Company for several years and worked as a plasterer for M.G. Jensen Plastering Company for 32 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Laborer's International Union of North America.

Robert is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Elizabeth Hoff, a daughter Linda Kallio of Marquette, a sister Marie Gimel of Brimley, two brothers Gordon (Priscilla) Lynd of Sault Ste. Marie and Raleigh Lynd of Pembine, WI, four grandchildren, Rick and Brian Todish, Cindy (Rob) Wiggens and Roberta Lynd, and four great grandchildren, Tyler, Tasha, Kyle and Wyatt. He was preceded in death by a son Robert Russell in 1981, a sister Eline Gauthier, and a brother Lawrence Lynd.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm Saturday, January 5, 2002 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Engle officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4:00 to 8:00pm on Friday.

The family would like to express sincere thanks and appreciation to Lake Superior Hospice for their help and support.

Roma F. Meyskens

MARQUETTE -- Roma F. Meyskens, 82, of 500 Fisher Street, Marquette, entered eternal life Wednesday evening, January 2, 2002, at Marquette General Hospital where she had been a hospitalized since Sunday. Roma was born July 4, 1919 in Laurium, a daughter of the late Henry and Izetta (LeClair) Grieninger. Raised in Marquette, she was a 1937 graduate of the Bishop Baraga High School. Roma worked for several years as a secretary-receptionist at the former St. Mary's Hospital, eventually meeting her future husband, Rene D. Meyskens, there. The couple were married in St. Peter Cathedral on August 2, 1941 and set about establishing a home and raising a family. Roma enjoyed her role as homemaker and her hobbies and interests included crocheting, making afghans, canning, painting and refinishing furniture, settling down with family and friends for a good game of cards, and shopping, shopping, shopping. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral. A devoted and loving mother and proud grandparent, she is survived by: two daughters, Renee (Ronald) Wicklund and Roma D. Meyskens; three sons, James A. Meyskens, Joseph (Sandra) Meyskens, and Jon (Patricia) Meyskens all of Marquette; her grandchildren, Walter (Patricia) Wicklund, Susanne M. Wicklund, Penny A. Wicklund, Dana (Jeanne)

Langford, Janene (Brian) Talus, Emily Meyskens, Ryan Meyskens, Amber Meyskens, Felicia Meyskens, and Simone Meyskens; great-grandchildren, Cody, Jessica, Karissa, Aubrey, Brett, and Hannah; several nieces and nephews, among them a special niece, Charlene Krieg (Michael) McDonald of Landham, MD. In addition to her parents, Roma was preceded in death by her husband, Rene D. Meyskens, on December 20, 1995; a sister, Ewalda Krieg; and a brother, Curtis "Laddie" Grieninger. Friends may call at the Bishop's Room at St. Peter Cathedral on Saturday, January 5, beginning at 11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Cathedral at 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon with Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick as celebrant. Roma's grandchildren will serve as her escorts. A reception for family and friends will follow in the cathedral hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marquette County Commission on Aging. The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.

Sylvia M. Ojanen

PALMER -- Sylvia M. Ojanen, age 83, of 100 Isabella Ave. Palmer, died on Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at the Marquette General Hospital after a brief illness.

Sylvia was born on October 19, 1918 in Mass, MI to the late Nestor and Hilma (Turpeinen) Ojanen. After graduating from Mass High School, she worked in Detroit for many years. In the early 1960's she moved to Ishpeming. She had resided at the Richmond Residential Care Center in Palmer since 1983.

Sylvia is survived by 4 nieces- Einona (Harlan) Heikkila of Ishpeming, Evelyn (Peter) Alford of Eugene, OR, Esther (Dean) Falls of Strawberry, AZ and Elaine (Arnie) Anderson of Junction City, OR, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers- Eino and Waino Ojanen.

There will be no visitation or services. Inurnment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles W. Allen
MARQUETTE -- Charles W. Allen, age 77, of 201 Cherry Creek Road, Harvey, entered eternal life Wednesday evening, January 2, 2002 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had recently been admitted.

Charles was born February 21, 1924 in Bernie, MO, a son of the late Henry Richard and Myrtle Ethel (Hurst) Allen. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army. Charles worked at a variety of jobs throughout his lifetime: custodian, lumberjack, taxicab driver, and also worked on the Great Lakes ore boats. He was also involved in cutting the right of way for the construction of the Mackinac Bridge. Charles had resided in the Negaunee and Marquette areas since 1973. He was a member of the Marquette Bible Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Melodie M. Allen of West Branch; a granddaughter, Lauren Allen of West Branch; a sister, Dorothy Wagner of Ypsilanti; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday afternoon, January 6 at 2:00pm at the Marquette Bible Church, 1801 Woodland Avenue, with Rev. Wesley Smith officiating.

The Fassbender Funeral Home is serving the family.

Donald C. DeVries

MARQUETTE -- Donald C. DeVries, 72, of 2445 Werner St., died Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born July 20, 1929 in Caro, Michigan to Arthur and Grace (Wakefield) DeVries and had lived in this area since 1996. A veteran of both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and retired as Master Chief Torpedoman's Mate (SS) in 1968.

Donald is surviveed by two sons, Michael of Marquette and Donald of Philadelphia, PA, his mother Grace of Marquette, and a sister Jacqueline (Marvin) Heitman of Marquette. He was preceded in death by his father Rev. Arthur C. DeVries in 2000.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 6, 2002 in the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home with Rev. Ross Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in the veterans section of Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.

Donald George "Tarz" Dale

HARVEY -- Donald George "Tarz" Dale, 53, of 145 Dana Lane, Harvey, entered eternal life Wednesday evening, January 2, 2002, at his home, in the care and comfort of his family and Lake Superior Hospice. He had been in ill health since October.

Don was born September 12, 1948 in Marquette, a son of George and June (Rogers) Dale, Sr. He was raised in the Sand River- Deerton area and attended Mather High School in Munising. He worked for Lindberg Construction for a few years prior to entering the US Marine Corps in May of 1968. He served during the Vietnam Era, receiving the Purple Heart for twice being wounded in the arm. He also was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V", Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with One Bronze Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Rifle Marksman Badge. He was retired from the Marine Corps in January of 1970 with the rank of Corporal. On August 28, 1970 he married Sharon R. Lane and the couple set about establishing their home and raising a family. Don returned to work for Lindbergs for a time, and in 1971 began employment with the Pellow Roofing Company as a roofer. He retired in October, having worked for Pellow Roofing for the last 25 years.

Don's interests and hobbies included hunting, fishing, watching football, enjoying NASCAR competition, and tinkering with cars, having acquired a number of "fixer-uppers" throughout the years. He was a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey.

A very devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather, son, and brother, Don's family always came first. Survivors include: his wife of 31 years, Sharon; two son, Kevin Dale at home and Corey (Moriah) Dale stationed with the US Army at Fort Carson, CO; grandsons, Daniel and Nathan, and another soon to be expected grandchild; his mother, June Dale of Deerton; eleven sisters, Joyce Swanson and Kristie (Charles) Aho both of Palmer, Linda (Dennis) Glasser of Pittsburgh, PA, Paulette McCloud and Shelly McAllester both in Alabama, Patty (Jim) Sims of California, Debbie Todd of Wisconsin; Penny Mathis of Florida; and Teresa (Charles) Hough, Tina (Pete) Ritari, and Kay (Gary) Sims of Marquette; five brothers, Steve (Becky) Dale of Negaunee, John (Patty) Dale of Harvey, Roger (Debbie) Dale in Tennessee, Victor (Rose) Rushford of Pittsburgh, PA, and Danny (Grace) Dale; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Don was preceded in death by his father, George Dale, Sr and brother, Melvin Dale.

Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The St. Louis the King Council Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 7:45 p.m. Sunday evening in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 7, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey with Rev. Guy Thoren and Rev. Lawrence Gauthier, as con-celebrants. Honorary pallbearers will be: Terry Lane, Ralph Lane, Dennis Lane, Mike Lane, Greg Rokuski, and Darryl Silta. A luncheon for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial, with military honors, will be held in the spring at the Deerton Cemetery.

John Adams

MICHIGAMME -- John Henry "Jack" Adams Jr., 72, formerly on Michigamme passed away Thursday at the Mather Nursing Cetner in Ishpeming where he had been a patient the last month.

Born June 22, 1929 in Negaunee the son of John and Edna (Johnson) Adams Sr. He was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Adams was a graduate of Republic High School Class of 1948. He worked as an auto mechanic for Lester Hooper at Hoopers Ford in Republic and later opened his own shop in Witch Lake. He married the former Bertha Siddall December 24, 1967 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming. She preceded him in death in March 1994. A member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan Ishpeming #314, Eastern Star Hematite Chapter #190 and was on the Michigan Board of Review for several years. A 20 year survivor of a kidney transplant which he received May 1981 at Hennepin Co. Hospital in Minneapolis.

He is survived by 1 son Ward (Darlene) Rantala of Marquette; 1 daughter Mrs. Gordon (Lois) Cantwell of Livonia; 2 sisters Mrs. Martin (Betty) Korpi of Republic and Mrs. Dennis (Marge) Beltrame of Manhattan Beach, California; 4 step brothers Martin (Betty) Korpi of Republic, Joseph (Marie) DuMoulin of Republic, John DuMoulin of St. Clair Shores and James (Wilma) DuMoulin of Republic; 4 step sisters Joan LaFrienere of Redford, Mrs. Fred (Jeanette) Schroeder of Green Bay, Mrs. Fred (Jen) Ritchey of Marquette; 2 grandchildren Brian & Michelle Rantala of Marquette; and several nieces & nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by 1 brother & 1 sister.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 AM at the Racine Funeral Chapel in Ishpeming with Rev. James Janofski to officiate. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of services on Monday. Burial will be in the Northland Chapel Gardens.

Robert John Sandell

FT. LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA -- Robert John Sandell (Sandy), 74, passed away on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He had been in ill health for the past 5 months. Mr. Sandell was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on January 16,1927 to the late Herbert John and Lillian (Quayle) Sandell. He is survived by his wife the former Annette Pierce of Ishpeming, whom he married on June 26, 1954 and by a son Richard both of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He is also survived by two brothers, Donald and Harold (Carol) Sandell, a sister, Dorothy Laurich, all of Marquette, a sister, Corrine (William) Hawke of Negaunee, and his aunt, Lucille Boase of Ishpeming, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Robert of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, his twin sister Marian Gonzales of Sacramento, California, and an infant sister Anne of Ishpeming, Michigan.

Sandy had a life long love to travel that began in 1943 when he started working on the Ore Boats. During World War II he joined the Merchant Marines and he served in the Army during the Korean War. While living in Marquette he worked for Brebuers and in 1960 he and Annette moved to Florida where he worked for Kelly Caterpillar until he retired in 1990. He loved to hunt and fish and tell stories and he especially enjoyed visiting with people of all ages. Funeral services were held at the Fred Hunter Funeral Home in Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday, November 24, 2001 with burial taking place at the Evergreen Cemetery in Ft. Lauderdale.

Walfrid Harold Johnson

MARQUETTE -- Walfrid Harold Johnson, 92, of 729 W. Kaye Ave., died Wednesday, January 2, 2002, at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born November 21, 1909, in Marquette to John and Sophia (Anderson) Johnson and was a life long area resident. Prior to retiring in 1973 he worked in the office of Cliff Dow Chemical Company for many years and after its closure worked for MFC First National Bank. He was a life long member of Messiah Lutheran Church, and was also a member of Marquette Lodge 101 Free & Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Marquette, and Ahmed Temple Shrine. He was an avid bowler and also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling.

Walfrid is survived by his daughter Linda Roe of Marquette, three sons, John Johnson of Lawton, OK, Neil (Jonda) Johnson of Port Washington, WI and Alan Johnson of Holmen, WI, eight grandchildren, Kimberley, Kathryn, Kevin, Elizabeth, Douglas, Kristyn, Bart and Erik, and seven great grandchildren. His wife Luella preceded him in death on January 6, 2001.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday, January 6, 2002 in the Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Nancy Amacher and Rev. Tim Bernard officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at the church at 6:00 PM on Sunday. The Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Ida W. Bath
REPUBLIC -- Ida W. Bath, age 83, of 202 E. Kloman Ave., Republic, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2002 at Marquette General Hospital where she had been a patient for the past week.

Ida was born June 24, 1918 in Gwinn, MI to the late Edward and Armalene Agnes (Brazeau) Barry. She graduated from Gwinn High School and attended cosmetology school in Marquette.

Ida was a member of the Republic United Methodist Church, where she was active with the United Methodist Women. She was active in bowling leagues and a former Girl Scout Troop leader.

Ida is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Gary) Koski of Republic and Patricia (Joseph) DuMoulin of Republic; a sister, Doris (Edward) Mussato of Gwinn; four grandchildren, Alan (Wanda) Koski, Rory (Barbara) Koski, Clint (Tracey) Koski and Amanda DuMoulin; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Bath; a son, Robert Bath; and a brother, Edward Barry.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Tuesday, January 8, 2002 at the Republic United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Stevens officiating. Burial will be in the Republic Twp. Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Republic United Methodist Church on Tuesday from 11:00am until the time of services.

Michael A. Dahl

BATTLE CREEK, MI - Michael A. Dahl, age 54, of Battle Creek, MI, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at the Battle Creek Health System.

Mr. Dahl was born on December 1, 1947 in Marinette, WI to Norman and Ruth (Rathmann) Dahl. He was a graduate of Marinette High School, Marinette, WI, class of 1966 and then went on to attend Northern Michigan University. Mr. Dahl joined the U.S. Air Force in June of 1966, retiring in July of 1986 as Master Sgt. at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. He had served in VietNam from 1966 to 1967. After retiring from the Air Force, Mr. Dahl joined the Department of Defense and was currently a GS-11 Supply Systems Analyst. He married his wife, Linda M. Goodlet on March 2, 1968.

Mr. Dahl was baptized into church on December 21, 1947. He was an active member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and active on their Board of Elders. He was a Life Member of V.F.W. Post 5670 in Gwinn. He spent 25 years officiating slow and fast pitch softball and was fortunate to umpire state tournaments as well as national tournaments in the Midwest. Mr. Dahl also enjoyed working in his garden, bowling, swimming and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Linda M. Dahl; three sons, Mark and Matthew Dahl of Battle Creek and Tim Dahl of Marquette; a brother, David (Mary) Dahl of Appleton, WI; four sisters, Karen (Orville) Royer of Hanska, MN, Lynn Faber and Nancy Olson of Milwaukee, WI and Susan (Bryan) Sowatzke of Waukesha, WI; and two sisters-in-law, Nancy Folstad of Douglas, MI and Brenda Goodlet of Green Bay, WI.

Funeral services will be held in Battle Creek at 10:00am on Monday, January 7, 2002 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary Grant officiating. Visitation will be after 12 noon on Sunday, January 6, 2002 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, also in Battle Creek. The family will be present from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newbre Cemetery, with Military Committal by the United War Veterans Council.

Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church or the Cancer Society.

NEWBERRY -- Steven L. Brow, 46, of Newberry, died Saturday morning, January 5, 2002 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 8, 2002 at 11:00am at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Newberry with Fr. Paul Karottekunnel and Fr. Ted Brodeur of St. Mary's Cathedral in Sault Ste. Marie concelebrating. Rite of Committal will take place at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.

Friends may call at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry on Monday, January 7, 2002 from 4-7pm with Prayers for the Deceased to be recited at 6:00pm.
