Betty Ann L'Huillier
MARQUETTE -- Betty Ann L'Huillier, 73, of Marquette, died Wednesday afternoon, January 9, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming where she had resided since July of 2001.
Miss L'Huillier was born on September 20, 1928 in Marquette to the late Jospeh L. and Marie A. (Sievers) L'Huillier and was a lifelong area resident. She had attended the former Bishop Baraga High School in Marquette.
Betty is survived by one brother, Joseph (Joanne) L'Huillier of Marquette; four sisters, Tuckey (Jerry) Swajanen of Sterling Heights, MI, Frances (William) Bell of Phoenix, AZ, Elaine Shields of East Pointe, MI and Judy Malmgren of Phoenix, AZ; also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents was a brother, Donald L' Huillier.
A private Memorial Mass will be held at a later date with burial to follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Karen L. Morcom
ISHPEMING -- Karen L. Morcom, age 61 of 408 Washington St. Ishpeming passed away unexpectedly Thursday, January 10, 2002 at her home.
Karen was born December 7, 1940 in Ishpeming to Marie (Steede) and the late William H. Morcom. Karen was a life long area resident, a graduate of Ishpeming High School, class of 1958.
Karen worked as a cashier of Berts IGA, and Al's Party Store and also helped at the Senior Center in Negaunee.
Karen is survived by her mother Marie Morcom of Ishpeming, 2 sisters; Marlene (James) Meyers, & Cindy Bunce, 2 brothers; Gerald (Diane) Morcom & Terry (Judy) Morcom, a sister in law Sharon Morcom all of Ishpeming, numerous nieces & nephews. Karen was preceded in death by her father William Morcom Sr., a brother William Morcom Jr. and a niece Jolene Morcom.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Fr. James Challancin officiating. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery. Friends may call at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Honorary pallbearers will be Karen's nephews, Gerald Morcom Jr., Brian Morcom, Andrew Meyers, Brett Meyers, Billy Morcom, David Bunce & Eric Bunce.
Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church Memorial Fund in memory of Karen.
Mae Elaine Mackey
REPUBLIC -- Mae Elaine Mackey, age 70, of 305 Kloman Ave. Republic passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2002 at her home in Republic under the loving care of the Lake Superior Hospice Association.
Elaine was born May 8, 1931 in Republic the daughter of the late Victor and Edla (Kerkela) Suomi. She was a graduate of the Republic High School, Class of 1949. She worked as a bookkeeper at the former Farmers Co-op in Republic and later at the Mr. B's clothing store also in Republic. She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and enjoyed craftwork including making dolls and afgans.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years- James Mackey of Republic; a daughter Debra (Gary) Schultz and grandson Todd Schultz all of Tavares, FL; a sister- Aileen (Eldon) Jasa of Karney, NB; a brother Ben (Arlene) Suomi of Republic; a brother-in-law Wallace Mackey of Republic; along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters- Sylvia Mattson and Helen Suomi and two brothers- Leo and Emil Suomi.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2002 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Burial will be in the Republic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bethany Lutheran Church from 10:00 AM until the time of services on Saturday.
Pallbearers will be Wallace Mackey, Ray Mattson Jr., C. Raymond Mattson and Wayne Bartle.
Memorials may be directed to either the Lake Superior Hospice Association or the Bethany Lutheran Church in Elaine's memory.

Dr. Kenneth E. Rowe, M.D.
CALUMET -- Dr. Kenneth E. Rowe, M.D., 71, a resident of Calumet Ave., Calumet, passed away on Thursday evening, January 10, 2002, at the Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center.
Ken was born on August 28, 1930 in Swedetown, MI, a son of John and Marnie (Kargela) Rowe and attended the local schools of the area, graduating from Calumet High School in 1948. He attended Michigan Technological University and Northern Michigan University before graduating from the University of Michigan Medical School, earning Master of Public Health from the University of Minnesota.
Upon completion of medical school and an internship at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Ken served in Italy for two years as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. After spending eight years in private medical practice, he began a career in public health. He served as health officer and medical director of the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department until his retirement in 1993. During his 31 years in public health, he also directed the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department for seventeen years and served a one year term as Deputy Director and Chief Medical Director of the Michigan Health Department in Lansing.
Ken's commitment to education and community service included twelve years as a member of the CLK Board of Education and Chair of the Copper Country United Way. Ken was a founding director of the U.P. Health Education Corporation, helping to establish the first medical school in the Upper Peninsula. He coached several youth hockey teams for the CLK Hockey Association. Ken's love of hockey was further manifested by virtue of his involvement as a partner in the Copper Country Chiefs professional hockey team in the 1970's. Ken devoted many years of service to his beloved Michigan Technological University. He served an eight year term on the Board of Control, including appointments as vice-chair and chairman of the Board. Ken was a member of the MTU athletic council and volunteered as team physician from 1976 to 1993. In 1993, he was inducted into the MTU Sports Hall of Fame. He was honored with numerous awards including the Michigan State Medical Society's Community Service Award and the Roy Manty Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Health Officer's Association. He is a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Calumet, participating in various activities of the church.
In recent years, Ken enjoyed fishing the waters of Isle Royale with family and friends, traveling to his grandchildren's sporting events, playing his clarinet and devoting time in the care of his wife, Marge.
Ken married Margaret Lamutt on April 4, 1953 in Laurium.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a son, John.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret; one daughter, Karen (Craig) Boggio of Jackson, WI; four sons, Vern (Lana) Rowe of Rapid City, MI, Steven (Stephanie) Rowe of Laurium, David (Mary) Rowe of Golden, CO and Thomas (Laura) Rowe of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; ten grandchildren, Adrian, Kyle, Crystal, Peter, Sophie, Kenneth John, Sarah, Joshua, Kourtney and David; one brother, Verne (Elsie) Rowe of Laurium; one aunt, Elsie Kargela of Hubbell; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet at 11:00am with the Rev. Peter Vorhes to officiate. Friends may call at the Erickson-Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet on Sunday from 2-8pm and on Monday from 4-8pm and one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.
Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family has established the Dr. Ken Rowe Memorial Fund to benefit the community. Donations may be dropped off at any of the Superior National Banks in the area.
Robin J.R. Murphy
MARQUETTE -- Robin J.R. Murphy, 48, of 316 Pine Street, Marquette, died Thursday afternoon due to an apparent heart attack.
Mr. Murphy was born June 22, 1953 in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of Robin D. and LaVerne Murphy.
Robin worked as an accountant for Taxi Tycoon in Marquette and he also spent much of his time volunteering with local groups in the area.
He is survived by his mother, LaVerne Bilderbeck of Detroit; step-mother, Pina Murphy of Marquette; brothers, Jeremiah (Sherri) Murphy of Cadillac and Charles Murphy of Saudi Arabia; a sister, Faye Murphy of Detroit; and nephews, Daniel Ryan, Patrick Joseph and Sean Murphy. His father, Robin D. Murphy preceded him in death.

Theodore "Tedd" Glenn Sulik
MARQUETTE -- Theodore "Tedd" Glenn Sulik, 49, of 407 Magnolia Street, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, died Thursday in Marquette.
Tedd was born September 30, 1952 in Detroit, a son of Theodore and Joyce (0rth) Sulik. Tedd worked as a self-employed landscape architect.
He will be remembered by his family as a kind and colorful person who was always willing to help those in need and often showed that by taking in stray pets.
Tedd is survived by his wife, Rita Sulik of New Smyrna Beach, FL; children, Trina Sulik and Trista (Arden) Herron, both of New Smyrna Beach; parents, Ted and Joyce Sulik of Marquette; a grandchild, Abijah Herron of New Smyrna Beach; and brothers, Keith (Patti) Sulik of Chicago and Dr. Greg Sulik of Marquette.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Captain David H. McClintock
MARQUETTE -- Captain David H. McClintock, age 89, of 1023 N. Front Street, Marquette, died Friday morning at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.
Capt. McClintock was born February 26, 1912 in Benton Harbor, MI, a son of the late Wayne and Myrtle (Hayward) McClintock. He was a 1935 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Capt. McClintock married Mary Kirby Patterson in 1938 and they remained married for over 50 years before her death in 1988.
He spent most of his 30-year career in the Navy in submarine service. During WWII, he served as Commanding Officer of the USS Darter, which contacted and reported to General MacArthur's forces the approach of the Japanese Fleet enroute to Leyte Gulf in the Pacific Ocean. Firing the first shot of the battle for Leyte Gulf, the Darter sank the heavy cruiser Atago, flagship of the Japanese Commander-in-Chief and heavily damaged a second cruiser. For heroic service in that command, he was awarded the Navy Cross and the Bronze Star Medal.
Capt. McClintock was also awarded the Silver Star, the Gold Star and numerous other decorations and medals in connection with his Navy service.
After retiring from the Navy in 1965, Capt. McClintock became Director of Development at Northern Michigan University and played a key role in the expansion of campus buildings in the late 1960's.
He is survived by his sons, Wayne P. (Twyla) McClintock of Greely Hill, CA and David H. (Sandra) McClintock, Jr. of Lexington, Massachusetts; a daughter, Emily Ann (Ben) Gibson of Tulsa, OK; brother, Walter (Marie) McClintock of Marquette; a niece, Ann (Jim) Savera of Marquette; nephews, William (Leslie) McClintock and Robert (Brady) McClintock both of California; cherished friend, Rose Mary Zenti; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at 12 noon in St. Peter's Cathedral with Rev. Msgr. Louis C. Cappo officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday in the Bishop's Room of the church from 10:00am until the time of services. Interment will take place in Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to the Marquette Maritime Museum, McClintock exhibit, PO Box 1096, Marquette, MI 49855.

NEWBERRY -- John O. Panula, 89, of Newberry, died Friday morning, January 11, 2002 at the Luce County Annex in Newberry.

June E. Thierbach
WITCH LAKE -- June E. Thierbach, age 80, of Rt. 1 Box 43, Republic (Witch Lake), passed away Saturday, January 12, 2002 at the Bell Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient since January 2, 2002.
June was born May 14, 1921 in Oak Park, IL to the late Bernard and Celia (Hoeppner) Lehnhardt. She lived in Melrose Park and Bellwood, IL and attended Proviso High School in Maywood, IL where she graduated from in 1939.
June worked as a newspaper reporter for the Elgin Courier News along with being a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, baking and most of all writing, especially poems. June was a resident of Upper Marlboro, MD for ten years prior to retiring to Republic, MI on April 25, 1985. She was a member of the Golden Age Club of Republic.
June is survived by her husband, whom she married September 15, 1940, Frederick C. Thierbach; three children, Evelyn Kay (Kenneth) Huddleston of Crossville, TN, Frederick D. (Kristine) Thierbach of Scottsdale, AZ and Edward E. (Lisa) Thierbach of Ann Arbor, MI; a brother, Howard (Dorene) Twombly of Round Lake, IL; a sister, Carol (Howard) Glefky of Winterport, ME; two grandchildren, Sheryl (Clay) Jenkins and David Thierbach; and three great grandchildren, Emily, Ashley and Nathan Jenkins. June was preceded in death by her parents and step-father Howard Twombly.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at the First Baptist Church of Witch Lake with Pastor James Janofski officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Gardens, Oakbrook Terrace, IL.

James E. Harden
ALSTON, MI -- James E. Harden, 44, of Alston died Saturday, January 12, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident in Baraga. Jim was born November 12, 1957 in Detroit, MI, son of Kenneth and Eileen (Stapleford) Harden. He attended schools in Livonia and L'Anse graduating in 1975. Jim then enrolled at Michigan Tech where he majored in electrical engineering. Jim was employed at Celotex Corp. for several years, and then worked as an instrument technician for Cleveland Cliffs Co. for 10 years. At the time of his death, he was an electrical technician for the Stone Container Corp. in Ontonagon, MI. Jim was an avid outdoorsman, loved hunting, fishing and boating. He was a member of Grace Free Lutheran Church in Pelkie, the ABATE Motorcycle Club, ad the Relatively North Skydiving Club. For several years, he served on the Arvon Township School Board and was a member of the American Legion Post #144 in L'Anse. Jim was a member of the armed forces, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the nuclear submarine USS Georgia from 1981 to 1987. In May 1997, he married the former Carmen Hulkkonen in Nisula. Mr. Harden is survived by his loving wife, Carmen, sons Jimmer (Tara) Harden and Jimmer's mother, Betty Jane of L'Anse, Tyler, Jeffery and Christopher at home; daugher Jerri at home and stepdaughter Jenny of Florida; his mother Eileen Harden of Baraga, and grandson Dylan. In addition, he is survived by 5 brothers; Gary (Heidi) Harden of Bessemer, MI, David (Marilyn) Harden of Baraga, Neil (Nancy) Davis of Farmington, MI., Kenneth (Cindy) Harden of Monroe, MI, Fredrick (Ramona) Harden of Denver, IN; 3 sisters, Twila (William) Apger of Calumet, Donna Davis of Rush City, M.N. and Eileen Vance of L'Anse. Jim is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. His father preceded him in death in 1976.
Funeral services for Mr. Harden will be held Wednesday January 16, 2002 at 1 pm from the Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie, with pastor Michael Laakko officiating. A family intermenty will take place at a later date. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday, January 15, from 6 until 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Area veterans will accord military honors at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel. L'Anse is assisting the family with arrangements.
Julia H. Ross
BARAGA -- Julia H. Ross, age 88 of Baraga, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2002 at her home. The funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19, at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Friday from 6-8:00p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate.
