Betty Ann L'Huillier
MARQUETTE -- Betty Ann L'Huillier, 73, of Marquette, died Wednesday afternoon, January 9, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming where she had resided since July of 2001.

Miss L'Huillier was born on September 20, 1928 in Marquette to the late Jospeh L. and Marie A. (Sievers) L'Huillier and was a lifelong area resident. She had attended the former Bishop Baraga High School in Marquette.

Betty is survived by one brother, Joseph (Joanne) L'Huillier of Marquette; four sisters, Tuckey (Jerry) Swajanen of Sterling Heights, MI, Frances (William) Bell of Phoenix, AZ, Elaine Shields of East Pointe, MI and Judy Malmgren of Phoenix, AZ; also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents was a brother, Donald L' Huillier.

A private Memorial Mass will be held at a later date with burial to follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Karen L. Morcom

ISHPEMING -- Karen L. Morcom, age 61 of 408 Michigan Technological University and Northern Michigan Medical School, earning Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan Health Department in Lansing.

Ken's commitment to education and community service included twelve years as a member of the CLK Board of Education and Chair of the Copper Country United Way. Ken was a founding director of the U.P. Health Education Corporation, helping to establish the first medical school in the Upper Peninsula. He coached several youth hockey teams for the CLK Hockey Association. Ken's love of hockey was further manifested by virtue of his involvement as a partner in the Copper Country Chiefs professional hockey team in the 1970's. Ken devoted many years of service to his beloved Michigan State Medical Society's Community Service Award and the Roy Manty Distinguished Service Award from the Wisconsin Rapids, WI; ten grandchildren, Adrian, Kyle, Crystal, Peter, Sophie, Kenneth John, Sarah, Joshua, Kourtney and David; one brother, Verne (Elsie) Rowe of Laurium; one aunt, Elsie Kargela of Hubbell; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet at 11:00am with the Rev. Peter Vorhes to officiate. Friends may call at the Erickson-Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet on Sunday from 2-8pm and on Monday from 4-8pm and one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.

Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family has established the Dr. Ken Rowe Memorial Fund to benefit the community. Donations may be dropped off at any of the Superior National Banks in the area.

Robin J.R. Murphy

MARQUETTE -- Robin J.R. Murphy, 48, of 316 Pine Street, Marquette, died Thursday afternoon due to an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Murphy was born June 22, 1953 in St. Louis, Florida, died Thursday in Marquette.

Tedd was born September 30, 1952 in Detroit, a son of Theodore and Joyce (0rth) Sulik. Tedd worked as a self-employed landscape architect.

He will be remembered by his family as a kind and colorful person who was always willing to help those in need and often showed that by taking in stray pets.

Tedd is survived by his wife, Rita Sulik of New Smyrna Beach, FL; children, Trina Sulik and Trista (Arden) Herron, both of New Smyrna Beach; parents, Ted and Joyce Sulik of Marquette; a grandchild, Abijah Herron of New Smyrna Beach; and brothers, Keith (Patti) Sulik of Chicago and Dr. Greg Sulik of Marquette.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Captain David H. McClintock
MARQUETTE -- Captain David H. McClintock, age 89, of 1023 N. Front Street, Marquette, died Friday morning at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

Capt. McClintock was born February 26, 1912 in Benton Harbor, MI, a son of the late Wayne and Myrtle (Hayward) McClintock. He was a 1935 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Capt. McClintock married Mary Kirby Patterson in 1938 and they remained married for over 50 years before her death in 1988.

He spent most of his 30-year career in the Navy in submarine service. During WWII, he served as Commanding Officer of the USS Darter, which contacted and reported to General MacArthur's forces the approach of the Japanese Fleet enroute to Leyte Gulf in the Pacific Ocean. Firing the first shot of the battle for Leyte Gulf, the Darter sank the heavy cruiser Atago, flagship of the Japanese Commander-in-Chief and heavily damaged a second cruiser. For heroic service in that command, he was awarded the Navy Cross and the Bronze Star Medal.

Capt. McClintock was also awarded the Silver Star, the Gold Star and numerous other decorations and medals in connection with his Navy service.

After retiring from the Navy in 1965, Capt. McClintock became Director of Development at Northern Massachusetts; a daughter, Emily Ann (Ben) Gibson of Tulsa, OK; brother, Walter (Marie) McClintock of Marquette; a niece, Ann (Jim) Savera of Marquette; nephews, William (Leslie) McClintock and Robert (Brady) McClintock both of Michigan University and played a key role in the expansion of campus buildings in the late 1960's.

He is survived by his sons, Wayne P. (Twyla) McClintock of Greely Hill, CA and David H. (Sandra) McClintock, Jr. of Lexington, California; cherished friend, Rose Mary Zenti; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at 12 noon in St. Peter's Cathedral with Rev. Msgr. Louis C. Cappo officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday in the Bishop's Room of the church from 10:00am until the time of services. Interment will take place in Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to the Marquette Maritime Museum, McClintock exhibit, PO Box 1096, Marquette, MI 49855.

James E. Harden

ALSTON, MI -- James E. Harden, 44, of Alston died Saturday, January 12, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident in Baraga. Jim was born November 12, 1957 in Detroit, MI, son of Kenneth and Eileen (Stapleford) Harden. He attended schools in Livonia and L'Anse graduating in 1975. Jim then enrolled at Georgia from 1981 to 1987. In May 1997, he married the former Carmen Hulkkonen in Nisula. Mr. Harden is survived by his loving wife, Carmen, sons Jimmer (Tara) Harden and Jimmer's mother, Betty Jane of L'Anse, Tyler, Jeffery and Christopher at home; daugher Jerri at home and stepdaughter Jenny of Florida; his mother Eileen Harden of Baraga, and grandson Dylan. In addition, he is survived by 5 brothers; Gary (Heidi) Harden of Bessemer, MI, David (Marilyn) Harden of Baraga, Neil (Nancy) Davis of Farmington, MI., Kenneth (Cindy) Harden of Monroe, MI, Fredrick (Ramona) Harden of Denver, IN; 3 sisters, Twila (William) Apger of Calumet, Donna Davis of Rush City, M.N. and Eileen Vance of L'Anse. Jim is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. His father preceded him in death in 1976.

Funeral services for Mr. Harden will be held Wednesday January 16, 2002 at 1 pm from the Mission United Lutheran Church, Pelkie, with pastor Michael Laakko officiating. A family interment will take place at a later date. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday, January 15, from 6 until 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Area veterans will accord military honors at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel. L'Anse is assisting the family with arrangements.

Julia H. Ross

BARAGA -- Julia H. Ross, age 88 of Baraga, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2002 at her home. The funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19, at 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobson Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Friday from 6-8:00p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in the Pelkie Cemetery in the spring. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is assisting the family.
