Susan E. "Susie" Tuch
MARQUETTE -- Susan Elizabeth "Susie" Tuch, 61, of 248 N. Seventh Street, Marquette, died Tuesday morning, January 15, 2002 at her home with her family at her side.
Mrs. Tuch was born on July 14, 1940 in Marquette to the late Clarence "Honey" and Jayne (Hogan) Lyons and had been a lifelong Marquette resident. She was a 1958 graduate of the Graveraet High School.
Susie worked with the Paine Weber investment firm during her junior and senior years in high school. She then worked for 28 years as an administrative assistant at Child and Family Services. She also was employed by the State of Michigan Commerce Department for approximately four years. At the time of her death, she was employed with the Michigan Employment Security Commission.
Susie's hobbies included working in her garden, cooking, reading, spending time at camp, family activities, traveling, but most importantly being a full time mom to her three sons and her husband, Carl. She found great employment in watching her husband perform with the Marquette Male Chorus and attending her sons scholastic and sports functions.
Susie is survived by her husband, Carl R. Tuch whom she married on September 1, 1962 at St. Michael's Church in Marquette; three sons, Jonathan Tuch of Naperville, IL, Jeffrey Tuch of Duluth, GA and Jamie Tuch and his friend, Rita Flinn of Menominee, MI; three sisters, Carol (Harold) Sandell of Marquette, Mary (David) Roberts of Greenland, NH and Judy (Ron) Hataja of Champlin, MN; two brothers, George Lyons of Phoenix, AZ and Brian Lyons of Marquette; also surviving are three nephews and two nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Shaun Erno officiating. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the mass.

William A. Bradway
NORTHLAND, MI -- William A. Bradway, age 77, of 70361 County Road 426, Northland passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at the family home. He was born May 11, 1924 in Little Rock, AK and was the son of William and Alma (Owens) Bradway. As a young child he moved from Little Rock, AK to Hendricks and attaneded school. Following school, Willima did woods work, farming and worked on the ore docks in Escanaba until enlisting in the Navy at age 18. He served in the Nacy and during WWII was stationed in the Asiatic Pacific until he was honorably discharged after war. He married the former Inez Roberts on November 22, 1947 in Escanaba. He then worked for C.R. Meyers at the paper mill and the Hennes Erecting in Milwaukee. The family moved to Appleton, Wisconsin when Hennes Erecting opened an office at that location and he worked for the company until 1985 retireing as president. Shortly after retirement, William and his wife Inez moved back to Northland. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother George Bradway and one sister Melba Myers.

Bradway is survived by his wife Inez Bradway, Northland, 2 sons, David (Joy) Bradway, Oshkosh, WI and Steve Bradway, Appleton, WI, 3 daughters, Barbara (Mike) Adrian, Appleton, WI, Susan (Rod) Henschel, Appleton, WI and Carolyn (Ray) Klecker, Middleton, WI, 8 grandchildren, Jessie Poquette and Kevin Bradway, Peter and Andrew Adrian, Billy and Molly Henschel, Brianna and Hallie Klecker, and 2 sisters, Irma (Leo) Buchcuski, Powers and Rose Sisto, Florida.
Visitation will be held on Saturday at the Wells Township Hall fom 10:30-11:30 a.m. Funeral services for William A. Bradway will be held at 11:30 a.m. att he Wells Township Hall with Rev. Lowell Fox officiating. Burial wll be in the Riverview Cemetery at Northland. A lunch will follow at the Township Hall.

Eleanor S. West
NEGAUNEE -- Eleanor S. West, age 87, of 2916 3rd Ave. South, Apt. #18, Escanaba and formerly of 445 Peninsula St., Negaunee, died at 12:00 midnight on Thursday, January 17, 2002 at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba where she had been a patient for 1 week.
Eleanor was born March 11, 1914 in Crystal Falls to Albert and Mary (Steddick) Drake. She worked as the Deputy Treasurer of Iron County for 7 years. She moved to Negaunee in 1941 and worked as a dental assistant and receptionist for Dr. S.J. Bessolo for 17 years. She had lived in Escanaba for the past 3 years.
Mrs. West was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee and the Altar Society. She enjoyed crafts, traveling and loved children. She and her husband spent winters in Arizona for many years.
Surviving are one sister, Easter Rampanelli of Iron Mountain; 3 nieces, Suzanne (Dr. John) Bird of Northbrooke, IL, JoAnn Cartwright of Aurora, CO and Karen (Blair) Semke of Sheboygan, WI; 2 nephews, Francis (Carol Sue) Drake of Iron Mountain and Pat Drake; several great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Einar West on January 31, 1996 and 2 brothers, Francis and Joseph Drake.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00pm on Monday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee with Rev. Lawrence Gauthier officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Crystal Falls. Pallbearers will be Francis and Todd Drake, Kevin Koch, Dan Landmark, Mike Juidici, Jerry Penny and Louis "Reno" Paris. Friends may call at the St. Paul Church from 11:00am until the time of services at 1:00pm on Monday.
A Memorial Mass in memory of Eleanor will be celebrated at the Bishop Noa Home Chapel in Escanaba at 10:30am today (Saturday).

Hope W. Dunne
NEW ORLEANS, LA -- Hope W. Dunne, daughter of Willa Reed and Harrison D. Willcutts, beloved mother of Kathleen Tyree and Tom Dunne of New Orleans, went home to be with Jesus Friday, January 11, 2002. She passed after a long-time illness of pulmonary fibrosis. She was a teacher, college professor, author, and reading consultant.
Born July 23, 1912, in St. Louis, Missouri, Mrs. Dunne spent most of her life in the north. She graduated from Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana with a degree in social work. She received her Masters of Arts in education from Northern Michigan Universi~ in 1967 and became a professor of education at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan.
She was the founder of Marquette area Young Authors, an accomplis h~ ment credited to her by a plaque in the Marquette Mall. Mrs. Dunne acted as a consultant to teachers helping them develop Cooperative Team Learning and Portfolio Assessment programs.
Her book, "The Art of Teaching Reading: a Language and Self Concept Approach" was published in 1969.
Also very active politically, Hope attended the 1984 Democratic National Convention as a delegate.
Mrs. Dunne was widowed to James T. Dunne in 1986, and to Harry Smith in 1998. She is survived by her daughter and son, Kathlee~ Tyree and Tom Dunne, 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at New Covenant Fellowship, 6056 Pontchartrain Blvd, Sunday, January 13, where Mrs. Dunne had attended with her daughter since 1998. An offering was taken and given in her name to feed the poor in Mexico.
Joseph W.Berry
MARQUETTE -- Joseph W. Berry passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, as a result of the accident at the Presque Isle Power Plant. He was born February 28, 1949 in Marquette, the son of Joseph H. and Elizabeth (Quilliam) Berry. Joe had been a life long resident of the area. Joe had a passion for the game of golf and was an avid outdoorsman. He served in the U.S. Navy during VietNam.
Surviving are his wife and best friend of 28 years, Susan M. (Conroy) Berry; his two sisters and brother, Joan Tigges of Milan, Ohio, David (Jan Sabin) Berry of Marquette and Colleen (Tom) McCarthy of Crete, Illinois; his mother-in-law, June Conroy of Berkley, Michigan; his sister-in-law Sharon (Pat) Marion of Royal Oak; and nieces and nephews, J.P. and Heather Marion, Angela (Adam) Byington, Kali and David Berry and Maggie and Kevin McCarthy. He was preceded in death by his parents.

June M. "Junebug" Dale
DEERTON -- June M. "Junebug"Dale, 74, of Deerton, entered eternal life Wednesday evening, January 16, 2002 at the Norlite Nursing Center, in the care and comfort of her family and Lake Superior Hospice. She had resided at Norlite since January 3 and had been in ill health for the past 18 months. June was born June 24, 1927 in Owosso, a daughter of the late James and Hattie (Johnson) Rogers. She was raised in the Trenary and Chatham areas and as a young teenager worked at the Louie Hartman Shingle Mill in Shingleton. She moved to the Sand River area where she met her future husband, Emery Rushford. He preceded her in death. She later married George Dale, Jr. and he preceded her in death in 1980. June was also employed for many years as a cook at the Tioga Tavern and the Lakeside Inn. June's family always came first, and her other interests and hobbies included cutting wood, enjoying her woodstove, taking long rides in the woods and enjoying nature, playing cribbage and shooting pool. She was also known as being a collector and saver of "everything."
Survivors include eleven daughters, Joyce Swanson and Christie (Charles) Aho, both of Palmer,Linda (Dennis) Glasser of Pittsburgh, PA, Paulette McCloud and Shelly McAllester, both of Alabama, Patty (Jim) Sims of California, Debbie Todd of Wisconsin, Penny Mathis of Florida and Teresa (Charles) Hough, Tina (Pete) Ritari and Kay (Gary) Sims of Marquette; five sons, Steve (Becky) Dale of Negaunee, John (Patty) Dale of Harvey, Roger (Debbie) Dale of Tennessee, Victor (Rose) Rushford of Pittsburgh, PA and Danny (Grace) Dale; her daughter-in-law, Sharon Dale of Harvey; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; her special friend and longtime companion, Richard Gee of Deerton; close friends Louise Smith, Flossie LeMieux and Jeanette Vaughan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and husbands, June was preceded in death by two sons, Donald G. "Tarz" Dale who died January 2 and Melvin Dale; two sisters; and three brothers.

Joyce Witz
SKANEE Joyce Witz, age 81, of Skanee, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital's skilled nurse unit.
She was born on September 10, 1920 in Houghton. She was raised in Baraga. Joyce married Vivan R. Witz on December 25, 1937. They moved to Detroit for a couple of years, moving back to Skanee in the 1940's. They started the Witz Marina in 1967. Joyce enjoyed her work. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Skanee.
Joyce is survived by four sons, James (Sandra) Witz of Skanee, Jerry (Sally) Witz of Rochester Hills, MI, Dean (Linda) Witz of Skanee and Tom (Holly) Witz of Skanee; a daughter, Darlene (Leslie) Elmblad of Skanee; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Minnie Kunick; her husband, Vivan; brothers, Morris and Ernest Kunick; and a sister Isabelle Seppanen.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 22 at 11:00am at the Zion Lutheran Church. The visitation will be on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Jacobson Funeral Home, and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Judy Mattson will officiate. Burial will be in the Skanee Cemetery in the spring. The Jacobson Funeral Home of L'Anse is in charge of arrangements.
Robert D. Kangas
SUOMI LOCATION -- Robert D. Kangas, 64, of 138 County Road MM, Suomi Location, died Friday morning, January 18, 2002 at his home with his family at his side and following a lengthy illness.
Bob was born May 8, 1937 in Ishpeming to Wilho and Vienna (Helander) Kangas, was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1955, and was a lifelong area resident. He served with the Medical Corp of the 107th Engineers of the Michigan National Guard. He married Marilyn Durant on May 25, 1957 in Republic. He worked as a mechanic for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 27 1/2 years, retiring in 1984 from the Empire Mine.
Mr. Kangas was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Suomi Location. He was a member of the Ishpeming Ski Club and was an active jumper in his youth. His hobbies included scuba diving and stock car racing. He was a member of the Hiawatha Ham Radio Club and he loved horses.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Marilyn; one daughter, Kathy (Jim) Kallioinen of Negaunee; four sons, Mark (Cheryl) Kangas of Lake Linden, Tim Joe Kangas of Suomi Location, Chuck Kangas of Negaunee and Todd (Lauri) Kangas of Ishpeming; four grandsons, Duane, Chris, Matt and Branden; four granddaughters, Elisa, Tashina, Nicole and Jessica; two great grandchildren, Dylan and R.J.; three sisters, Janet (Roy) Gabell of Palmer, Lois (Dean) Cross of Holt and Nancy (Dennis) Ponozzo of Stambaugh; two aunts; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant twin brother and sister, John and Elizabeth.

Darlene Anita Niemi
REPUBLIC Darlene Anita Niemi, age 80 of Rt. 1 Box 207 Republic, died Saturday afternoon January 19, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital.
Darlene was born September 13, 1921 in Tilden, Nebraska to the late George & Cora (Richards) Phillips. She was a graduate of the Brunswick High School. She moved to Republic in 1946. She was a member of the Republic United Methodist Church, Republic Golden Age Club, Historical Society, St. Vincent DePaul Society and was involved in the Ethnic Days. She liked to go bumming, shop for sales, going out to eat, camping, fishing and had a special knack for dog sitting. She loved to travel and enjoyed historical material.
She worked for the Republic IGA store, transported handicapped children. and drove school bus in the Republic Michigamme School District.
She is survived by 1 son Charles (Marda) Niemi of Republic, 3 daughters: Sandra (Dan) Leiterman of Green Bay, WI, Connie (Kurt) Trudell of Homestead, WI, Anita (Bob) Keto of Republic, 7 grandchildren: Dawn (Dennis) Klarkowski of DePere, WI, Denise Kerkela & Jaana Kerkela both of Flagstaff AZ, Dana Granlund of Green Bay, WI, Matthew (Sheryl) Niemi of KI Sawyer, MI, Craig Niemi & John Niemi both of Republic, 2 great grandchildren: Riley Klarkowski of DePere, WI & Megan Morris of K I. Gwenyth N. Swanson
DURHAM, NC Gwenyth N. Swanson, age 61 of Durham, N.C., passed away Jan. 10, 2002. She was born Feb. 27, 1940 to Arnold & Gwendolyn (Roberts) Swanson. He was a Durham resident for several years.
Gwenyth was raised in Negaunee by her grandparents, the late Thomas & Ethel Roberts after the deaths of her parents. She was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1958. She received her Bachelors Degree in Education from N.M.U. and a Masters Degree from Eastern Michigan University. She taught school in Oshkosh WI, at Negaunee St. Paul's School and she was the dean of a girl's school in Appleton, WI. She was employed as an assesment specialist in education for the State of Maryland for 6 years. She was in partnership in Pine Knoll Stables in North Carolina for several years with her friend Betty Lou Brunson.
Surviving are her sister, Susan Jill (David) Jenner, Avon, MN, 2 nephews; Lee Bocklund, Seattle, WA, Christopher Bocklund, St. Cloud MN, her aunts; Helen Brummel Iron Mountain, Dorothy Champion, Negaunee, Marion Brown, Eagle River, WI, Alyce (Royce) Lodholz, Maple Valley, WA, Marilyn Roberts, Lansing, Nova Roberts, Bemidji, MN, several cousins. Also surviving is her business partner & dear friend Betty Lou Brunson of Durham, NC.

ESCANABA Sr. Helen (Clare Frances) Looby, age 83, of the Congregation of the Sisters in Chartres, France died Sunday morning .January 20, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. A complete obituary will appear in Tuesday's edition. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. at the Skradski Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba. Parish prayers including a Rosary and singing will follow at 6:30 P.M. Visitation will continue on Thursday at St. Anne Catholic Church in Escanaba from 4:30 P.M. to 5:15 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial services will follow at 5:30 P.M. at St. Anne Catholic Church. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette. Carol Ann (Vierela) Hopkins
STERLING HEIGHTS -- Carol Ann (Vierela) Hopkins, 66, of Sterling Heights, passed away January 19, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. Carol was born on January 29, 1935 in Republic, Michigan to Lawrence and Sylvia Vierela. She served in the United States Army in Maryland, from 1952 to 1954. She married Duane A. Hopkins in December of 1954 and settled to raise a family in the suburban Detroit area.
Carol earned degrees with honors from Macomb (County) Community College (AA), Oakland University (BA) and Oakland University (MS). She worked for and retired from the State of Michigan serving first with the Drivers Licensing Bureau as a Clerk and later with the Department of Social Services as a Foster Care and Adoption specialist.
A loving spouse, parent and proud grandparent she is survived by her husband, Duane, son Brian and daughter in law Rita, granson Shawn and son James, daughter in law Lori and grandson Ryan. Preceded in death by granddaughter Kelly Rae Hopkins. She also had a profound love for children. She nurtured her love of children through her professional pursuits, even into retirement. As one of her final requests, she asked that in lieu of flowers, donations in her name be made to Catholic Social Services of Oakland County, in support of the children's Foster Care and Adoption program, 1424 East Eleven Mile Road, Royal Oak MI 48067.
Visitation will be held Tuesday 1-9p.m. at Verheyden- Duross Funeral Home, 28499 Schoenherr, Warren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday 11:00 AM at the funeral home.

Laina H. Johnson
L'ANSE -- Laina H. Johnson, 86 of L'Anse passed away Monday, January 21, 2002 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital skilled nursing unit following a lengthy illness. Laina was born February 7, 1914 in South Range, MI, daughter of the late Kusti and Hilma (Loukajarvi) Pekkala. She attended Painsdale High School and graduated in 1933. In 1936 she married John Johnson in Kyro, MI. He preceded her in death in July of 1986. She was a lifetime area resident. Laina was a member of the United Lutheran Church, L'Anse. She was also a member of the Baragaland Senior Citizens, L'Anse. Among her many interests wer bowling, gardening, knitting and crocheting. Her greatest joy was her family.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her sons, John Johnson, and Duane (Pam) Johnson of L'Anse, 5 grandchildren, Jamie, Jeri, Lisa, Heather, Scott, 5 great-grandchildren, Samantha, Whitney, Maegan, Hunter, Joshua; 1 sister, Lempi Gustafson of L'Anse. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded by brothers, Gustav, Leo and sisters, Lila, and Lou.
Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2002 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Pastor Margaret Grant officiating. Spring intermenty will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery, L'Anse. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. until time of service. Following the service, the family invites friends to join them for fellowship and refreshments in the Harrington Gathering Room located at the funeral home. Sr. Helen (Clare Frances) Looby
ESCANABA, MI -- Sr. Helen (Clare Frances) Looby was born in Kilbracken, Ireland, in County Leitrim the seventh child of William and Ellen (Gaffney) Looby on January 9, 1919. She died at St. Francis Hospital, Escanaba, Michigan on Sunday morning January 20, 2002.
Sr. Helen entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul in Chartres, France on March 19, 1936, beginning her novitiate on November 21, 1937. She professed her first vows on February 2, 1939 in Chartres and made her final vows in Vigan, Philippines on February 2, 1944..
While Sr. Helen was in the Philippines from 1939 to 1950, she earned her ACS and BSE degrees, and served as a teacher in Aparri, Vigan, Quezon City and Malate. She went to France in 1950, serving at St. Cheron in Chartres until 1954 and at Notre Dame in Dreux from 1954 to 1963. She was assigned to Rome, Italy from 1963 to 1968 as teacher of the postulants and novices in the International Novitiate of the Sisters of St. Paul.
Sr. Helen came to the United States in 1969 where she first taught the postulants and novices in Marquette, Michigan until 1971. From 1971 to 1972 she was a teacher at St. William's School in Menominee, Michigan. St. William's became Menominee Catholic Central North in 1972, and Sr. Helen served as religious educator there during 1972 to 1973. From 1973 to 1982, she was Director of Religious Education at St. Christopher Parish, Marquette. In 1992, she was assigned to Bishop Noa Home, Escanaba, where she served as a Pastoral Caregiver until her ill health in the fall of 2001.
Sr. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers; John and Willie, and three of her sisters; Helen, Beatrice and Elizabeth.
Survivors include 1 sister, Anne (Jim) Guiney of Windsor, Ontario, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her religious family: Sr. Anne-Patrice, Sr. Lucienne, Sr. Anne-Charles, Sr. Marie Kim Phuong, and Sr. Diane all of Escanaba; Sr. Felicienne, Sr. Frances Mary, Sr. Mary Ann, Sr. Rosalie and Sr. Marie Thu Hoi all of Marquette; and Sr. Marie Claire, Sr. Gloria, Sr. Estela, Sr. Lillian, Sr. Sally and Sr. Cathy all of Washington D.C., as wellas nearly 4,000 Sisters of St. Paul throughout the world.
Sister Helen is fondly remembered for her dedication to Christ and those she served so well. We also remember fondly her sense of humor, her wisdom and her love. As she returns to the Lord Jesus who has prepared a place for her in his mansion, we miss her. Yet, we are happy that her suffering is over, and we look forward to joining her in heaven one day.
Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba. Parish prayer services including the Rosary and singing will follow at 6:30 P.M. which will be led by Rev. Gilbert Neurohr and the Sisters of St. Paul. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 4:30 P.M. to 5:15 P.M. at St. Anne Catholic Church in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial Services will follow at 5:30 P.M. Thursday at St. Anne Church with The Most Rev. James H. Garland, Rev. Michael Steber, and Rev. Gilbert Neurohr officiating. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette. In lieu of flowers, Sr. Helen's Religious Community and family express their desire that donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Paul for the needs of their overseas missions. Envelopes will be available at the Skradski-Boyce Funera Home in Escanaba, Fassbender Funeral Home in Marquette and St. Anne Church in Escanaba. The Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home of Escanaba and Gladstone is in care of the arrangements.
