She was born at home in Munising October 18, 1908 and graduated from Munising High School in 1925. Her first secretarial position was as a summer fill-in at the Michigan State Experimental Farm in Chatham. She was encouraged to take the federal qualification tests and was hired by the National Labor Relations Board where she worked for over 25 years, retiring finally as an executive secretary. By this time she and her husband were living in Birmingham Ml, where she stayed for several years after he died. She frequently vacationed in Munising and Marquette all her married life and after twice trying the group living conditions in an assisted living facility in East Lansing, she moved to Marquette for good in 1998. She was living at Tourville West when illness forced her to enter the Mather Nursing Home in December, 2000. In July of 2001 she decided not to pursue extraordinary measures to prolong her life and Kathleen and Tony took her to their home on West Hewitt Avenue in Marquette, just around the corner from 611 N. Third (which is now a hair salon and bridal shop). Lake Superior Hospice assisted in her care, especially Pat, Linda and Jamie.

To the end Helen retained her wit and sense of humor, charming everyone who met her. She was a great reader and spent profitable hours at Snowbound Bookstore in earlier years.
