Ada S. Boyle
MARQUETTE -- Ada S. Boyle, 93, of 116 N. 5th St., Marquette, entered eternal life at noon

Saturday, February 2, 2002, at the Norlite Nursing Center where she had resided since April 2001.

Born November 14, 1908 in Bergland, a daughter of the late Thorvald and Birgiet (Hauvslund) Eastley, she was raised in Bergland, graduating from the L'Anse High School in 1926. She enrolled at Northern Normal Teacher's College (now Northern Michigan University) where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in Vulcan for 2 years. On July 18, 1932 she married Charles J. Boyle in St. Peter Cathedral. It was the Depression Era and, due to the death of her parents, Ada and Charles assumed the responsibility of raising Ada's five brothers and sisters, as well as starting their own family.

Ada was very devoted to her family, enjoying her role as homemaker. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed playing cards, especially poker. She loved spending time at hunting camp and going hunting. Even into her 80's, following a recent stroke and hospitalization, undaunted, she ventured into the woods during deer hunting season, blaming a near missed shot on the stroke.

She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.

A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, she is survived by: four daughters, Nancy (Rudy) Mosca of Sault Ste Marie, Ada (Les) Ruohomaki of Gladstone, Mary DeMerse and Kathy (Danny) Pompo both of Marquette; three sons, Herb (Judy) Boyle of Marquette, Tom (Kate) Boyle of Mesa, AZ, and Doug Boyle of Marquette; a daughter-in-law, Carol Boyle of Indian Harbor Beach, FL; 24 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 6 great- great grandchildren; a sister, Florence Pelissier who resides at Norlite Nursing Center; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Eastley of Marquette; Esther Eastley of Sacramento, CA; Marion Boyle of Atwater, CA; and Marie Seipp of Los Angles, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ada was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Boyle in 1985; by an infant son, James Boyle; son, John "Jack" Boyle; a sister, Sigrid Johnson; and brothers, John, Herb, Einer, and Raymond Eastley.

Friends may call at the Fassbender Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 5, from 3:00 to 6:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7:00 pm Tuesday evening in St. Michael Catholic Church with Rev. Shaun Erno, as celebrant. A reception for family and friends will follow in St. Michael's Parish Center. Ada's grandchildren will serve as her escorts. Burial will be made in the Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Norlite Nursing Center Patient Activity Fund.

Jean Farrell

MARQUETTE -- Jeanette "Jean" Farrell, 87, of 130 E. Kaye Avenue, Marquette, and long time organist and choir director at St. Michael Catholic Church, died Sunday morning at the Norlite Nursing Center where she had resided the past several years. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home.

Taisto Orhanen

MARQUETTE -- Taisto Edwin Orhanen age 81, of 1735 Wilkinson Ave. died Sunday morning February 3, 2002 in his home. He was born on June 8, 1920 in Marquette to Toivo and Sandra (Hill) Orhanen. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.

Taisto graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science and then received a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan. Prior to his retirement he taught Industrial Arts and Drafting in Manistique for 35 years.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Elks Lodge, American Legion, Lakeside Masonic Lodge in Manistique, and the MEA. Taisto enjoyed camping, trout fishing, hunting, and was very fond of his cat "Beddie 2".

He is survived by his daughter Susan (Robert) Hewitt of Marquette, 3 sons Peter (Barbara) of Marquette, Michael of Marquette, and Jon (Rebecca) of Gladstone. His grandchildren Tim Mattson, Lisa Mattson Gannon, Jack Orhanen, Jonathan Hewitt, James Hewitt, Kate Orhanen and Jessica Orhanen, and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Miriam in 1999 and two sisters Fannie and Ruth Benson.

Friends may call at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home from 5 PM until 8 PM on Tuesday. Masonic Services will be conducted at 7 PM and an American Legion Memorial Service at 7:30 PM. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday February 6, 2002 in the Messiah Lutheran Church with Reverends Nancy Amacher and Timothy Bernard officiating.

Friends may call at the church 1 hour prior to services. Burial will take place in Park Cemetery.

Carol S. Bjorne Nagel
DES MOINES, IOWA -- Mrs. Carol S. Bjorne Nagel, age 62, of 212 Hughes Ave. S.W., Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2002 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from complications from a stroke.

Carol was born in Ishpeming, MI and has resided in Des Moines for the past 6 years. She has lived in numerous places throughout her life, including Gwinn, Michigan.

Carol was a Wife, Mother and Grandmother. She was a member of Southgate Eastern Star where she was Past Worthy Matron and Nefretete Temple of the Daughters of the Nile where she was Past Queen in Marquette, MI. She was also a member of VFW Auxiliary and Fort Des Moines Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed reading, knitting, quilting, crafts, sewing and crocheting.

Carol is survived by her husband, Jim Nagel of Des Moines; 3 Sons James (Robbie) Nagel of Bridgeport, MI, Roger Nagel of Des Moines & William Nagel of Raleigh, North Carolina; 2 Brothers Jacob Bjorne of Huntsville, Alabama & Roger Bjorne of Ishpeming; 3 Granddaughters Rebecca, Elizabeth and Sarah Nagel; and 1 Grandson Austin Nagel.

Services will be Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Fort Des Moines Presbyterian Church. Cremation took place at Hamilton's Crematory in Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2025 E. River Pkwy., Minneapolis, MN 55414.

Eleanore K. Schmelzle

MANITOWOC -- Eleanore K. Schmelzle, age 88, of 3003 S. 19th Street, Manitowoc, died at Harmony East, Saturday, February 2, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer,

Funeral Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. James Massart with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.

She was born February 24, 1913, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Frank and Mary Dirkman Lallensack. On September 16, 1939, she married Marvin F. Schmelzle at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Manitowoc. He preceded her in death February 25, 1996. Eleanore was a weekly volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul in Manitowoc until December of 2001. She loved to knit mittens, scarfs and hats that were given to Salvation Army of Manitowoc, Outreach of Marquette, Michigan, St. Vincent de Paul of Republic, Michigan and Downsville Elementary School, Downsville, Wl. She was a charter member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, a member of the Daughters of Isabella and a former member of the St. Therese Soeiety.

Survivors include her children, Sister Margey Schmelzle, Republic, Michigan, Marie Clare Schmelzle, Milwaukee, Ann Arbuckle, New Holstein and Tom & Barbara Schmelzle, Menomonie, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Chad & Nate Arbuckle, Mark Schmelzle, Scott Schmelzle and his fiance Toni Stempel; a sister, Beatrice Lallensack, Manitowoc and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward & Rose Lallensack, Port Washington, Victor & Angie Lallensack, rural Manitowoc, George & Lucille Lallensack, rural Newton.

She is further survived by two brothers-in-law, Arden Koehler, Kewaunee, Herbert Schiesl, Manitowoc and three sisters-in-law, Lorraine Lallensack, Glady Lallensack and Evelyn Schmelzle, all of Manitowoc. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, William and Francis Lallensack, two sisters, Clara Koehler, Delphine Schiesl and two brothers-in-law, Carroll Schmelzle and Greg Schmelzle.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Manitowoc, from 3 p.m. Wednesday until the time of service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Holy Family Memorial Cancer Care Center, Manitowoc.

The Peffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangernents.

Eleanore was a loving grandmother, mother and wife; she was a dedicated volunteer and a knittng wonder. Music, birds, nature, her flowers and gardening were her life-giving hobbies. Eleanore was a spirited gifted woman - she will be greatly missed and always in our hearts!

Evelyn Genevieve (Bongartz) Weiger

WAYNE, IL -- A memorial service celebrating the life of Evelyn Genevieve (Bongartz) Weiger will be held 6:30 PM., Thursday, February 5th at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 10l South 6th Avenue, St. Charles, Illinois.

Born October 4.1921 in Marquette, Michigan, she died Sunday afternoon, February 3, 2002, in her daughter and son-in-law's home. During the last weeks of her life, she was cared for lovingly by her niece, Janet Withrow, and granddaughter, Melissa Meana.

For 25 years, Evelyn was a Medical Assistant for a family practice physician in Marquette.

She was the beloved mother of Sandra (Fernando) Meana of Wayne, Illinois, cherished grandmother of Timothy Meana and Melissa Meana devoted sister of Sophia (James) Bucholtz, and Yvonne (Ronald) Berkel and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene, her parents Henry and Susan and a sister Betty.

Herbert C. Murray

BOYNTON BEACH, FL - Herbert C. Murray, age 76, formerly of Michigamme, MI passed away February 1, 2002 at his home at 606 S.W. 15th St. Boynton Beach, FL following a brief illness.

Herb was born on August 29, 1925 in Ishpeming, MI, the son of Clarence & Dolores (Diedrich) Murray. He was a graduate of Michigamme High School and Coyne Electrical School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. After his tour of duty he attended Ferris State University. On October 21, 1950 he married Mary Welcher of Wayne, MI. The resided in Michigamme for 29 years as owners of Herb & Mary's Bar & Restaurant. During the time he served several terms as Commander of the American Legion Anderson Paquette Post #339. He was also a member of the Michigamme Fire Department.

In 1979, Herb & Mary moved to Florida where he was employed by Beach Point Condominiums in Palm Beach for 22 years before retiring in January. While in Florida he was a member of American Legion Post #47 & #164 and the VFW Post #5335. He was a member of San Isidro Catholic Church in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Herb is survived by his wife Mary Murray of Boynton Beach, two sons; Gordon (Sherry) Murray & Guy (Diane) Murray of both of Diorite, MI, two daughters; Virginia (Paul) Olson of Michigamme, and Victoria (Charles) Ricketts of Ishpeming, a son in law Thomas Mroz of Mount Morris, PA, 18 grandchildren & 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Katherine Mroz, granddaughter Rachael Ricketts and great granddaughter Kathryn Ann Smith. Herb will be remembered by many as a kind and generous man always willing to give of himself.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 Friday, February 8, 2002 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion with the Rev. Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme.

Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home where a parish wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. also friends may call at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Pallbearers will be Harold "Bud" Welcher, John Ilves, Alex Guizzetti, Wilson Boback, Art Benson, & Kenneth "Swede" Bennon.

Inge Madsen

NEWBERRY -- Inge Madsen, 80, of Newberry, died Saturday morning February 2, 2002 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at 11:00 am at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor David M. Hueter officiating. Interment will take place at Forest Home Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 5th fro 4-7pm.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry is assisting the family.

Jack Wixtrom

REPUBLIC - Jack Wixtrom, age 62, of Rt. 1 Box 50 B Republic, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2002 at the Marquette General Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

Jack was born April 1, 1939 in Witch Lake to the late Seth and Mae (Doan) Wixtrom. He was a life long area resident, except for the time he spent serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era.

Jack worked 30 years for the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company working at the Republic Mine and retired as a plant repairman from the Tilden Mine in 1995. He was a member of the Republic Lions Club and former member of the Republic Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed making wood signs and other wood products along with hunting, fishing and being at camp.

Jack is survived by his wife, whom he married August 10, 2000, Hannah (Koski) Wixtrom; four daughters, Leah Burke of Hiawatha, IA, Lori (William) Trudell of Champion, Terri (Jeff) DuMoulin of Republic and Tammy (Mark) Johnson of Negaunee; a son, J. Christopher Wixtrom of Wich Lake; two step-daughters, Candice (Joe) Schoenherr of Hope, MI and Tammy (Keith) Millimaki of Ishpeming; three step-sons, Ronnie Paul Koski of Marquette, Curtis (Chrissy) Koski of Green Bay and Todd (Carole) Koski of Green Bay; four sisters, Marcy (Howard) Houlmont of Marquette, June Laakso of Witch Lake, Donna (Arvid) Erickson of Republic and Nancy (Fred) Spanton of Republic; three brothers, James (Helen) Wixtrom, Bruce (Arlene) Wixtrom and William (Luana) Wixtrom all of Witch Lake; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jennifer (Darryll) Daniels of Republic, Georgiana Tarvainen of Ishpeming, Rita (Rick) Kerkela of Republic, Nancy (Keith) Perry of Republic, Sandy (Joe) Couveau of Republic, Karen (Jim) Perry of Republic and Karen (Harold) Richards of Ishpeming; 22 grandchildren; special friend, Aaron Wixtrom of Witch Lake; special niece, Heather Daniels of Republic; along with numerous other nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Elizabeth "Liz" Wixtrom.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with Fr. Gilles Brault and Donald Wixtrom to officiate.

Jeanette "Jean" Farrell

MARQUETTE -- Jeanette "Jean" (Moreau) Farrell, 87, of 130 East Kaye Avenue died Sunday February 3, 2002 at the Norlite Nursing Center where she had resided since February 1998.

Born December 14, 1914 in Escanaba to the late Albert and Ada (Roberge) Moreau she was raised in Escanaba, graduating from St. Joseph High School.

On May 24, 1937 she married Joseph T. Farrell in Escanaba and the couple moved to Marquette where they worked and raised their family.

She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society in Marquette where she was organist and choir director for 43 years (1947-1990). Prior to that time she was organist and choir director at the former St. John's Catholic Church

in Marquette.

In her spare time, Jean also gave piano lessons and enjoyed all aspects of music and especially loved sharing her musical gift with family and friends.

She was a very good cook and enjoyed preparing her favorite recipes for her family and friends.

A loving mother and grandmother she is survived by two sons: James (Sharon) Farrell, Orlando, FL,; Jerry (Kathy) Farrell, Marquette; five grandchildren: Scott (Cindy) Farrell, Cumming, GA,; Michelle (John) Ames, Orlando, FL; Laurie, Michael and AnnMarie Farrell, Marquette; five great grandchildren: Kaitlin, Steven and Jessica Farrell, Cumming, GA; Alexander and Nicole Ames, Orlando, FL; one sister, Doris Dye, Escanaba and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by Joseph, her husband of 60 years, in September, 1997; her daughter-in-law Louise, 1996; four brothers: Ernest, Leonard, Victor and Robert Moreau; three sisters: Cecile Zarse, Helen Douglas and Lillian Barggren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Thursday in St. Michael Catholic Church in Marquette with the Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick and the Rev. Shaun Erno concelebrants.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the time of the mass at the church. Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Mausoleum. Escorts will be members of her family.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider the St. Michael Church Memorial Fund, 401 W. Kaye Ave., Marquette, MI 49855.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of the Norlite Nursing Center for their loving care of Jean while she was a resident with them.

The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Kathryn M. Chroge

BRAMPTON, MI -- Kathryn M. Chroge, age 86, of 10472 Hwy. M-35, Brampton, MI died Sunday morning February 3, 2002 at home following a lengthy illness.

Kathryn was born May 7, 1915 in Escanaba the daughter of Benard and Louella (Manning) Boyle. She was raised in Escanaba and moved to Gladstone following her marriage to Wallace W. Chroge in 1936. They resided in Gladstone until 1956 when they moved to Brampton.

Kathryn had worked for Pine Haven Rest Home for 17 years and for Christian Park Health Care Center for 10 years. She was a member of All Saints Church and was a Foster Grandmother for Community Action Agency. Her hobbies included playing Bingo.

Survivors include: 3 Sons: Donald (Frankie) Chroge of Texas, Vern (Vivian) Chroge of Brampton and Glenn Chroge of Brampton; 7 Daughters: Barbara (Delbert) Gravelle of Rockford, IL, Millie Hunt of Brampton, Pat Griffey of Rockford, IL, Bea (Thomas) Russell of Perkins, MI, Sandy (L.J.) Clark of Rockford, IL, Susan (Michael) Davis of Brampton, MI, Polly (Keith) Freeborn of Brampton, MI; Numerous Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Wallace W. in 1992, a son Kenneth Chroge in 1989, 3 Grandsons Gary Chroge, Tony Englund and Shawn Chroge and numerous brothers and sisters.

Kathryn's family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 5, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Mass of Christian Burial Services will follow at 6:00 p.m. at All Saints Church in Gladstone with Rev. Arnold Grambow officiating. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells, MI. The Skradski Funeral Home of Delta County is in charge of arrangements.
