Mrs. Josephine Ann Greenlund
GWINN -- Mrs. Josephine Ann Greenlund, age 84 of 344 Kaydet, Gwinn, MI, formerly of Iron River, MI passed away February 3, 2002 at the Marquette General Hospital, Marquette, MI after a brief illness.
Born April 3, 1917 in Caspian, MI she was the daughter of the late Conrad and Virginia (Margoni) Ambach. She graduated in 1934 from Stambaugh High School. After graduation she worked in Chicago for 11 years as a bookkeeper for manufacturing firms & for several years for Solo Laboratories. She then returned to the UP where she was a secretary for the UAW union office in Kingsford. In 1953 she went to Iron River to work as a bookkeeper from the Lindahl Car Dearlership.
In June 1955 she married Robert E. Greenlund, former schoolteacher and coach for Iron River and West Iron County School systems, and resided in Iron River as a housewife and mother.
In Sept. 1988 she moved with her daughter to the Gwinn area. She loved taking care of her family and home. She enjoyed sewing, loved to dance, enjoyed a good laugh and spending time with her daughter. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, Nov. 3, 1979, 2 brothers, Anthony & Charles Ambach, 3 sisters; Mary Ambach, Rose Ghiggia & Edith Judd.
Survived by her daughter, Mary Jo Greenlund, Gwinn, MI., son, Robert C. (Cindy) Greenlund, Houghton, MI, brother, Edward (Luella) Ambach, Iron River, MI, sister Julia Badini, Iron Mtn., MI., 2 grandchildren, Amber & Crystal Greenlund, Houghton, MI., several nieces & nephews.
Visitation will be Wed., February 6, 2002 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:45 A.M.
at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River, MI.

Ronald Keith Alexander
IRON MOUNTAIN -- Ronald Keith Alexander, 63, of 509 East D Street, died Thurs. Jan. 31, 2002 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. He was born on Jan. 5, 1939 in Marquette, MI the son of the late Robert and Evelyn (Tramontine) Alexander.
Mr. Alexander worked for Grede Foundrie for 30 years, retiring in 1999. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a fan of country music and the Green Bay Packers. He also enjoyed going to the casino.
He married Joan Galeazzi on August 6, 1960 in Iron Mountain.
He is survived by his wife Joan, 4 daughters Roxanne (Scott) Murphy of Theresa, NY, Renee (Keith) Paquette of Iron Mountain, Rose (Brian) Grailer of Kingsford, Rochelle Alexander (Fiance Craig Spigarelli) of Iron Mountain, two sons Roger of Tempe, AZ, and Robert (Angela) of Healdsburg, CA, 10 grandchildren Jesse and Michael Alexander, Amanda and Nicholas Paquette, Adam and Emily Grailer, Matthew and Katelyn Vincent, and Michelle and Allyson Murphy, 3 sisters Sally (Jack) Fleury of Marquette, Carol (Albert) Galeazzi and Babe Gardipey both of Iron Mountain and 1 brother Wallace Alexander of Marquette.
He was precededin death by 2 sons Richard and Ronald "Bucko" and a brother Robert.
Funeral services were held Sat. at the Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home. Burial was in Cemetery Park.

William F. "Bill" Makinen
REPUBLIC - William F. "Bill" Makinen, age 84, formerly of Rt. 1 Box 203 C., Republic, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming where he had been a resident for the past year.
Bill was born July 26, 1917 in Negaunee to the late Frank and Mary (Krummi) Makinen. Bill graduated from the Negaunee High School in 1935. In 1938, Bill married Sylvia Uusitalo. They lived in Republic while raising their twin daughters. He served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1959, Bill and Sylvia moved to California. Here, Bill worked as a Union Carpenter and Musician until his retirement in 1982. Upon retirement, Bill and Sylvia moved to Paradise, CA where they lived until 1999.
Bill was an accomplished accordian player, entertaining at countless festivities in the Upper Peninsula and California. Bill enjoyed eating a good pasty, history, photography, traveling, camping and fishing. Bill was a member of the Republic V.F.W.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law- Sally and Jim Hall of Republic; Brothers- Edwin (Dolores) Makinen and Oiva (Gladys) Makinen both of Negaunee; Sisters- Rhea (Art) Heins of Grand Rapids, MI and Immi Laxo of Republic; Sisters-in-law- Taimi Uusitalo and Irja Peterson; Son-in-law- Kenneth Johnson; Grandchildren- Gregory Johnson, Holly Blubaugh, Keith Johnson, Mark Laurila, Brenda Mattson, Bradley Laurila, Julie Prychitko, Kimberley Rose, Wayne Johnson, Bryan Laurila, Ryan Johnson, Shannon Wixtrom, and Stacie Johnson; many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Sylvia in 1999 and a daughter, Sonja Johnson in 1995.
A service of remembrance will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, February 8, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in the Republic Cemetery.
The family will greet friends at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 2:00 until 3:00 PM on Friday.
A luncheon will follow the service at the Ishpeming Country Kitchen.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at the Mather Nursing Center and U.P. Home Health and Private Duty for the compassionate care towards Bill.
Wilma D. Sparks
lSHPEMING - Wilma D. Sparks, age 90 formerly of 337 New York St., Ishpeming, died Monday February 4, 2002 at the Marquette Co. Medical Care Facility where she had been a resident for the past 3 1/2 years.
Wilma was born Februar, 24, 1911 in Ishpeming to the late Isaac and Alma Luomanen. She worked as a seamstress at the H. W. Gossard Co. in Ishpeming for over 40 years, retiring in the mid-1970s. Wilma had been an active member of the H.W. Gossard Union, having served as former president of the local union. Wilma was also an active member of the Marquette Co. Democratic Party.
Survivors include five grandchildren - Shelley (Shaun) Johnson of Robbinsdale, MN, Ronalyn (Barry) Arseneau of Champion, Ray Hamari of Ishpeming, Mark Hamari of Ishpeming and Jason (Melissa) Hamari of lshpeming; 4 great grandchildren - Amber, Alyssa and Bryan Arseneau and Luke Johnson, a special niece Gail Korpi along with several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Bryan Sparks in 1973, a daughter Barbara Hamari in 1989 and a son Gary Sparks in 1983, along with 4 sisters and a brother.
Private funeral services will be held on Thursday Feb. 7, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to ofTiciate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Andrew Tyler Maxon
MUNISING -- Andrew TyIer Maxon, eight week old son of Roy and Kathy Maxon of 801 Prospect Street, Munising, died Tuesday morning, February 5. 2002 at Mott's ChiIdren's Hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Andrew was born with
a congenital heart condition and was in Ann Arbor for surgery. He was loved very much by his big brother and Andrew loved to be sung to. He is survived by his parents, Roy and Kathy Maxon of Munising, his big brother, Trevor Charles Maxon; grandparents Linda Bower of Munising and Roy and Margie Maxon of Munising; great-grandparents Walt Bower and Catherine and Ed Johnson, all of Munising; aunts and uncles Robin VandeZande, Albert and David Beauchamp, Kathy Baij, Babs Maxon, and Marc Maxon: eleven cousins: and numerous great aunts and uncles.
Friends may call at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5 :00 until 8:00. Pastor Calvin Fahrion will conduct the funeral service on Friday, February 8, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Munising. Interment
will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.

Clarence P. Kemp
ISHPEMING -- Clarence P. Kemp, age 92, of 624 Maurice St., Ishpeming, died Tuesday at 11:15am, February 5, 2002 at Bell Memorial Hospital.
Clarence was born August 12, 1909 in Ishpeming to Provis and Harriet (Richards) Kemp. He was a 1927 graduate of Negaunee High School and was a lifelong area resident. He owned and operated Kemp's grocery store for many years. Clarence, in his spare time, loved to spend time with his family especially his grandchildren.
Surviving are one daughter, Colleen (Anthony) Bertucci of Ishpeming; one son, Paul (Barbara) Kemp of Eager, AZ; one sister, Harriet Guizetti of St. Charles, IL; ten grandchildren, Vickie (Michael) Suardini of Ishpeming, Paul (Cindy) Bertucci of Ishpeming, Keith (Jossette) Wilder of Ishpeming, Marcia (Jeff) Gapanowicz of Racine, WI, Jay (Ann) Wilder of Ishpeming, Laurie Kemp of Racine, WI, Dale Wilder of Ishpeming, Terri Kruger of Racine, WI, Karen (Greg) Baldukas of Kenosha, WI, Tracy (Brad) Quayle of Ishpeming; 20 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Charlotte; one daughter, Carol in 1997; and three brothers.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas R. Lee, Pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the Koskey Funeral Home from 12:00 noon until the time of services at 1:00pm on Saturday.
Donald T. Young
INDIANOLA, IOWA -- Donald T. Young, age 82 of Indianola, Iowa passed away Monday, February 4, 2002 at the Westview Care Center, Indianola, Iowa.
Survivors include 1 one son, Richard Thomas Young and wife Sharron of Marquette, Michigan, 1 daughter, Connie Kratzer of Las
Cruces, New Mexico, 3 grandchildren, Don Kratzer of Toyoko, Japan, Deborah (Kratzer) Louden of Richland, Michigan, and Michael Young of Dillon, Colorado, 2 great-grandchildren, Misty Young and Shane Young both of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, 2 sisters, Verla Holloway of Ventura, California and Carol Wagner of Pleasanton, California.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Young on July 27, 1995.

Gerda La Mere
ISHPEMING -- Gerda La Mere, 97, passed away Tuesday morning, February 5, 2002 at the Mather Nursing Home where she had resided since October, l998. She died peacefully in her sleep with a compassionate U. P. Home Hospice caregiver at her bedside.
Gerda was born in Sweden in 1904 to Oscar & Justina (Nord) Kurin and moved to Ishpeming when she was two years of age. She married Fred La Mere of Palmer in 1923 and was happily married until his sudden death in 1955.
Gerda worked at the Gossard factory for many years until she retired in the mid-seventies. She was a member of the Vasa Lodge in Ishpeming and, in her younger years, belonged to a cribbage league. Gerda enjoyed playing cards and board games and liked taking photographs of scenery, flowers and people she knew and loved. Gerda loved to knit and crochet and made many beautiful tablecloths in a rainbow of colors. She was always happy when she was cooking and entertaining guests in her house. Gerda was a generous and kind woman who will be remembered fondly to all who knew her.
In addtion to her parents and her husband, Fred, she was preceded in death by her sister and five brothers and their spoused, all of whom had lived in Ishpeming and Negaunee areas. There were Jennie (Kurin) & Otto Huhtala, William & Emmaline (Matthews) Kurin, Folke Kurin, Oscar & Elmi (Koski) Kurin, Carl & Eini (Koski) Kurin and Alvar and Florence (Dompierre) Kurin.
Gerda was also preceded in death by two nephews, a niece and nephew-in-law. They were Ralph Huhtala of Iron Mountain, William Huhtala of Grayling, Michigan whose surviving wife is Dorothy, Helen (Huhtala) Becker of South Bend, Indiana, whose surviving husband is Clifford. Also, Oscar Anderson of Negaunee, whose surviving wife is Shelby (Kurin).
Surviving nieces and nephews are: William and Janet (Korpi) Kurin of Novi, Michigan, Cynthia (Kurin) Long of Scottsdale, Arizona, Carl Duane and Ann (Johnson) Kurin of Federal Way, Washington and Randolph and Gail (Pizziali) Kurin of Ishpeming, Kris (Kurin) and William Laaninen and Paul and Sharon (Kurin) St. Onge of Negaunee, Shelby (Kurin) Anderson of Negaunee, Alvar and Nancy (Maki) Kurin of Eben and Joan (Kurin) and James Alongo of Ishpeming.
There are also several great and great-great nephews and niece, three of whom were especially close to their "Aunt Gerda." They are: Steve Jarvi of Ishpeming, Scott Jarvi of Ishpeming and Lisa (Anderson) Miller of Negaunee.
The family would like to thank the wonderful and considerate staff at the Mather Nursing Center for their loving attention to Gerda while she resided there and the U.P. Home Hospice people who were so kind and giving to Gerda as her life was ending here on earth. She also asked that thanks be sent to her Bessemer Street neighbors for their care and concern, help and vigilence while she lived there.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Friday February 8, 2002 at the Racine Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lauri Maki, Pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be from 10 AM until time of the service. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Linda D. Hardy
GWINN -- Linda D. Hardy, 57, of 99 Northernaire Drive, Gwinn, entered eternal life Sunday evening, February 3, 2002, at Marquette General Hospital, where she had been admitted earlier in the evening. She had been in ill health for many years. Linda was born December 8, 1944 in Milwaukee, WI, a daughter of the late Leo Merle and Mavis Joan (Larson) Snyder. She was raised in Milwaukee, moving to the Upper Peninsula in 1981. Since then, she had resided in the Marquette, Skandia, and the Gwinn areas. A homemaker, she enjoyed needlework, especially crocheting. Linda's other interests included collecting, anything and everything, and enjoying and caring for her feline companions, Misty, Samantha, and Boots. Linda is survived by: three daughters, Kristy A. Hardy, and her fiance, Jason Denny, of Gwinn, Tina Hardy, serving with the Peace Corps in South America, and Cindy (Bob) Ciepluch of Hatley, WI; two sons, Rod (Bonnie) Bengry and Jim Dahl, both of Milwaukee, WI; her grandchildren, Dianne, Timothy, Melinda, Lynn, Janet, Sue, Sabrina, Eleanor, and Adam; several great-grandchildren; her former husband, Warren Hardy of Goodman, WI; a sister, Sherry Kinney of Butler, WI; four brothers, Randy (Dixie) Snyder and Roger Snyder both of Milwaukee, WI, Terry (Connie) Snyder of Hatley, WI, and Mike Snyder of St. Louis, MO; and several nieces and nephews. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday afternoon, February 8, at 2:00 pm at the Fassbender Funeral Home with Chaplain Leon Jarvis of Marquette General Hospital officiating.
Reverend Warren B. Jolls
LIMESTONE -- Reverend Warren B. Jolls, 86, of E3464 H-44 Traunik, Michigan, entered into eternity to meet his Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 5, 2002. Since last September he had resided at Superior Health Haven following several strokes and a heart attack. Rev. Jolls is survived by his wife Laura Isabelle Bruett Jolls; his son Earl (Lucille) Jolls and grandson Jonathon of Comstock Park, MI; daughter Dorothea (Gale) Hodges and grandson David of San Jose, CA; son Theodore (Lynda) Jolls of Limestone, MI: daughter Dolores Jones of Traverse City, MI; sister Rae Cetas of Tuscon, AZ; brother Aru (Joyce) Jolls of Grand Ledge, MI Willmington, NC, and many nieces and nephews.
Rev. Jolls was born on June 26, 1915 in Grand Ledge, MI to Earl and Mable (Bennett) Jolls. His childhood was spent in Grand Ledge and then his family moved to Cross Village near Harbor Springs where they continued farming. Warren attended Moody Bible Institute while supporting his parents and graduated in 1944. He was commissioned and ordained by Skeels Baptist Church of Gladwin, MI.
He joined Hiawatha Land Independent Baptist Missions to reach souls where others would not go as a pioneer missionary church planter and received his first church assignment at Van Meer, MI in November of 1944. A month later on December 27 1944 he married Laura Isabelle Bruett in Chicago and brought her to the parsonage at Van Meer where he perfomed his first wedding on that day of his arrival back home. He conducted Bible studies in Shingleton and Ty Mill and after the morning services in Van Meer he would walk six miles to Ty Mill and hold a church service and then walk back again to do the evening service in Van Meer.
After four years he moved to Perkins. Ml to start a new church. While there, he conducted many Bibles studies west of Rock and he was crucial in the opening of the Limestone Baptist Church, moving the former Swedish Lutheran Church huilding to a new site and starting a Baptist Church. For twelve years, he pastored at Perkins and filled the pulpit at Limestone whenever the pulpit was vacant. In 1961, he and Laura moved to Limestone full time and built a home on Atherton Road near Kiva Rev. Jolls as known for his hospital visitation and his door-to-door evangelism. His greatest desire was to see people have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. For thirty-four years, he pastored Limestone Baptist Church, overseeing a new building project after the old church burned down in 1969, soon after a new auditorium had heen built. One time, thirty of the sixty members of the congregation moved away from Limestone in six months in their search for employment. Often having the only car in the neighhorhood, Rev. Jolls sometimes had two pick-up routes hefore church. He would often give people rides into town and was known for witnessing to hitchhikers.
In 1994, Hiawatha Baptist Missions, now called Continental Baptist Missions, declared Warren and Laura, missionaries emeritus after fifty years of faithfull service across the Upper Peninsula. He retired at age seventy-nine, although declaring pastors never truly retire. Rev. Jolls continued calling and witnessing and remained an active church member until last fall when he had a massive heart attack.
Rev. Jolls was predeceased by his father and mother, Earl and Mable Jolls, his brother Earl Jolls of Willmington, NC; his sisters Irene Herner Woolsey of Otisville, MI, and Mrs. Arda Cook of Harbor Springs, MI, and son-in-law Glenn Jones of Prudenville, MI.
Friends and community may call on the family at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Friday, February 8, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. They may also visit from noon until 2:00 p.m. before the funeral service at the Limestone Baptist Church on Saturday, February 9, 2002. The service will be at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Theodore (Ted) Jolls will preside over the services. Dr. Gerald Webber, President of the Continental Baptist Missions will present the sermon. A lunch for all will follow in the church base
ment. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Limestone Township Cemetery.

Donald C. "8-Ball" Harmala
ISHPEMING Donald C. "8-Ball" Harmala, age 68 of 255 Angeline St., Ishpeming, passed away on Wednesday February 6, 2002 at the Marquette General Hospital.
Donald was born in Ishpeming on July 20, 1933 to the late Reino and Hazel (Roberts) Harmala. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1956. He worked for the Marquette County Road Commission for 27 years, retiring in 1994.
Donald was a life member of the Ishpeming V.F.W. the AMVETS and the Rooster Club. Donald attended the Salisbury United Methodist Church. He enjoyed being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren along with spending time at his camp, hunting, fishing and going to the local Casino's.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years Jean Harmala of Ishpeming; 2 sons - Bob (Cindy) Harmala, Donald A. Harmala both of Ishpeming, 3 daughters - Lola Peterson, Carol (Sam) Morcom, and Theresa (Steve) Josephson all of Ishpeming; a brother Ray E. (Joyce) Harmala of Green Bay, WI; 12 grandchildren, Heather, Christie, Nikki and Ryan Harmala, Lynn, Joshua, David and Dawn Peterson, Sheena and Brandon Morcom, Justin (Heather) Josephson and Cory DeRocha; 2 great grandchildren Justice Guidebeck and Hunter Charles Jesephson; and Aunt Ruth Marion Pizziola of Ishpeming; 2 brothers-in-law Andrew and Lowell Bessander; a sister-in-law Jayne Bessander along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday February 9, 2002 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Donelson to officiate. Burial will be in the Ishpeming Cemetery.

Jack E. Elleby
CHAMPION - Jack E. Elleby, age 71, of 161 Co. Rd. AL, Champion, died Wednesday night at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming.
Jack was born on March 1, 1931 in Monroe, MI. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his tour of duty, he worked in the woods as a lumberjack. Jack was an avid fisherman and loved hunting.
Jack is survived by his wife Bonnie of Champion; children, Jackie (Ronald) Skytta of Michigamme, William Elleby of Ishpeming, Jim Prisk of KY, Jamie Prisk and John Prisk; step-children, Dan (Kathy) Manier of Champion, David Manier of Republic, Duane (Lori) Manier of Norway, Dianne (Wayne) Kangas of Ishpeming, Debbie (Dan) Nurmala of Michigamme, Harry (Sue) Manier of Ishpeming, Scott, Terry and Shawn Butler all of Marquette; a sister, Virginia Nelson of NC; five brothers, William, Harry and David Prisk all of Champion, Robert Prisk of Ishpeming and Harold Prisk of Lower Michigan; along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Alice and Harry Prisk and a sister Jane.
At the request of the deceased, cremation will take place. Graveside services will be held in the spring of 2002 at the Champion Cemetery.
