Dr. Herbert Benedict July 31, 1913 - March 2, 2004 Location: VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home, Hillsdale Visitation: No Visitation or Viewing Service: Private Memorial Service Cemetery: No Internment Dr. Ralph Herbert Benedict D.V.M., age 90, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born July 31, 1913 to Rev. Milton & Grace (Fairchild) Benedict. Dr. Benedict was a resident most recently of Country Living and a long time resident of Lake Wilson in Hillsdale. He was a veterinarian practicing in Jonesville and the state of Washington. He was also a federal meat inspector in Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin. Herb was crippled with polio as a youngster and although being disabled, he was an active veterinarian and gardener. Hosta Hillside at Hidden Lake Gardens in Tipton is named in he and his wife Dorothy's honor. He has a honorary life member of the American and Michigan Hosta Society. He is world renown for his hosta, primrose and crested fern propagation and hybridization. He was married Aug. 9, 1936 to Dorothy Frazeur and she preceded him in death August 4, 2002. He was also preceded by brothers, Earl Milton and Ellis LeRoy. Surviving are two brothers, Doyle (Katie) Benedict of Jonesville and Keith (Jean) Benedict of Evansville, Indiana. Cremation has taken place. Private memorial services will take place at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville.
