CAN AND CAN'T.
Can't is a dwarf, a poor, pale, puny sprite,
He limps and half blind he can scarce see the light.
He stumbles, and falls, or lies white with fear,
Though dangers are distant and succor is near.
Can is a giant, unbending he stands,
There is strength in his arms and skill in his hands,
He asks for no favor, he wants but a share.
There labor is honest and wages are fair.
Can't is a coward, half fainting with fright,
At the first thought of peril he shrinks Gold out of sight
Skulks and hides till the noise of battle is past,
He deceives his best friend and turns traitor at last.
Can is a hero, the first in the field. Though others may falter, he never will yield.
He makes the long marches, he deals the last blow,
His charge is the whirlwind that scatters the foe.
Then up and be doing. the day is not long.
Throw fear to the winds, be patient and strong.
Stand fast in your place, act your part like a man,
And, when duty calls answer promptly, "I Can."

To separate education from the progress of the world would be well nigh impossible for their mutual advancement has been inevitable. In mediaeval times learning was confined to a few scholars who gained their knowledge through their own unceasing efforts. Out of the primitive records and sayings of these few scholars the present system of textbooks and teachers has gradually evolved. From a luxury for the richest. education has become commonplace for the poorest.
