ing should moan climbing in moral culture—the making of practical, helpful lives. The men who have helped this world have had not only knowledge but also courage. Moral culture means honesty and virtue and no amount of intellectual ability will make life a success without these.
Climbing means patriotism. It was in response to a call of duty that Michigan contributed her just share in the war of the rebellion and in the Spanish-American war. But patriotism is not alone the response to the country's call in times of danger: it is also the characteristic of those who, in times of peace. strive for public advancement and social betterment—the noblest passion that animates a man in the character of a citizen. We have been educated under the grandest of all banners. It was put above our heads by hands red as its stripes and we must love it. For solving the great questions of this country an intelligent patriotism is needed, and we must help supply it. Then at the end of a useful life death cannot rob us of the knowledge we have gained. The voice of God will translate our old motto, "At the foothills. climbing." into the language of heaven "well done. good and faithful servant, thou bast. been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things."
Members of the Board of Education, Teachers of the High School. Parents and Patrons, we turn to you with hearts full of gratitude for. except by your efforts, we would not have been able to obtain the full benefit of the advantages which this system of education has offered us. Our minds have been lifted up and our souls opened to a more perfect life. You have given us courage and help when we most needed assistance. You have enabled us to accomplish that to which we have been looking forward during the years of our school life. We cannot thank you enough with words. but may our lives reward you for that which you have done for us.
Members of the class of 1917, our school life together has come to a close. but a broader life is opening before us. Our motto urges us to go forward with a greater determination, to he leaders, to have initiative, and not he mere cogs in the wheel of life. Our class spirit has been strong and our fellowship sweet these four short years and it is with a feeling of regret that we realize that we shall meet together as a class
