Scanned text:
50 THE BLUE AND GOLD, '57. would be enthusiastically received by the people of the community. Our Assembly Room could not profitably be considered and investigation and inquiry. unfortunately revealed the fact that a suitable hall or auditorium could not be procured in the Torch Lake towns. A requiem was sung over the proposition. Here we pause. Hf. more specifically. the class of '17 has been disappointed because of inadequate accommodations, the fact that the school as a whole has suffered must be recognized. During the last few years especially, has this been the case. Our regret therefore. is not altogether selfish but results from a desire to expand that could not be gratified. We will cite at least two more school activities in which the classes that preceded us and our own class have been handicaped during our high school careers. In athletics especially, our class has been unable to uphold the school colors as it would have done had facilities been better. The lack of a gymnasium has been keenly felt. We are sure that the athletes of the class of '17 would have nobly upheld the best traditions of L. L. H. S. if the opportunity had been theirs. Again, in the sphere of forensics, our school has been handicapped. While we have had representatives in both branches of high school contests for many years we have never been able to hold the sub-district contests in our city. The blue and gold have been proudly upheld by our representatives in the past. They have made L. L. H. S. a factor to be reckoned with in interscholastic forensics. This ascendancy was won on other platforms than our own. Contestants of other schools have often had the advantage of speaking from their own platforms but our contestants have never had the opportunity. These conditions will be remedied with the completion of the new building. Yet, in spite of the disadvantage enumerated we are heartily glad that better things are in store for the undergraduates of the high school. Our momentary disappointment yields to the vision of a greater future, the achievements of which will shine with added luster because of the greater opportunities. We are glad that the authorities have recognized conditions as they actually are and with a clear perspective have planned for the years to come. The Board of Education and the wide-awake people of the community are to be congratulated for their foresight. We know that the new building will be a conspicuous addition to our city and an object of pride to its people.
