THE BLUE AND GOLD, '17. 65
The strings of deserved scorn, the girl's dejections,
The sad home-coming. and the scoffs Which. peradvertance, from the antagonist come,
When he himself with more of drilling might
Have taken honors? Who would hesitate.
To assume the risk in face of precedent, But for the fact that defeat prospective - The unrelenting foe of progress, whose
toils
'one do escape - freezes our ardor, And makes us rather hold the base we have
Than risk with two men out, De Rocher's skill?
But courage. and the confidence of those With whom we have united to maintain Lake Linden's name upon the athletic
field,
Evinced now and then by timely coach, Thus will increase the score, and crown the goddess
Whose auspicious name is WORK. - Ex.
AN ATHLETICIZE.
Athletics, in my belief, should be given a much more prominent position in the curriculum of the L. L. U. S. All students should turn out for some line of athletic work. They may not make the team. but what of that? They can rest assured that they have done their part, and contributed in a large measure to the success of the team finally selected to represent the school.
All students who are actively interested in athletic work will tell you that they have been greatly benefited by the training received in such work. But what, some of you may say, is the value of this kind of work? Why do the high schools and colleges of today attach so much importance to athletics?
In the first place, one of the primary aims of every school is to teach its students to concentrate. What is better than football, baseball, or any other form of athletics for training the student to concentrate his mind? He must keep his mind on the game every minute or - he takes the bench. He must be alert, always ready to "get the jump" on his opponent. The importance of this cannot be over-emphasized. When the student realize the great value of anticipating his oponents' next move. and then preparing to block it, he will probably thinkthat the same is true in the business world. Nearly everything, then, depends on "getting the jump" on your opponent. The average employer knows this and realizes that students who have been most active in High School athletics are best prepared in that essential element of business, and as a consequence, these students are often the first to be offered positions after graduation.
But more important vet, is the physical development attained through athletics. The fact that all muscles arc brought into action and developed is self-evident. The human race today does not place enough emphasis on the importance of physical development and as a consequence are degenerating physically.
Statistics compiled by the navy department bear out this theory. as only a very small percentage of applicants are qualified to pass the examinations. Therefore parents should encourage students to take part in High School athletics.
They may call attention to the number of athletes that are injured each year, but there are two sides to ever question. They do not take into consideration the larger number who place absolutely too much emphases on study and as a consequence ruin their health. How many students who do not participate in athletics arc nervous wrecks after graduation? I believe that if statistics could be compiled they would show that a larger percentage of students injure themselves through study than through athletics.
Think about it ! and then encourage students to athleticize and make the good old U. S. a nation strong physically as well as mentally.
