Joseph W. Somero, 85, a former resident of Atlantic Mine and Houghton, died on November 30, 1999, at Cypress Manor in Hancock. He was born on October 14, 1914 in Hancock, a son of Joseph and Christine (Parks) Somero. In 1938 he married Edna Holappa in South Range. She died in 1992. He then married Betty Paavola Wirtanen in 1994. Reuben E. Pelkola, 74, of Baraga, died on November 26, 1999. He was born on February 6, 1925, in Paynesville, MI to Nicolas and Hanna (Kustiniemi) Pelkola. Reuben retired from Celotex in L'Anse after 20 years. He was also employed by the Keweenaw Bay Tribal Pow-Pow as a custodian and resident in Baraga for 23 years. He is survived by his wife, Juanita (Bunker); three sons, Nicholas of Pheonix, AZ, Rodney of Chandler, AZ, Reuben, Jr and Monica of Racina, WI; four daughters, Brenda and Shannon Jones of Rockland, Ona and David TeDeschi of Norway, Gail and John Lannet and Dennella (Sam) Deastato of Fairbanks, Alaska; a sister, Eileen Kallio of Jackson, MI; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. F. Hubert Mather, 77, of L'Anse died on November 28, 1999. He was born on August 16, 1922 in Ridgewood, NJ, the son of Frank Hubert and Elsie (Demarest)mather. He was a child prodigy at the organ and an accomplished pianist. He had a degree in Law from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and was in private practice in Lansing before moving to L'Anse in 1962. He was the Baraga County Prosecutor for 25 years. He is survived by a son, Frank of Boston, Mass; a daughter, Roberta and John Nagel of San Francisco, CA; a brother, William of Titusville, FL; a sister, Margaret Eaton of Paramus, NJ; and two grandsons. William Keith Latvis, 43, of Mass City, passed away suddenly of an apparent heart attach on November 26, 1999. He was born on May 5, 1956, the eldest son of William and Betty (Hermanson) Latvis of Mass City. He is survived by his parents; his brother, Jim and Kay and Danny and Val of Mass City; David and Sue of St. Paul, MN; and two sisters, Lisa and Ken Truscott of Greenland and Lynn Rikess of Eagan, MN. John J. Smydra, 85, of Ontonagon, died on November 27, 1999. He was born on August 6, 1914, a son of Miximillian and Julijanna (Sajko) Smydra. He married Ione W. Brown in 1947. Esther A. Rowe, 91, of Calumet, died on November 22, 1999. She was born on October 22, 1908, in Calumet, a daughter of Anna and Ole Olson. She married Wilbur J. Rowe in 1929, he died in 1953. LaVerne Peratalo, 73, a former Calumet resident, died on November 20, 1999. She was born on August 10, 1926, in chicago, a daughter of Fred and Marie Vierke. She was bron November 13, 1910 in Coburntown, a daughter of John and Theresa (Poggione) Fasana. She married Joseph Ceretto in Calumet in 1935. Johanna worked for 20 years as a nurses aide at St. Joseph Hospital in Hancock. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Lucia and Gene Gauthier of Escanaba, Joann and James Federighe of Muskegon; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn Unger of Escanaba. Elsie E. Laplander, 83, of Calumet died on November 21, 1999. Elsie was born on October 22, 1916, in Calumet, a daughter of Einar and Hanna Lindquist. Weldon J. "Sonny" DuLong, 71, of Hubbell, passed away on November 17, 1999. He was born on October 6, 1928, in Hubbell, a son of Eldred and LaNelda (King) DuLong. Amy Beth Bourland, 36, of Calumet, died on November 11th, after a three year battle with cancer. She was born in Hancock on December 18, 1962, a daughter of Wilbert and Edna (Garnell) Lampinen. Amy had worked as a nurses aide at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock. In 1995, she married William Bourland. Robert LaPorte, 61, of Lake Linden, died on November 10th. He was born in Detroit on March 29, 1938, a son of Arthur and Bertha (Massie) LaPorte. Robert is survived by a brother, Raymond and Donna Clouthier of Lake Linden; two nieces, Laura and Amy Clouthier of Lake Linden. Amos C. Turner, 81, of Ishpeming, passed away on November 9, 1999. He was born on September 13, 1918 in Lake Linden, to Amos and Katerina (Romano) Turner. Amos is survived by his wife of 34 years, Ana (Meznar) Turner; and a daughter, Simone and Grant Brown of Chicago. Harold Ruelle, 99, of Chassell, passed away on November 9, 1999. He was born on June 22, 1900, in Dollar Bay. Harold's parents were the owners of Ruelle's Livery Stable which Harold operated as an auto livery with his brother, Walter. The brothers also owned the pool hall in Chassell and Ruelle's Tavern, which is now the Greenlight Bar. They retired from the tavern business in 1967. He is survived by three great nieces. Dorothy L. Iskra, 80, of Wakefield, died on November 7, 1999. She was born to Christopher and Henrietta (Hermann) Kehl on May 29, 1919, in Houghton. She was married to Steve Iskra on October 22, 1939. He died in 1993. She is survived by a son, Stephen and Anita Iskra of Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter, Margaret and Robert Berg of Ramsay; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Alice McKindles, 96, of L'Anse died on Nov. 12, 1999. She was born in Schaffer, MI, on Oct 7, 1903 to Edward and Georgianna (Potvin) Douville. Margaret Graves, 84, formerly of Houghton, died on November 9, 1999. He was a veteran, serving in the US Navy from 1947 to 1952. He married the former Berniece Moilanen in 1952. Phyllis was an employee of Ojibwa Enterprises in Baraga. She was born on April 27, 1907 in Watton, daughter of Arvid and Hilda (Vattari) Salli. She married Eli Nurkala on April 27, 1934, he died in 1944. E. Mabel Wilk, 83, of L'Anse died on Nov. 5,1999. She was born on March 23, 1916, in Pequaming, daughter of Oscar and Edith Olsen. She married Clarence Van in 1934, he died in 1962. She married Charles Wilk in 1966. He preceded her in death in 1986. Mabel worked at Baraga County Hospital ofr 18 years. She owned and operated the Buckhorn Bar in L'anse for 10 years. She is survived by two daughters, Jodie and James Fish of L'Anse, and Patricia and Robert Keippela of Pelkie; a sister, Florence Lefever of Timmons, Ontario, Canada; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren; three step-children; Helen DeCormier, Donald Van and Virginia Carlson; three brothers, Fred, Erling and Vernor Olson; and three sisters, Gerda Larsen, Sigrid Rogers and Ellen Lindstrom. Aliina K. Rajala, 79, of Chassell, died on November 4, 1999. She was born on June 26, 1920, in Toivola, a daughter of Mikael and Susanna (Pasula) Kolehmainen. She married Reino Rajala in 1942, he died in 1979. Aliina had worked mostly for the Community Action Agency where she visited and did errands for the shut-ins. Burial in the Chassell Cemetery. Russell Ashley, 65, of Ontonagon, died on November 2, 1999, after a short battle with cancer. In 1936, he married Elna I. Sved in Dollar Bay. She died in 1993. At age 30, Clem opened the Dollar Bay Department Store which is now the Dollar Bay Linoleum and Tile Company. Clem received many honors, including the Suomi College Award in 1982 (the college's highest award), the Suomi College Entrepreneur Award in 1988, Dail HELP Outstanding Services Award for Community Leadership for 1975-1979, and recognized as MTU co-leader in the original membership drive to organize the Huskies Club athletic scholarship group in 1958, and inducted into the MTU Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. Surviving are three sons, Lee and Barb, of Dollar Bay, Bob and Carla of Dollar Bay, Norm of Belmont, MI; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Tom of Houghton. John W. Wiitanen, 80, former Houghton County Sheriff, passed away on November 3, 1999. He had served Houghton County as Sheriff for 18 years before retiring in 1980. He was born on February 3, 1919 , in Edgemere, a son of Casper and Anna (Paavo) Wiitanen. In 1847, he married Dorothy Simmons. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Gail and David Salmi of Ripley; two granddaughters, Donna Brey of Ripley, Jennifer Brey of Houghton; one grandson, Terry and Cyndy Taylor Brey of Ripley; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Katherine and Mrtin Siekas of Walled Lake: four brothers, Melvin and Mae Wiitanen of Houghton, gordon of Houghton, Carl and Lililan of Gaylord, and Ron and Carol of Houghton. Lillian Ellen Harnish, 94, of Ontonagon, passed away on November 4, 1999. She was born to John and Wilhelmina Arkelin in Pointe Mills. In 1929, she married Ray Harnish who owned grocery stores in Ontonagon, Greenland and Rockland. Ray died in 1955. She was employed at the First National Bank and eventually, became Secretary to the President. Surviving are her daughters, Joyce and Bill Penegor of Twin Lakes, Janice and John Kilmer of Houghton; sisters, Sylvia Swanberg and Jennie Hill, both of Ontonagon; brothers, Roy and Gertie Arkelin of Tyler, TX, and Rudy and Ruth Arkelin of Ontonagon; seven grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Donald Makela, 55, of Hancock Cana, died on November 3, 1999. He was born in Hancock on January 24, 1944, a son of Hubert and Gertrude (Erva) Makela. He graduated from Hancock High School in 1962, and then from Michigan Tech in 1966 with a degree in Business Administration. He was employed at Upper Peninsula Power Company and was currently employed at the Frank A. Douglas Agency in Houghton. He married Margaret Korpinen of Hancock in 1968. |
