Reuben E. Pelkola, 74, of Baraga, died on November 26, 1999. He was born on February 6, 1925, in Paynesville, MI to Nicolas and Hanna (Kustiniemi) Pelkola. Reuben retired from Celotex in L'Anse after 20 years. He was also employed by the Keweenaw Bay Tribal Pow-Pow as a custodian and resident in Baraga for 23 years. He is survived by his wife, Juanita (Bunker); three sons, Nicholas of Pheonix, AZ, Rodney of Chandler, AZ, Reuben, Jr and Monica of Racina, WI; four daughters, Brenda and Shannon Jones of Rockland, Ona and David TeDeschi of Norway, Gail and John Lannet and Dennella (Sam) Deastato of Fairbanks, Alaska; a sister, Eileen Kallio of Jackson, MI; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

F. Hubert Mather, 77, of L'Anse died on November 28, 1999. He was born on August 16, 1922 in Ridgewood, NJ, the son of Frank Hubert and Elsie (Demarest)mather. He was a child prodigy at the organ and an accomplished pianist. He had a degree in Law from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and was in private practice in Lansing before moving to L'Anse in 1962. He was the Baraga County Prosecutor for 25 years. He is survived by a son, Frank of Boston, Mass; a daughter, Roberta and John Nagel of San Francisco, CA; a brother, William of Titusville, FL; a sister, Margaret Eaton of Paramus, NJ; and two grandsons.

William Keith Latvis, 43, of Mass City, passed away suddenly of an apparent heart attach on November 26, 1999. He was born on May 5, 1956, the eldest son of William and Betty (Hermanson) Latvis of Mass City. He is survived by his parents; his brother, Jim and Kay and Danny and Val of Mass City; David and Sue of St. Paul, MN; and two sisters, Lisa and Ken Truscott of Greenland and Lynn Rikess of Eagan, MN.

John J. Smydra, 85, of Ontonagon, died on November 27, 1999. He was born on August 6, 1914, a son of Miximillian and Julijanna (Sajko) Smydra. He married Ione W. Brown in 1947. He is survived by eight children, Michael and Laura of Mackinaw City, Patricia of Lansing, Anthony of Lansing, Joseph and Lea of Eagle River, Alaska, Julie and Kenneth Ranta of Spring Lake, Margaret and Daniel Fett of Spring Lake, Jean of Lansing, Andrew and Rachel of Rochester; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Beverly Hocking, 66, of Ahmeek, passed away on November 27, 1999. She is survived by a brother, Fred and Doris of Manitowac, WI and 13 nieces and nephews.

Betty Bryant, 72, of Houghton, passed away on November 26, 1999. Betty was born on January 12, 1927, in Hancock, the daughter of John and Belle Almlie. She is survived by three daughters, Cyndy and Jerry Quello of Hancock, Judy Bryant of Houghton, Kathy and David Plowe of Houghton; two sons, John of Houghton, Jim of Great Lakes Naval BAse; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack and Karen Almlie of Wausau, WI. Burial in the Forest Hill Cemetery.

Kathleen Junttonen, 57, of Highway Location, died on November 24, 1999. She was born November 6, 1942, in Liminga, a daughter of Yalmer and Edna (Autio) Frandy. She married Calvin C. Junttonen in 1978. She is survived by her husband; one uncle, two aunts; and numerous cousins. Burial in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

Charles Stobbelaar, 84, of Marquette, died on November 22, 1999. He was born on June 8, 1915, in Grand Rapids to Herman and Marry (Veneklausen) Stobbelaar. Charles is survived by a daughter, Mary and Glenn Koskela of Marquette, two sons; Gordon and Ann of Roanoke, VA and Scott and Lynn of Marquette; a brother Jack and Jane of Stewart, FL; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Marilyn Agnes Kinnunen, 67, of Ishpeming died on November 23, 1999. She was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Wakefield, the daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Hanesak) Forslund. She married Gilbert Kinnunen in 1962. Marilyn is survived by four sons, David of Ironwood, Graig and Goerganne of Franktown, CO, Scott and Ann of Manitowoc, WI, James and Rene of Ishpeming; two brothers, Donald and Shirley Forslund of Wakefield and Jake Forslund of Milwaukee; a sister, Karen Jacobson of West Bend, IN; step father, Toivo Tankka, and 6 grandchildren.

Esther A. Rowe, 91, of Calumet, died on November 22, 1999. She was born on October 22, 1908, in Calumet, a daughter of Anna and Ole Olson. She married Wilbur J. Rowe in 1929, he died in 1953. Esther is survived by a son, Albert and Daryl Rowe of Lake Mills, Iowa; two daughters, Ann and Robert Batten of Menominee, Betty and Jude Kalcich of Lake Linden; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

LaVerne Peratalo, 73, a former Calumet resident, died on November 20, 1999. She was born on August 10, 1926, in chicago, a daughter of Fred and Marie Vierke. LaVerne married Walter Peratalo in 1944 and he died in 1992. She is survived by a niece, Debbie Maracich of Darien, IL.

Johanna C. Ceretto, 89, of Hancock, passed away on November 19, 1999. She was bron November 13, 1910 in Coburntown, a daughter of John and Theresa (Poggione) Fasana. She married Joseph Ceretto in Calumet in 1935. Johanna worked for 20 years as a nurses aide at St. Joseph Hospital in Hancock. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Lucia and Gene Gauthier of Escanaba, Joann and James Federighe of Muskegon; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathryn Unger of Escanaba.

Elsie E. Laplander, 83, of Calumet died on November 21, 1999. Elsie was born on October 22, 1916, in Calumet, a daughter of Einar and Hanna Lindquist. She is survived by three sons, Donald of Florida Location, Leslie and Debra of Milwaukee, WI, Douglas of Calumet; two daughters, Barbara and Bruce Haataja, of Centennial Heights, Elaine and David Dings, of New Berlin, WI; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian and Orville Moyses of Lake View, MI.

Edwin Ben Kinnunen, 78, of Baraga, died on November 19, 1999. Ben was born on March 3, 1921, in Alston, a son of Alex and Anna Kyllonen Kinnunen. He married Mildred Hiltunen, she preceded him in death in 1990. He drove truck for Gitche-Gumee Oil Co for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He is survived by his son Walter and Dorothy of Baraga; a brother A. Frederick and Ruth of L'Anse, a sister, Lillian and Bart Cady of Northville, MI; and five grandchildren.

Anne J. Rajala, 65, of Marquette passed away on November 21, 1999. She was born on May 29, 1934, in Baraga, a daughter of Fred and Mary (Vizina) Miron. In 1955, she married Stanley C. Rajala. She is survived by her husband; four daughter, Lori and James Pelkola, Barbara and Michael Baker, Diane Stacey and Patricia and Dale Hillier, all of Marquette; four sons, Steven of Marquette, Niel and Irene of Grand Rapids, Scott and Jenna of Escanaba, and David and Kathie of Marquette; 22 grandchildren; three sisters, Eleanor Piper of Pocatello Idaho, Madeline and John Seldon and Bernice Sorelle, both of Marquette; two brothers, Kenneth and Pearl Miron of Chassell, and Claude and Darlene Miron of Hancock.

Walter Oja, 86, of Chatham, died on November 17, 1999. He was born on October 29, 1913, in Loudspur, MI to Jacob and Mary (Koski) Oja. He served in the US Army during WWII in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Wally married Saima Jussila. She died in 1968. He then married Tyyne Sturvist, she died in 1993. He is survived by a brother, Edward of Chatham; three step-sons, Jerry and Eleanor Sturvist of Pittsburgh, PE, Don and Judy Sturvist of Lake Linden, and John and Linda Sturvist of Rumely; four step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; three nephews; and three grand nephews.

Weldon J. "Sonny" DuLong, 71, of Hubbell, passed away on November 17, 1999. He was born on October 6, 1928, in Hubbell, a son of Eldred and LaNelda (King) DuLong. He was employed by Calumet and Hecla for 20 years, first as a miner and later, as a crane operator. He later worked for White Pine Copper Co. In 1947, he married Janet Isola. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Robert of Green Bay, James of Hubbell; six daughters, Sharon and James Murphy of Laurium, Patricia and Dean Paananen of Dollar Bay, Nancy and Frances Bessner of lake Linden, Janet Hendrickson of Hubbell, Charlene Klein of Kiel, WI, Jacquelyn Huuki of Houghton, 27 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman and Elsie Dulong of Ripley; three sisters, Aileen and Jack Andrews of Hancock, Therese and Jean Dimet of Lansing, and Gloria and Raymond Karvonen of Atlantic Mine.

Nana Kristina Kuivanen, 87, of Pelkie, died on November 17, 1999. Nana was born on November 7, 1912, in Paavola, to Leander and Katri (Rautiola)Tepsa. She married Edward Kuivanen in 1937. He preceded her in death in 1963. Surviving are two daughters, Katherine and James Wuori of Rochester Hills and Rebecca and Ernest OZ of Dearborn; a son Edward and Pamela of AuTrain; 5 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Ala of DeLand, FL.

Eunice P. Murtovara, 68, of Chassell, died on November 15, 1999. She was born September 19, 1931, in Chassell, a daughter of William and Elma (Jacobson) Murtovara. She is survived by two brothers, William of Chassell and Wallace and Sharon of Lakeville, MN; a sister, Margaret and Clarence Olson of Rochester Hills, MI; and a brother-in-law, John Clark of Payson, AZ.

Anthony J. Locatelli, 92, of Laurium died on November 15th. He was born in Laurium on March 26, 1907, a son of Peter D. and Gilia (Masnada) Locatelli. He married Anna Sandretto in 1935. Tony is survived by his wife; a daughter, Janet; sons, Anthony and Phyllis, Bernard and Paul, all of Laurium; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Louise Jane Dunleavy, 73, of Marquette, died Nov. 13, 1926 at Bay Mills, MI, to John and Hattie (Spruce) Misegan. She is survived by five children; Patrick and Lynn of Arcadia, John of Marquette, and Katherine and Jeff Johnston, of Marquette, Karen and Darryl Bengry of Ishpeming and Ardis and Charles Holappa of Palmer; a brother, Isadore Misegan of Baraga; two sisters, Patricia Hickman of Orion, MI and Annabelle DeCota of Maraga. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph C. Lindemann, 78, of Baraga, died on November 13, 1999. Joseph was born March 3, 1921, in Baraga, to Nicholas and Marie (Ricken) Lindemann. He married Helen Eliason in Detroit in 1943. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Dianna and Sam Clark of Dandridge, TN and Carolyn Stachura of Madison Heights, MI; a brother, Nicholas of baraga; three sisters, Elsie A. Byrne and Helen M. Tangen, both of Baraga, and Ruth and Ernest Gryka of Royal Oak.

Helen I. Collins, 76, of Skanee, died on Nov. 13, 1999. Helen was born on December 29, 1922, at the family home in Aura to Matt and Hilma (Ahonen) Koski. Helen worked in sevral restaurants over the years, at the L'Anse courthouse, Winkler Nursing Home, the Skanee store, and she worked as a cook at the Skanee School. She is survived by four daughters, Marilyn and Joe Majeski of Skanee, Diane and Jess Roth of Big Rapids, Raylene and Nick Roth of L'Anse, and Jill and Rev. Mike botsford of Lake Nebagamon, WI; a brother, Roy Koski of Aura; two sisters, Dora Waisanen of Dollar Bay and Irene Honkala of Aura; a sister-in-law, Signe Koski of Aura; nine stepchildren; 11 grandchildren; 21 step grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 25 step great grandchildren; and three step great great granchildren. Burial in the Skanee Cemetery.

Charles "Chip" Taivaloja, 60, of Laurium, died on November 12th. He was born on December 13, 1938, in Wells, MI, a son of Jenny and Yalmer Taivaloja. Surviving are two daughters, Jenny Jo of Bay City, Tammy Ruonavaara of Calumet; a son Norman Ruonavaara of Fl; two granddaughters, a grandson; and a sister, Sherry Hodges of Calumet.

Myrtle G. Vage, 86, of L'Anse died on Nov. 12, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander, WI. She was born on Feb. 5, 1913 in Pequaming to Alfred and Christina (Pettersen) Hansen. She married Sulo Pasanen and after his death, she married William Vage. Myrtle is survived by four grandchildren, Debra and Stephen Marshall, Cheryl and Rob Riopel, Lana Amett, and Blain and Deborah Pasanen all of Rhinelander, WI; seven great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and a sister, Aurelia Douville of L'Anse.

Amy Beth Bourland, 36, of Calumet, died on November 11th, after a three year battle with cancer. She was born in Hancock on December 18, 1962, a daughter of Wilbert and Edna (Garnell) Lampinen. Amy had worked as a nurses aide at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock. In 1995, she married William Bourland. She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Tori Bree at home; two sons, Nathaniel Jones and William Jones; four sisters, Sandra and Kenneth Armstrong of San Bruno, CA, JoAnn Ek of Houghton, Gail and Richard Beers of Big Flats, NY, Anne and Daniel Coponen of Atlantic Mine; three brothers, David and Karen Lampinen of Manila, Phillipines, Anthony and Marsha Lampinen of Houghton, and Kim and Sharon Lampinen of Atlantic Mine.

Floy A. Rule Edgar, 70, of Calumet, died on November 11, 1999. She was born on September 28, 1929, in Clearlake, IO, a daughter of Zed and Laura (Floy)Edgar. She married Archibald Edgar on November 25, 1920. She is survived by two daughters, Ann and Don MEntink of Laurium, Lynn Dillaha of San Diego, CA; two sons, Lee Edgar of San Diego, CA, Tim Edgar of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a sister, Charlene Rule of Calumet; and a brother, Rod Rule of Kansas.

Carlo J. Asiala, 78, of South Range, died on November 10th. He was born on September 5, 1921, in South Range, a son of Josua and Henna (Lassila) Asiala. Carlo worked for 21 years at the Star Bakery and for 15 years in food service at Michigan Tech, retiring in 1983. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Asiala of hancock.

Robert LaPorte, 61, of Lake Linden, died on November 10th. He was born in Detroit on March 29, 1938, a son of Arthur and Bertha (Massie) LaPorte. Robert is survived by a brother, Raymond and Donna Clouthier of Lake Linden; two nieces, Laura and Amy Clouthier of Lake Linden.

Amos C. Turner, 81, of Ishpeming, passed away on November 9, 1999. He was born on September 13, 1918 in Lake Linden, to Amos and Katerina (Romano) Turner. Amos is survived by his wife of 34 years, Ana (Meznar) Turner; and a daughter, Simone and Grant Brown of Chicago.

Harold Ruelle, 99, of Chassell, passed away on November 9, 1999. He was born on June 22, 1900, in Dollar Bay. Harold's parents were the owners of Ruelle's Livery Stable which Harold operated as an auto livery with his brother, Walter. The brothers also owned the pool hall in Chassell and Ruelle's Tavern, which is now the Greenlight Bar. They retired from the tavern business in 1967. He is survived by three great nieces.

Dorothy L. Iskra, 80, of Wakefield, died on November 7, 1999. She was born to Christopher and Henrietta (Hermann) Kehl on May 29, 1919, in Houghton. She was married to Steve Iskra on October 22, 1939. He died in 1993. She is survived by a son, Stephen and Anita Iskra of Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter, Margaret and Robert Berg of Ramsay; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Alice McKindles, 96, of L'Anse died on Nov. 12, 1999. She was born in Schaffer, MI, on Oct 7, 1903 to Edward and Georgianna (Potvin) Douville. She is survived by two sons, NOrman and Marilyn McKindles, Jr. of L'Anse and Patrick and Jean McKindles of Florida; two daughters, Lucille and Earl Schultz of L'Anse and Mary Alice and Tuffy Havel of Big Bay; a sister, Leona Hartman of Waukegan, IL; 21 grandchildren; and 28 great grandchldren.

Margaret Graves, 84, formerly of Houghton, died on November 9, 1999. She was born on April 24, 1915, in Ahmeek, a daughter of Daniel and Clara (McKenna) Chopp. She was employed by the Douglas House in Houghton, and for 26 years, J.C. Penney Company until her retirement. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy and Leon Carlson of Danburg, CT; two grandsons; one great grandson, and a brother, John Hahn of Detroit. Burial in the Lake View Cemetery.

Louis Lombardi, 87, of Calumet, died on November 9, 1999. He was born in Adams Township on March 13, 1912, a son of Vincent and Marta (parenti) Lombardi. Louis married Mayme Novak in Calumet in 1937. Mayme died in 1990. He is survived by four daughters, Joan and Ben Koskiniemi of Tucson, AZ, Martha and Frank Cuff of Lake Linden, patricia and Alan Webster of McMillan, Mary Lou and Jim Kessler of Winchester, CA; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a brother, Flore and Leah Lombardi of Royal Oak; and three sisters, Elsie Iskra, Mary Lombardi and Margaret Lombardi, all of South Range.

Gordon A. Nordstrom, 69, of Jacobsville, passed away on November 7, 1999. Gordon was born on January 14, 1930, in Calumet, a son of Albert and Amanda (Johnson) Nordstrom. He was a veteran, serving in the US Navy from 1947 to 1952. He married the former Berniece Moilanen in 1952. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Carl and Thomas of San Francisco, CA; two daughters, Cindy and Robert Miller of Maple Rapids, MI, Lynn and Bruce Mervien of Saratoga Springs, NY; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two brothers, Carl and Sue Nordstrom of Linwood, MI, James and Marilyn Nordstrom of Belleville, MI; two sisters, Eleanor and Robert Nordbeck of Gas City, IN, and Mary Jane Bruneau of Hancock.

Clarence "Dar" Darcy, 77, of Tamarack City, passed away on November 6, 1999. He was born on September 23, 1922 in Baraga, a son of Edward and Mary (Neveau) Darcy. He was employed by the Dollar Bay School System for 29 years, retiring in 1986. In 1948, he married Lorraine Johnson in Lake Linden. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine; a daughter, Marie and Michael Isaacson of Dollar Bay; a son Donald and Lynn Darcy of Tamarack City; three grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine and Robert Weirauch of Tamarack City.

Phyllis Egbert, 58, of Baraga, died on November 5, 1999. She was born in Charlotte, MI, on October 20, 1941, a daughter of Leonard and Irene (Pine)Hodges. She married Chuck Egbert on March 1, 1962. Phyllis was an employee of Ojibwa Enterprises in Baraga. Surviving are her husban, Chuck; two sons, Leonard and Toni of Baraga and Steven of Manistee; two daughters, Tamara and Stacey Patterson of Holt, MI and Kimberly and Rob Garner of Baraga; seven grandchildren, a brother, Keith Hodges of Bradenton, FL; and a sister-in-law, Sandy Thelen of Lansing. Burial in the Baraga Cemetery.

Andrew C. Miller, 88, of Keweenaw Bay, died on November 6, 1999. He was born April 21, 1911, in Murryville, PA, a son of Adolph and Laura Miller. In 1944 he married Helen Harju in New York. He is survived by his wife; a half brother, Roland Silvis of Murryville, PA; a niece, Laura Pearson, and two other nieces and two nephews. Burial in the Veteran's Plot of the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range.

Lydia I. Holmes, 85, of Dollar Bay, died on November 5, 1999. She was born February 17, 1914, in Dollar Bay, a daughter of Emil and Matilda (Anderson) Holmes. She is survived by a brother, David and Fern Holmes of New Buffalo, MI and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Alma D. Nurkala, 92, of Milwaukee, formerly of Watton, died on Nov. 5, 1999. She was born on April 27, 1907 in Watton, daughter of Arvid and Hilda (Vattari) Salli. She married Eli Nurkala on April 27, 1934, he died in 1944. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret and Richard McClintock of Milwaukee; two brothers, Toivo and Eino Salli of Watton; two grandchildren, Julie and John Albright and Chris and Pamela McClintock; and three great-grandchildren.

E. Mabel Wilk, 83, of L'Anse died on Nov. 5,1999. She was born on March 23, 1916, in Pequaming, daughter of Oscar and Edith Olsen. She married Clarence Van in 1934, he died in 1962. She married Charles Wilk in 1966. He preceded her in death in 1986. Mabel worked at Baraga County Hospital ofr 18 years. She owned and operated the Buckhorn Bar in L'anse for 10 years. She is survived by two daughters, Jodie and James Fish of L'Anse, and Patricia and Robert Keippela of Pelkie; a sister, Florence Lefever of Timmons, Ontario, Canada; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren; three step-children; Helen DeCormier, Donald Van and Virginia Carlson; three brothers, Fred, Erling and Vernor Olson; and three sisters, Gerda Larsen, Sigrid Rogers and Ellen Lindstrom.

Aliina K. Rajala, 79, of Chassell, died on November 4, 1999. She was born on June 26, 1920, in Toivola, a daughter of Mikael and Susanna (Pasula) Kolehmainen. She married Reino Rajala in 1942, he died in 1979. Aliina had worked mostly for the Community Action Agency where she visited and did errands for the shut-ins. Surviving are a daughter, Susan and Robert Peterson of Chassell; two granddaughters, Lisa Peterson of Wayzata, MN, Mari and (Tom Bushey) Peterson of St. Paul, MN; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs Aino Pykkonen, Mrs Aiileen Britz, and nieces, nephews and cousins. Burial in the Chassell Cemetery.

Russell Ashley, 65, of Ontonagon, died on November 2, 1999, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on February 25, 1934, in Green Bay, a son of Oliver and Martha (martell) Ashley. Russell worked on the railroad retiring in 1994 after 43 years of service. He married Donna Mae (Vannieuwenhoven) on May 7, 1955. He is survived by his wife and six children; Wayne and Deborbia of South Carolian, Gerald and Diane of Wy, Linda and Douglas Proper of Lansing, Alan and Julie of Ontonagon, David and Bobbie of CO, Todd of FL; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Doloris Tomchek of Suamico, WI, Rosella Vander Elzen of Swamic, WI, and Patty and Cliff North of Green Bay. Burial in the Holy Family Cemetery.

Clemeth L. Banfield, 82, of Dollar Bay died on November 1, 1999. He was born on December 18, 1916, in Houghton, a son William and Harriet (Ripper) Banfield. In 1936, he married Elna I. Sved in Dollar Bay. She died in 1993. At age 30, Clem opened the Dollar Bay Department Store which is now the Dollar Bay Linoleum and Tile Company. Clem received many honors, including the Suomi College Award in 1982 (the college's highest award), the Suomi College Entrepreneur Award in 1988, Dail HELP Outstanding Services Award for Community Leadership for 1975-1979, and recognized as MTU co-leader in the original membership drive to organize the Huskies Club athletic scholarship group in 1958, and inducted into the MTU Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. Surviving are three sons, Lee and Barb, of Dollar Bay, Bob and Carla of Dollar Bay, Norm of Belmont, MI; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Tom of Houghton.

John W. Wiitanen, 80, former Houghton County Sheriff, passed away on November 3, 1999. He had served Houghton County as Sheriff for 18 years before retiring in 1980. He was born on February 3, 1919 , in Edgemere, a son of Casper and Anna (Paavo) Wiitanen. In 1847, he married Dorothy Simmons. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Gail and David Salmi of Ripley; two granddaughters, Donna Brey of Ripley, Jennifer Brey of Houghton; one grandson, Terry and Cyndy Taylor Brey of Ripley; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Katherine and Mrtin Siekas of Walled Lake: four brothers, Melvin and Mae Wiitanen of Houghton, gordon of Houghton, Carl and Lililan of Gaylord, and Ron and Carol of Houghton.

Lillian Ellen Harnish, 94, of Ontonagon, passed away on November 4, 1999. She was born to John and Wilhelmina Arkelin in Pointe Mills. In 1929, she married Ray Harnish who owned grocery stores in Ontonagon, Greenland and Rockland. Ray died in 1955. She was employed at the First National Bank and eventually, became Secretary to the President. Surviving are her daughters, Joyce and Bill Penegor of Twin Lakes, Janice and John Kilmer of Houghton; sisters, Sylvia Swanberg and Jennie Hill, both of Ontonagon; brothers, Roy and Gertie Arkelin of Tyler, TX, and Rudy and Ruth Arkelin of Ontonagon; seven grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Donald Makela, 55, of Hancock Cana, died on November 3, 1999. He was born in Hancock on January 24, 1944, a son of Hubert and Gertrude (Erva) Makela. He graduated from Hancock High School in 1962, and then from Michigan Tech in 1966 with a degree in Business Administration. He was employed at Upper Peninsula Power Company and was currently employed at the Frank A. Douglas Agency in Houghton. He married Margaret Korpinen of Hancock in 1968.
