Rose O'Connor, 84, of Houghton, died on January 23, 2000. She was born in Houghton on February 24, 1915, a daughter of Mary (O'Neill) and James McGuire. She was married to Kenneth O'Connor in 1940. He died in 1978. She is survived by a dauthter, Mary Kerttu of Dodgeville; two sons, Kenneth and Brenda O'Connor of Houghton and Joseph O'Connor of LaPort, TX; two grandchildren; one great granddaughter; a sister, Elizabeth DeRoche; a brother, and John McGuire of Traverse City.

Mary Oila Graham, 39, formerly of Mohawk, died on January 20th, in Sarasota, FL, as the result of an auto accident. She was born on May 12, 1960, in Laurium, a daughter of Judith and Edwin Oila. She was employed as an RN for Doctor's Hospital in Sarasota. She is survived by her husband Kirby; her mother, Judith of Mohawk, a brother, Dan and Bobbie of Sarasota, FL; two sisters, Rita and Charles Wilson of Elkview, WV, Kristina and David Simoni of Hadley, MI; and aunt, Florence and Robert Breault of Mohawk; two uncles, Gordon Kivela of Mohawk, and LeRoy and Millicent Kivel of Bootjack.

Marilyn DeMars, 44, of Lake Linden, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center on Jan. 22, 2000, following an apparent heart attack. She was born in Calumet, March 11, 1955, a daughter of Mildred (Jurmu) Hendrickson. Marilyn and her husband Dennis own and operate DeMars Market in Lake Linden since 1992. She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Amanda, at home; her mother, Mildred of Traprock Valley; a brother, Danny of Calumet; two sisters, Vicky and John Schmitt of Traprock Valley, and Candace and Calvin Harju of Traprock Valley.

Jayne Donald, 65, of Calumet, died on January 22nd. She was born on July 12, 1934, in Calumet, a daughter of Leola C. and Harry S. Donald. Jayne is survived by two cousins, Donald and Sarah Peterlin of Hancock, and Rev. Michael Peterlin of Escanaba.

Edith E. Gregorich, 79 of Ahmeek, died on January 22, 2000, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on November 17, 1920, in Calumet, the daughter of Hilda and Thomas Kaipio. She married William Gregorich in 1940. William passed away in 1996. Edith is survived by a son, Bernard and Jill of Madison Heights, MI; a daughter, Susan and Robert Hall of Mohawk; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas and Marion Kaipio of Boston Location, Werner and Joy Kaipio of Pheonix, AZ, Donald and Sheila Kaipio of Highway Location; two sisters, Laila and Carl Niemi of Oneco, MI, Shirley Wilson of Madison Heights, MI, and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Florence A. Dionne, 91, of Ripley, passed away of January 22, 2000. She was born in Houghton December 4, 1908, a daughter of Joseph and Julia (Miron) Sylvestre. In 1935, she married Francis Dionne, they owned Dionne's Ripley Store for over 50 years. Florence is survived by a sister-in-law, Kathleen Sylvestre of Houghton and by several nieces and nephews.

Arthur L. Kinonen, 69, of Baraga, died on January 22, 2000. He was born on June 17, 1930, in Tamarack Location, a son of Margaret and Arthur E. Kinonen. In 1952, he married Florence Peters. He is survived by his wife; a daughter Janice Cote of Keweenew Bay; a son, Arthur and Janice of Oak Harbor, WA; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Dennis and Delores of Copper City; and and uncle, Albert and Bertha Kinonen of Albion, MI.

Wilbert F. Rautiola, 87, of Chassell, died on January 25, 2000. He was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Paavola, a son of Matt and Santra (Luokinen) Rautiola. He married Vilma S. Linna in 1942. Wilbert is survived by his wife; a son , David and Bobbie of Ohio; two grandchildren, Nancy of Kentucky and Beth of CA; and a brother, Arthur of Manistique.

Lorraine E. Joyal, 59, of Dollar Bay, died on January 24, 2000. She was born on March 1, 1940, in Dollar Bay, a daughter of Arthur and Irene (Carlson) Olson. In 1961, she married Stanley Joyal and he preceded her in death in 1984. She is survived by two daughter, Bethany of Marinette, WI, Shanna of Hancock; and a sister, Shirley Borsum of Dollar Bay.

Mary E. Cocking, 78, of Rice Lake, died on January 22, 2000. She was born on February 2, 1921 in Calumet, a daughter of Mary and John Stukel. She married John L. Cocking in 1942, she died on Jan. 23, 1999. Mary is survived by four sons, Thomas and Kathy of Gainesville, FL, John and Mary of Oak Creek, WI, James and Lula of San Antonio, TX, Joseph and Nancy of Oak Creek, WI; five daughters, Mary and William Sears of Wasilla, AK, Kathleen and Ibraham Mandilawi of Alburquerque, NM, Jule Ann Smith of Waukesha, WI, Terry and Norman Brehm of Pewaukee, WI, Jennifer Cocking of Hancock; 18 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a brother, and James and Shirley Stukel of Cross Junction, VA.

Rev. Fr. James M. Hebein, 68, of Vulcan, died on January 19, 2000. He was born on June 26, 1931, in Iron Mountain, the son of Jacob and Jennie (Ciohetto) Hebein. In 1949, he graduated from St. Lawrence Seminary High School in Mt. Calavary, WI in 1951. He received an A.A. degree from St. Lawrence Seminary, in 1954, he received his M.A. degree from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. and received his S.T.L. degree at North American College in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Marquette on December 8, 1957 in Rome. Fr. Hebein is survived by two brothers, Joseph and Audrey Hebein of Milwaukee, WI, Peter and Sheila Hebein of Evanston, IL; a sister, Mary and Daniel Benzinger of Milwaukee, WI; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Interment in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.

Raymond D. Satterly, 95, of Ishpeming, died on January 21, 2000. Ray was born on August 10, 1904, in Hubbell to Joseph and Emma (Trevillion) Satterly. Ray was a graduate of Houghton High School and Michigan Tech with BSA and EM degrees and attended the Harvard Business School Advance Management Training Program. Over his career he was General Manager of Mines for Inland Steel Company and Vice President of Caland Ore Company of Canada. He is survived by a son, David and Fritz of Boulder, CO; and a grandson, Philip and Julia of Littleton, CO.

Mabel Anderson, 78, of Calumet, died on January 21, 2000. Mabel was born October 2, 1921, in Old Colony, a daughter of Charles and Hilda (Niemila) Leinonen. In 1942 she married Robert Anderson. She is survived by four daughters; Dawn Michaels of Pittsburg, PA, Karen and Charles Fleming of Santa Cruz, CA, Christine Orestand of Pheonix, AZ., Phyllis and James Vertin of Laurium; two sons, Dennis and Sally of LaGrange Park, IL., Robert of Calumet; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Linus G. Pepin, 79, of Lake Linden, died on January 20, 2000. He was born in Lake Linden August 3, 1920, a son of Dolphis and Albina (Bedore) Pepin. He was employed by Quincy Mining Co in the smelter for over 35 years, retiring in 1971. He married Barbara Strucel in 1942, she preceded him in death in 1981. He is survived by two sons; Keigh of Bootjack, Ken and Lora Lee of Hubbell; two daughters, Karen and Allen Basto of Ishpeming, Dianne and Ed DeForge of Lake Linden; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gordon of Sho Low AZ, Russell and Pat of Hazel Park; two sisters, Delores Adams of CO, and Pricella Johnson of Royal Oak.

Ward Francis Gauthier, 68, formerly of Baraga, died on January 23, 2000. Mr. Gauthier was a retired United States Marine Corp Master Gunnery Sergeant having served 32 years in the USMC. He is survived by his wife, Frances; brother Marvin of Florida; sister, Nancy Sirard of MI; and two step-daughters.

Ralph Turpeinen, 68, of Aura, died on Jan 22nd. He was born Oct. 17, 1931, in Pequaming, the son of Otto and Helmi (Koppana) Turpeinen. He is survived by stepson Carl, of Chicago; step-daughter Robin Devlin of Warwick, RI; sister, Lila Lehto of Ishpeming; and five grandchildren.

George "Glen" Matthews, 66, of Green Bay died on Jan. 21st. He was born in Zeba on Aug. 3, 1933, son of George and Charlotte (Blaker) Matthews. He married the former Judy Smith and had been employed as a machine operator for the James River Corp for 32 years. He retired in 1990. Glen is survived by his wife; children, Geraldine and Geno Woodford of Green Bay, Elizabeth of Springhill, MO, Robert and Erika of Green Bay, Gary of Green Bay, Charlotte of Green Bay; 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; brothers, Amos Whetung of Seattle, WA, Donald and Claudia Whetung of Greenleaf, WI, Ted Whetung of Marquette, Matt Whetung of Zeba and Albert and Elsie of Oconto, WI; sisters, Myrtle Tolonen and Elizabeth Matthews, both of Zeba.

Doris M. Bullock, 84, of Marquette, died Jan. 20th. Doris was born in L'Anse on Jan. 9, 1916, to Meador and Rosebelle (Deschaine)Seavoy. Doris formerly worked for the US Postal Service in L'Anse, Paine Webber, Jackson and Curits, and the Child Aid and Family Services. She also managed and later purchased the Janzen Hotel in Marquette. In 1984, she gave the hotel to the citizens of Marquette. She is survived by three children, David and Mary Beth of Marquette and Robert and Linda of Milwaukee and two grandchildren.

Elvi Seppanen, 88, formerly of Pequaming, died on Jan. 19, 2000, in Arcadia, CA. The former Elviira Karki was born on June 27, 1911 to Henry Karki and Mary Ketunen in Haapavesi, Finland. Elvi emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1930 and then moved to Port Arthur Ontario. She married Arvo Seppanen in 1939. She is survived by her son, roy and Ellen Seppanen of Arcadia, CA and grandson, John and Deanna Seppanen of New York, NY.

Cyril Clark, 90, of Ontonagon, died on Jan. 19, 2000. He was born in Sagola, MI, December 15, 1909, the son of John and Sarah Clark. In 1937, he married Gladys Casey. He is survived by five grandchildren, Daniel and Robyn of Conroe, TX, Crystal of Birmingham, AL, Kevin of Ontonagon, Kyle of Fort Polk, LA, Kelly of Ontonagon; and two great-granddaughters.

Willis Olson, 79, of L'Anse died on January 17th. He was born on August 10, 1920, in Skanee, son of David and Signe (Hammerberg) Olson. He married Barbara Johnson in 1944, she died in 1992. Mr. Olson was employed with the L'Anse Township Schools from 1947-76 where over the course of his career served as teacher, counselor, principal and superintendent. He is survived by a son, Rod and Linda Olson of Glen Ellyn, IL.

Michael Anthony Bell, stillborn infant son of Kelly Davis and Michael Bell died on January 13, 2000. He is survived by his parents and a sister Rebekah Mayzes; grandparents, Sandra Davis and Jeannette and James Hosey.

Hilma J. Bakkila, 85, formerly of Chassell, died on January 17, 2000, in Grand Island, NY. The former Hilma Savalox was born August 29, 1914 in Chassell and live there for her lifetime, moving to New York seven years ago. She is survived by a grandson, Jarl and Lynn Bakkila of Grand Island, NY and four great grandchildren. Spring burial in the Chassell Cemetery.

Marjorie O'Connor, 90, of Houghton, passed away on January 18, 2000. She was born on July 2, 1909 in Ironwood, the daughter of Margery and Daniel Kennedy. She is survived by two daughters, Margery and Bob Meyers of Eau Claire, WI, Maureen and Rick Genel of Columbus, OH; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arthur M. Kujansuu, 84, of Baraga, died on Jan 17, 2000. He was born on Jan. 31, 1915, in Chassell, a son of Alex and Riika (Autio) Kujansuu. Art married Gertrude (Kay) Erickson in 1941. He taught school in Painesdale, Pelkie and Baraga, wher he also served as basketball coach, High School Principal and Superintendent, retiring in 1974. He is survived by his wife; a son, Arthur and Helen of Baraga; two grandsons, Stephen of Hancock and Michael of East Lansing.

Sylvia E. Jokela Waatti, 84, of Pelkie, died on January 16th. She was born May 15, 1915, in Pelkie, a daughter of Samuel and Helvi (Toppari) Rajala. She married Sulo Jokela in 1933. Sulo died in 1984. She married John A. Waatti in 1990 and he preceded her in death in 1996. Waatti worked as a cook in the Pelkie School retiring in 1978. She is survived by two sons, Ralph and Maryann Jokela of Willow, AK and John and Shirley Jokela of Pelkie; five sisters, Tyne Nyland of Howell, MI, Ina Yon of Wakefield, Julia Ross of Baraga, Ellen Lein of Houghton, and Ruth and Ernie Beck of Marquette; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Sylvia E. Franz, 80, of Dollar Bay, died on January 15, 2000. She was born on January 11, 1920, in Dollar Bay, a daughter of Otto and Rose (Jackola) Lahikainen. In 1940, she married Herbert L. Franz. Sylvia is survived by her husband, Pastor Herb Franz of Dollar Bay; three sons, Pastor Dean and Leslie Franz of Dollar Bay, Rick and Debra of Glendale, AZ, Pastor Peter and Judy Franz of Cloquet, MN; 18 grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, Walfred Lahikainen of Marquette, Raymond and June Lahikainen of Houghton; two sisters, milma Scammell of Whitmore Lake, MI, and Miriam and Harold Kemppainen of Dollar Bay.

Henry Sparks, 91, of Calumet, died on January 15, 2000. He was born May 10, 1908, in Germany, a son of Stephen and Anna Sypykra. He is survived by four daughters, Katherine Chace of Mancelona, MI, Susan and Ival Hendricks of Kalcasca, MI, Jenet and George Rye of Pickford, MI, Elaine Spards of Millan, MI; three sons, George and Emiko of Williamston, MI, Arnold of Mancelona, MI, Phillip of Milan, MI; and five grandsons.

Ann Cappo O'Reilly, 86, of Marquette, passed away on January 14, 2000. She was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Baltic, a daughter of Caesar and Jennie (Mare) Cappo. She owned and operated the Fenton Hotel in Fenton with her husband Raymond, retiring in 1971. She is survived by three brothers, Rev. Msgr. Louis Cappo of Marquette, Caesar and Ruth Cappo of Flint, and Eugene and Carolyn Cappo of Lansing; an aunt, Mary Clonos of Kalamozoo.

Edan Othote, 102, of Calumet, died on January 15, 2000. Edna was born in Calumbt on January 12, 1898, a daughter of Edmund and Oliva Othote. She is survived by a sister, Evelyn Glesener of CA; and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Holliday, 89, of L'Anse died on January 12, 2000. She was born June 5, 1910, in Odanah, WI, a daughter of Henry and Rose (Denomie) Holliday. She is survived by several nieces, cousins and a nephew.

Impi E. Marttila, 86, of Liminga, died on January 13, 2000. She was born on March 13, 1913, a daughter of Andrew and maria (Ylitalo) Tikkanen. She married Arthur Marttila in 1935 and he died in 1981. Impi is survived by a daughter, Linda and Paul Paananen of Iron Mountain; two sons, Walter and Darlene of Calumet, Clarence and Joanne of Atlantic Mine; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Clarence LaChapelle, 94, of Houghton, died on January 13, 2000. He was born December 24, 1904, in Houghton, to Henry and Mary (Johnson) LaChapelle. He married Edna Archambeau in 1928. Edna died in 1958. In 1968, he married Adeline (Wagner) Gagnon. Clarence is survived by his wife, Adeline; a son, David and Rose of Milwaukee; five grandsons; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris and William Cox of Petosky.

Wilbert M. Somero, 80, of Hancock, died on January 12, 2000. He was born September 25, 1919, in Hancock, a son of Michael and Maria (Jaara) Somero. In 1940 he married Mildred L. Partanen in Arnheim. He worked as a tool and die maker and later, for the government as a guage inspector, retiring in 1969. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Maria Somero of Hancock, Nancy and Larry Korpi of Elo, and Patricia and Alan Kaczor of Imlay City, MI; a son, matthew Somero of Hancock; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilhart of Hancock; five sisters, Helen and Richard Shookman of Racine, WI, Pearl Rieck of Elk Rapids, MI, and Hester and Bernard Lampinen of Dunnigan, CA. Burial in the Keweenaw Bay Cemetery.

Amelia Landini, 92, of Laurium, died on January 11, 2000. She was born August 28, 1907, in Calumet, a daughter of Joseph and Emelia (Primeau) Landini. During WWII she served as a First Lieutenant nurse in the US Army's 298th General Hospital with tours of duty in England, France and Belgium. Amelia is survived by a sister, Sr. Mary Joachim "Veronica" Landini of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, a brother, Julius "Ralph" Landini of Redford, MI; and a sister in law, Maude Landini of Laurium.

Ellen E. Maki, 75, of Hancock, died on January 8, 2000. She was born Nov. 7, 1924, in Ahmeek, a daughter of Swante and Carolina (Rantala) Maki. She is survived by a sister, Edith Middleton of Tarzana, CA; seven children and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lucille Flourre, 79, formerly of Mason, died on January 10th, in Kingsford. She was born Lucille Odger on December 9, 1920, in Chassell. Her husband, Claude, passed away in 1966. Surviving are a son, Gerald and Mary Ann of Quinnesec; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Isabelle DeLisle of Lake Linden, and Dorothy Moilanen of Mason.

Leonard "Legga" Jarve, 78, of Calumet, passed away on January 11th. He was born August 26, 1921, in Calumet, a son of Bill and Hilda (Kaikkonen) Jarve. He married Eleanor Koivo in 1948, she died in 1964. He married Geraldine Swetich in 1966. Legga is survived by two sons, Kenny and Nancy of Philipsville, MI Danny and Debbie of Calumet; two step-sons, larry and Debi Swetich of Marquette, Gary and Judy Swetich of Swedetown; three borthers, Paul and Judy of Calumet, Andrew and Vicki of Betsy, Alex of Calumet; three sisters, Helen Pukema of Detroit, Ida and Roy Koski of Milwaukee, Linda and Frank Stubenrauch of Ahmeek; and seven grandchildren.

Toivo I. Palo, 94, of Laurium died on January 10, 2000. He was born Nov. 14, 1905, in Traprock, son of Matt and Hilma Palo. He married Mayme Muhonen in 1943, she passed away on January 8, 2000. He is survived by two sons, robert and Betty Bellaire of Brownstone, MI, David and Helen Palo of Escanaba; two daughters, Mary Ann and Donald St John of rockford, MI, Rebecca and George Regis of Tempe, AZ, 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Hilda E. Petaja, 87, of Calumet, died on January 9th. She was born May 19, 1912, to Harold and Ann (Maki) Makinen. She married Reino Petaja in 1940. Hilda is survived by two daughters, Kathy of Houghton, and Linda and Gary Moore of Jacksonville, IL; three sons, Paul and Mary Ann of Jensen Beach, FL, Vic and Della of Calumet, Bill and Marlene of Wolverine; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Dennis T. Martinac, 40, of L'Anse died on January 9, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in L'Anse on May 21, 1958, a son of Peter and Florence (Boyer) Martinac. Dennis was formerly employed by the K-Mart Corporation as a store director. He returned to L'Anse three years ago as owner and operator of Tony's Steak House in L'Anse. He married Kay Rogge in 1981. He is survived by his wife; a son, Thomas and a daughter, Jennifer, both at home. He is also survived by his mother; four brothers, Peter of L'Anse, Paul of Chassell, John of Grand Rapids, and George of Orlando, FL; four sisters, Judy Moughler of Clio, MI, Mary Dudo of L'Anse, Kathy Camp of Houghton Lake, and Barbara McKinney of Kalkaska.

Audrey Marie Quello, 68, of Calumet died on January 10, 2000, following complications of heart surgery. She was born May 1, 1931, in Calumet, a daughter of John and Jeanette Schmitt. She had worked for over 20 years for JC Penney in Calumet. She married Martin Quello in 1950. Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Marlene and Michael West of Calumet, Linda and Tim Porter of Calumet; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bernard and Gloria Schmitt of Hubbell, Joseph and Mabel Schmitt of Tamarack City, Melvin and Ann Schmitt of Tamarack City; and a sister, Jeanette and Edwin Wetelainen of Laurium.

Aili S. Tormala, 88, of Portage Entry, died on January 9, 2000. She was born August 19, 1911, in Hancock, a daughter of Frank and Sanni (Ojanpera) Isolampi. She married Aldrick C. Tormala in 1931, he died in 1958. She is survived by a daughter, Doreen and Lloyd Lockwood of Georgetown, TX; two sons, Alden and Kathleen of Florissant, MO, Kenneth and Susan of Williamston, MI; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Aune Uitti of Van Dyke, MI, Lili Tormala of Chassell, and Laila and Louis Hauswirth of Hancock.

Mayme E. Palo, 88, of Laurium died on January 8, 2000. She was born on May 8, 1911 in Ahmeek to John and Anna (Kangas) Muhonen. She married Toivo Palo in 1943. She is survived by two sons, Robert and Betty Bellaire of Brownstone, MI, David and Helen Palo of Escanaba; two daughters, Mary Ann and Donald St. John of rockford, MI, Rebecca and George Regis of Tempe, AZ; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Lillian I. Tanskanen, 83, died on January 8, 2000. Born on April 6, 1916, Lillian was the daughter of Toini and Snshelm Jarvi. She was born in Bergen, Norway. She came to the United States in 1916. Lillian is survived by a son, Uno and Esther Tanskanen of Ahmeek; four daughters, Juanita and Kenneth Fraki of Rabbit Bay, Florence and Joseph Stefonich of Copper City, Delores and Dennis Kinonen of Copper City, Della Pearce of Houghton; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchilcren; and a sister, Helen Condon of Clintonville, WI.

Katherine J. Thurner, 81, of Negaunee and formerly of Calumet, died January 7, 2000. Katherine was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Calumet, to Jacob and Katherine (Mishica) Zimmerman. She was a graduate of Calumet High School and St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1941. She is survived by her husband, Henry, whom she married in 1951; three daughters, Kathy and Steven Perucco of Negaunee, Mary and Richard Berryman of Ishpeming, and Elizabeth and Marc Nellist of Troy; a brother, Albert Zimmerman of Negaunee; and seven grandchildren.

Lillian Dorothy Gill, 91, of Calumet, died on Jan. 6th. She was born March 20, 1908, in Richmond, MI, a daughter of George and Bertha (Uppleger) Froh. She married Arthur Gill in 1938. Surviving are a son, Arthur and Nancy Gill of St. Clair, MI, a daughter, Mary Ann Gruver of Calumet; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Edwin Arthur Tapio, 81, of Chassell, died on January 6, 2000. He was born in Osceola Township, a son of Christian and Hilja (Verman) Tapio. In 1949, he married Gladys Pyle. Edwin was a past Commander of the VFW Post in Iron River and had served as past Michigan District 15 Commander. Surviving are his wife; a son, Glenn and Linda (Huhta) Tapio of Chassell; two daughters, Mary Ellen and Alan Davis of Lee's Summit, MO, Lois Sally Tapio-Maplesden of Elgin, IL; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Reino Tapio of Buckey, AZ.

Leona Kauppi, of Gay, died on January 5, 2000. She was born in Gay, a daughter of Charles and Helen (Lamberg) Kauppi on January 21, 1916. Surviving are a brother, Willard and Shirley Kauppi of Hancock, a sister, Lyla Plath of Niles, MI; 13 nephews and nieces.

James J. Grier, 80, of Houghton, died on January 5, 2000. He was born on May 28, 1919, in Eaton county, MI, a son of Paul and Velma (Edman) Grier. He married Pauline M. Thompson in 1943. Surviving are his wife; five daughters, Linda and David Rulison of Tapiola, Rosemary Grier and John Welch of Tapiola, Gloria and Bruce Griffith of Springfield, OR, Sandra and Mitch McGarvey of Howell, MI, Katie and paul Goudreault of River Falls, WI; 12 grandchildren; a brother, Edmand and Ruth Grier of Charlotte, MI; two sisters, Barbara and Joseph Nelson of Charlotte, MI, and Julia and Harold Weaver of Charlotte, MI.

Nellie R. Osterman, 95, of Baraga, died on January 4, 2000. She was born August 14, 1904, in Norwich, Ontario, Canada, a daughter of Archibald and Elizabeth (White) Palmer. She had been a registered nurse for many years working as the County Health Nurse from 1946 to 1966. She married James "Bill" Osterman in 1930. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Judith Osterman of Perkins, two grandchildren, Kari Osterman of Jacksonville, Fl, two great-grandsons; and a sister Jean and Harold Peeling of Brantford, Ontario, Canada.

John J. Hill, 67, of Skanee, died on January 3, 2000. He was born on March 13, 1932, in Ishpeming, the son of John N. and Aino (Olkkonen) Hill. He married Darlene Olson in 1955. John was retired from the US Government where he was a Mechanical Design Engineer at KI Sawyer. He is survived by his wife; a son, John and Michelle of Cottage Grove, MN; two brothers, Dr. Karl and Kathy Hill of Pelkie, Arthur of Santa Barbara, CA; two grandchildren, Kristen and Austin Hill; and an anut, Martha Wedlake of L'Anse.

Clyde Collins, 77, of Osceola, died on January 4, 1999. He was born in Calumet on Feb. 10, 1922, to ruth and William Collins. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen. Surviving are two sons, Keith and Kathy of Brighton, Richard of Fenton; two granddaughters, Jenelle and Nicole; two sisters, June Erlandson of Mohawk, and Ethel Wanhala of Calumet.

Aino H. Pyykkonen, 89, of Chassell, died on January 3, 2000. Aino was born on Sept. 14, 1910, a daughter of Mikael and Susanna (Pasula) Kolehmainen. She married Henry J. Pyykkonen in 1934, he died in 1989. Surviving are two sons, Louis and Nancy of Royal Oak, John of Chassell; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Aileen Britz.

Rita E. Sutinen, 84, of Calumet, died on January 2, 2000. She was born in Calumet, a daughter of John and Threasa Gray. She was married to Fred Sutinen who preceded her in death. Surviving are a brother, Frederick and Rose Gray of Detroit; sons, Robert and Carol and Michael and Cindy of Macomb County area; grandchildren, Dorothy, Matthew, Karen, Patricia; and four great-grandchildren.

Harold M. Ottowitz, 83, of Houghton, died on January 2, 2000. He was born June 9, 1916, in Hartford CN, to August and Teresia (Stangel) Ottowitz. Mr. Ottowitz was a retired employee of the Burroughs Corporation. In 1946 he married Taimie Isotalo. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Beth Heng of Merlin, OR, Linda Otto of Houghton; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Elma I. Nurmela, 89, of Watton, passed away on January 1, 2000. She was born on Drummond Island on Dec. 9, 1910, to Elias and Ida (Sikkila) Koskimaki. In 1934, she married Taud Nurmela, he died in 1987. She is survived by three daughters, Minerva and Norman Hovila of Menominee Falls, WI, Maria and Hap Elmblad of Mesa, Az, Linnea Vender of Sheridan, WY; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchidren; and a sister, Esther Lilley of Lake Worth, FL.

Ellen Kitti, 89, of Calumet, died on January 2, 2000. She was born on January 21, 1910, in Calumet, a daughter of Josepth and Alma (Wuokkila) Niemi. She had been a teacher at Negaunee Schools and various other schools in the UP. She married Reuben Kitti in 1937. Ellen also owned and operated the Columbia Laundry in Laurium for several years. Surviving is a brother, Irving and Beulah Niemi of Redford, MI.

Anna Somero, 84, of Newtown Location, passed away on January 1, 2000. She was born November 15, 1915, a daughter of Kristian and Maria (Perttula) Kotila. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph somero. Surviving are several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Burial in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock
