Eino R. Ryynanen, 88, of Houghton, died on January 31, 1999. He was born on June 5, 1910, in Centennial Heights, a son of the late Edward and Hilma Ryynanen. Eino was a baker by trade and was a former part owner of the old Star bakery in Hancock. He married the former Aili Heikkinen on April 20, 1935. Surviving are his wife; one son, roger of Sedar Bay; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Nathan Richard Isaacson, the infant son of Kevin and Colleen Isaacson of Boston Road Location passed away shortly after birth on January 29, 1999. Surviving are his parents, two sisters, Briana and marissa, two brothers, Colin and Logan, his maternal grandparents, Richard and Mary Ann Rosenlund, and his paternal grandmother, Verne Isaacson of Dollar Bay.

Martin Myllyoja, 59, of Dollar Bay, died on January 29, 1999. He was born on May 24, 1939, in Beacon Hill, a son of the late Hjalmer and Hilia Myllyoja. Martin had worked at Swift Hardware in Houghton for 18 years, and retired from Michigan Tech on September 30, 1998, as a storekeeper. He was married to the former Marlene Waara on May 14, 1960. Surviving are his wife, five sons, Dennis of Dollar Bay, Michael of Dollar Bay, Timothy of Burt Lake, Martin E at home; two grandchildren, Joseph and Kelly of Dollar Bay; six sisters, Helen Pyer of Hollywood, Fl, Miriam Schroof of Royal, Ruth Glasson of Houghton, Sylvia Goudge of Ashtabula, OH, Annette Hibler of Vero Beach, FL and Anita Massey of Oakland, Oregon; a brother Jack of Greenville, NC.

Jennie Inez Ahonen, 86, of Coburntown, died on January 28, 1999. She was born on January 24, 1913, a daughter of Henry and Erika Weijola. She is survived by a sister, Ellen Lahti of Bouse, AZ; a sister-in-law, Anna Weijola of Boston Location; a God Daughter and niece, Inez Horsma of Coburntown.

Dorothy Peterson, 68, of Nisula, passed away on January 29, 1999. She was the daughter of Homer and Myrtle Nichols, born December 20, 1930. She married Norman Peterson in 1975. She is survived by her husband, a daughter Ellen Vogt and grandchildren Amber and Brock of Dolittle, MO. Dorothy is also survived by three brother; William Vernon (Estelle)Nichols of mapleton, IL, Robert (LaVonnie)Nichols of Crestview, FL and James (Wanda) Nichols of Eldorado, IL; two sisters, Ede Reader of Alton, IL and Sandy (Church) Franklin of Louisville, KY.

Bernice Hirsch, 78, of Laurium, died on January 28, 1999. She was born in Florida Location on September 9, 1920, a daughter of Edward and Edith Carter. She married Matthew Hirsch on August 29, 1953. She is survived by a daughter, Judy (John Bernal)Hirch of Milwaukee and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Urho Samuel Hoiska, 85, of Mass City, died on January 27, 1999. He was born on October 13, 1913, a son of Samual and Wilhemina Hoiska. Urho served in the Army during World War II. He was employed by the Ontonagon Area Public Schools until his retirement in 1978.

Thomas E. Crosbie, 71, of South Range, died on January 27, 1999, at the Veterans Hospital in Woods, WI, where he had been a patient for the past day. he was born on February 25, 1927, in Sturgis, MI, a son of the late Dwight and Mary Crosbie. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the US Navy. On October 2, 1948, he married Edna Kahlia. Surviving are his wife, one son, Phillip of Sebring, FL; one daughter, Sandra Stodden of Butte, MT; two stepchldren; one sister, Lois Schuler of Sturgis, MI and seveal nieces and nephews.

Paul Bonneau, 66, of Painesdale, passed away on January 27, 1999. He was born on December 20, 1932, in Painesdale, a son to Arthur and Lillian Bonneau. On November 3, 1955, he married Ruth Jaasko. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955 in Germany. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Sherri,granddaughter, Catherine, and grandson, Michael all of Superior Road; and his mother Lillian.

Christine E. Wilson, 91, of Calumet, passed away on January 27, 1999. She was born on August 29, 1907, a daughter of Donald and Florance MacLeod. She married Robert F. Wilson who preceded her in death on March 25, 1977. Surviving is her son, Robert and several nieces and nephews.

Diane Outinen, 39, of Houghton, passed away on January 26, 1999. She was born on April 23, 1959, in Hancock, a daughter to John and Marian Outinen. She was a 1977 graduate of Houghton High School, and also graduated from Soumi College. She worked at Jim's Foodmart for ten years as a cashier, and for one year at Portage Health Senior Meals Program as a site manager at the Douglas House. On July 6, 1996, she married Jim Williams. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Jeffrey and Jordon at home; her father John of Houghton; and a sister Shirley Outinen of Calumet.

Antonia J. Stiglich, 85, of Phoenix, passed away on January 26, 1999. She was born in Ahmeek, a daughter of Louis and Genevieve Butkovich, on June 12, 1913. She married Myles Gregorich in 1947. Myles passed away in 1953. She married Thomas Stiglich on February 4, 1956. She is survived by her brothers, Alex of Copper City, and William of Calumet; and sister, Mary Pastilla of California. She is also survived by sons, Myles (Susan)Gregorich of Laurium, and Stephen (Sharon)Gregorich of Sault Ste. Marie; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

John Krause, 65, of Lake Linden, died on Monday, January 25, 1999, in colorado Springs, CO, following a several month illness. John was born on November 19, 1933, in Trimountain, a son of the late Bertha and John Krause. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the Navy. Surviving are two daughters, Gerrie (Donald)Osborne of Sault St. Marie, and JoAnn (Bryon)Ohlbrick of Colorado Springs; and five grandchildren.

Dorothy MacLean, of Houghton, passed away on January 26, 1999. She was born in Lake Linden, a daughter of the late Alexander and Frances MacLean. She is survived by a niece, Margaret Wiedman of Gig Harbor, WA; a sister-in-law, Blanche MacLean of Hancock; and by local friends. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.

Albert A. Oja, 81, of Mohawk, passed away on January 25, 1999. He was born on May 30, 1917, in Fulton, MI, son of William and Anna Oja. He was united in marrage to Elvi Seppanen on May 19, 1945. Albert worked for the Keweenaw County road Commission, retiring in 1980. Elvi died February 5, 1997. Surviving are one daughter, Candace and Gale Curtis of Copper City; one sister, Gerstie Mascagno of Laurium; three grandchildren, Roger and Kim Curtis of Calumet; Lori and Clayton Joyal of Genoa, IL, and Tracy Curtis of Copper City; and one great grandchild, Andrea Joyal.

Catherine (Hilgers) DesRochers, of Arnheim, died on Saturday, January 23, 1999. She was born on January 19, 1919, in Houghton, a daughter of John and Bertha (Bleise)Hilgers. She married Robert DesRochers on December 27, 1941. He preceeded her in death in 1965. Katie is survived by her children; Paul (Sue) of Keweenaw Bay, Michael (Lynn)of Negaunee, Roberta (Mike) Adamy of Bellwood, NE, Robert (Mary) of Baraga, Susie (Jim)Buckley of San Jose, CA, and James(Jean) of L'Anse; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters; Marie and Agnes Hilgers of Houghton, Helen DeRoche of Marquette, and Frances Massie of Baraga.

Larry George Pantti, 47, of Rockland, passed away unexpectedly on January 23, 1999. He was born on October 11, 1951, in Hancock, a son of George and Lorraine Pantti. He married Barbara Schmaus on August 10, 1974. He was an employee of Stone Container and a member of Local Union #354. He is survived by his wife, and sons, Kevin, Ryan, and Mark, all of Rockland. Also surviving are a brother, Jim and sisters, Laurie O'Connell, and Joan Wilber.

John L. Cocking, 79, of Rice Lake, died on January 23, 1999. He was born January 1, 1920, in Calumet, a son of the laate Julia and Thomas Cocking. John was a veteran, having served with the US Army during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He married Mary Stukel on November 26, 1942, in Calumet. Surviving are his wife; four sons, Thomas (Kathy)of Gainesville, FL, John (Mary)of Oak Creek, WI, James (Lulu) of San Antonio, TX, Joseph (Nancy)of Oak Creek, WI; five daughters, Mary(William)Sears of Wasilla, AK, Kathleen (Ibraham)Mandilawi of Albuquerque, NM, Jule Ann Smith of Waukesha, WI, Terry (Norman)Brehm of Pewaukee, WI, and Jennifer Cocking of Hancock, WI; 18 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Darryl Tahtinen, 48,of Baraga, was held Monday, January 25, 1999, at St. Ann's Catholic church in Baraga. Darryl died at the Baraga County Memorial Hospital on Saturday, January 23, 1999. Spring burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery.

Emily Terrill, 16, of Laurium, passed away on January 22, 1999, following an automobile accident. Emily was born on November 20, 1982, a daughter of David Terrill of Brighton and Beverly Terrill of Laurium. She attended the Copper Country Christian School and presently was a sophomore at Calumet High School. Surviving are her mother and father; her sister, Sally Maki of Laurium; her brothers, David and Michael Terrill of Laurium; her grandmother, Edna Aho of Hancock, and her grandfather, Russell Terrill of Houghton.

Jacob A. Johnson, 66, of Tamarack City, died on January 22, 1999, following an apparent heart attack. He was born in Oskar on February 10, 1932, a son of the late Harold and Fannie Johnson. In 1966 he married Evelyn Fountaine. He is survived by his wife, one son, Keith of Houghton and a brother Michael of Cadillac.

John G. Jackman, 67, of Calumet, died on January 23, 1999. He was born in Centennial Heights, MI, on August 12, 1931, the son of John and Edna Mae Jackman. He married Evelyn Ruottinen in 1950. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the US Air Force. Surviving are his wife, five sons, Don and Tracy of TN, John and Joyce of TN, Kevin of Wisconsin, Brian of Calumet, and Dean and Silvana of WI; four daughters, Kathleen and Richard Hiltunen of MN, Judy and Ronn Shappley of TN, Candy and Doug Goerdt of MN, and Julie Arp of WI; two brothers, Jim and Mary of Centenial Heights, and Jerry and Phyllis of East Jordon, MI; 29 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Veronica Store, 51, of White Pine, died unexpectedly on January 20, 1999, at her home in White Pine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM, Jan 23red at the St. Jude's Catholic Church in White Pine.

Helmuth Steinhilb, 81, of Painesdale, died on January 21, 1999. Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Monday, Jan. 25th , Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Hancock.

Catherine G. Laakso, 87, a former resident of Calumet living in Saginaw Michigan, passed away on January 21, 1999. The former Catherine Torreano was born on March 7, 1911, in Laurium, a daughter of the late John and Clara Torreano. She was united in marriage to Rupert Laakso on May 2, 1936, in Calumet and he preceded her in death in July of 1987. Surviving are two daughters, Carol Jilbert of Saginaw, and evely anderson of Saginaw; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a sister Winifred Werner of Milwaukee.

Ingri S. Immonen, 91, of Hancock, died on January 20, 1999. The former Ingri Pesonen was born on August 20, 1907, in Hancock, a daughter of the late Emil and Hilder Pesonen. Ingri was a former teacher at both the Chassell and Hancock schools. On December 24, 1932, she married Matt A Immonen, Jr, and he preceded her in death on August 19, 1982. Surviving are a son, Robert of Chassell; a daughter, Margaret McGregor of Victor, NY; seven grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Ann Rowell of Woodbury, CN.

Martha S. Goninan, 89, of Calumet, died on January 19, 1999, at the Wedow's Ladies' Home in Michigan City, IN. The former Martha Koski was born on September 18, 1909, in Calumet, a daughter of the late Amalia and Matheus Koski. She married William Goninan on August 22, 1936, and he passed away on January 19, 1991. Surviving are a daughter, Susan Halama of Michigan City; two grandchildren, Karen Hartsock of Michagan City and Gregory Halama of LaPorte, IN.

William J. Bennetts, 81, of Houghton, died on January 18, 1999. He was born in Houghton on July 1, 1917, a son of the late William, Sr. and Mae Bennets. He is survived by two cousins, Howard Vincent of Florida and Harold Vincent of California.

Jean Tomlinson, 80, of Lake Linden, passed away suddenly on January 14, 1999. A daughter of the late Charles and Flossie Marsy, she was born on August 16, 1918, in Jacobsville. Jean worked for the US Postal Service as Postmistress in Jacobsville from 1947 until the Post Office closed in 1965. She then worked at the Houghton Post Office until she retired in 1977. Jean is survived by a son Bruce (Ann Jarvi) and grandson Scott of Sterling Heights, and a son Bill of Troy.

Mamie Huhta, 86, of Jacobsville died on January 17, 1999. Mamie was born December 18, 1912, in Jacobsville, a daughter of Lina and David Narhe. She married Oscar Huhta in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1988. Surviving are a sister Alli Sjoblom of Ishpeming, and several nieces and nephews.

Gerhard Schulze, 74, of Toivola, died on January 8, 1999. He was born February 22, 1924, in altenburg, Germany, a son of Max and Anna Schulze. In 1946, he married Genevieve Turkiewicz in France. Surviving are four sons and seven daughters, Maxine Karry of Hancock, Anne St. Amour of chassell, Genevieve Schulze of Ironwood, Shirley Mussatti of Ramsey, MI, John of Green Bay, Gene, Marlene Dean, Michele Stewart, and Gerry all of Colorado, Danny of Arizona, Darlene of Bessmer, 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a brother, Heinze Schulze of Painesdale.

Anna Mae Bonen, 75, of Hubbell, passed away on January 16, 1999. Anna was born on October 30, 1923, in Butler, Penn, a daughter of the late Andrew and Sophie Zapatechne. Anna is survived by a son, Charles Bonen of Florida Location and three grandchildren.

Bernard (Bucko) LaBelle, 81, of L'Anse died January 18 1999. He was born on January 14, 1918, in Houghton, a son of the late Louis and Mamie LaBelle. On Sept. 2, 1950, he married Florence Mathes in Hancock. LaBelle was a retired fire truck driver for the village of L'Anse. He is survived by his wife and a daughter, Wanda Tessmer of White Pine. A Mass of Christian Burial Friday, Jan. 22nd, 11 AM, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in L'Anse.

Bernadine Joy Hakola, 51, of Greenland, died on January 14, 1999. She was born in Hancock on September 30, 1947, a daughter of Stanley and Eva Gregorich. She is survived by her children; a son, Raymond of Greenland, and three daughters, Renee Tarnowski of Mass City, Rachelle Bourdeau of Mass City and Ronda Hokans of Monroe, MI. Also surviving are her mother, Eva of Greenland; two brothers, Bernard Gregorich of Ontonagon, and Fred Gregorich of Greenland; and a sister, Debbie Laukka of Ontonagon.

Thelma M. Monson, 83, of L'Anse, died on January 14, 1999. She was born November 12, 1915, in Fond du Lac, WI., a daughter of the late William and Emily Gardner. She grew up in Fond du Lac and was a graduate of Goodrich High School. She enlisted in the WACS and served during World War II in the European Theatre. On January 21, 1954, she married Charles Monson in Dubuque, IA. They lived in Milwaukee for many years where she was employed as a statistical clerk by the Wisconsin State Employment Office. She retired in 1977 and then moved to L'Anse. Surviving are her husband, Chuck; a sister; Helen Faber of Fond du Lac; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jean Tomlinson, 80, of Lake Linden, died on January 14, 1999, at her home following an apparent heart attack.

Carl A. Pohjola, 81, of Calumet died on January 14, 1999, in Iron Mountain at the Veterans Hospital.

Matt A. Hyttinen, 72, of Liminga, passed away on January 14, 1999. He was born on August 7, 1926, a son of the late Eser and Kate Hyttinen, and resided for his entire lifetime in the Liminga District. On July 21, 1956, he was united in marriage to Florence Snell, she preceded him in death in 1985. Surviving are one daughter, MaryEllen Hyttinen of Dodgeville; one son, Roger of Kenosha, WI, and three grandchildren.

Raymond C. Bant, 81, of Eagle River, died on January 13, 1999. He was born on August 21, 1917, in Calumet, a son of the late John and Etta Bant. He married Verona Kline on July 5, 1941. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, bonnie Swenson of Urbana, IL; a son, Leslie of West Chicago, IL; four grandchildren; a brother, and four sistersss.

Mary L. Nimmo, 104, of L'Anse, died on January 13, 1999. She was born December 16, 1894, in Iron River, WI, a daughter of the late John and Martha Neil. In 1910, she married Harvy Nimmo in Duluth. She is survived by a daughter, June McKindles of Roscommon, MI; three grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren, and eighteen great-great-grandchildren.

Willace Lapert, 76, of Mohawk, passed away on January 13, 1999, of an apparent heart attack while shoveling shnow off his roof in Mohawk. Born October 29, 1922, in Mohawk, the son of Andrew and Jennie Lapert, he attended the local schools. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. He took part in the Normandy Invasion and served in North Africa and Holland. Wally worked for the Keweenaw County Road Commision for many years and also worked building the Calumet Radar Base. He is survived by his sister Ruth of Mohawk.

John Giacoletto, 81, of Toivola passed away on January 14, 1999.

Florence Pirkola, 83, of Tamarack Waterworks Road, Calumet, died, at her home, on January 13, 1999. Born, Florence Spehar on November 14, 1915, in Calumet, she was the daughter of the late Anna and Peter Spehar. She worked for Quality Foods and Fraki's Market as a meat wrapper for 29 years. She married Henry Pirkola on January 1, 1946, in Calumet, he passed away in 1960. Surviving are a daughter, Marsha Klein of Calumet; a son, Michael Klarich of Iron Mountain,; eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Lempi D. Sten, 93, of Painesdale, died on January 11, 1999. She was born on May 21, 1905, in Mass City, a daughter of Isaac and Maria Anttila. In 1929, she married Eino W. Sten in Detroit. He preceded her in death in 1990. Surviving are three sons, Howard of Houghton, Robert of Freda, Eldon of Painesdale; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother Ralph Anttila of Mass City; a sister, Evelyn Maki of Mass City; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dorothy R. Weaver, 81, of Liminga, passed away on January 12, 1999, after a battle with cancer. She was born on May 26, 1937, in Medford, MS. She graduated from Medford High School as valedictorian in 1954, and from Tufts College in 1958, summa cum laude and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She put in two years as an ensign in the Navy WAVES. A resident of the Copper Country since 1980, she worked for Michigan Tech for five years. She is survived by her brother, Arthur of Houghton Canal; four nieces; and several cousins.

Lydia Rantala, 82, of Mass City, died on January 11, 1999. Lydia was the daughter of Yalamer and Olga Keranen, born on April 29, 1915. She was married to the Wesley Rantala. They made their home in Nisula and Alston before moving to Mass City in 1982. She is survived by her husband; two sons, William of Alston, Fred of Ontonagon, and six grandchildren.

Nancy Wettberg, 66, of Elo died on January 10, 1999, at her home. She was born April 26, 1931, in Painesdale, a daughter of John and Ida Heikkila. In 1950 she married Bertel "Calvin" Wettberg in Detroit. He preceded her in death in 1992. She is survived by her mother; two sons, David of L'Anse, and Daniel of Elo, two daughters, Donna Sexton of Walled Lake, MI, and Denise Buckner of Wixom, MI.

William G. Myhren, 87, of Ontonagon, passed away on January 11, 1999, at his home. born on January 3, 1912, in Madison, WI, he was the son of Mons and Gastava Myhren. He is survived by a brother, Ray of Green, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Lya J. Klenke, 85, of Marquette, passed away on January 10, 1999. The former Kya Numinen was born on March 20, 1913, in Honkilahti, Finland. At age five, she immigrated to the U.S. with her parents, residing in Three Lakes, MI. Surviving are her children; James Ollila of Ironwood, Paul Ollila of Painesdale, Joanne Pierce of Villa Park, IL., and steven Klenke of Chicago.

Charles "Carl" Ryding, 78, of Calumet passed away on January 10, 1999. Carl was born in 1920, in Maynard, MS, a son of Charles and Saimi Rytinki. He served his country in the U.S Army special forces of America Division, in Gaudalcanal and New Caledonia offenses of World War II. He was commended by the War Department for support of the First Marine Division in the Solomon Islands and was honorably discharged a Disabled Veteran from harmon General Hospital in Longview, Texas. Surviving are four sons, Robert of Dallas, TX, Tom, Doug and Jeffrey, all of Calumet; and one daughter, Mary Zugel of White Pine.

Kenneth Kus, of Rice Lake died on January 11, 1999. He was born in Lake Linden on November 7, 1927, a son of the late Clarence and Mame Kus. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he served in the U.S. Army. Surviving are two brothers, Gordon of Bootjack, and Donald of Mt. Morris, MI; and one sister, Darlene Torkko of Thousand Oaks, CA.

Clarence Dolkey, 79, of Bumbletown, died on January 11, 1999. He was born on October 22, 1919, the son of William and Mayme Dolkey. Clarence was first married to Norma Sturos in 1957. Norma died in 1964. He then married Gertrude Kinnunen in 1969. Gertrude died in 1997. He was the Post Master in Allouez for twenty-eight years, retiring in 1954. Surviving are one nephew, William Dolkey of Detroit; and several cousins.

Martha Pastor, 88, of Ahmeek, passed away on January 8, 1999. She was born April 29, 1910, in Fulton Location. Martha married John Pastor in 1928 and the couple recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Martha is survived by her husband; her son, Jack Pastor of Lake Linden and three grandchildren.

Ethel M. Hall, 92, of Hancock, died on January 10, 1999. She was born on August 19, 1931, a daughter of Frederick and Mary Campbell. On November 12, 1953, she married Charles H. Hall. Ethel is survived by a sone, Charles of Denver, Co; one grandson, Jon Hall of Camp Pendleton, CA; and one granddaughter, Cheryl Hall of Lake Linden.

Warren A. Artley, 76, of L'Anse, died unexpectedly on January 9, 1999, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. He was born August 28, 1922 in L'Anse, a son of the late Rubert and Lillian Artley. On August 22, 1952, he married Nelly Newhouse in L'Anse. She preceded him in death in 1989. They lived in Lake Linden for 22 years, returning to L'Anse in 1978. He is survived by two sons, Scott Artley of Baraga and Niel Artley of Lake Linden; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a sister Norene Yohn of Elkhart, IN.

Marvin R. Stebbins, 87, Sidnaw, died on January 11, 1999. He was born on Sept. 27, 1911, in Escanaba, the son of Roy and Ada Stebbins. In 1938 he married the former Marian Longrie in Sidnaw. He is survived by his wife; four sons, marvin Jr. of Ruskin, FL, Douglas of Tempe, AZ and Bernard and Tommy, both of Sidnaw; and a daughter Peggy Ann Stebbins, also of Sidnaw.

Richard C. Campbell, 49, of Nisula, died at his home on January, 5, 1999. He was born March 26, 1949, in Detroit, the son of Robert and M. Beatrice Campbell. He was a graduate of Cass Technical HS in Detroit. He is survived by his daughters, Tamara of St. Clair Shores, and Tiffany of Harrison Township; his parents, Robert and Beatrice of Princetown, KY.
