Irving Miilu, 80, of Mass City, died on May 25, 1999.

Onnie J. Koski, 83, of Atlantic Mine, died on Tuesday, May 25, 1999. He was born November 17, 1915, in Alston, a son of the late Matt and Katherine (Kempainen)Koskie. He married Catherine Roehl in Detroit and she preceded him in death in 1960. Prior to his retirement, Onnie worked for 10 years as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Detroit. He is survived by a son, Wallace O. Koski of Atlantic Mine; two grandchildren, Tere and Tanya Thompson of Green Bay, WI; a brother, Elmer and Sylvia of Chassell; a sister-in-law, Selda Koski of Hancock, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Burial in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery.

John B. Jacker, 81, of Baraga, died on May 21, 1999. He was born on August 22, 1917 at Assinins, MI, a son of John and Catherine (Megizens) Jacker. He married Annabelle LaFernier in who preceded him in death in 1950. Surviving are a son, John of Gladston and Baraga; a daughter, Ina Ann Verling of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Burial in the Assinins Cemetery.

Aldea "Babe" Welch, 90, of Houghton, died on May 20, 1999. She was born Aldea Gauthier, on August 25, 1908, in Houghton. She marrie Fred Welch on December 1, 1945. She was employed at Dwyers Shoe Store in Houghton and later, she and her husband owned and operated the Horse Shoe Lunch in Houghton for over 30 years. Surviving are a sister; Margaret Meyer of Trail Creek, IN; and a brother, Rudolph Gauthier of Baraga.

Vincent (Peter) Marvar, 71, of Houghton, died on May 18, 1999. He was born on June 22, 1927, in Hancock. Surviving are three sisters, Mary Simonson of Denver, Josephine Engman of Dollar Bay, Eve Elwood of Denver; a brother, and Adam Marvar of Dollar Bay.

Edith Jenich, 81, of Laurium, died on May 19, 1999. She was born on May 3, 1918, in Laurium, a daughter of Louis and Rose Tinetti. She married John Jenich on July 10, 1943 in Calumet. She is survived by a son, Keith and Mary of Laurium; two daughters, Sue Rowe of Laurium and pat and Jim Vincent of White Bear Lake, MN; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Tinetti and Marjorie Tinette.

Reino Takala, 90, of Calumet, passed away on May 19, 1999. He was born on April 12, 1909, a son of John and Katri Takala. In 1932, he married Viena Niemi. He taught school in Illinois where he was the head of Hinsdale High School Math department for many years. From 1970 to 1974 he taught at the American International School of India. From 1976 to 1978 he taught methods of Mathematics with the Peace Corps in Winneba, Ghana in West Africa at the ATTC Teachers Training College. In 1959, REino was named "National Teacher of the Year" winning a trip to the Scandanavian countries. Surviving are his wife; a sister, Mrs. Ellie Clough of Ypsilanti; a son, Edward Warren and Debbie Latvatalo of Houston; and four grandchildren.

Anastasia Ruth (Tarbox) O'Connell, 85, of Hancock, died on May 18, 1999. She was born in Hancock on August 16, 1913, a daughter of William and Anne (Dooley)Tarbox. Anastasia was employed as a waitress at the Venice Cafe and at Gino's Restaurant in Hancock. She is survived by three sisters; mary Kramer of Lansing, Dorothy Vollwerth of Hancock and Corrine "Honey" Nordstrom of L'Anse.

Wilbert R. Johnson, 89, of Chassell, died on May 14, 1999. He was born on December 6, 1909, in Chassell, a son of Christian and Anna M. (Holappa) Johnson. Surviving are one son, Raymond of Chassell; a daughter, Sandra and Terry Lambert of Ishpeming; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Walter of Toledo, OH.

Eleanor Bates, 80, of Hurontown, died on May 14, 1999. She was born Eleanore Haas on July 4, 1918, in Trimountain. She married Carl Bates on February 29, 1936. He died in 1975. She is survived by two daughters, Roberta Smith of Lake Linden, and Judith and Dennis Anttila of Ontonagon; one sone, Arthur C. Bates of Hurontown; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Clarence J. "Turp" Frenette, 85, of Chassell, passed away on May 14, 1999. He was born in Hancock on September 7, 1913, a son of Rudolph and Christine (Casper)Frenette. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; three daughters, Mary Jo and Tom Peters of Bad Axe, MI, Margaret Marshall and Marilyn and Dave Bernard, both of Neenah, WI; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Burial in the Forest Hill Cemetery.

Beulah F. Levanan, 83, of Hancock, died on May 15, 1999. Beulah was born in Knox, WI, April 17, 1916, a daughter of the late Hemmie and Amelia (Berhow)Kaski. On April 29, 1939, she married Sulo Levanen, he preceded her in death on December 25, 1980. She is survived by five daughters, Lola and paul Ritola of Bettleground, WA, Grace and Ronald Juoppe of Hancock, Claire and Carl Wirtanen of Palmer, Alaska, Mary and Joseph Ovist of Atlantic Mine, Brenda and Mark Rosenlund of Dollar Bay; seven sons, Dennis and Carol of Yacolt, WA, John and Jane of Calumet, Mar of Battleground, WA, Steve and Annette of Hancock, Thomas and Shirley of Hancock, Paul and Karrie of of Kalispel, MT, Kurt and Cheryl of Battleground, WA; 87 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Burial in the Waasa Cemetery.

Mary M.(Sheehan) Tambellini, 82, of Calumet, passed away on May 14, 1999. She was born in Calumet on November 18, 1916, to Myrtle and Patrich Sheehan. Mary is survived by her sons, James and Judith of Calumet and Robert of Milwaukee; a granddaughter Mary and Jeff Foreman of Calumet, and three great-grandchildren.

Louis G. Chandonais, 84, of Lake Linden, died on May 13, 1999. He was born in Hubbell on April 20, 1915, a son of the late Louis and Georgianna (Hainault)Chandonais. In 1936, he married the former Margaret Krause. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Louis and Carol and David and Mary of Lake Linden; a daughter, Carol and Martin Dennis of Lake Linden; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Francis of Roseville, Lawrence and Irene of Hurley, and bernard of Hancock; and a sister, Mary Baccus of West Allis, WI.

Gladys M. Chagnon, 83, of Baraga, died on May 14, 1999. She was born May 12, 1916, in Westboro Township, WI, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs Cluade Lucia. She married Edward Chagnon, September 3, 1937. He died in 1989. Gladys worked for Wilkinson's Store for several years, and later for the Winkler Nursing Home for 28 years as an aide. Surviving are two sons, Roger of L'Anse and Calvin of Baraga; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Senia Sophia Hanka, 87, of Sault Ste Marie, died on May 10, 1999. She was born in Askel on April 13, 1906, a daughter of the late Andrew and Selma Heikkinen. Senia spent the majority of her life as a homemaker, raising her ten children and enjoying her grandchildren. She is survived by four sons, George and Robbie of Ocala, FL, gordon and Elvie of Brier, WA, Edsel and Ruth of Redford, MI and paul and JoAnn of Sough Lyons, MI; four daughters, Florence and Marvin Scott of Roseville, MI, Ruth Downs of Warren, Shirley and Ron Hudson and Nina Armstrong, both of Kincheloe,MI; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Fabian Johnson, 89, of Pelkie, passed away on May 11, 1999. He was born on February 25, 1910, a son of the late Emil and Liisa (Toppari)Johnson. Surviving are four brothers, Edward and Sylvia Johnson, Toivo Johnson and Wiljo Johnson, all of Pelkie, and Walter and Ruth Johnson of Baraga.

Andrew McCormick, 83, of Houghton, died on May 10, 1999. He was born on Septemer 15, 1915, in Calumet. Andy was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army as a mess sargeant with the 36th Division. In 1947, he moved to Houghton where he established Andy's Lunch and Teen Center on Shelden Ave, which he operated until 1965. He later owned Andy's Superette in Hurontown until his retirement.

John H. Strancel, 45, of Bergland died on May 10, 1999. He was born on September 19, 1953, to the late John Strancel Sr. and Lois Strancel Funke. He is survived by his mother and step father, robert Funke, of Ontonagon; his grandmother, Lydia Grant of Bergland; five sisters, Mary and Rick Osborn of Las Vegas, JoAnn and Jeff Hickey of South Bend, IN, Beth and Clint Weber of Bergland, Donna and Al Kananen of Paulding and Tammy Strancel of Ontonagon; and five step-brothers, two step-sisters.

Effie Tervo, 94, of Dover Location, died on May 9, 1999. Effie was born on December 23, 1904, in Laurium, a daughter of the late Ida and John Tervo. Surviving are three sisters, Edna Tervo of Apostolic Lutheran Home in Calumet, Viola and Frank Toth of Royal Oak, and Esther and Reuben Moilanen of Jackson, FL.

Arthur E. Kela, 79, of Boston Location, passed away on May 10, 1999. He was born on January 19, 1920, in Demmon, a son of the late Katie and Edward Kela. Surviving are his wife Arlene; four sons, Robert of Hancock, Steven of Houghton, Mark and Susan of Hancock, Scott and Cindy of Boston Location; two daughters, Cheryl Sorvala of Boston Location, Cindy and Walter Mytty of Houghton; and 13 grandchildren.

Wilbert Henry "Weep" Junttila, 79, of Calumet died on May 6, 1999. He was born on February 16, 1920, in Calumet, a son of Kustav and Lempi Junttila. He graduated from Michigan Tech in 1941, with a bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering and he played hockey at MTU. He married Virginia Peterson in 1945. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Karen and James Johnson of Calumet, Kristine and Roger Riutta of Ishpeming, Mary of Seattle, WA; three sons, James of Laurium, Daniel and Claudia and John and Sharon of Rymbaultown; a brother, Carl and Angie of Big Traverse Bay; and three sisters, Mildred and Arnold Heltunen of Calumet, Mabel and Robert Bohjanen of Marquette, Margaret and Edward Benda of Farmington Hills, MI.

Theodore E Palonen, 91, of Hancock, died on May 8, 1999. Ted was born on October 11, 1917, in Baltic, a son of the late Matt and Hilda (Stolberg) Palonen. He married Helene Saari in 1934. She died in 1991. In 1992, he married Agnes Schultz. Surviving are his wife, Agnes; a daughter, Mildred and Dale Spencer of Rockport, TX; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Edward H. Johnson, 83, of Calumet, died on May 8, 1999. He was born on March 18, 1916, in Michigamme, a son of Charles and Helma Johnson. He married Margaret Tiura in 1937, she died in 1963. He later married Doris Maki Jutila in 1985 and she died in 1995. He is survived by a son, Carl and Marlene Johnson of Little Betsy; three daughters, Estelle Rantanen, of Calumet, Lois Monville, of Hubbell, Louella Palonen of Chassell; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Fred and Ruth Johnson, of Copper City; and a sister, Margaret Staricha, of Detroit.

Christina Thomas, 85, of Calumet died on May 8, 1999. She was born in Calumet on November 19, 1913, a daughter of William and Amy Thomas. Christina worked as a waitress at the Miscowaubik Club in Calumbet for 34 years. She is survived by two brothers, Alfred and Jean Thomas of Hubbell and William and Kay Thomas of Belton.

Mary Blanche Stark, 81, of Baraga, died on May 7, 1999. She was born in Chicago on June 22, 1917, the daughter of Hermon and Alice (Duffy)Sumner. She graduated from Aquinas High School in Chicago in 1935, and received a Nursing degree from St. Vincent's Hospital in 1942, and her bachelor of science degree in biology from DePaul University in 1944. She married Ray W. Stark on March 2, 1946, in Chicago. Mary is survived by two sons, Paul (Anne) and Bill (Pat) of Baraga; a daughter, Mary (David)Sikorsky of High Point, NC; and a brother Hermon Sumner of San Diego, CA; she is also survived by eight grandsons; and two granddaughters.

Richard Toby Stipe, 71, of Houghton, died on May 7, 1999. He was born on June 3, 1929 in Vermillan, SD, and moved to Houghton at an early age. He was a graduate of Houghton High School, class of 1945, and Michigan Tech with a degree in Forestry. He was employed by the Isle Royale National Park and the Department of Conservation. He joined the staff of the Upper Peninsula Power Company in 1951, as an assistant forester at the Houghton Office. Surviving are his wife, Norma (Jacobson), two daughters, Susan and Bren LaForais of Marquette, Mary Kay and Steven Parks of Knoxville, TN; two sons, richard and Tammy Stipe of Negaunee, John and Tracey Stipe of Mud Lake; eight grandchildren; and a brother; James of Apache Junction, AZ.

Wilbert Junttial, 79, of Calumet, died on May 6, 1999, at his home.

Mary Bower, 82, of Sidnaw, died on May 7, 1999.

Marion A. Kotaniemi, 74, of Laurium died on May 7, 1999. She was born on November 19, 1924, in Tamarack Mills, a daughter of Victor and Sarah (Takala). She married RAy Kotaniemi on December 22, 1945. Surviving are her husband and a sister, Irene and Henry Somero of Laurium. Burial in the Lake View Cemetery.

Virginia R. Budreau, 63, of Baraga, died on May 4, 1999. She was born on January 19, 1936, in Dexter, MI, a daughter of the late Carl and Vianna (Jones) Davison. She is survived by a son, Larry "Bear" and Jackie of Baraga; a daughter, Carrie and Darin Sikkila of Nisula; two grandchildren; three sisters, Jeanettte and Rudy Avellino and Kathleen Carr, both of Brighton, and Rose Davison of Fowlerville.

James Dix, 62, of Laurium, passed away on May 6, 1999. He was born on July 2, 1936, in Houghton, a son of John and Eva Dix. He married Bonnie Carlson on June 15, 1963 in Ishpeming. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Barbara and John Skjerping of Eden Prairie, MN; a son Jeffery of Wixom, MI; three granddaughters; three brothers, Roy and Norma Dix of Castle, OK, robert and Delores of Greenland, Charles and Susan of Ishpeming; a sister, Kay and Harry Gillespie of St. Augustine, FL.

Elida Haapala, 81, of Houghton, died on May 5, 1999. She was born on July 16, 1917, in Atlantic Mine, a daughter of the late Jacob and Agnes (Niskey)Wanhatalo. In 1940, she married Oiva H. Haapala, he died in 1975. She is survived by a son, Arthur and Krystina of Chassell; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Edna Benny of Globe, AZ, and Mrs Selina Linna of Madison Heights.

Antonia C. "Toni" Ozanich, 88, of Calumet, passed away on May 6, 1999. She was born in Ahmeek on January 17, 1911, a daughter of Andrew and Margaret Brozovich. She married Edward Ozanich in 1938. He died in 1996. Surviving are a daughter, Carol Geshel of Calumet, a grandson, Robert, of Calumet; and a sister, Mary Kadjan of Tucson, AZ.

Robert Joseph Sliwa, of Copper City, died on May 5, 1999. He is survived by his wife Barbara; a son, robert and Doreen Sliwa; a step-daughter, Twila and William Apger; two step-sons, Gary and Heidi Harden and David and Marilyn Harden; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Henry A. Holombo, 90, a former resident of Boston Location and Chassell, died on May 3, 1999. He was born on July 2, 1908, in Hancock, a son of the late August and Maria (Olausen) Holombo. in 1930 he married Senia Kumpula. She died in 1989. Surviving are a son Donald and Judith Holombo of Chassell; 18 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leonard and Betty Holombo of Redford, MI; two sisterss, Julia Snellman of Palisades park, NJ; Mildred and All Benincasa of Englewood, NJ; a daughter-in-law, Rhoda Holombo of New Ipswich, NH. Burial in the Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet.

Carl P. Sutinen, 78, of Hancock, died on May 5, 1999. He was born on December 29, 1920, in South Range, a son of the late Frank P. and Flora E. (Silfven)Sutinen. Surviving are two sisters, June Kus of Hubbell, Kathryn and Harold Boback of Grand Rapids, MN; three brothers, John and Beatrice of Houghton, George of Calumet, and David of Huntsville, AL.

Amber Elizabeth Klann, 14, of Ripley, passed away on May 4, 1999, after a long illness. She was born on January 8, 1985, a daughter of Phyllis and Scott Carlborn. She is survived by her parents; a brother, Joshua Klann of Ripley; her grandmother, Hilma Clerihew of West Bloomfield, MI; her grandfather, David Carlborn of Ripley; several aunts and uncles.

Richard "Skip" McGinty, 69, of Houghton, died on May 4, 1999. He was born on November 20, 1929, in Greenland,. Surviving are a sister, Winnie McMahon of Franklon Mine; two nieces, Mary McMahon of Franklin Mine and Ann Wieler of Chassell; a nephew, Michael McMahon of Eagle River. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery.

George Stevens, 65, of Lake Linden, died on May 3, 1999. He was born in Lake Linden on june 29, 1933, a son of the late James and Gertrude (Martin)Stevens. In 1957, he married the former Arlene Bonifas in Isabella, MI. Surviving aare his wife; three sons, William and Gina of Hubbell, Thomas and Darcey of Kalamazoo, Mark and Susan of Rice Lake; a daughter, Sherry and Thomas of Hubbell; four grandchildren; two brothers, Robert and Marie of Lake Linden, James of Lake Linden; three sisters, Lorraine and Gerard Codere of Lake Linden, Betty and Eugene Allwin of Lake Linden, Joyce Stevens of Kalamazoo.

Gale John Gentilline, 68, of White Pine, died on May 1, 1999. He was born on January 22, 1931 in Iron Mountain. in 1955, he married Virginia M. Bal. He served in the US Navy fro 1950 to 1954. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; two sons, Floyd of Orlando, FL, and Joseph of White Pine; a daughter, Dawn and David Peloso of Silver City; two sisters, Fay Uren of Florence, WI and Jane and Eugene Bruno of Las Vegas; four granddaughers, and a great-grandson.

Aloysius R. Sever, 71, of Laurium, died on May 3, 1999. He was born in L'Anse on November 27, 1927, to Joseph and Rose Sever. he served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded the Silver Star for meritorious service. Al married the former Joyce Gleason in 1955. He is survived by his wife; sons, Allen Ayotte of Laurium and Steve Ayotte of Marquette, George and Joan Sever of Fulton, Edward and Terri Sever of Laurium; daughters, Debra and Larry Swetich of Marquette and janis Sever of Linden, MI; eleven grandchildren; brothers, George, Darrell, Ardell, and Kenneth; and sisters, Lillian Hainault, Charlotte Tyler, Leonore Gherna, Darlene Harris.

Theresa "Tracy" Vairo, 86, of Mohawk, died on May 2, 1999. She was born on April 12, 1913, in Mohawk, a daughter of John and Maria Vairo. She is survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.

Michael Stimac, 80, former Copper City businessman died on May 3, 1999, after an accidental fall from a roof. He was born on March 8, 1919 in Copper City, a son of Margaret and William Stimac. He is survived by a brother, Lawrence and Lorna Stimac of Hibbing, MN; two sisters, Frances and Leonard Nordstrom of Livonia, Margaret and Matt Jermaine of Kalamazoo; and nieces nephews and cousins.

Hilja "Celia" Haataja, 90, formerly of Woodland Location, passed away on May 2, 1999. She was born on April 30, 1909, in Boston Loaction, a daughter of John and Eva (Moilanen). Celia married John Albert Haataja in 1935. Surviving are two sons, John and Judy of Sedar Bay, Bruce and Ann of Traprock; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen and Robert Pieti of Dassel, MN, 23 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren. Interment in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.

Jeanne Ann Collins, 47, of Skanee, died on April 30, 1999. Burial will be in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery.

Mary Louise Burke, 95, of Iron Mountain, formerly of Lake Linden, died on Friday, April 30, 199, at Hyland Nursing Home. She was born March 6, 1904 in Iron Mountain, a daughter of the late Philip and Ursula Rahoi, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Louise Richardson of Richmond, VA; a brother, Walter Rahoi; and two grandsons.

Gill Kotila, 64, of Bruce Crossing, passed away on April 28, 1999. He was born on July 5, 1934 in Hancock to Benjamine and Marge (Chopp) Kotila. He is survived by three daughters; Janine Lindsey of Wakefield, Lynn of Ironwood and Chris (Bruce) Bowers of Bruce Crossing; his mother, Marge; five grandchildren; two brothers, Glen of the Copper Country and Gary of Livonia; three sisters; Evelyn, Diane and Kay.

Willain J. H. "Henry" Holman, 79, of Lake Linden, died unexpectedly on May 2, 1999, at his home. He was born on November 3, 1919, in Onnela, MI, a son of the late William and Jenny Holman. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. On November 30, 1940, he married the former Tyyne Wittaniemi. Henry had worked for the Corps of Engineers, and retired from the National Park service in 1980. Surviving are his wife, a son, Alfred (Joan) of Laurium, three daughters, Judy (Lee) Haltunen, Chris (Edward)Kramer, both of Lake Linden and TAmmy (Richard)Stipe of Negaunee; a brother Axel of Princess Point; three grandchildren, and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Frances K. Siem, 74, of Houghton, formerly of Ontonagon, died on Saturday, may 1, 1999, at her home. She was born January 20, 1925, in Wakefield, a daughter of the late Christ and Pauline Evanoff. In 1944, she married Chester Siem in Milwaukee. The couple formerly owned and operated the Candlelight Club in Ontonagon. Frances is survived by her husband; five sons and two daughters; Larry (Sheila) of Kearsarge; Ron of Ontonagon, Dennis (Christine) of Menominee, Corky of Big Rapids, Lori of Orange, CA, Lynn (Lonnie Walters of Ontonagon, Jim (Mary) of Woodbury, MN; five grandchildren, ; a brother, Ted (Mary Jane) Evanoff of Ontonagon.

Arthur A. Lepisto, 90, a former bootjack resident, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 1999,. He was born on November 21, 1908, in Greenland, a son of the late Josephine and John Lepisto. As a young boy he lived in Winona and later moved to the Houghton Canal. On December 12, 1931, he married the former Esther Tormala and moved to Calumet-Laurium area where he opened the first of what would become the Super Quality Food Markets. During his business career, he was the President fo the Super Quality Food Markets and the Superior Wholesale Company. He also owned Lakeland Petroleum Company and Lakeland Marine Sporting Goods, retiring from these endeavors in 1960. Surviving are two sons, George (Carol)of Bootjack, Russell (Sharon) also of Bootjack. Three daughters, Jean (Charles)Royal of Bloomington, IN, Carol (Joseph)Giachino of Bootjack, Sara (Dr. Francisco) Nunez of Marshfield, WI; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; a brother, Waino of Houghton; and a sister, Aileen Rautiola of Portage Entry.
