Bessie M. Raisanen, 72, of Ahmeek, died on August 8, 1999. Bessie was born on November 2, 1926 in Louisville, KY, a daughter of Omar and Bessie Triplee. She married Arthur Raisanen in 1945. She is survived by her husband, three sons, Arthur and Barbara of Tempee, AZ, Donald and Barbara of Arlington Heights, IL, John and Cheryl of Woodridge, IL; a daughter Janet Green of South Range; two grandaughters and two grandsons; a brother Omar and Lattie of Louisville, KY; three sisters, Wilma and William Walter of Louisville, virginia Sammarco of Norfolk, VA, Sarah Gyer of Indianapolis, ID; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Benedict Quinten Bonen, 69, of Tamarack City, passed away on August 7, 1999, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born on January 8, 1930 in Tamarack City, the seventh son of Henry and rose (Duchaime) Bonen. He married Dorothy Klein in 1961. He is survivev by his wife; four daughters, Mary and Sean O'Connell of Clinton Township, Diane Pokorny of Oakland, CA, Lori and William Barry Moreland, and Patricia and Terry Sidle of Citrus Heights, CA; three grandchildren; six brothers, Emery of Hubbell, Roy and Jeanne fo Baraga, Victor of Howell, James of Farmington Hills, Gerald of Laurium and Francis of White Pine. Arvi N. Wekmark, 82, of Hancock, passed away on August 5, 1999. He was born on December 10, 1916, in Hancock, a son of the late Matthew and Wilhelmina (Tasaen) Wekmark, and had resided for his entire lifetime in Hancock. Arvi had worked at the Smelter on the Houghton Canal Road, the ore boats which sailed the Great Lakes, and for Isle Royale National Park. He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Army. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Nina Hoganson, 84, of Laurium, passed away on August 6, 1999. She was born on March 1, 1915, in Florida Location, a daughter of Arthur and Olga (Jensen)Nichols. Nina married Allen Hoganson on April 20, 1935. Surviving are seven daughters, Carole and Hugh Sadberry of Glendale, AZ, Jeanne and Robert Sanders of Sarasota, FL, Kathlene Hoganson of Oceanside, CA, marion and Michael Gilles of Lake Linden, Lauren and Brian Maki of Royal Oak, Bonnie and Rodney Kelly of Tampa, FL, Donna Hoganson of Hancock; three sons, George and Darlene of Ogden, Utah, Larry and Jill of Marquette, and Pastor Timothy and Joann of Bahia, Salvadore, Brazil' 32 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Glenn and Ruth Nichols of Ira, MI, a special aunt Myrtle Nichols of Bloomfield, MI; and several nieces nephews and cousins. Charles W. Moilanen, 93, of Alston, died on August 14, 1999 at Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born on July 11, 1906, in Coburn Town in Houghton County, son of Charles and Hilma (Kemppainen) Moilanen. He is survived by four sisters, Martha Carlson of Palm Springs, FL, Marie Heath of San Antonio TX, Ann Steib of Fairfax, VA, and Elizabeth Morgan of Chandler, AZ; sister-in-law Sylvia Moilanen; stepson Edwin Miettinen of Los Angeles, and step daughter Jean Haikkuri of West Bloomfield, MI. Robert Reed, 49, of L'Anse died on August 14, 1999. He was born on July 26, 1950 in L'Anse, a son of Melvin and Grace (Stone) Reed. He was a 1969 graduate of L'Anse High School. He worked as a marine mechanic with his father at Reed Marine in Bovine and also worked at Clevelend Cliffs Inc as a mechanic for 25 years. He married the former Judy Bishop on July 8, 1972 and she preceded him in death on August 14, 1976. He married Cynthia Snyder in L'Anse. Surviving are a son, Jamie of Janesville, WI; two daughters Jenny and Krystal Reed of L'Anse; his mother, Grace Reed of L'Anse; two sisters, Sharon and Gerald Niemi of L'Anse, Barbara and Philip Nankervis of Ishpeming; one aunt, Ruth Ann Niemi of L'Anse and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Anthony Wright, 10, of Aura, died on August 12, 1999 following a lengthy illness. He was born on November 11, 1988, in Detroit. Surviving are his mother, Cynthia Bourton and step father, John Renehan of Aura. Raymond C. Herrala, 87, of L'Anse, died August 4, 1999. Burial in the L'Anse Evergreen Cemetery. Lempi E. Hosking, 83, a longtime resident of Hancock, died on August 3, 1999, in Manistique. She was born in Dodgeville on July 21, 1916, a daughter of Frank and Mary (Andun) Leiviska. On March 11, 1938, she married Raymond Hosking. She worked for the FW Woolworth Co. in Hancock for 18 years and was very supportive in her husbands active political career. Cecilia Chaput, 80, of Hubbell, passed away on August 1, 1999. She was born on September 24, 1918, in Hubbell, a daughter of Henry and Amelia St. Germain. She married Philip Chaput on June 6, 1959, he died in 1988. Surviving are a sister Gertrude Rossio of Troy; a nephew, Arthur and Claire Chuput of Hubbell; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Catherine L. Ongie, 87, of Lake Linden, died on August 1, 1999. She was born in Lake Linden on April 11, 1912, the daughter of Charles and Olive (Schwab) Ongie. She is survived by several cousins, including Dorthea Drouin of Lake Linden, with whom she made her home for 50 years. Wiljo "William" John Moilanen, 84, of Kiva, died on July 30, 1999. he was born on July 12, 1915, in Kiva to Aaro and Olga (Saarijarvi) Moilanen. He lived in Mass City for 40 years before retiring to the family farm in Kiva. He is survived by a daughter, JoAnn of Kiva; his adopted daughter, Sharon Trobridge of Trenary; three sons, Ronald and Sally of Rockland, Wayne of Madison, Wi, and Bruce of Adrian; a sister Taimi Strand of Portage, Ind, his former wife, Huldah; seven grandchildren; three step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. Norma J. Winberg, 70, of Hancock, died on July 30, 1999. She was bron in Hancock on October 6, 1928, the daughter of Arvid and Amy (Aronson) Winberg. Norma was employed by Detroit and Northern Bank and retired after 40 years of service. She is survived by two brothers; Arvid of Fond du Lac, Wi; and Jemes and Janice of Brookfield; four nieces; a nephew; a grandniece; a grand nephew; and by aunts, uncles and cousins. Martha Christina Anderson, 86, of Hubbell, died on July 30, 1999. She was born on December 21, 1912, in Negaunee, a daughter of Gabriel and Hilda (Hayrynen) Maki. In 1933, she married Waino R. Anderson, he died in 1983. Surviving are a sister, Marie Wisti of Toivola; a brother, niilo and Betty Maki of Toivola; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Barbara Penny, 93, of Hancock, died on August 1, 1999. She was born November 26, 1905, in Dumbarton, Scotland, a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Hunter) Lynch. In 1929, she married Tom Penny. Tom died in 1986. Surviving are a daughter; Gail and Norman Campbell of St. Claire Shores; two sons, Robert and Barbara of South Lyon, Mi, and Dale and Luanne of Toivola; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Burial in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range. Clarence E. LeVeque, passed away on July 28, 1999. Clarence was born on May 3, 1921, in Calumet, a son of Edmund and Rose LeVeque. He married Mary Filipovich in 1946 and the couple celebrated their Golden Anniversary in 1996. Clarence was a carpenter for over 40 years for Herman Gundlach, INC. He retired in 1986. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Dan and Rosemary of Calumet, joseph and Barb of Mercersburg, PN; a daughter, Mary Clare at home; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Zei of Calumet, Marie Rozich of Bay City; and a brother, Clayton and Maude of Tampa, FL. Bertha E. Merrill, 88, of Houghton, died on July 25, 1999. She was born on May 14, 1911, in Dollar Bay, a daughter of Emil and Edla (Gronlund) Sved. In 1946, she married Weldon A. Merrill. He died in 1967. Surviving are her daughter Mary and Michael Lowney of Houghton; three grandsons, Merrill and Tara of Foseau, MN, Michael and Pamela of South Range, Matthew and Merijo of Novi, six great-grandchildren, a brother Leo and Ann Sved of Dollar Bay; a sister, Gertrude and Joseph Gutmann of Silver Spring, Md; and numerous nieces and nephews. Paul N. Peterson, 82, of Tapiola, died on July 25, 1999. Paul was born on April 4, 1917, in Tapiola, the son of Tobias and Margaret (Savela) Peterson. He was a veteran, having served in the US Army between 1942 and 1945. He served in North Africa and Italy. Surviving are a son, Paul and Billy Sue of Tapiola; a daughter, Judy Brown of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Deborah J. Nankervis, 35, of Skanee, died on July 24, 1999, as a result of an automobile accident. She was born October 22, 1963, in L'Anse, a daughter of Clifford and Dorothy (LeRue) Nankervis. She worked as a cook at the Baraga County Memorial Hospital for 10 years. She is survived by her parents; a brother, Clifford and Pamela of Huron Bay; paternal grandmother, Gertrude Elmblad of Minn; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Victoria B. Krainatz, 78, of Calumet, died on July 23, 1999. She was born on August 30, 1920 in White Pine, a daughter of Jacob and Antonia Pintar. She worked at the Michigan House Hotel in Calumet. In 1943, she married Louis Krainatz, he died in 1997. Surviving is a brother Tony Pintar of Allouez; four sisters, Katherine and Pete Marconi, Betty Ridella, Beatrice and Ken Whittaker, and Antoinette and Charley Reeb. Also surviving is a daughter Tudi Koth; a son, Joseph Krainatz; and grandchildren. Louis Guili, 79, of Chassell, died on July 21, 1999. He was born on November 19, 1919, in Trimountain. Louie was employed by Copper Range Mining Compnay in Painesdale and later for the Hocking Constructions Company until his retirement. He married Rose Persha in 1941. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Louise and Thomas Colombe of Chassell; a son, Henry Guili of Marquette; four grandchildren and one great granddaughter. John E. Blau, 70, of Calumet, died on July 22, 1999. John was born on August 9, 1928 in Weehawken, NJ, a son of Carmelli and Edward Blau. In 1955, he married Kathleen Phillips in Hancock, she passed away in 1989. Surviving are three sons, John of Laurium, donald and Tammy of Calumet, Ronald and Michele of Chicago; two daughters, bonnie and Robert Allen of Calumet, Connie and Mike Paluda of Green Bay; nine grandchildren, and a brother, Edward and Marion of Younkers, NY. Clarence Codere, 73, of Lake Linden, died on July 22, 1999. He was born in Lake Linden on July 10, 1926, a son of Joseph and Beatrice Marcotte Codere. Clarence was employed by Calumet and Hecla, Inc; had worked for Jilbert Dairy in Calumet and in 1991, retired from Horner Flooring in Dollar Bay. He is survived by two brothers, Gerard and Lorraine and Willard and Gloria Codere, both of Lake Linden; a sister, Lorraine and Tony Kalcich of Lake Linden;a sister-in-law, Sue Codere of Lake Linden; one Aunt, Blanche Burger of Calumet. Brock A. Kipina, 22, of Copper City, died on July 21, 1999. He was born on October 26, 1976, in Cheboygan, MI, a son of Bonnie and Daniel Kepina. Surviving are his parents, ; two brothers, Jay and Kristen of Johnannesburg, MI, Justin of Marquette; paternal grandmother, Gladys Kipina of Calumet; maternal grandparents, Gwen and Elmer Haltunen of Copper City. Charles Nottle, 74, of Marquette died on July 19, 1999. He was born July 7, 1925, in Calumet, a son of Charles and Nina (Yoki) Nottle. He served in the US Army during WWII from 1944-1946 and fought as a Heavy Machine Gunner in Northern France, Ardenne and Rhinelander, receiving the purple heart. He married Donna Buck in 1949 and she died in 1996. Charlie retired in 1984 from the Marquette Branch Prison where he worked as a Corrections Officer for many years. Surviving are five children, Nina E. Parkkonen and Samuel C. and Debra Nottle, both of Marquette, Patricia and Bruce Olson of Farmington Hills, Linda and Blaine Olson and Glen and Sheri Nottle of Marquette and nine grandchildren. William T. "Bill" Carlton, 69, a summer resident fo Eagle Harbor, died on July 15, 1999, in Leesburg, FL. He married Carol LaBonte in 1951. He is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, William T. and Mart T. and Julie; grandson, Benjamin and Matthew;. Henry "Bud" Coppo, 87, of Red Jacket Shaft, died on July 15, 1999. He was born on November 29, 1911 in Calumet, a son of Martin and Eugina (Gabanna) Coppo. Bud was a veteran of the US Army, serving overseas in the Western Pacific during WWII. Surviving are a sister, Mary Murphy of Calumet; three brothers, Edward of Calumet, William and Deloris of Burton, MI, Francis and Lois of Grand Blanc, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lydia E. Korby, 87, of Allouez, passed away on July 14, 1999. She was born on June 25, 1912, in Bumbletown, a daughter of Matthew and Kaisa Kipina. She married Russell Korby in 1935. She is survived by a son, Russell and Elizabeth of St. Claire, MI; a daughter, Gail and Ken Cronk of Pine River, MN; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and on great-grandchild. Geraldine M. Juntunen, 79, of Baraga, died on July 13, 1999. She was born on July 8, 1920, in Baraga, a daughter of Ernest and Violet (LaBeau) Auge. Geraldine married Oiva Juntunen in 1969. Oiva passed away in 1981. Surviving are two daughters, Delores (Nicholas) Supanich of L'Anse and Roberta and James Sheldon of Baraga; five sisters, Mildred Wajokowski of Wilson, Melvinia Jaukkuri of Baraga, Frances Hall of Standish, mary Reeves of Muskegon, and Della Witte of DeLines, FL. She is also survived by 10 granddaughters; three grandsons; and 22 great-grandchildren. P. Edward Metteri, 74, of Chassell, died on July 13, 1999. He was born in Calumet on August 19, 1924, a son of Paul and Lempi (Kokko) Metteri. Surviving are a sister, Evelyn and Karl Hyypio of New Port Richey, FL; two nieces, one nephew, and several cousins. Melvin "Kato" Kauthen, 74, of Hubbell, passed away on July 12, 1999. He was born on August 29, 1924, in Garden, MI, a son of Raymond and Delia (Baker)Kauthen. In 1977, he married Jean Pykkonen. Kato worked for Interlake Steamship Company for 28 years, sailing the Great Lakes until his retirement in 1987. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Cindy and Robert Bennetts of Allouez, Kay and Scott Crouch of Lake Linden, Kym Rule of Laurium; three sons, Michael at home, Gregory and JoAnn Rule of Lake Linden, Robert and Shelly Rule of Hubbell; and his grandchildren. Douglas "Smitty" Smith, 74, of Dodgeville died on July 12, 1999. He was born August 13, 1924 in Assinins. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Army. He married Lucille Corbeil in 1947. She preceded him in death in 1992. Surviving are two daughters, Dolly and Dave Kupari of Buffalo, MN, Ginger Smith of Baraga; two sons, Randy and Marlee Smith of Buffalo, MN, Paul of Milwaukee; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a brother, Earl Smith of Houghton. Bertha (Maki) Huggins, 93, of Atlantic Mine, died on July 6, 1999. She was born on February 1, 1906, a daughter of Andrew and Mathilda (Michaelson)Maki. In 1926, she married Lawrence Y. Huggins. She is survived by a son, Michael and Debartha of Ocala, FL; two grandsons, M. Wayne and Wanda of Richmond VA, and Kevin and Vicky of Holland, PN; and eight great-grandchildren. Burial in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery. Gerald G. "Jerry" Schires, 68, of Ontonagon, died on July 12, 1999. He was born on March 14, 1931, in Detroit, the son George and Ina (Kaarto)Schires. He married Jean Anttila in 1952. He is survived by his wife, a son Captain Brian and Christine Schires of Fairfax, VA; three daughters, Karen and Randy Todd and Joy and Dino Scopellite of Phoenix, AZ, and Jerene and Steve Bramwell of Marchfield, MA; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother, Donald of Kaleva, MI; sister, Marie and Dennis Renneker of Bloomfield Hills. Sigrid E. Yrjana, 97, of Toivola, died on July 10, 1999, at Our Lady of Mercy Nursing Home in Hubbell. She was born April 23, 1902, in Lake Mine, MI, a daughter of John and Siina (Peterson) Honkavaara. She married Evert W. Kommes in 1920, he died in 1959. In 1962, she married Einard B. Yrjana in Hancock. Sigrid is survived by her husband, Einard, of the Covington Rest Home; three daughers, Verna Lehto of South Range, Linda Hayrynen of Toivola and Ruth and Sid Dugdale of Toivola; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold and Mae Honkavaara of Trimountain. Norman R. Kemppainen, 81, of Covington Rest Home, died on July 9, 1999. He was born December 29, 1917, in Baltic, a son of the late Jacob and Kaisa (Junkkari) Kemppainen. Burial in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range. Carolyn Ann Mantta, was born into eternal rest on July 10, 1999. She is survived by her parents, Robert and Elin (Karkkainen)Mantta and her brother, Matthew of Atlantic Mine; her maternal grandparents, Agnes and Arnold Karkkainen of Freda; and by aunts, uncles, and cousins. Vernon Havens, 75, of Calumet died on July 8, 1999. He was born on February 9, 1924, in Arkansas City, KS, a son of Samuel and Ada Bushan Havens. He married paula Moore in 1946, in El Paso, TX. Surviving are his wife and a daughter, Gloria and Roland McKinstry of Calumet. Internment in the Lake view Cemetery in Calumet. Shirley Binomaki, 66, of Florida Location, died on July 9, 1999. Shirley was born on April 2, 1933, in Laurium, a daughter of Margaret and William Kolb. In 1952, she married Robert Binomaki. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Dianne McMahon of Laurium; a son, Robert, Jr. at home; two grand-children, Jeffrey McMahon and Taylor McMahon; a sister, Mildred and Edwin Raisanen of Calumet. Lawrence J. Brouillette, 82,of Calumet passed away on July 9, 1999. He was born in 1917, in Lake Linden, a son of Antoinette and Lawrence Brouillette. He was a veteran, having served with the US Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. In 1944, he married the former Lillian Hoogana, she died Jan. 3, 1999. Surviving are two sons; David and Mary of Dollar Bay, and Don at home; five grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred and Caroline of Calumet, Donald G. and pat of Laurium; and a sister Ann Marie and Thomas Peters of Lake Linden. Johanna S. Ricchi, 93, of Hancock, died on July 9, 1999. She was born in the Crystal Falls area on April 20, 1906, a daughter of Frank and Anna Broskovetz. She married Bruno Ricchi in 1927. He died in 1988. She is survived by a son; Francis and Rits Ricchi of Atlantic Mine; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren;and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Ricchi of Hancock. Gerald P. Cadeau, 44, a former Alston resident died on July 7, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, FL, following a short illness. Gerald was born on March 31, 1955, in Hancock, and was a 1973 graduate of L'Anse High School. Gerald is survived by his parents, Edward and Elsie Cadeau of Alston; a brother, Patrick and Karen Miron of Greenville, OH; and a sister, Pearl and Hubert LeRue of Baraga. Burial in the Baraga Cemetery. Wallace Charles Jarvi, 76, of Houghton, died on June 26, 1999. Interment in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet. Marabelle "Muzzy" Hermann, 90, of Houghton, died on July 1, 1999, at her daughters in Gaylord. She was born on January 1, 1909, a daughter of Malvina (Demarios) and John Hermann. Muzzy was a teacher and began her career in 1929, and over her career, teaching in Gay, Copper City, Houghton and Chassell. She married Joseph Hermann in 1936. He died in 1995. Surviving are a daughter, Marilyn and Leo Petrison of Gaylord; two sons, John and Barbara Hermann of Munising, Harry and Carol Hermann of Houghton; six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Elsa G. Lytikainen, 88, of Baraga, died on July 2, 1999. She was born October 10, 1910, in Baraga, a daughter of John and Johannah (Sjoblom)Lytikainen. She was born on January 16, 1912, in Fulton, a daughter of the late John and Amanda (Toivola)Linna. In 1937, she married Lloyd A. Bastian in Calumet. Weldon Racine, 75, of Lake Linden, died on June 28, 1999. He was born on November 4, 1923, in Lake Linden, a son of Albert and Malvina (Hout) Racine. Elmer E. Ruonavaara, 70, of Jacobsville, died on June 29, 1999. He was born on March 19, 1929 in Hubbell, a son of the late Ruth and Richard Ruonavaara. Pizzi, 89, of Houghton, died at his home on June 29, 1999. He was born in the Quincy Hill area on November 27, 1909, a son of the late Caesar and Albertina (Quilici)Pizzi. in 1947, he married Bernice Bishop. She died in 1975. He is survived by a son, Robert and Jeannette Harrison Pizzi of San Francisco; two granddaughters, Daniel and Dominique Pizzi; three sisters, Chesarina Pizzi of Quincy, Dina Klein of Quincy, and Adele Nikula of Houghton. John R. Vertin, 83, of Calumet, died on June 27, 1999. John was a well-known Calumet businessman and longtime civic booster of the area. He was born February 18, 1916, in Calumet, a son of John and Catherine Vertin. John married the former Marie Julio in 1941. She preceded him in death in 1992. He is survived by a son, John Vertin, Jr. of Calumet; a daughter, Kathy Vertin of Stoughton, MS; a grandson, Matthew and Maria Vertin of Laurium; a great-grandson, Tyler Vertin; and a brother, Carl Vertin of Ironwood. Celia Dagmar (Maki) Sweeny, 96, of Marquette died on June 23, 1999. She was born in Fitchburg, MS to Martti and Emma Maki. She is survived by her daughter, Gail and Thomas Griffith; grandson Lindsay of Marquette; granddaughter, Leslie Griffith of Waltham, MS, and Laurin Griffith of Hamilton, Ontario; five great -grandchildren. She is also survived by a step daughter, Dorothy and Edward Lutz of San Antonio, TX. Her brother, Werner Maki of Port Charlotte, FL also survives. Clifford "Ray" Heikkinen, 79, of Laurium, died on June 26, 1999. He was born on March 30, 1920, in Osceola, a son of the late Mary and John Heikkinen. In 1942, he married the former Lillian B. Jaasko. Surviving are five sons, Paul of Laurium, John of Calumet, Michael of Calumet, Robert and Barbara of Ahmeek Location, Brian of L'Anse; two daughters, Judy and Gary Olson of Calumet, Kristine and Lee Gustafson of Mohawk; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lyle Heikkinen of Houghton, and Elma and Matt Musich of Tombstone, AZ. |
