In Memoriam
Deborah Jo Myrow Perlman
1951 - 2002
Dear God, please look after our beloved Debbie.
Welcome her in peace into your arms.
As her psalms have comforted many,
So help us to work through our grief.
Let Debbie’s strength make us strong
And let us honor her memory by our own deeds.
Please introduce her to the original psalmist, David,
As we remember her psalms and her words.
Her personal courage and the way she loved her family
Inspire us all to praise You and the works of Your hands.
Let Debbie’s words continue to help and guide us all,
And let her memory live forever in our hearts.

Original psalm from HealingPsalm.com
Debbie Perlman, whose health struggles led to her career as “America’s only full-time psalmist,” died Nov. 29 from the lingering after-effects of cancer treatment.
Mrs. Perlman, 51, was a weekly contributor to Jewish Renaissance Media’s Web site Jewish.com and many of her psalms of healing and inspiration can be read there.
Since 1996, Mrs. Perlman was resident psalmist at Beth Emet The Free Synagogue in Evanston, Ill. There, she wrote psalms of comfort and hope for congregants in need as well as words of joy in celebration of their milestones and simchot. Her book Flames to Heaven, New Psalms for Healing & Praise (Rad Publishers; $14), published in 1998, contains 160 songs of celebration, healing and questioning.
“I feel that when I write, the words are not mine alone, but somehow have Divine guidance,” she said.
“Many times it has been ‘too easy’; the words have been poured into me. They wake me and sing in my dreams. I feel humbled and honored by people who tell me they pray with my words, who point out a favorite psalm that is part of their daily affirmations.
“I don’t think I’m the next, or the only, but merely another in the line of psalmists who have found and continue to find songs to sing to God,” she said.
A month before she died, Mrs. Perlman was buoyed by hope that a new medication would alleviate her pulmonary hypertension. In one her final psalms, she wrote:
The intricacies of illness confront me,
Treatment consequences engender change;
My existence proves Your vigilance, Holy One,
You do not abandon me to despair.
You knew me when my body danced,
When my breath sustained constant song;
I have mourned these losses, I can smile at memory,
I still delineate my future.
You gentle me to adjustments,
A different bit between my teeth;
My struggles cease as You calm me to acceptance,
You give me rein to choose another gait.
There is luck in challenges, a mazel, a star,
Illumination formed of broken fragments;
You help me piece them in new constellations,
You light the purpose of my survival.
Mrs. Perlman is survived by her husband, Dr. Reid Perlman; and daughter and son-in-law, Eve-Gerri and Mario Pagliarulo.
Contributions in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice or to the Debbie Perlman Memorial Fund at Beth Emet The Free Synagogue, 1224 Dempster St., Evanston, IL 60202.
