LILLIAN E. RYAN
Lillian Earla Ryan, 96, of Royal Oak, formerly of Detroit, died Jan. 5, 1999 in Cambridge East Nursing Center, Madison Heights. She was born Oct. 27, 1902 in Jefferson County, Pa. She was pre-deceased by her husbands, Patrick Ryan in 1990 and Frank Root in 1946, and her daughter, Frances Bikelites, in 1992. Mrs. Ryan lived in Royal Oak for six years. She was employed in sales by Sam's Department Store in Detroit for 30 years and was a member of the Auxiliary of the Red Arrow, a division of the American Legion. Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy (Robert) Strehlke of Royal Oak; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were handled by William Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, Royal Oak; burial, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield; memorials, donor's choice.

ESTHER E. KALIS
Esther E. Kalis, 91, of Royal Oak, formerly a 23-year resident of Troy, died Jan. 7, 1999 in Georgian Bloomfield Nursing Home, Bloomfield Hills. She was born Oct. 22, 1907 in Detroit. Ms. Kalis was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and Faith Lutheran Church in Troy. Survivors include her niece, Arlene (Phillip) Hawarny of Royal Oak; great-nieces, Janet, Joyce (Bruce) Wilson and Cynthia; great-great-niece, Briana Wilson. Funeral arrangements were handled by Gramer Funeral Home, Clawson; memorials, Faith Lutheran Church.

JULIUS A. SMOLINSKI
Julius A. Smolinski, 78, a 44-year resident of Royal Oak, died Jan. 8, 1999 in William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. He was born March 4, 1920 in Hamtramck. Mr. Smolinski retired from the General Motors Tech Center in 1982 and he served with the U.S. Army in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Helen S. (Mistal); children, Stanley J. of Metamora and Catherine (Charles) Hughes of Dexter; three grandchildren; brothers, Harry of Presque Isle, Edwin (Elizabeth) of Sterling Heights, Bruno of Warren and the Rev. Father Clarence of Presque Isle. Funeral arrangements were handled by Gramer Funeral Home, Clawson; burial, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

SIGRID H. GARSIDE
Sigrid H. Garside, 82, of Clyde and Fremont, Ohio, formerly a Royal Oak resident from 1950-93, died Jan. 10, 1999 in Countryside Continuing Care Center, Fremont. She was born March 16, 1916 in Kearsarge. Her husband, Edward, is deceased. Mrs. Garside was employed by Parker Publications for 22 years. Survivors include her son, Peter G. (Linda) of Houston, Texas; siblings, Isaac Seppamaki of Bruce Crossing and Olga Horalek of Ewen; two grandchildren, Christopher Garside and Pamela Garside-Meyers; great-grandchildren, Allyson C. Penny-Garside and Joshua P. Garside-Meyers. Funeral arrangements were handled by William Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, Royal Oak; burial, Oakview Cemetery, Royal Oak; memorials, donor's choice.

BARBARA D. NOLAN
Barbara Dorothy Nolan, 80, a Royal Oak resident since 1949, formerly of Auburn Heights, died Jan. 10, 1999 in Evergreen Health and Living Center, Southfield. She was born Aug. 26, 1918 in Rochester. Mrs. Nolan retired from Avery-Hassler Insurance Co. in Clawson, where she worked as a secretary for many years. She was very active in her husband's and children's lives and she enjoyed playing bridge, cooking and baking. She volunteered as a room mother for her children at Guardian Angels School in Clawson. She also drove the nuns and priests to Adrian. Mrs. Nolan served as a Brownie and Scout leader when her children were young. She also cooked chili for the Clawson Knights of Columbus, was a charter member of the Bishop Foley Mom's Club, president of St. Bernadette's Guild at Guardian Angels, and was active in the Daughters of Isabella and Guardian Angels Altar Society. Survivors include her husband, Robert, whom she married Nov. 13, 1948; children, Sandi of Royal Oak, Debbie of East Lansing, Mike (Jennifer) of Saginaw and Cindy (Albert) of Farmington Hills; brothers, Grant "Joe" Serrell of Holly and Samuel J. Serrell of Elk Rapids; six grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were handled by Gramer Funeral Home, Clawson; burial, White Chapel Cemetery, Troy; memorials, American Lung Association.

THOMAS J. DOLF JR.
Thomas J. Dolf Jr., 46, of Royal Oak, formerly of New York, died Jan. 11, 1999 in Angela Hospice, Livonia. He was born June 12, 1952 in Hamilton, Ohio. Mr. Dolf worked as facilities department manager for the City of New York for the past 16 years. He graduated from Royal Oak Shrine High School in 1970 and Wayne State University. Survivors include his parents, Thomas J. (Alice) Dolf Sr. of Royal Oak; siblings, Jeffrey Dolf of Royal Oak, Susan (Thomas) Lanning of Watertown, Wis. and Mary Ellen (Greg) Leavey of Petaluma, Calif.; two nieces; one nephew. Funeral arrangements were handled by William Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, Royal Oak; burial, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield; memorials, Angela Hospice, Karmanos Cancer Institute or Shrine High School Library.

JOSEPHINE E. WHITE
Josephine E. White, 87, of Warren, formerly of Royal Oak for 25 years and Madison Heights, died Jan. 11, 1999 in William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. She was born April 30, 1911 in Detroit. Survivors include her husband, Lyndon L., whom she married Aug. 31, 1935 in Detroit, and her dear friend, Jane Marcum of Warren. Funeral arrangements were handled by Kinsey-Garrett Funeral Home, Royal Oak. A memorial service will be conducted at a future date.

LENORA McCORMICK STANTON
Lenora "Lynn" McCormick Stanton, 58, of Royal Oak, died Jan. 12, 1999 in William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. She was born April 18, 1940 in Detroit. Her husband, Howard, is deceased. Survivors include her brothers, John, Thomas, James and Phillip; sisters, Dolores LaChance, Laura Beaupied, Theresa Fairless and Alice Moakley; special friend, Joan Barbato; nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements were handled by Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, Clawson; memorials, American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.

HELEN J. JANBROERS
Helen J. Janbroers, 82, a Royal Oak resident since 1940, died Jan. 12, 1998 in William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. She was born Aug. 15, 1916 in Highland Park. Mrs. Jabroers retired after 40 years as Whittier Elementary School precinct election chairman. A long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Royal Oak, Mrs. Janbroers also was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a former Girl Scout leader. Among the survivors is her husband, Cornelius "Dutch" Janbroers. They were married Aug. 10, 1940 in Ferndale. Also surviving are her daughters, Jean E. (Arie A.) Van Der Graaf of Armada, Judith A. (John E.) Nisbett of Traverse City and Nancy S. (Richard J.) Lisabeth of Lathrup Village; grandchildren, Caryn (Patrick) Morrissey, Jon (Linda) Van Der Graaf, Mariah Nisbett and Lindsay Nisbett; great-grandchildren, Casey Jon Van Der Graaf and Paige Van Der Graaf. Funeral arrangements were handled by Kinsey-Garrett Funeral Home, Royal Oak; burial, Roseland Park Cemetery, Berkley; memorials, American Diabetes Association.

GAIL PORTER
Gail Porter, 95, a Royal Oak resident for 60 years, died Feb. 21, 1999 in Cambridge North Nursing Center, Clawson. She was born Nov. 23, 1903 in Battle Creek. Her husband, Harley, died in 1983. Mrs. Porter was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Durand and she was a member of the Royal Oak Garden Club. Survivors include her children, Winifred (Richard) Lowery of Royal Oak and Robert (Carole) Porter of Royal Oak; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were handled by William Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, Royal Oak; burial, White Chapel Cemetery, Troy; memorials, Royal Oak Garden Club or Odyssey Hospice Care, Novi.
