Thomas M. Teasel
age 57, died early Saturday morning, February 9, 2008 at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy. Tom was born January 14, 1951, to William & Mary Lou Teasel of Bloomfield Hills, MI. He graduated from Seaholm High School in Birmingham in 1969, and attended Oakland University for Mechanical Engineering. Tom married Judie Zoller, June 4, 1971 and enlisted in the United Stated Air Force in July 1971, as an Aeronautical Engineer. His first daughter, Jeannie was born in August 1972. He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1977. Tom & Judie had a second daughter, Susan in July 1977. They resided in Troy, MI where he worked for the Teasel family business as a salesman and traveled the world.
Between 1977 and 1982, he completed the Gunite Aqueduct through the Mountains supplying Mexico City with fresh water. Tom moved his family to Johannesburg, South Africa in 1982 where he started and ran a successful Gunite business for four years building in-ground Gunite pools, support walls in gold and diamond mines and security walls in Kruger National Park. He found his first beloved dog, Shadow, as a stray puppy while in Africa. In 1986, his “Shadow” accompanied him home to the United States.
Tom started and ran two successful businesses; Gun-Quip, Inc. and Inova Group, Inc. from 1986 to 1997. During those years he repaired the Zilwaukee Bridge with Gunite and built hurricane proof Gunite houses in the United States Virgin Islands. He worked with former President Jimmy Carter as a general contractor, building Gunite houses for the Liberty City Project in Miami Dade County, Florida for Habitat for Humanity, prior to hurricane Andrew. Tom invented the Patchmobile and the Hot Asphalt Process. In 1998 he joined In-Line Construction and merged Inova Group, Inc. into SJR Pavement Repair, Inc. of Warren, MI, where he contracted road repair with 32 Michigan cities and Michigan Department of Transportation for Michigan Interstates.
His second beloved dog, Hershey, joined the Teasel family in 1998 and was Tom’s constant companion. In 1999, he was filled with pride as he walked Susan down the isle to marry John Mingay and 61 days later he walked Jeannie down the isle to marry Mark Meek. Over the following seven years he became the most proud grandfather to; Nathan Meek in 2002, Jack Mingay in 2003, Kaitlyn Meek in 2004 and finally, Charlotte Mingay in 2006. His grandkids were the light of his life and brought him daily joy.
After remodeling and building many homes through the years in 2004 Tom & Judie purchased property on Cutting Drive in Troy, MI right between his daughter’s homes. There he began designing and building their dream home, with his curious grandsons watching out their bedroom windows! With the help of his son-in-laws and working night and day they completed their new home in one year and one week, officially moving in March 2006.
During the past two years Tom thoroughly enjoyed watching his beloved grandchildren growing. Tom’s life passion was his cars! Over his 57 years he loved to build, race and drive many Fast Fords! This was a hobby that he shared with both of his son-in-laws and life long friends and family.
Tom loved many things; his daughters and son-in-laws, grandchildren, dogs, cars, good food, hard work and life… but most of all the love of his life was his wife, Judie. Over their 36 years of marriage Tom & Judie enjoyed many things together; Cruising Woodward Avenue, reading, watching War movies and mostly family times. There were vacations around the world but their favorite get away was to Walt Disney World in Florida, most recently in October 2007.
Most of all Tom Teasel was a stubborn, hardworking man who took care of everyone. He had a fiery temper but an equally Huge Heart! He was loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Judie; loving daughters, Jeannie (Mark) Meek and Susan (John) Mingay; grandchildren, Nathan, Jack, Kaitlyn and Charlotte and mother-in-law, Jeanne Zoller.
