Margaret "Peggy" Egan
Peggy Egan, age 81, died April 6, 2005 at Botsford Continuing Care, in Farmington Hills, Peggy Egan was a long-time resident of Clawson. Peggy was born on October 26, 1923 in Kinloch, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. She was named Margaret Ellen Veronica Devlin. She joined siblings Kathleen, Frank, Maura, and Paddy. Her father, Paddy, moved to the United States to find work when she was an infant. She was raised on a farm, and her grandparents owned prize apple orchards. Peggy moved to England for work in 1943. She often talked about her experiences in London during World War II. It was there that she met her future husband, Patrick Joseph (PJ) Egan. They immigrated to the United States in 1948, arriving in New York City. PJ was unable to find employment there, so they continued on to Detroit, where Peggy's father found him a job. They were married on February 5, 1949. At first, Peggy worked as a sales clerk at Hudson's Department store, and then worked as a book keeper and key punch operator in an office. She spent a month in Ireland and England visiting family every two years until her mother died in 1973. Peggy has always been creative - she used to make all her own clothing, and had knitting and crocheting projects going much of the time. After she quit work, she was very generous with her time. She took her "little old ladies" from nursing homes to church and to doctor's appointments. She said she never knew she would have such a good time with her "little old ladies." Animals have always been a special love of Peggy's, especially dogs. PJ and Peggy always had a dog, and many times, more than one. PJ would use the dogs for hunting, and Peggy would give them all her love and attention at home. She says she doesn't care for cats, but "she could get used to them." PJ died after a short illness in October, 2003, precipitating many changes in her life. She is close to her sister-in-law and her many nieces and nephews, here in America, as well as Canada, Ireland, England, and Australia.
