Richard Waldo Baker, "Dick"
was born October 2, 1917 to Earl W. and Bertha Duncan Baker. He is descended from one of the earliest Highland Township settlers, Rev. Thomas Baker, whose family settled in the township in 1837. Dick was the oldest of four boys; his brothers were William, Robert and Jackson. Known as the Baker boys, Dick would lead his younger brothers on many exciting adventures in and around Clyde, where they grew up. Dick continued to love fishing, camping, and hunting his entire life. He deer hunted every year except this year. Dick graduated from Milford High School in 1935. He was recruited to play baseball for Michigan and Michigan State, but it was the depression, and he had the opportunity to work and play baseball for General Motors Truck and Coach; so that is what he decided to do. Richard courted the lovely Margaret Maxine Coulter of Milford, and married her on November 23, 1938. After serving in World War II from 1943-1946, he returned to work and his baseball team won the National Championship in 1947. His career with GMTC lasted thirty-nine years. He retired in 1974 and enjoyed thirty great retirement years. Dick and Margaret had three children: Bette Jane, Judith Ann and Gary Duncan. They lived in the house that Dick built at 520 E. Liberty after WWII, next to the First Street house where Margaret was born. Handsome, strong and fit, Dick always enjoyed entertaining his friends with great stories and jokes. He loved his poker club and playing cards with his friends. He loved to travel and take cruises. He loved to golf with his friends, and he golfed in many places including Scotland. He won his club championship in Florida in 2003. He was 85 years old playing against many younger men. He was very proud of that trophy! He is survived by his loving family: children Bette (Keith) Johnson Judy (Roger) Clemens and Gary (Pam) Baker; grandchildren Matthew (Gretchen) Clemens Christopher (Laura) Clemens Heather (Aaron) Soto Hannah and Haley Baker; great-grandchildren Blake, Breylin and Bryson Soto, Alexander and Noah Clemens and two babies due in May; brothers Jack (Virginia) Baker and William Baker; sister-in-law Margaret Porter Baker; dear friends Margaret Schultz, Arvale Tipper and Myrtle Abel; and also leaves many extended family members and wonderful friends.
