IRENE EINHORN, A 'Can-Do' Mom:
Irene Einhorn's family could only describe her as "dynamic."
A teacher, tennis player and coach, Mrs. Einhorn was as handy with a hammer as she was with a computer.
"There wasn't one thing that she wasn't capable of doing," said sister-in-law and business partner Fran Wolf, who renovated a rental house in Royal Oak with her.
"If she didn't understand how to do something, she would go to the extreme of learning in detail how to go about it," Wolf said. "When we had to tile the floor, she went to classes, went to the stores, asked questions, read about it, did everything until she perfected it.
"And she really instilled that in her children. Her motto was there's no such thing as you 'can't do' something -- if you want to do it, you do it."
Mrs. Einhorn, of West Bloomfield, died May 28 at age 59. She had been under treatment for lymphoma.
Born in Bedzin, Poland in 1942, the young Irene survived World War II as a "hidden child," sheltered by a Polish family until her father, Barrish Frederick, was liberated from Auschwitz. He had been shot escaping from a transport train leaving the Bedzin ghetto, but managed to arrange for Irene's safety before being recaptured. Her mother, Sora Leah Frederick, perished in the Holocaust.
The gentile woman who hid Irene, Honorata Skowronska, was later honored as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, the Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority in Israel.
When the 4-year-old Irene and her father were reunited after the war, it meant being taken from the familiar environment she felt secure in.
"Maybe her childhood made her the strong woman that she was," said her sister-in-law.
The young Irene spent a few years in Sweden before immigrating to the United States with her father and his new wife, Fela. After graduating Oak Park High and Wayne State University, she taught middle school in Detroit. Earning a master's degree in guidance and counseling from WSU, she worked for the Michigan Employment Security Commission, but left to raise her children, Derek and Erin.
"She was an inventive, imaginative perfectionist, who took great pride in everything she did," said her husband of 32 years, Brian. "Her first priority was to care for her children."
Son Derek, a physician, is a medical-pediatrics resident at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Daughter Erin is a journalist in Philadelphia, who took a year's leave to research her mother's history in Poland. Erin had been in Poland three weeks before her mother's death and met with descendants of the family that sheltered her.
After her children were grown, Mrs. Einhorn earned a master's from WSU in business education and worked as an adult education teacher in computers and business. Forever active, Mrs. Einhorn was a ranked adult tennis player in Michigan and coached tennis at West Bloomfield High School for eight years, 1985-1992.
"Tennis was a major focus of her life," said Erin. "She was a tennis parent through and through -- at every game."
Mrs. Einhorn is survived by her husband, Brian; son, Derek; daughter, Erin; mother, Fela Frederick; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Harold and Patricia Frederick and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Fran and Robert Wolf.
She was the beloved daughter of the late Barrish Frederick and the late Sora Leah Frederick.
Interment was at Adat Shalom Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the Karmanos Cancer Institute, 18831 W. 12 Mile Road, Lathrup Village, MI 48076. Arrangements by Ira Kaufman Chapel.
