JILL HOOBERMAN, Strength And Gentleness:
After learning that her liver cancer was incurable, 30-year-old Jill Hooberman wrote poignant letters to family members, including one to her infant niece, Lily.
"I have seen you every day," she wrote. "We have taken tons of pictures and videos so that you will always know me. When you see the videos, I'm talking to you like you're a baby ('cause you are right now). I do talk normally!"
Signed, "Love, Auntie Jill."
Lily will grow up and will know her aunt's love through the letter and videos. Jill Hooberman died March 31, 2001 in her parents' Franklin home.
"She was a doer," said her brother, Jimmy Hooberman of West Bloomfield. "She lived life to its fullest. She wanted to be good at everything she did and to succeed in life, and she did." Jill grew up in Southfield and was on the swim team at Southfield-Lathrup High. She followed her sociology degree from the University of Wisconsin with a year in Portugal, teaching English to businesspeople.
She spent the next eight years in Chicago, pursuing a corporate career. She worked most recently as a project manager for Levy Restaurant Corp., supervising restaurant renovations. At night, she attended Loyola University and in July received her master's in business administration.
She was also a volunteer with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and a kosher food bank. "Jill had this intense love of life," said Rabbi Irwin Groner of Congregation Shaarey Zedek at her funeral. "She had an eagerness for living, for people, for achievement, for laughter.
"She had a remarkable combination of strength and gentleness ... She would not yield to pain, she would not succumb to the burden of illness. When I spoke to her, I did not hear anger, I did not hear despondency, because she was a life-affirming person. She would not allow the days of her life to be darkened by sickness and despair."
Rabbi Groner read a letter Jill wrote for the funeral, thanking those who had given her happiness in life.
On Feb. 12, Jill appeared in a video "Letter to Oprah" on the Oprah Winfrey Show to thank the Trillium Spa in Birmingham for providing massages during her final months. Owner Phyllis LaPrairie and masseuse Amy Mastrangel treated Jill three times a week, coming to her home in the latter stages of her illness.
"As a 30-year-old woman facing this out of the blue, you can't imagine what it's like," Jill told Oprah.
"Cancer and death is in my head 24 hours a day. You're constantly saying your goodbyes to people, you're desperately trying to find a cure and you're trying to spend quality time with people that you love. It's just a really horrible thing." But after a massage, Jill said, "I felt like a new person ... it restored my spirit."
Said her brother, "Jill made tons of friends. She was a great friend to others, and they, in turn, back to her. She was a warm, wonderful, kind, caring, special person."
Jill Hooberman is survived by her parents, Paul and Carol Hooberman of Franklin; brother and sister-in-law Jimmy and Sally Hooberman of West Bloomfield; niece Lily Shayna Hooberman and grandparents Sam and Bette Hooberman of Southfield.
She was the loving granddaughter of the late Sadie and the late Abraham Ernstein.
Interment was at Clover Hill Park Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Gilda's Club Metro Detroit, attn: Jill Hooberman Spa Day Fund, 3517 Rochester Road, Royal Oak, MI 48073; Hospice of Michigan, 16250 Northland Drive, Southfield, MI 48075; or to a charity of one's choice.
