BETTY L. SLATER
Mrs. Betty L. Slater of Vassar, died Thursday, June 28, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. She was 73 years of age.
Mrs. Slater was born September 21, 1927 in Vassar, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton and Gladys (Wagner) Grainger. She and Zenis Slater were united in marriage May 8, 1948. He preceded her in death January 13, 1996.
Surviving are three children, Charles and wife Debra Slater of Vassar, Kristine and husband Randy Vincent of Vassar, Douglas Slater of Bradenton, Florida; five grandchildren, Danielle Slater, Corey Slater, Jeff McCrandall, Jason Vincent, Kylie Vincent; sister, Bonnie and husband Gene Seney of Vassar; and special friend, Delores Oprea.
A grave side committal service was held Saturday, June 30, 2001 at Tuscola Township Cemetery. Reverend Cyril Haines officiated.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, Emphysema Association of the donor's choice.
Arrangements were in the care of Martin Funeral Home, Clark Chapel, Vassar.
LILLIAN M. (GERMAIN) CYR
Mrs. Lillian M. (Germain) Cyr of Vassar, died Saturday, June 23, 2001 while at the Saginaw Health Source. She was 96 years of age.
Mrs. Cyr was born April 25, 1905, the daughter of Elmer and Mary (Beers) Ennest, and was a Vassar resident her entire life. She was also an active member of the First Baptist Church of Vassar.
On March 24, 1924 she married Harry Germain. He preceded her in death in January of 1974. She later married Cecil Cyr on November 18, 1977. He also preceded her in death in January of 1984.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Harry and Maxine Germain Jr., Clinton and Onalee Germain, all of Vassar; stepdaughter, Betty Cyr of St. Helen; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 13 great great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Violet, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at the Chapel Hill Assembly of God in Vassar with burial following at the Millington Township Cemetery in Millington. Pastor Wally Reames officiated.

Arrangements were in the care of Hanlin Chapel for Funerals, Vassar.
MEREDITH M. CANDELA
Mrs. Meredith M. Candela of Otter Lake, died Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at the Lapeer Regional Medical Center. She was 79 years of age.
Mrs. Candela was born on January 16, 1922 in Fostoria, the daughter of Alfred and Lettie (Mastin) Lumley. In 1940 she married Joseph Candela. He preceded her in death in July of 1988. She was a member of the Otter Lake United Methodist Church, involved with the Otter Lake Literary Club, the United Methodist Women's Organization, loved to sew and make crafts, and some of her favorite works were published.
Surviving is her family, sons and their wives, Vincent and Janice Candela of Kalamazoo, Joseph and Jill Candela, Jr. of Millington; four grandsons, Kevin, Christopher, Joseph, James; one brother, Don Lumley of Millington and Florida; two sisters, Marvel Cremer of Fostoria, Pearl Peabody of West Branch; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Lawrence and three sisters, Leila, Irene and Cleo.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 1, 2001 at the Otter Lake Methodist Church with Pastor Dorothy Rossman officiating. Burial followed at the Otter Lake Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Otter Lake Methodist Church.
Arrangements were in the care of Hanlin Funeral Home, Millington.
WAYNE H. DUNCAN
Mr. Wayne H. Duncan of Millington, died Saturday, December 1, 2001 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw. He was 67 years of age.
Mr. Duncan was born October 5, 1934 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, the son of Montgomery W. and Mable May (Curtis) Duncan. On April 9, 1977 he married Darlene Kern and together they celebrated 24 years of marriage. She survives him. He had been employed as a machine operator for Vassar Manufacturing. He was a veteran serving with the U.S. Air Force.
Surviving is his family, wife, Darlene; nine children, Dean Kinnanman, Wayne Jr., Joseph Ward, Barbara Jean Larson, Laura May Kern, Sara Renee Warren, Robert Ray Kern, JoAnna Marie Jensen, Michael James; 17 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Opal Davis of Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald LeRoy.
At his request, cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements were in care of Hanlin Funeral Home of Millington.
MARJORIE N. OPPERMAN
Mrs. Marjorie N. (Marge) Opperman of Vassar, died Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at her home. She was 74 years of age.
Marjorie Norene Scribner was born February 4, 1927 in Berville, Michigan, the daughter of Cecil and Ivah (White) Scribner. She was a graduate of Vassar High School Class of 1944, at the top of her class.
She was married to Ronald D. Opperman November 8, 1946 at the Vassar United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death January 12, 1996. She was a life long member of the Vassar United Methodist Church.
As a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother she was the pillar of the family dairy enterprise. Her greatest legacy is her family. She was a dedicated baseball and football enthusiast.
Surviving are five sons and two daughters and their spouses, Jim (Joan) Opperman, Portland, Michigan; Richard (Jane) Opperman, Granger, Indiana, Dr. Dennis (Karen) Opperman, Portland, Michigan, Lou Anne (Bob) Schultz, Frankenmuth; Ed (Sandy) Opperman, Vassar, Sharon (Brian) Kern, Vassar, Ronald Jr. (Karen) Opperman, Richville; 25 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Delmar Scribner, Frankenmuth, Don (Carol) Scribner, Vassar; several nieces and nephews; and also a special friend, Nina Janks, Caro.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Doris Doig, and infant sister Dorothy Scribner.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 7, 2001 at the Vassar United Methodist Church. Reverend Walter David officiated.
Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Home Care Hospice of Hope of Frankenmuth.
Arrangements were in care of Martin Funeral Home-Clark Chapel, Vassar.
GENEVIEVE E. REINERT
Mrs. Genevieve R. Reinert (Makela) of Millington dies on Monday, November 26, 2001 at her daughter's residence in Millington. She was 71 years of age.
Mrs. Reinert was born in October 1, 1930 in Cleoh Township, Michigan, the daughter or Arnold F. and Elizabeth (Lehtola) Makela.
On June 30, 1051 she married Walter C. Reinert. He preceded her in death in August of 1999.
Mrs. Reinert was employed at Zehnder's Restaurant of Frankenmuth retiring in 1986. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millington where she was once active in the Dorcas Society. She was also a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary of the Conrad-Wagner-Keene Post #164 of Millington.
Surviving are three children, Mark Reinert, Ann and husband Norm Beckrow and Mike Reinert, all of Millington; four grandchildren, one sister, Elaine Hoover of Grand Rapids, and two nieces.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Reinert was also preceded in death by a son, Wesley, a daughter-in-law, Ellie and a brother, Robert.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Millington. Interment was at the Millington Township Cemetery. Pastor Tim Bickel officiated.

HARRY J. BARNUM, SR.
Mr. Harry J. Barnum, Sr. of Millington, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001 at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw. He was 78 years of age.
Mr. Barnum was born September 7, 1923 in Birch Run, the son of Harry G. and Eva (Saxton) Barnum. On June 19, 1953 he married Hazel Lavigueur and together they celebrated 48 years of marriage. He had been employed at A-1 Fire Protection of Clio, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the American Legion of Millington, the Conrad-Wager-Keene, Post 164.
Surviving is his family, wife, Hazel of Millington; two sons, David and wife, Linda Barnum of Littleton, Colorado, Brian Barnum of Bad Axe; two daughters, Susan and husband, Steve Colwell of Clio, Vickie and husband, Brad Wescoat of Millington; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Beverly Davis of Toledo, Ohio; one brother, Bob and wife, Gloria Barnum of Millington; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by a son, Harry J. Barnum, Jr. in August of 1988; two sisters, Evelyn and Katherine; and a granddaughter, Rachel.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 30, 2001 at the Hanlin Funeral Home in Millington with Drew Hart officiating. Burial followed at the Newton Cemetery in Arbela Township.
