PATRICK ERRETT WELCH
Services for Patrick Welch, 77 of Canton will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 14 at the Plymouth Community Arts Council, 774 Sheldon, Plymouth.
Retired professor Dr. Patrick Welch passed on Saturday, June 29 at his home in Canton. Born in Missouri in 1925, Patrick grew up in Sand Springs, Okla. After his tour of duty as a B-24 radio operator, flying 20 combat missions in the European Theater in World War II, he graduated from the University of Tulsa, earning a B.A. in 1949 and an M.A. in 1950.
He went on to receive his doctorate at Ohio State University in 1958 with a dissertation about TV Quiz Shows. It was approved only two months before the scandals about game-fixing broke out. After 20 years at the University of Houston, including serving as chairman of the mass communications department, and a decade at the University of Illinois in telecommunication and speech, Dr. Welch came to Michigan in 1980 to teach at Wayne State University. He also taught at Eastern Michigan University for several years before his retirement.
During his 47 years in education, he participated in the establishment of the first educational FM radio station in the U.S. and the first educational television station in the world. He was listed in "Who's Who in America" from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s.
A life-long Christian Scientist, Pat was always actively involved in church work, including conducting church services and assisting others in reading more effectively, developing and presenting workshops to help others teach Sunday School better, and assisting state committee work in prisons and publications. At the time of his passing, he was a member of First Church of Christ-Scientist in Plymouth.
Pat's family remembers him best for his love of the theater and artistic talent, for letting them win when they were little, telling remarkable war stories on long car drives, eating cookies in one bite, praying with them in the middle of the night and waking them and whistling in the morning, pretending to be a monster while grandchildren ran screaming, and adding joy to their lives with his sassy good humor and charm. He was a strong, quiet man who never had an unkind word to say.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Patricia; children, Michael (Dihanne) Welch of San Diego, Calif., Catherine (Lee) Summers of Portland, Jennie (John) Eggers of Houston, Texas, and Margaret (Scott) Dendler of Troy; grandchildren, Jessica Bush, Patrick Welch II, Melissa and Amber Welch, Andrew Maneck, and Amanda and Callista Dendler; great-grandchild, Justin Bush.
