Jeanne Beck

Veteran community newspaper manager Jeanne Beck is being remember by friends and former colleagues as a no-nonsense supervisor with a heart of gold.

Beck, 78, died Monday at her home in Farmington Hills, a city she had called home since 1955. Her career as a manager in the community newspaper business spanned three decades.

Phil Power, Hometown Communications Network Chairman of the Board, first met Beck when she was running the financial side of the Farmington Enterprise. When the Enterprise merged with the Farmington Observer, she managed the paper's downtown Farmington office.

Beck later became credit manager for the entire company, working from corporate headquarters in Livonia.

"At all times, she was smart, motivated, effective," Power said. "She was admired and liked by all our staff; I depended entirely on her good judgment and great common sense."

Lucy Caulford, who works in the business office at Observer-Eccentric Newspapers, said Beck was "a great supervisor."

"She was a very caring and understanding person," Caulford said. "She was like a second mom to the ladies in the business office. We all loved her and she will be greatly missed."

Power added, "She personified Farmington, a wonderful and historic community filled with extraordinary people. I especially valued this role, because my own ancestor, Arthur Power, founded Farmington in 1824. I've always had a special spot in my heart for Farmington, and Jean always helped me keep in touch with the community.

"She had a long life, a distinguished career. And she brought enormous joy to her friends and co-workers. We will all miss her and we extend our condolences to her family."

Family members said Beck played piano, loved listening to bagpipe music and was an avid Detroit sports fan and loving grandmother.

Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 25 at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. 12 Mile Road in Farmington Hills, with a memorial service at 1 p.m.

Survivors include her son, David (Barbara); daughters Judy Smauder and Nancy Beck; a sister and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland, in 1990.

Memorials are preferred to Hospice of Michigan or the American Cancer Society.
